For hundreds of bay area families in need this christmas. One of the things that we want to do, we dont want to just get a handout. We want to give a hand up. A Humble Church in richmond serving up much more than Just Christmas dinner. Good evening. Im julie julie haener and im Lamonica Peters. Before we get to that story, we begin in San Francisco with an annual tradition at glide Memorial Church. Ktvu jose huerta shows us holiday tradition for six decades now, the glide Memorial Church in San Francisco, serving up 2500 hot meals on christmas food is delicious. Its from the soul, 67 year old Michael Thomas couldnt make ends meet at lost, his home in september, but he always has a seat at the table here. It is like family because everybody treats me respect here, james was a selfdcribed drug addict living in the streets today hes an employee of glide, helping others who are struggling like he once did. This place accepted me for who i was and didnt want nothing from me other than for me to be the best james that i could be, which was a trip coming from the street. You know what i mean . It takes 100 volunteers to serve and deliver meals on christmas, but glide serves every day to people from all walks of life, like devin party, who was unhoused for ten years before getting back on his feet. I told myself that i im not going to do the streets no more. Im going to get a job and all that stuff, and everything. I say, im going to do it as long as you stay focused and what you need to do. Yeah. Still he turns to glide for a free meal. No one is turned away. Its the same story for the nonprofit tenderloin. Tessie at the first Unitarian Universalist society. Everything. Where the christmas lineup includes live entertainment, the most wonderful time of the year. Folks can pick up a new outfit to keep warm this winter and even get a free haircut after they sit down for a meal. They serve about 500 plates. Eddie leftover food that we have goes to the shelters. The nonprofit will celebrate 50 years of giving next year. The nearby Saint Anthony foundation is serving up another 1500 meals thanks to the team of 60 that sacrificed time away from their own families so others could celebrate. We give. We receive. So the joy of today is giving, and in turn, we have a great feeling of gratitude and happiness. Nonprofits across the city spreading the holiday spirit in San Francisco. Joey jorda, ktvu, fox two news. Merry Christmas Everyone from tenderloin, dempsey, holiday dinners welcome one and all. Well, the Salvation Army also serving up meals to seniors in need today. Volunteer drivers in San Francisco lined up this morning to fill their cars with more than 4000 prepackaged meals. Staff spent hours preparing those meals to deliver to low income seniors who are unable to leave their homes due to age or illness. Each meal included a prepared turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and roasted vegetables. The Salvation Army delivers these meals to those in need each christmas. Many of them have been doing this for years and years and years. This is a tradition for so many people from families. You know, ive met grandparents that brought their kids to do this, and now theyre bringing their kids. And so, so many of the people have been doing this for years for some of the for thousand recipients seeing a Salvation Army driver will be the only face to face contact they have with someone on christmas. For most of us, christmas dinner means being surrounded by loving family in a warm home with a bounty of food. But in richmond tonight, for those without some of those basic needs, there is help in the community. On mcdonald avenue in richmond. The Bay Area Rescue Mission is a welcoming place. The chefs name is comfort and its quite suited to this woman who enjoys making meals for others. Today we make a special dinner. We make some ham, yam, stuffing, gravy. We have pie, salad and mashed potatoes. Yes. How many will you feed today . Today were going to feed about 750 people. Families with kids of all ages, along with seniors and babies here to enjoy christmas dinner. How did you have for dinner . It was i think it was ham on corn, mashed potatoes with gravy and like, i think it was some orange stuff. I dont know what it was. Yeah, but yeah, pastor dave says all are welcome here and he means it. And as you see in the sign, if you dont have a friend, youll find one here. Its a humble place for the community, but the folks that work here say they know its more than just a meal. Theyre serving. Last year, we served 1. 