Police responded to reports of shots fired about 3 30 this afternoon on kirkwood avenue near earl street in the Hunters Point neighborhood. At this point no arrests haven been made. A nuwark man was killed today when he was run over by a large earth moving at a construction site. Police say a man driving a scraper was making a u turn and didnt see the victim. He later looks back and saw the worker on the ground. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Californias Unemployment Rate rose last month for the second month in a row. In august it was 8. 9 that is slightly lower than the 8. 7 in july. This also comes despite california adding 29,000 jobs in august. The discrepancy may be because people who have been out of work for so long that they werent counted anymore started looking for jobs again and showed up in these new numbers. Bay area counties faired better than the rest of the state for the month of august. Marin county had the lowest rate again. It was 5 . Solano was the highest at 8. 2 .
