commented, what a nice guy lon simmons was on and off the field. >> 12 back, 12 back. good you can tell it goodbye. >> reporter: lon simmons had a trademark cal and a voice for radio. today the sports world is telling simmons goodbye with tweets and fond memories of 98- year-old football hall of fame announcers. >> i think i have the best voice i've heard. the first time he met me, he threw me out. >> reporter: years later he would announce games with the guy who kick him out of the booth. >> i don't know anybody who didn't like lon simmons. >> reporter: he broadcast the first game in 1958. >> lon simmons was my idol. >> reporter: we talked to john miller by phone in arizona about sitting alongside his idol. >> and lon would have this voice, i was so intimidated by lon. we would walk toward each other and long would say, hi how are you and i would say i'm good. >> candle stick and i are pretty much alike. both are big and ugly. we've been around because there's been no place else. they couldn't replace it. and we're both pretty windy. >> there's a lot of baseball guys who would not be able to do football. >> but simmons did both. his call of steve young in 1988 has been called one of the best sport calls in history. >> because there was such emotion in the way lon calls it. >> he runs, gets away again. goes to the 40, gets away again. to the 35. touch back at the 30. to the 20, the 15, the 10, touchdown 49ers. >> gets away, gets away. still on his feet. all those kinds of lines. like he's in awe of any fan that would be watching that. >> reporter: lon put what fans were feeling into words with skill and humor. starky says that's what he will miss more. >> he would at any time come up with a line that would crack you up. that was on or off the field, that was unlike any other person. >> and we got this message from stark. for many people lon simmons was their first. he made a first impression of those who listened to him and that impression will not be forgotten. that sense of humor, joe starky says he remembered a game when the giants were down and down by a lot. then off the cuff, lon simmons said where do we go to surrendered. and a time that people wanted expecting much from the system today. but the next one, get ready for that. heavier rain pushing back into the bay area. as far as the totals, you can see a sampling here. oakland near a quarter of an inch of rain. san francisco .04. those amounts really begin to taper off. mountain view only .02 of an inch. here you can't see right now on storm tracker 2. all the snow headed toward the sierra producing storms there. approaching parts of mendecino county. the bay area radar quiet. that will be changing for tomorrow. especially for late monday into tuesday morning. the next band of organized rainfall approaches the bay area. heavy rainfall, winds increasing around 35 miles per hour an the possibility in fact, a pretty good bet of thunderstorms. we'll run this forecast completely, look what happens by tuesday morning. by midnight that rainfall, that intense band of rainfall pushing through the region. we'll talk more about this. how much rainfall you can expect and also we could have a dusting in the bay area hills. a lot more coming up in a little bit. >> thank you, mark. the spring storms are a welcomed sight for the state's billion dollars ski industry. coming up a little bit later, we'll go to the sierra where struggling ski resorts finally finally have a reason to smile. a strange trio of crimes in a normally quiet north bay neighborhood. a woman is in custody accused of arson, assault, and vandalism in millvalely. they rattled the nerves of those who lived there. debora villalon is live at panoramic highway after talking to a victim who said she was doused with lighter fluid. >> reporter: sprayed in her hair and face by a woman who had already lit a fire. and fortunately a fire fighter happened by and intervened. >> i said what are you doing, what are you doing and she wouldn't speak. >> reporter: it was a terrifying encounter for this homeowner. finding a woman spray painting the word rapist at the bottom of her driveway. and realizing it's the same car, same woman who came on her property and started a fire last week. >> that's when she started spraying me with lighter on my hair, in my face. we got into a struggle because i was trying to restrain her. >> reporter: what she didn't know is her attacker had set a house on fire across the highway. dousing the electrical box with lighter fluid and torching it. that homeowner heard popping, smelled smoke and turned a garden hose on it until firefighters arrived. >> she was spraying me all over. spraying me. >> reporter: the homeowner finally got help from drivers passing by. >> one of our off duty firefighters who was heading down the hill at the time this assault was going on. saw the assault, stopped and rendered ate to the person that was being assaulted and detained the assailant. >> a rapist in this driveway, murderer in another driveway. >> reporter: and neighbors were stunned to find murderer, rapist spray painted on pavement. she's targeted this house before. bring boxes and trying to move in. also convinced that someone who raped her sits in the vicinity. neighbors who saw her didn't recognize her from the neighborhood. >> she was squirming a little bit. yelling get off me occasionally. but at that point she had a 200- pound guy sitting on her back. >> reporter: the woman says the woman had a pile of spray paint and lighter fluid with her and