totally but didn't know it was a white supremist rally. a bond hearing is scheduled for tomorrow. the president reacted to all the violence in virginia by saying the country needs to come together as americans with what he called true affection for each other. he called for a stop to all the violence. >> we condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides, on many sides. it's been going on for a long time in our country, not donald trump, not barack obama. this has been going on for a long, long time and it has no place in america. >> apparently not everyone agreed with that quote. many sides were to blame for the violence. democrats and some republicans called on him to specifically denounce white supremists. that included marco rubio who criticize the president's stand. he tweeted: >> a white supremist web site called the daily stormer praised the president for what he said, posting the quote here, trump's comments were good. he didn't attack us. he just said the nation should come together. nothing specific against us. no condemnation at all. >> here is how other leaders are reacting to events yesterday in charlottesville. shortly after the attacks, vice president mike pence wrote i stand with potus against hate and violence. the u.s. is greatest when we join together and oppose those seeking to divide us. majority leader kevin mccarthy posted these statements this morning. our nation is built on a cornerstone of free speech. however, that foundation does not include hatred, bigotry or violence. the actions of malice and hate by white supremists have no place in society. congresswoman nancy pelosi  posted our nation is defined by the march of progress. our strength lies in our diversity. we must reject hate. ed lee with this statement, tolerance, inclusiveness and acceptance make up the dna of our city. we will stand up against hate. >> hundreds of people marching in oakland to condemn the violence in charlottesville. people met last night in downtown oakland holding signs and chanting messages against hate, bigotry and violence. the rally was mostly peaceful. a small group of people walked out on to interstate 580 near the grand avenue exit and blocked traffic before marching back downtown. there was also a candlelight vigil held in san francisco. the group bay area united against white supremists said the trump administration is partly to blame for yesterday's violence. 700 miles away from charlottesville in chicago people gathered because of more violence anywhere in the country. >> it's important for people to realize it could be happening to any of us, anyone in the street that wanted to stand up against white supremists and fascism. that is quite shocking for us. >> about 50 people held a candle lyle vigil and said prayers for the woman killed in charlottesville. they said it was important to come together and share feels of sadness and anger and was appropriate to hold the event outside of trump tower. a rally against white supremacy is scheduled later today. >> there are lots of rallies planned throughout today as a show of of throwing bleach on a woman last month blinding her. the photo shows the suspect on a bike. this attack happened on july 30th outside of a liquor store on mason street. police say there was an argument outside the store before the man threw bleach in the woman's eyes before taking off on his bike. highway 37 in the north bay repairs start tonight. they will be out about 9:00 to do pavement it, wait. >> thanks, rosemary. happening today, vice president mike pence is set to meet with the president of columbia later this afternoon. it's the start of a week long trip to serial south american nations including argentina and chile. one of the big topics will be following the crisis and the upheaval in venezuela. last week president trump said a military option is on the table to stop power grabs by the government there. protestors in venezuela continue to go head to head with the national guard. opponents were seen throwing stones at officers who responded with rubber pellets and tear gas. a state of emergency has been issued in bolivia because of wildfires. a fire spread to more than 46 square miles and 700 people were evacuated. crews continue to work in that area to try to get it under control. 20,000 volunteers are in the area to hand out supplies such as food and water to those in need. all right, 7:15 on the clock. virginia's governor is addressing a baptist people that came into our state, 80% of them i was told, carried firearms. marching up and down our beautiful city with semi- automatic rifles. this is not what men and women are fighting for to protect around the globe. they are not putting their lives on the line to let the hatred and bigotry exist in our country, they are not. >> i want to thank the men and women, local, state and federal, after a white supremist rally that left three people dead. >> more protests are happening around the country and here in the bay area. hundreds marched in downtown oakland. lee martinez is in san jose in the south bay where another rally is planned this morning at city plaza there. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. these counter protests are popping up and spreading the word on social media. there is one planned for 10:30 at the san jose civic plaza. yesterday evening we saw the first counter protest in oakland. that was attended by several hundred people. we heard reports of probably thousands of people. there were no major problems. there was about 100 people that crossed on to i-5 80 but most of the protestors left before midnight. an impromptu emergency rally was held. thousands marched through the streets. at one point fireworks were set off. the group bay area united against white supremacy laying blame on president trump, comments from the president that didn't go far enough in denouncing the violence and condemning the white nationalists. the president said there was hatred, bigotry on many sides but didn't call out white supremists. james taylor weighed in. >> the president's statement was generic, nonspecific intentionally because donald trump did not want to alienate the sort of hard right element of his base. so, any president could have given that -- those comments related to any generic incident in the united states. >> reporter: now, yesterday in charlottesville the former kkk david duke tweeted at president trump, quote, i would recommend you take a good look in the mirror and remember it was white americans that put you in the presidency, not radical leftists. tom said he doesn't think we should signify anything they say as leigh. fire investigators are looking for the cause of a fire in petaluma. it broke out inside a two car garage on a home on cherry street. thick black smoke was seeping out of the carriage doors. they -- garage doors. they kept the fire from spreading to the home. of. renters in alameda rallied in support of an ordinance that