drive structure is nearly done. want to give you a live look at the work currently underway from news chopper two. the first one was deemed unsafe years ago which prompted transportation officials to come up with a plan to replace it with a new safer roadway. as you can see from the live pictures, they have been knocking down the drive. this work taking place starting friday around 8:00, its been continuing now since this time. doyle drive opened back in 1937, ultimately by 2015 the idea is to open what's called the presidio parkway. that's slated to open in 2015. that's a one billion dollar project that will include four tunnels, two bridges, a landscape median and safety shoulders. we are expecting an update any minute from caltrans. we have a crew there monitoring the press conference and when it starts we will bring it to you live. moving on we are going to talk with some of our reporter that have been fanned out across san francisco monitoring the work that's going on. again the work has been around the clock since 8:00 friday night. in order for crews to meet the monday morning deadline want to show you a map showing the portion of the drive that's closed. access to the bridge in marina and lombard has been off limits. the main approach will be from highway one. we are live from the construction site with the progress that was made today. >> reporter: yeah. we found this big shipping container to climb up onto give you a better view of the work that's going on. if you see you can take a look and see crews are working hard to meet tomorrow morning's deadline. chopper it flew overhead as crews laid out the last 40 truck loads of asphalt to build the temporary road to carry drivers past doyle drive. they will spend the rest of the hours putting the finishing touches on the road. >> at fault, paving, like cal work. >> reporter: we had the opportunity to go on it this afternoon and just like after the bay bridge construction caltrans is telling drivers to slow down on this stretch of road with the new turns. >> the reasons on the s curve on the bay bring everybody was posted. it's just that people were just -- looking around, trying -- and when you do you that get distracted and that's -- very critical. >> reporter: yesterday driver has to deal with delays of up to a half hour. that's because a lot of drivers didn't follow the recommended detours and wound up putting to much traffic on lincoln boulevard. today was a different story. police were on hand directing traffic. >> it was final. there was some traffic through, it was just detour. >> reporter: coming back to the live picture we are giving you a view of what the road looks like going toward san francisco. this is what driver also notice tomorrow morning. you can see the debris from the old doyle drive. caltrans said it may take the contractor up to two months to remove the rubble and they are reminding drivers to not rubber neck as they pass. keep year eyes on the road. we are live in san francisco. >> as you can see driver who use doyle drive will need to get used to the new road configuration. caltrans created this to give you a better picture. the underground viaduct seen here along with the new temporary roadway is set to be in place and ready for traffic starting tomorrow morning at five. nut road will have a mobile median barrier to accommodate shifts in traffic demand. still officials asking drivers to be patient and expect delays. news chopper 2 flew over some of the other route that would have been affected. traffic on the bay bridge was a bit heavy late this morning as you can see, car was lined up at the toll plaza. here is a look at the richmond san rafael bridge. traffic was fairly light in both directions. interstate 80 in emoryville was heavy. traffic was moving but there were a lot of drivers out onto roadway. >> and coming up later we will have a live report on how the doyle drive closure is a effecting some of the events last night. officers were called to a report of gun shots at the school on south street at about 9:30. when they are lived they say they found an 18-year-old suffering a gun shot wound. he was pronounced dead at the scene. police say they haven't made any arrests so far. the shooting is the 12th homicide of the year. police in oakland say a man was shot early this morning at the same housing complex where a father was gunned down earlier this month. the shooting this morning happened at the lock wood garden housing complex. it's on 65th avenue and east lawn stream the victim's nephew said it was the result of a home invasion robbery gone wrong. the complex is where a 24-year- old was shot to death back on april 18th while pushing his son in a stroller. the baby was not hurt. >> workers spent the afternoon cleaning up after a big tree fell onto a building. the tree came character down around noon today at grant and polk street. it fell onto a warehouse rupturing water and gas lines inside. forts and pg&e crews controlled it with in a few minutes. the trees date back to world war i and could be rotting. >> dozens of boats took to the waters today to celebrate the start of the bay area sailing season. news chopper 2 overhead this afternoon as decorated boats said through san francisco bay. it's all part of the 95th yearly opening day on the bay parade and this year's theme american spirit, celebrating the culture that make san francisco so unique. >> nice day to be outside on the bay or anywhere. its been warm, sunny but there is fog lingering out there. mark has a look at the current conditions >> the micro climate is really resurfacing, the fog make making a come back coast side but away from that completely different. temperatures in to the lower 80's for the warmest locations inland. as you can seat clouds regrouping especially