Up next on a second look the dis distinctively american type music called jazz and those who have made it great. Benny goodman, ben crosby and stan get. All straight ahead tonight on a second look. Good evening and welcome to a second look. Im julie haener. Jazz will soon have its own home in San Francisco. The organization sf jazz plans to open its own center on january 21st. This is a video the group produced showing a buildings construction compressed down to a minute. Located at franklin and felt street in San Francisco. The sf center will have an auditorium for concerts as well as space for rehearsals. Over decades, the bay area has been a favorite for jazz musicians and we here at ktvu have had the pleasure of talking to them when they came to town. Jazz great lina horn brought her one woman show to town and elane corral was there. Reporter she is the kind of woman who can reduce a room full of reporters to mush. Like she did at a press conference in San Francisco. Instead of tough questions she was bombarded by meek requests for autographs. Lina horn is a power house and a one woman show at the golden gate theater has audiences gushing. Reporter at 65 years old, lina knocks them dead on stage. She has a figure that defies her age, a voice that has gotten better through years and a performance that mesmerizes the audience. Viewers scratch their head and say, how does she look so good for a 65yearold. I dont do a big deal about it. A lot of my friends they go in the ladies room after the first act and they hear such funny things they come back and tell me what they say. She must have gotten her face done. She must have got her whole body lifted. I said lord have mercy. If i had to cut up as much as ive heard. There wouldnt be anything of me left. Reporter as she bumps and grinds her way around stage, she oozes sex appeal but its hard for her to believe that. I was never a sexy to myself. I dont know and i think women who do walk around thinking they are very lucky. Because ive had to all my life say, do they really do they really see me ever since i started i was looked at since i was 16. I couldnt do anything. They just looked at me they didnt see me until now. I think possibly people see beneath that outside attitude. Ive always wanted to be sexy mind you but i never believed i was. Reporter but she is. And audiences can barely wait for her to finish her show so they can just to her feet and give her the standing ovation she so richly deserves. Jazz is of course the Truly American contribution to americas musical culture. It began just a little over a century ago. A mix of african and european traditions. But over time it has spread regionally and globally simulating other styles as it traveled. In 1995, jazz legend hamsted was on tour when he sat down with ktvu to discuss his career that started in the 1920s. I submitted an album just last week. I mean i finished the album that i started on several months ago and had the guest stars such as chaka khan. Stevie wonder and tito puente, alexander. Thats terrific. And you began. Louis armstrong had you as a drummer for his band. I was a drummer for louis when i was 16 years old. How did the microphone become such a part of your life. I was playing with a helper that did auditions when louis came from new york to Los Angeles California to play in a place called sebastians nightclub. I think sebastians nightclub. And so louis likes the band so well, the name of the band was called we took them to the studio to record with him. So when we got to the studio there were a set of sets on the corner. Louis asked me about the instrument. I said its a new instrument being introduced into the music field. He said do you know anything about it. As a teenager i was playing in a newspaper boys band. In chicago, i was playing in the orchestra Symphony Orchestra and i played the xylophone. You just picked it up and turned it into a jazz instrument. And a marching band instrument and you turned it into a jazz instrument. It wasnt at that time, it was very prominent for drummers to play. If you would play drums you had to be a percussionist and play the xylophones. It has been such a pleasure to meet you sir. Believe it or not. Do you do your tap dance every day. No, when im in new york i take lessons. He was called the king of swing. And many credit Benny Goodson for popularizing his type of jazz in the 1940s. Goodmans jazz was the first to play Carnegie Hall that came after a tour that began in mcfaddens in oakland and continued with a performance at the palomar ballroom in los angeles with a new sound that swept the country. Goodman heard lionel sing and asked him to join his jazz band. Jerry brown presented goodman with the first california jazz award. Still to come on a second look. We talked with east bay native dave ruback in the early 1990s. A bit later, recalling ben crosbys last u. S. Concert right here in the bay area. Look at you guys with your fancyschmancy uverse high Speed Internet. You know, in my day you couldnt just start streaming six ways to sunday. Youd get knocked off. And sometimes, it took a minute to download a song. Thats sixty seconds, for crying out loud. We know how long a minute is sitting, waiting for an album to download. I still have back problems. Youre only 14 and a half. He doesnt have back problems. You kids have got it too good if you ask me. [ male announcer ] now uverse high Speed Internet has more speed options, reliability and ways to connect. Rethink possible. As the organization sf jazz is getting ready to open their new location, we take a look back. Steve mcharpen sat down and chatted with ruben on mornings on ktvu. Man im here to tell you that theres some things i just love about this job. Listen to dave rubech play the piano is one of them. Welcome to mornings on 2. Thank you steve. Thank you for being on mornings on 2 today. Thank you. Its not every morning that we get a certifiable talent on mornings on 2. And im sure youre not okay with that. As long as im certifiable. Something we didnt know, you are a local man you grew up in concord. Out of my hotel room i could see many places ive worked in San Francisco. No kidding, really. Years i worked at the corner of turk and hine street it was called the blind clock. And were going back into the early 50s. The late 40s and late 50s. Sure, yes. I think when people think of jazz they feel that new orleans and chicago and new york i dont think people associate concord and the bay area a lot with jazz and youve told me thats wrong. Sure, some of the leading movements of today came out of stockton california. Gill