Reporter it was the worse possible outcome for any sports fan and it had a dark cloud hanging over the dodger game. Police said they would keep a close watch on everyones safety. Were always bumped up for the dodger series but were doing a little bit more on the outside of the ballpark for the neighborhood to make sure that when people are leaving they feel safe. Reporter they added plain clothed officers and some on motorcycles. As they left, it was no doubt that the death was in the minds of players minds. Its really saturday. We take this as serious as anybody. And but its, when it comes down to it it is just a game. Reporter state assembly perez who is a dodger fan from los angeles was also on the field. I think its appalling to everyone in the state that weve seen a couple of indenses on these kind of violence, our minds are with the victims family. Reporter but the healthy rivalry continues. They identified the suspect as 21yearold Michael Montgomery of lodi. He says he talked to his son by phone and that phopbt father montgomery said he stabbed denver after denver hit him over the head with a chair. Investigators are also looking for twod additional men who fled the fight on foot. All of this is reminiscent of bryan stow. Hes the bay area paramedic that will never be the same after he was tragically beaten. The stow family sent ktvu a text today it says quote we are horrified and deeply saddened by this senseless about of violence. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family. The giants released a statement it says many part, we want to be clear that there is absolutely no place in our community for this type of senseless violence. And a statement from the dodgers says theres no rational explanation for this senseless act which resulted in jonathans death. The pain that this has caused his family and friends is unimaginable. Words are not enough to describe our sadness. We spoke to the social psychologists about how sports fans can turn fanatical and violence. She told us alcohol is often a contributing factor but it goes beyond that. We become passionate about our teams when were winning. This is why we will wear hats and shirts that are associated with our teams when theyre doing well. This is called basking in our glory. Reporter the fans can become so involved in the game that our mood can reflect on whether the team is winning or losing. Jonathans friend did warn him to be careful and said john just shrugged it off as most people did because after all, he was just going to ball game. He was just a warm kind person. Firefighters in Contra Costa County attacked a brush fire this afternoon in lafayette. We could see smoke from our traffic camera. The grass fire started at around 2 30 today. Calfire sent a full response including Fire Fighting aircraft but that was cancelled after firefighters managed to contain the fire. And people who live in this neighborhood say several trees have fallen recently and last night several thousand customers in the east bay lost power. We have new information tonight about the killing of a student from San Francisco state. Police now say he was shot in the back and that the attack was unprovoked. Also today, Police Showed off two assault weapons, combat knives and Survival Gear that they discovered from the home of the suspect. Investigators are saying he shot valdez as the 20yearold student was getting off a b. A. R. T. Train. Police say they are relieved they have arrested the suspect when they did because they say the suspect may have been planning a much larger attack. Were just glad nothing played out other than it did. But that doesnt do us any good with poor mr. Valdez. Police say several other people claimed the suspect pulled guns on them. As for the weapon, police are trying to determine if he acquired them legally. His friend say he was a special person. Amber reporter frank, Justin Valdez has lots of friends here at the university of San Francisco. His friends say his life may have been short but his vision for the future lives on. He was all about love and happiness. Reporter valdez is described as an Eternal Optimist voted by his High School Class as most likely to change the world. Valdez was on his way home after his life his job as a life guard at the local swimming pool. I want to know out of everybody in the world why justice. Reporter his sister came here to mourn.