into san mateo, that exclude bank will expand over the next few hours in to the overnight hours. current temperatures, you can see we still have 80s to report out toward fairfield, concord and livermore. san jose right now in at 80 and downtown san francisco 63 degrees, a bit of a sea breeze in with winds from other round ten to 20 miles an hour. for tonight you can expect this, coastal fog will hold onto the breezy conditions, tomorrow the cool coast, warm numbers inland and the extended will continue that cooling trend and that chance to shower. for right now the stam track up to the north a few high clouds in to northern cleidal but as we said we are track the fog bank off shore. that will push back in to the bay overnight and first thing tomorrow morning coolest location in the mid to upper who's for napa and santa rosa. livermore 48 degrees. coming up the coolest day of the workweek and when shower chances could be on the increase especially for one part of the bay area. >> sailing officials in southern california saito yacht crashed in a race yesterday leaving three dead and one misses. that happened yesterday near the border with mention mexico. they were competing in a 125- mile yacht race. a race organizer said the route goes through shipping channels and that the yacht may have been struck by a freighter. the accident just a few weeks after that sailing tragedy that left five dead. >> in new york city seven people including three children were killed in a vehicle crash near the bronx zoo. a van went off the highway in a remote area of the zoo. authorities say the van struck the median, crossed all learns of the highway and went through the guardrail and fell 50 feet. it crashed onto a part of the zoo that's closed to the public. all of the victims are from the same family. it's not clear what caused the van driver to loose control. >> a ballot initiative making the rounds. how it plans to regulate the cost of health care. >> it's something that hasn't happened in 14 years. the reason behind the large celebration at a church in san trying to keep the premiums under control. that's not the case with health insurance. tom shows us the effort underway to change that. >> are you a registered voter? >> yeah. >> reporter: as he did 24 years ago, harvey collected signatures for a ballot initiative, that time to regulate the out of control and unregulated health insurance rates. >> once we force insurance companies to open their books and prove under penalty of perjury that they need those rate increases we will give the insurance commissioner the power to stop them if they aren't justified. >> reporter: out of the 750,000 signatures needed he said 200,000 more are needed by may 15th. >> health insurance premiums have gone up 153% in the last ten years. >> reporter: allison said shernell rate see you rocketed again. ceremony in san francisco. about 2 hup people attended today's event coming across california. he is the first american to be ordained in that church in 14 years. he co founded a website, five- years must adopt a new name. his new name is the name of a saint who created the alphabet. they have to crawl in to the church for the ceremony to show humility. >> another effort in the search for a missing teen. sierra lamar. volunteers fanned out in remote areas this morning looking for signs of her. they were joined by team amber, that's a san diego group named after amber dubois. >> police in fremont are investigating a stabbing at a house party that left a football player dead. it happened last night at hyde park and yellowstone park drive. officers say when they arrived they found the man bleeding out a's was taken to the hospital where he died. the san jose mercury news said the victim is an 18-year-old. he was a running back and a linebacker for the football team. no arrests have been made. a police chase through three counties ended with when president -- when the suspect crashed in san jose. the driver was talking on his cell phone and weaving in and out of traffic. when officer say they tried to stop him he kept driving across the bay to haywood and then to san jose. officers set out spike strips. the van hit the strips and crashed. the driver was put under arrest on suspicious of dui and taken to the hospital. >> a 25-year-old press no man is in jail accused of killing a woman believed to be his estranged wife and wounding four others. the shooting happened friday night near the fresno state university campus. the victims has been identified as a 45-year-old tina banks. police have identified the suspect. the four people who were hurt are in the hospital where they remain in guarded condition. 20 years ago today los angeles erupted into riot, sparked by at quittal of four white police officers in the beating of rodney king. the riots lasted three days, 55 people were killed, more than 23 why injured. the total cost was estimated at a billion dollars. thousands of people clashed with los angeles police wearing riot career as parts of the city went this to chaos. >> it was clear we weren't taking control of the city and i think that message got out. they say what was happening and they just decide the free for all. >> i learned how to what i have seen today -- working with contractor and really have such a plan down to the 15 minute mark and they have been able to hit it all with complex demolition and then building up the road banks and now they are putting on the final details. with that i will turn it over to dave. if you are ready. yes. i mean overall work -- we are thrilled about this moment. i think we -- everybody saw a boyant community yesterday. it was interesting to be in the presidi, and have people picnicking watching. i have never seen anything quite like it. the city was ready to celebrate this