Ive seen over two inches of rain. Up there in the mount watershed nearly 3inches of rain has fallen. Heres whats going on. Thats system number one and this is system number two and kind of number three. This whole plume of moisture moving boo into the bay area this weekend. This rainfall is going to triple, even quadruple the water we have. And the rain created a big problem for the afternoon commute. People driving home were caught in back ups. Reporter now the Highway Patrol tells us the friday evening commute is always busy but todays rainfall just adds more headaches for drivers. A common mistake driving in the rain. Windshield wipers are on but the head lights are off. Its the law and it got this driver pulled over and cited. I honestly thought the lights were on. I usually leave them on auto so they turn on by themselves. Reporter the evening commute was a crawl throughout the area. It was pretty bad. Absolutely terrible. It took me about an hour to go from Frederik Andersen from San Francisco to the east bay. I will call caltrans and they should be here momentarily. Reporter a condition officers say many drivers dont know how to handle. It is a little scary because theres been a lot of accidents going on. But i just try to be careful. Reporter chp tell us what not to do. A common mistake during the rainy season is apply the brakes really hard. You slide out from behind you out to the side and causes you to spin. Here in california i feel we dont know how to drive in the rain. Reporter well, we were up here in blue canyon at this same time last night. I used this to measure the snow. The snow depth here at blue canyon last night was at 2 inches. Through this here you can see the snow is almost a foot deep according to this. Some of this is drift. So maybe six to 8inches is closer to the mark. The other difference from yesterday is the traffic. When our truck left oakland and the time it took for our truck to get here to blue canyon, six hours had passed. We could have gone to l. A. So if you are heading up here to the snow tonight, be prepared for a long drive. At times it was moving slowly, other times i 80 eastbound was a parking lot. We chatted with Francis Valdez stopped cold on her very long trip to reno. Weve been driving all together for about three hours now coming from sacramento. Reporter thats three hours for a trip that should have taken about 45 minutes. Traffic often backs up before chain controls but this was unusual. A back up of slow moving traffic about 3 miles long. One chain installer joked that theres been so few chain controls he forgot to put them on. This storm clearly caught some people off guard. Francis said she didnt see it coming. We made reservations three weeks ago before the rain and everything. I think everybody prayed for the rain and here it is. Were like, we didnt expect all this. Reporter with a big storm like this the real news is about how it will impact the drought and how much were adding to the snow pack. Now when state officials did their snow pack survey at the first of the month, statewide the snow pack was averaging about 12 for that day. Now after yesterdays snow and today i checked the automatic sensors and the snow pack for the state stands right now at 16 of normal for this day. So its going up but obviously we have a long way to go. At blue canyon, Ken Pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. And Contra Costa County a propane tanker went off of 282 in concord, overturn and hit a tree. It happened at 6 30 this evening. The driver was not hurt. Since the tanker was empty there was no Hazardous Material spilled. One firefighter was injured as he was trying to up right the truck. It appears he broke his ribs. He was taken to the hospital. Ironically the drought could contribute to flooding and emergency manager in Sonoma County says that the drought led to a build up of debris that could potentially block the water and cause flooding when it really starts raining tomorrow. In napa, fears of fast Running Water has shut down the boat ramp. Two parks located along the napa river are also closed. The preserve and crossing park. The closures are being done for safety reasons because of high water predicted over the next few days. A city system known to overflow every now and then after storms got a tune up today. Crews were down below raking down rags, wipes and other debrises caught flying through the system. New at 10 00, police in san jose are searching for a man that posed as a Police Officer and assaulted a woman. The man told the victim he was an officer and threatened to arrest her if she didnt do what he said. He then took her to a park parking lot and sexually assaulted her. Police say this is a surveillance photo of the mans car. Its a white mid1990s dodge durango. Anyone with information should call san jose police. In Oakland Police are investigating the death of a woman in her 70s. They say she may have been a victim of a home invasion. Officers were called to a home on 34th avenue near foothill boulevard in the fruitvale around 2 15 this afternoon. Paul chambers is live at opd headquarters and tell us Police Found Evidence that someone had forced their way into the home. Paul. Reporter frank, police say they got a call asking someone to go by the womans house and check on her welfare. For several hours tonight, Oakland Police investigated the citys 11th homicide of the year. Investigators say around 2 15 this afternoon, officers were dispatched to the Department Building in the 1800 block of 34th avenue in the fruitvale. When officers arrived on the scene, they did a search of the exterior of the residence and they found what appeared to be a forced entry. Reporter once officers went inside they found two people who were related. A man in his 40s and a female in her 70s who was un un unresponsive. Its unknown the cause of death for the female. Reporter the male victim also had no visible signs of injury. And is cooperating. They put a gun to my face, yeah. Reporter this man who asked us not to show his identify say he and his family were also victims of a forced entry. They took valuables, they took money. You know, and thank god they didnt hurt us. Reporter although she admits he was squared he understands its a social economic issue. He says theres not much police can do to prevent these type of crimes. You can patrol oakland with tanks and give every cop an m16. If people are unemployed and hungry the crime is not going down. Reporter police has not released any information about the suspect or suspects in this case. Theyre asking anyone who lives in that area to give them a call if they know anything in this case. Paul chambers, ktvu news. The jobs report is showing a drop. 113,000 new jobs were added last month. Economists had expected about 180,000. The month before december there were even fewer new hires, 75,000. Still the National Jobless Rate fell to 6. 