evans who is considered next to Duke Ellington the greatest composer came out of if you dont know Dell Courtney you dont know San Francisco music. And another anson weeks came out of here. And his son played any band. Paul desmond. Paul desmond played with you for so many years. The collins brothers we all came out of this area. There was a lot going on here in the 50s. This whole city almost dominated what was going on in the country. Mortsal. The inston trio. Now youre getting into comedy and folk. The poets that were going on here. I bet you cant name a city that was more dominant in the culture of the United States than San Francisco in the 50s. I think youre probably right. Certainly in that era of our culture. Now lets talk about jazz. Since those early days of certainly not the early days of jazz but the early days of your career. How has it evolved or changed, or has it changed at all. Its changed geographically. New orleans, kansas city style, thats a city. Chicago style, thats a city. East coast, new york. While there was a San Francisco style they called it west coast school. So were just part of the evolution guys that came out of here. Thanks for playing this morning you certainly made our morning. You know history is repeating itself because my youngest son is playing with me tonight. Hes from San Francisco. And hes doing all the kinds of things i used to do here. Played jazz, classical joints everything. So hes going to be playing with me too. Go tonight and listen to the brubechs then. Brubechs then. We have a look at ben crosby getting ready for an appearance nearly 40 years ago. A conversation with trumpeter herb albert. Though often referred to as a crooner, ben crosby began as a crooner. In august 1977 two months before he died, crosby held his last concert in the United States at the concord pavilion. And thats where ktvus vern hopkins talked to him. Reporter with more than 4,000 records, 60 movies and countless live and tv appearances the superstar of them all still likes to rehearse. Reporter its hard to imagine any rough spots where ben crosby is concerned but he wants to make sure. He says he doesnt perform too differently today than he did 50 years ago. I suppose that the arrangements are different. And the charts are a little more modernized. Basically its the same. I think my range is probably, i cant go as high as i used to but i can go lower. So i havent lost any coverage. Its always nice to get back with good musicians. Sing some of the songs you love. I feel an audience respond you know and i would miss that if i had to abandon it. From here to europe in appearances in festivals and theaters and back to the states for more work. At 73, ben crosby still going strong because he says, he still likes an audience. When we come tonight on a second look, jazz musicians, one who has contributed both in the studio and the executive sweet is herb albert. Few may have known that he was the a in a and herbert. He also performed with the flats. Reporter herb albert had this look on the tijuana flats. Began with the top of the border sounds. A big year for the beatles, tijuana flats sold millions of records. Lonely bowl was is first album released. Some say albert is the most famous trumpeter. Who told you that . Something outside. Did al tell you that line . Reporter his company a l records is the largest privately owned. The other day herb albert dropped by the Recording Studio and though we havent heard much about him since he split up with the tijuana brass he is the still the constant showman. He is not a guy with a large ego. He will pick up his trumpet and entertain you without the need of pleads. Albert picked up his trumpet without succession. Albert said he split from the tijuana brass not with any bad feelings he was just overtired and he say it is group saw it coming. I was programmed in front of myself. I had commitments to do things six, eight months in front of myself. I wanted to make sure what i was doing, what herb albert was doing in 1969 was what he really wanted to do. What did you do when you took the time off . I did nothing. We traveled. Went to tahiti, traveled around the world. Reporter his wife was in the studio with him. Theyve been married for 20 years but they behaved more like newlyweds. Lonie was the lead singer with brazil 66. And we met on tour and we were friends for a number of years before we got serious. In 1969 i had it all. I had what everyone would consider the American Dream and i didnt feel too well inside so i wasnt wealthy at all. Reporter in a industry where Record Companies get swallowed and forgotten, a m is a success. Albert says the secret for success is listen to your gut. Were from the old school. The record business has changed quite a bit in the last 20 years. It used to be, its a lot more calculated now with a lot of lawyers are involved and people Market Research, everything. They Market Research of a record or group or we still feel like if you put out a great records theres going to be an audience for that audience some place. Its just our job to market it properly and promote it properly. As to whats next, he says he would like to be a cowboy in the movies, maybe keep playing with the tijuana brass. I have a pretty good therapist, you know. Reporter after that, he doesnt know what is in the future. Youre a good dancer. In San Francisco, im elane corral and that is segment two for tonight. Albert befriended another musician, stan getts late in his life. Thought as an artist and resident at jazz workshop until 1988. Bob mackenzie had an opportunity to interview stan getts. Reporter hes a legend of jazz. Per happen it is best tenor sax of all time. It was not a surprise when great musicians from all across the country and some from other countries signed up to play jazz under his watchful year. Stan gets to retire now spending time with the family has used to have to leave so often to go on tour. But he still plays and has learned that he loves to teach. Dont try to play too much. Just listen to me play a few bars. Im just boing to run the changes. Just stay in rhythm and to get the feel of it. But relax is the main thing. Right on the bone parts. One, two, three, four. I thought all the young musical talent wanted to play rock roll. Thank god, no. Really, more interested in jazz. I tell you a lot of them start with the rock roll because its their generation. But in time they found rock roll was boring and there was much more nuance in jazz. They could listen to a record several times and find something new in it. There is continuous high excitement and energy