change. with that i will turn it over to -- he will give you the construction details. thank you. >> thank you it. okay. project is good. [inaudible] in my last report we are doing a lot of kind of -- final touches, necessary work before we open the roadways, show you a couple pictures, went on top of the -- the machine, kind of to check it out and be sure it was in the right location. we will test it a couple of times before we open the roadways to give the operators a chance to get experience on it. as you know, we are not able to -- install the entire section the -- the quick change barrier until all the roadway is done. we will install the final pieces, run it through a couple of times, each movement of the barriers from one end to the other takes ten to 15 minutes. this is a first time this operator has had a chance to run this through at this installation. just important to have them test it. it's a large machine. i was -- it's a big machine. it's sitting up there, probably eight to february feet high. driving -- like you are sitting son top on top of it. we will testt. just a view from looking southbound 101, highway patrol keeping the roads closed for us. then the new configuration of the off ramp to southbound one. the far right lane, exit only. the lane -- to immediate right of it is option lane. two lane exit to 19th avenue where it's the option lane. you can go to southbound one or 101. >> this is after the toll plaza. this is the way it was prior to -- the start of construction . just some of the final checks, these are the caltrans signal operations, staff, checking all of the electronic science, all the programming, all the testing to make sure everything is correct. these are some of the final checks we to do. this is a controller box. we will -- you see a quick change barrier. it's all ready to go. we will have to sweep down the roadway, make sure it's clean for the public. looking toward the tunnel, heading southbound, you can see one of the science there, speed limit 35, it'll flash a lot of these types of messages until we open the roadway. we have regular standard, -- just to give the driver more of a heads up on what's out here. i know it's pretty bright. really nice. now you are heading southbound. along -- the retaining wall. you can see in the background one of the signals. this is -- this is what it looks like coming up. this is some of the work, along the south side, i shaded this morning at the 10:00 briefing. we are just kind of grading it back. because of all the demolition work in the area we couldn't install a lot of the parts of the signal system, the message signs, weeks prior to the opening, but -- in this case we aren't able to do that. couple weeks ago like we wanted to we would be able to -- do the normal jobs. that's why we happen to do this. practically, [inaudible] and the crews haven't tested it, to hook up all of the hiring the testing to make sure it works. some of the pavement work that's happened, shot these pictures, probably close to 2:00 a.m. all the paving work is done looking -- yeah i will get to that. looking northbound, signal system. this is part of the -- safety system up at the tunnel itself. type of tunnel and caltrans wanted to stop traffic, going inside the tunnel we would turn that signal red. the up team -- >> you have been watching live coverage of the update on the big doyle demolition project as we just heard on time, on schedule, caltrans crews believe that the new temporary roadway will reopen tomorrow morning. they are putting the finishing touches. expected to open at five monday morning. >> what'll it be? [ male announcer ] now everyone's up to speed. get high speed internet for $14.95 a month for 12 months. at&t. . continuing cover coverage. the demolition project just a few hours away from being done. you can see that right in the middle of your screen is the new roadway that people will drive on tomorrow morning. one thing we did learn at that -- news conference is caltrans said they need to test the movable barrier before they open that new roadway. the barrier is sometimes called a zipper median. if you have driven across the coronado bridge in san diego you have seen that. it's one that has a rig that moves from one lane to the other so instead of the orange cones that you see now being put on the bridge and the old doyle drive there will be a movable barrier that needs to be tested. the closure isn't keeping everybody out. kara is in san francisco where she found some die hard giants fans made their way to at and t park. >> reporter: getting to and from the ballpark on game day normally takes being patient. it took a bit more today. getting to at&t park for the giants, padres game was more than a bit frustrating for some. >> it was bad. >> reporter: detours due to the doyle drive closure showed traffic to a crawl in some spots, nearly tripling the drive time for many trying to get this to the city. >> we had to go through the richmond bridge and the jam there was just horrible. it took us two hours to get here. it usually takes 45 minutes. >> probably the worst i have seen coming here. i used to come back in the day and i hadn't come across anything that bad. >> reporter: the other big event. opening day at the bay, also drew crowds, traffic control officers directed cars through the marina. >> probably the biggest issue with a lot of pedestrians and it's sunday. a lot of people are out and the sun shining. >> reporter: people we found say they planned accordingly. >> not as bad as i thought it would be. we took the enter city so it only took about 25 extra minutes. >> they did a lot of pr advertising well just to make sure people have different routes and i feel like a lot of the city people use the other routes as well. it kept the city going. >> reporter: and folks coming up from the sought bay reported traffic issues were normal for a weekend game day. we are live in san francisco. >> numbers show traffic on the golden gate bridge was down 50%. rider ship onto ferries doubled with the last bay crossing carrying about 400 passengers last night. the district said it carried act the average number on golden gate transit buses. more on the closure including video of the demolition, you can visit ktvu.com. >> apple is getting huge profits reportedly in part because it's side stepping tax laws. they have avoided millions of dollars in taxes here in california and 20 other states by operating an office in nevada. the corporate takes rate here is 8.84%. in nevada it's 0. the strategy is legal and often used by other corporations but with the company bringing in such huge profits they are reducing their worldwide tax bill by billions of dollars a year. >> when we return, the new world trade center tower is set to hit a milestone tomorrow. the importance of one steel column and what it means for new york city. >> and the warm weather this weekend may be going out. mark is up next with when the bay area may see rain. . a construction crew will hoist a steel column tomorrow afternoon making the tallest building in new york city. this is a time l aps e photograph of the construction of the outer shell. the column scheduled to be placed tomorrow will be the start of the 100th floor of the number one world trade center. it'll stand 1, 271 feet. that's 12 feet higher than the empire state building. eventually it is scheduled to reach 1, 368 feet. the same height as the first world trade center. just 17 and his talent was recognized by fans across the nation and today he made his first public appearance in san jose. we caught up with him to talk about life after idol. american idol contestant gave a crowd at the east ridge mall a taste of what they heard on the show. hundreds showed up to see him, he was voted off a couple weeks ago. >> we stayed up to 2:00 a.m. making these shirts. he was like my favorite. >> reporter: why? >> his voice. >> reporter: the 17-year-old was honored by members of the city council with . its been a whirlwind. he gets recognized daily. >> just driving in the car people start following me and taking pictures while i'm driving. its cool. >> reporter: the senior said he watches american idol at home and is clearing on his friends. >> watching them but still thinking i was on that same show with them it's -- it's weird but it's just like nice to know that i was with them and i know them. >> reporter: he spent the afternoon signing autographs and meeting people. he hopes to get and make music. >> i'm sure he is going to be successl. he is a quote kid, very respectful and he has a lot of talent. >> reporter: he said he misses being on the show he is grateful for its fans and is expected to preform on the summer tour. >> its going to be crazy, preforming for my city and my hometown. >> reporter: he is finishing up his school work here he is set to fly back to la in a couple of weeks where he will preform on the finale. >> that fog is out there off shore and mark will tell us it'll creep in closer. >> it'll be moving back into the bay. as we head into monday and longer than that. right now as you can see, out looking toward oakland estuary. a bit of haze but wrapping up a beautiful sunday afternoon especially for the bay side locations, and also for the inside. taking a look at the fog a big factor this morning, right now clearing out to near the shoreline but still patches developing, cloud bank will increase over the next few hours because of that. you can so winds out of the northwest up to 25 miles an hour. as far as temperatures from today, a big range. you can see 64 in pacifica, all the way to the mid80's out toward fairfield and antioch, san jose topped out 83. a nice warm um today. across a big portion of the bay area. forecast headlines for tonight. we will continue to track the fog and still a bit of a breeze in the short term. tomorrow cool coast. still warm numbers inland but the extended everybody cools off a few degrees and we bring in this the chance of a few showers. this was the case today as high pressure command of the weather showing you the temperatures, 640s to the 80's and today the warmest day of the weekend, because we have this weather system developing up to the north. this area of low pressure dropping in. we will take it out to tuesday and thursday and by thursday, the warmest locations, no more 80s. no more 70s. the warmest locations up only in to the mid to upper 60's. meantime the fog forecast showing you this and the cloud cover on the increase somewhat coast side and around the bay first thing tomorrow morning, monday morning at eight and the clouds go book back to near the shoreline. everybody cooling off a few degrees tomorrow. the mid to upper 70's we could have a few spots. up toward antioch. oakland -- san jose around 75, still fog, especially for the morning hours coast side. becoming patchy in to the afternoon and san francisco, 65 degrees. here is a look ahead. the five-day forecast. the temperature trend, everybody cooling off to tuesday and wednesday. there is that chance of a shower into thursday, especially for the thursday morning hours and that would be favoring just mainly the north bay as a chances start to back off into the south bay and for the upcoming weekend we do warm it back up many by sunday. we have the timing just right to -- the nice warm up and cooling off just in time as we go back to work. >> last few weekends in a row have within sunny and nice. >> i have the formula just right. >> coming up the a's with a finish against baltimore that's hard to swallow. >> and the panda goes deep but was it enough?