clearly wasn't done with her rampage. >> it's madness. it's crazy. we have no explanation. we don't know this woman. nobody knows this woman. >> i just hope they can help her so that she doesn't think that there's something bad that happened here and that she comes back eventually. >> reporter: sheriff investigators say they have no record of a sexual assault allegation. and the woman has not been able to explain her actions. she's identified as naya sailor. she's 24, she's from richmond and apparently has unspecified restraining orders against her in the east bay. now she's facing new charges. ken. >> very strange case. thank you so much deb. turning now to the boston marathon bombing trial. attorneys for dzhokhar tsarnaev have acknowledged that he did it. he's charged with 30 counts and 17 carry the death penalty. one guilty verdict in the 17 will lead to a second trial where a jury will decide if he faces execution or life in prison. dzhokhar tsarnaev's attorney hope to spare his life arguing that his brother was the master mind and that he was his puppet. in -- rolling stone magazine retracted their story about a rape that happened at a university. a young musician killed early today was an accident victim of gunfire. police say the 26-year-old man was fatally shot outside the golden bowl bar on 15th street right near oakland city hall as he was carrying out his equipment shortly at 1:00 a.m. there was an argument down the block and another man fired at someone else. missing him but hitting the musician. another man walking by was hit in the arm. the gunman and his intended victim ran off. musicians name has not yet been released. anyone with information should give them a call. in oakley, in easter contra costa county, a large fight had been reported there just before midnight. oakley police have not named that victim or any of the suspects they are asking for tips even anonymously. san francisco police say they do not suspect foul play in the death of a person who's body was found in a house that was filled with trash. the remains were said to be badly decomposed. they were removed yesterday from the home in the richmond district. police say it's possible that it is the elderly mother of a woman who was taken away because she couldn't care for herself. the city called in a professional cleaning service to remove all of the junction inside and also deal with an infestation of rats and spiders. a well known community activist saw a wish for a dream come true as governor brown granted him a pardon. as a 16-year-old he was tried as an adult and convicted of a home invasion robbery in the city. he served 19 years in prison before he was paroled in 2005. since then, he's been fighting deportation to his native china. he called the pardon today a happy new beginning but said, it does not minimize the trauma he inflicted on his victims. zane was one of 23 people pardoned by the governor today. questioning the governor's water restrictions. plus the rain that fell changed some easter plans for some folks. where some families decided to go after being forced to go inside. >> and with tens of thousands listening, the pope makes the plea on this easter sunday. his message when the 10:00 news continues in just 90 seconds. governor jerry brown defended his call for mandatory water restriction. the governor said farmers have already fallowed hundreds of thousands of acres of land and pulled up vines and trees. he says restricting water to farmers would displace hundreds of thousands of workers and would mean more food would have to be imported to california from other countries. brown says enforcement is a criminal component for people who are not saving water. >> the districts can go to court and get a seize order. in a drought of this magnitude you have to change that behavior and you have to change it substantially. >> on wednesday, governor brown announced the first mandatory water restrictions in california history. he ordered cities and towns across the state to cut their water use by 25%. the move comes as california enters a fourth year of drought. a weather system brought some much needed and very welcomed rain to the bay area. the better news is that more is in the forecast. ktvu's cara liu checks the conditions. >> reporter: oak -- oakland got nearly a quarter inch of rain. in jack london some had umbrellas others braved the elements. the soggy weather did not seem to deter the easter bunny from sharing treats. we found daniel good bundled up giving goodies. >> with all the drought stuff, i know that we need it and hopefully we get some more of it. we did not get enough this winter i know that. >> reporter: several families shifted their plans choosing to head to the local theater and make it a movie day. >> well, i think we're staying inside because really there's nothing to do outside. >> usually we go off to the parks but it's a rainy day. that's what theaters are for. >> reporter: the wet weather especially after a try spell meant slick roads. this truck collided with a tow truck on southbound 880 near fruitvale in oakland earlier this afternoon. chp officers say weather was at least partly to blame. officers say they did see a lower number of collisions. they also said it's a good time to double check your went wiper since there's more rain in the forecast. cara liu. pope francis delivered a message of peace this easter sunday. in his words of hope come against a backdrop of increasing violence against christians all around the world. conner powell