6 as people found work. People on the campus of uc berkeley are in mourning tonight after a student athlete collapsed and died today exactly what caused junior ted obu to collapse is still unknown. He had been training with teammates. Abus impact went beyond the field. Reporter here on campus students are saying abu was a leader. Abus death has dealt a painful blow to the cal community. People who knew him really liked him. Everybody is pretty somber about it. Reporter classmates, professors and coaches say that the junior was a light on the field and off. His teammates were in shock this morning after he collapsed after a supervised training run. The cal family is heartbroken. They and we are devastated. Weve lost an incredible young man. Im deeply saddened to be in front of you all today. Reporter at an emotional news conference, sandy barber joined the coach and medical staff. During the work out, we noticed that he was having trouble. Agu was rushed to alta base Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The lineman had impressed head coach that he awarded him a scholarship last year. He was exactly, exactly what you want from a young man. Reporter people say ted agu had a smile that lit up a room. One professor who just met with him last night says the Public Health major finally called premed ted had a vision of helping others some day as a doctor. Hes very dear to me and the faculty. So i was very shocked when i heard the news. He was really a bright light. And he really stood out in front of the crowd because of that bright light and that energy. And the smile. Ted agu was also a member of the omega si fi fraternity. Theres been an outpouring on media sites just about how much agu was loved. A young man that in his 21 years touched many peoples lives. Results from the coroner about the cause of death could take six to eight weeks. The university is working with the family to discuss plans for a memorial service. In a letter to the new york times, woody allen is denying allegations that he molested his 7yearold daughter 21 years ago. Allen wrote an opinion piece on the paper and said this will be his final word on the subject. He said the molestation claims were orchestrated by dillan farrows mother during a break up. Allen said that mia farrow coached dillan on what to say and said that investigators came to the same conclusion. He added, i haddened molested dylan and any rational person would see the prior. Ktvus robert handa talked to a Boulder Creek family who faced the tough decision to take down some of their own trees. Reporter the guerrero family in Boulder Creek moved to the bay area because of this beautiful home surrounded with trees. But the trees have made their home vulnerable. Looking a little sad. Oaks are getting pretty bad. Reporter the guerreros called in travis tree professionals when the first storm swept in this week and large branches started falling. Suddenly the swaying trees started to look and sound ominous. You can hear the branches and stuff starting to get heavy and creeking and stuff like that. So yeah, you know definitely rather than pitter patter on the roof. How big were the branches. We had a 40footer fall not too long ago. Luckily it did not hit the home. The fir trees are really bad. Those are the ones that usually fall on houses. Theres a little bit of wind. 8inches of rain were supposed to get. Everybody beware of trees around your house. Justice toliver was layed to rest today and it was a huge turn out for her memorial. John sasaki tells us there were so many People Police had to be called in to help with crowd control. Reporter it was a dreary wet day in oakland as nearly 1,000 people said goodbye to 17 yearold justice toliver. Ive been knowing her since she was 11 years old. Its hard. Reporter the funeral came two weeks after justice was shot and killed at her own home by allegedly her 14yearold brother. Accidents do happen. Reporter we were not allowed inside the service. Oakland police were called in to clear out thousands of people because the church was too crowded. People are disappointed. Because family we drove a long way and we cant get in. Reporter justice aunt came from out of town. Justice was a beautiful young lady. I helped raise justice from a little girl. Me and her mother and were a very close family. Reporter the 17yearold mother was remembered at sweet and fun loving. Everybody knew her. Everybody liked her. If they didnt like her they loved her. She was a good person. Like she was sweet. Weve also learned four additional deaths in santa clara county. By our count 39 people have died from the flu in the nine bay area counties. Santa clara county has the most confirmed deaths with 14. Ktvus rob roth asks Health Officials why the flu has claimed so many lives this season. This is ideal for most people. Reporter at this Medical Clinic at San Francisco, doctors say they definitely see more influenza cases this year than last. The California Department of Public Health says 202 people have died the so far this year from the flu. The vast majority from the h1n1 virus. That doesnt include 41 cases still under investigation but still almost double the flu cases reported last year. Thats a lot compared to especially compared to last year. Reporter Tomas Arragon believes fewer people died last year because the prodominant flu was h2n2 virus which more people have built up immunity to. You have a big pool of people who are still susceptible. The death toll includes 39 people from the bay area and four children under 4 years old. Scientists will look into whether the current train of h1n1 has become more virulent. The numbers have been tapering off. It looks like its plateaued off for us a little bit. January was the really big upswing for us. Vaccination is the best medicine but some resist. Never had a problem and, i dont think i will get one. Reporter were not out of the woods yesterday. The infant was an infant from river side county. 83 of the patients in 2013 were children and officials tell us the illness is a cyclical disease. The whole time the winter storm warning. 4 00 tomorrow afternoon a line goes through. Look at the north bay line right. Youre going to see urban and small stream advisories. Now we move into sunday morning. Here comes sundays system. Still going off in the mountains. Chains the whole bit up there. Winter storm warning. Now we go into sunday and lunchtime. You see it moving sunday night everyone into monday morning. Thats why theyre going to see six to 8inches of rain in the russian basin. That heavy rain is going to come down there.