6 million meals. Uh, every day of the week. Well, six days of the week, we have meals that we serve at the warehouse. Daily meals are just one of three programs offered here, including an overnight shelter and a one year program to help stabilize folks, to help them get back on track. We have a holistic, uh, program. We have Mental Health classes. We have christian classes. We have, uh, financial classes every day. Um, and we really love this community. Those whove been served by the mission often find a way to help others. Richard has just finished his one year program. What is this place done for you . Oh, its changed my life. Just uh, spiritual. Um, just getting myself right back on track from the way i used to live. Yeah, its been a blessing. He celebrating christmas with his nephews and his sister. An Inspiring Change in himself and others. Seeing what . Where i came from and what its done for me was what brought my sister over here. Pastor dave says no one needs an invitation to enjoy the meals, worship or job training offered here. Just show up. He finds joy like those who support the mission by giving. Its always about giving. You know . Um, uh, by giving, you receive. And this delicious christmas dinner is just one of the Many Services offered by the Bay Area Rescue Mission in richmond, all made possible by donations of those individuals in the community and organizations over 350 people were served. This morning and 66 new county. It happened along train tracks near mount shasta. The Mount Shasta Police department confirmed one person died on the scene, and there are two points of interest in this case mount shasta pd has not provided any further details on the investigation. Santa clara county firefighters battled early this morning and a fire at los altos. It started just before 5 a. M. At a building on el camino real, near North San Antonio road and sherwood avenue. Mountain view and palo alto firefighters also responded. At this point, we dont. We have our duty investigator on scene whos conducting the initial investigation on at at this point, there are no ones allowed to go in the building until we have the fire fully contained. Community members were advised to avoid the area. Fire Officials Say no one was inside the building when it broke out. So far, it is unclear how that fire started. It wasnt the only Early Morning fire in san leandro. Three people were displaced after a fire sparked at a residential building. This happened at 15 550 east 14th street, the Alameda County Fire Department posted on social media. The fire hit the Center Hallway of the building shortly before 6 a. M. The American Red Cross provided aid to displaced residents. Contra costa county crews responded to a residential fire in martinez this morning. Video shows firefighters putting out the blaze just before 1 00 this afternoon. This happened at a multistory building on alhambra avenue, authorities said. It started in a carport located underneath the building and extended to residential units above. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation. A Sacramento Man pulled his wife to safety this morning after getting a dangerous early wake up call. Reporter orko manna has the story. In this quiet South Sacramento neighborhood, the charred damage on this home and the burnt wood in the lawn serve as reminders of a devastating fire. I heard glass breaking, and then i saw. I heard yelling, desiree fountain lives next door to the house on atherton way, where investigators say a woman was badly burned in a fire that started just before 4 00 on the morning of Christmas Eve. Fountain. Witnessing that womans husband save her from the flames. He was literally pulling his wife out of the out of the from the front door, pulling her from the front door, and he was able to get her outside. I ran in the house and got a blanket and put it over her firstrillionesponders took the woman whos in her late 30s to a burn hospital where shes recovering from critical injuries. Fountain says her neighbors have Young Children but is happy to learn they were not home at the time of the fire. Who knows if he would have been able to get all of them out . Fire Officials Say the man then went back into the burning building to save his dog, and came out through the garage. Both of them were not hurt. We never recommend going back into a fire. Let us get on scene. Let us do our job. Sacramento Fire Department spokesperson Justin Sylvia tells me the fire started in a back bedroom of the house, but its unclear what caused it. It hit a point where it flashed over in that room, which basically incinerate everything in that room. So evidence collecting was very difficult for our investigators as detectives figure out what happened. Neighbors are hoping the woman recovers soon, praying for both of them and their family. A remarkable rescue when a big rig driver is left hanging off a florida overpass, Palm Beach County fire rescue is racing in after the 18 wheeler was left hanging in palm beach gardens. Crews used a fire truck ladder to pull the driver from the dangling truck. On saturday, he was taken to a local Medical Center to be evaluated and. So all those pollutants are trapped very close to the surface. Meanwhile today, temperatures very close to where they should be for this time of the year from 58 degrees at the seashore to 61 degrees at peace in oakland and around the peninsula and san mateo, and also right around burlingame and belmont. It was 63 degrees apiece today, and san jose, morgan hill, and also in gilroy. So this is our live weather camera. Visibility is unlimited from twin peaks looking out towards Market Street this evening. We do have some spotty showers. However, right there, right now around the north bay from novato in through nicasio and backing into petaluma. You might hear some raindrops on the rooftops around santa rosa as well.