reports now from vatican city. >> reporter: pope francis marked easter today from a rainy st. peter's square. while thousands braved the bad weather, pope francis tackled global policies and violence in his speech to the faithful. it was a somber speech that the nuclear agreement will be successful. he also highlighted human pain around the world. he called for peace in iraq and syria while pushing the international community to do more for the victims of violence. >> we ask for peace above all for the beloved syria and iraq that the war of ours may seize and that peaceful relations may be reached. >> reporter: and he's also praying for the recent attacks of victims in kenya. those militants threatening more violence and vowing to turn the streets of kenya red with blood. conner powell, fox news. the first family had heavy security as they traveled to alexandria virginia. the pastor told the congregation to stay in their seats and not take selfies while the president was there since today was a day for worship. an iraqi veteran says he suffered from ptsd and he attempted suicide twice. he says because he survived he feels it's his destiny to do this walk. gabrielle mays reports. >> reporter: michael roberts is going on a very long walk. one that will take him from wisconsin to illinois to virginia and many months between. >> reporter: he hopes his boots to boots campaign will show him some of the challenges his friends face. >> they come back and they get shipped some where to get stabilized and they come home and sent here to a facility here in this country. about a year later, a year or two later they just get in a car and go home and that's it. >> reporter: roberts won't be alone in his journey. his dog boots will be with him every step of the way. robert's journey is gaining attention from many different veterans like richie. when richie heard about roberts cross country walk she knew she had to be a part of it. >> it's a gift to be able to do these kinds of things. and if i can take advantage of them, i am going to. >> reporter: robert is plans to make stops along the way. >> i'm going to have a go procamera. when i get to a certain location, i am going to ask if i can video them and would they like to express their gratitude to these veterans. >> reporter: he's also asking for money to fund veterans. i am going to give again tracking a cold system that's developing up to our north and west. coming up we'll break down shower chances for tomorrow and the timed window of the heaviest rain. a san jose earthquake following the game today the soccer team hosted an easter egg hunt to raise money for the family of officer michael johnson. johnson was killed on duty while responding to an emergency call. today's funds raiser raised $10,500. new out fits and candy to fill all those easter eggs, americans will spend more than $16 billion. now about 80% of the people celebrate easter and since it signals the start of spring, consumers in much of the country tend to open their wallets for new clothes as they head outdoors. >> spring is one of the biggest and busiest times of year for retailers in general. easter certainly helps push the sales up. but where easter falls whether it's in march or april could directly impact retailers spring sales at the end of the day. now a survey found that the average person spent a little more than $140. a crowd trying to set a new record. organizers brought 510,000 plastic eggs and scattered them all over the lawn in sacramento. some of those plastic eggs held reporter: and thrilling on the slopes too where there's a blanket of fresh new powder. >> it's great. it's been great. i never skied during snowing before. so this is very, very exciting. >> reporter: exciting too for the ski resorts that are making lots of green today from the white. >> business is great. >> reporter: the snow providing some cold cash for ski operators and although it's too little too late. at least a little help from the drought. >> it's great snow out there. i took five or six runs this morning. pretty nice and fluffy. i have five inches on the ground so far and it's not stopping. >> reporter: the snow is also jump starting business at this store. the roads are well maintained thanks to the presence of caltrans. >> it's good for california, it's good for us, it's good for business. >> reporter: a nice gift from mother nature giving businesses in the high sierra a big lift. >> it would have been hopeful to have more of that in the early season. skiers and snow boarders will likely have another week to hit the slopes. at last check, chain controls are on effect at both interstate 80 and 50. b.a.r.t. riders in oakland are being put on buses because of some needed repair work on the tracks. b.a.r.t. workers are replacing 1,000 rail ties and 3,000 feet of rail. both have become degraded and worn down over time. new switches are also being installed to allow trains to move from one track to another. trains have had to slow down in the area because of safety concerns. there's no additional charge but it will take longer. there could be 30 to 60 minute delays. b.a.r.t. says some customers are frustrated. >> the rainy wet sunday, nobody wants to have their easter sunday interrupted with bus service but you know i think people understand that these are critical repairs and that in the end it's going to provide a safer smoother ride for them. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. says the work will last about 11 weekends and it should be done by august. the agency is working with the warriors and the a's so service won't be disrupted during the games. the tracks are expected to be open by 4:00 tomorrow morning. >> first the children, and then the grown ups. that's how it went this year at the 15th annual bring your own big wheel race. look at all the grown ups. there were a few crashes but nothing that looked too serious. now we talked to several folks and asked what pushes them to come out with their silly costumes. and the response, to have fun. >> you have to pitch back a little bit and and pitch back to the right but it's all began with a mass. judy ruiz and her husband traveled from san diego to celebrate the holy day. >> i feel like i'm in a magical place. this is a beautiful scene. i feel privileged to be here on easter sun, thanking god for our blessings. >> reporter: this marks the 26th year that people gather under the illuminated sky. >> christ is so great he will raise up his nation. i am so thankful and we praise him today. >> reporter: in the spirit of life, glide memorial church continued their charitable history. serving free easter meals to those in need. their famous fried chicken dinner was on the menu. but it wouldn't be a true easter celebration in san francisco without some whacky and fun events. >> my favorite part of easter is that they put candy in your basket. what? don't judge me? >> reporter: the event caters to kids but adults have fun too. he started the parade 24 years ago. >> it's grown quite a bit over the years. the first year i just had about 20 ladies walking down the street in beautiful hats. >> reporter: now there's too many hats to count. handmade by beckman he proudly displays them outside his boutique. the enchanted crystal every easter. >> my mom and sister wore beautiful hats on easter and i always remembered that. >> reporter: the event now features food, vendors, pony rides and more. proof the city has any celebration you're looking for. whether it's about fun -- >> happy easter. >> reporter: or your faith. cristina rendon. some little ones got to go on an easter egg hunt. the children picked up eggs and the rain didn't spoil the festivities there. there's the bunny. he had a voice that a's giants and 49ers fans will certainly remember forever. and coming up in sports wrap, we will hear some of lon simmons greater calls as we continue to a few days. rainfall will develop in the evening hours. heavy rainfall and tuesday that cold system drops in. so with that the chance of some thunderstorms. now first thing tomorrow morning, partly to mostly cloudy skies. temperatures in the cool side in the upper 30s to the mid-40s for your monday morning. also, the a's home opener tomorrow evening at 7:15. there's still a chance of showers there could be a few scattered showers. i'm thinking the main rain ban moves in closer to the game time. we'll have to keep an eye on that radar leading up to the first pitch. the chance of a shower on your monday night forecast. the cold system to our north and west and it'll be approaching into our area. with that heavy rain, the possibility of some thunderstorms and the cold nature of our system. and there's the expected rainfall range with about a half an inch to an inch and a half. these numbers will change around quite a bit. these are directly from the forecast model. you can see there's a lot more than today's amounts. you can see santa rosa could be a 9.2. san jose .17 and same for san francisco. so get ready for another round of rainfall. that cold air we could have a bit of a dusty snowfall. that means mount san helena, mount diablo. you can count on more snow and northern lake count tips as well. they have the same winter snowfall. snow totals will be six to 10- inches. chain controls will likely be extended for parts of 80 and 50. here's our forecast model. the chance of a few pop up showers on monday. rainfall rates on the increase up in the north bay. gradually spraying to the south. a ban of rain pour into the region. pop up showers on tuesday. that's when we could have thunderstorms in the region. forecast highs for tomorrow, mainly in the 50s to the 60s. the cool down will continue. the look ahead your five day forecast, morning rains, showers for tuesday. a sun clouds mix for wednesday. there's a slight chance of a shower on friday and a sun/cloud mix by the about bay area sports for more than half a century. one of the most iconic and well liked broadcasters in bay area sports history has tide. lon simmons first came to the bay area's attention when the giants moved west from new york in 1958. team with hodges, and lon southerly educated those listening. simmons was also the play by play broadcaster for the 49ers describing some of their most memorable moments at kesark and candle stick park. simmons remembered bill king with the oakland a's. simmons died today at the age of 91. it's a tribute that multiple bay area teams have made statements at his passing. the a's, his humility and humor made him one of the most beloved figures in broadcast history. lon east personality and whit set him apart as one -- lon's personality and wit set him apart as one of the best broadcasters. at the end of the sports wrap we'll have a selection of some of the lon's most memorable calls. you can pretty much see tonight's warriors game coming in san antonio. the warriors in the second half of back to back games in the fourth. the defending nba champs. the spurs came out firing on all cylinders. danny green always a threat from the