protected tenants from being evicted without cause. people showed their support for an amendment that required landlords for giving specific reasons for evicting renters. people say they fear losing their homes and not being able to move anywhere else because of the high cost of rent. >> they accused people of being drug addicts, prostitutes for no cause evictions. they slander people to get them out of town. >> almeda's rent stabilization ordinance will expire disappointing news for fans of the group a tribe called quest after they canceled their perform answer again on saturday at the outside lands festival. they were supposed to perform at the opening or if they will recede dull a performance in the bay area. smart train commuter service is being held up by a federal review focusing on the high-tech safety system. this is according to the marin solar rays. experts warn some companies are making fake eclipse glasses. >> there is an iso standard that specifies to what degree you need to manufacture a product to be safe for viewing the sun. there are apparently some vendors who have been using that label on their products even though it doesn't meet the specification. >> we have a link of where the american astronomical society recommends buying safe viewing glasses at ktvu.com under weblinks. the oregon park service is warning campers ahead of the eclipse. thousands are expected to visit the state. it will bring dramatically changing tides on the coast of oregon. oregon park staff said increased risk of riptides is possible, asking visitors to heed warnings not to camp on the beaches on the coast. during the 8:00 hour, we will talk to some camping experts about the best place and safest places to catch the eclipse if you are heading to oregon. there is an awesome place here in the bay area to watch the partial eclipse if you can't get to that path of totality. chabot space and science center is promising a great experience to remember. reporter: the chabot space and science center is high above oakland. the history rooted in a love of as -- astronomy. >> the first director back in -- he was hired in 1885, he had been working in an insurance company in oakland. he was an astronomy enthuse wrists. he was -- enthusiast. he had a telescope in his backyard. >> he was an eclipse chaser. he planned and mounted expeditions around the world back in the late 1800s when it was a bigger deal than today. they would go by ship and he would spend a couple of months going out to places like india or he went to japan to watch one but it was cloudy that time and he didn't get to see it. he had a special telescope and camera and equipment that he developed. he developed the tech neck for photographing a solar eclipse that produced at the time the best solar eclipse photos in the world. >> reporter: photos that are a bit of legend at chabot. >> tell me where we are heading. >> the dome for the 8-inch telescope lea, 1883 vintage telescope that started chabot. >> reporter: where do you want to be during those two minutes. >> i would like to be in idaho. >> reporter: but you will be here? >> i will be here. >> reporter: the view from the bay area will be a partial view but it will still be a sight to see. >> we will see about three quarters of the sun's surface covered up by the moon. >> which is still cool. >> enough of the sun covered up so you will notice a change in the lighting conditions around. it will look dimmer, crisper. >> reporter: he said this animation of the 2012 partial eclipse gives us an idea of what to expect. >> that is anniversary any imagine taken from space. the image of the sun you are seeing is an ultra violate image. -- ultraviolet image. you are seeing the moon cross over that. if this was anniversary any medication of a total solar eclipse, even as the moon covered all the sun's disk, you would notice that there is this extended atmosphere around the sunshining ultraviolet light. it will take place over two hours or more. the peak of the eclipse, when most of the sun is covered up is 10, 15 in the morning. but it will be a gradual thing. people have plenty of opportunity to look through the telescopes. >> reporter: you can watch through chabot's 8-inch telescope which kiss over 100 years old. >> we will rotate the dome so the doors are looking that way. >> reporter: or you can head outside to the deck where there will be a number of ways to watch the eclipse safely. >> come around this side and look down on the paper, you will see an image that is bland today. there is no sun spots. one on the edge there. >> this kind of an event where it's an outdoor event, observatory deck gets filled, we can expand to the hillside and parking lot and share filters and projectors and things like that. a tree or a bush that casts a shadow on the ground or under the wall, the spots of light coming through the leaves, ordinarily it's a dazzling array of lights and it will become this cloud of crest scenes. -- crescent. >> reporter: nature will be putting on a show. just the experience can be something to remember. >> it's fun to come up and share the experience with people as well. >> so, it's interesting. we will see city thanks to oracle. design tech opened in 2014 through a partnership between oracle and the school district. according to the mercury news the school will move to the redwood shores campus in give the students a more real world learning experience. >> interesting. many students in san francisco will be starting the school year well prepared. thousands of elementary, middle school and high school students got free backpacks filled with everything that a school child needs to succeed in the classroom. they got uniforms as well. the event was part of a yearly give away organized by the san francisco public defender's office. >> a florida middle school is backing off from a controversial fund-raising proposal for the parent teacher students organization. ptsa suggested every parent could pay 100 bucks to send a student to the front of the lunch line. a form was included in the orientation pact. parents went to social media with their negative reaction to the plan. >> if we are putting kids in front because dad has money and this dad doesn't, why didn't that click. like this is 2017, this is not 1960s. we are not telling people to go to the back of the bus because you are poor. that's stupid. when the superintendent and the principal of the school in lakeland heard about the idea they canceled the plan. later the ptsa sent out a note saying it was an idea that was discussed but never approved. the spokesperson information program was sent out in an orientation pact because of a clerical error. we are continuing to follow the developing news out of news this morning. we are following the latest from charlottesville, virginia. a state of emergency is in effect after a violent clash at a white supremist rally left three people dead. a 32-year-old woman was killed and 26 others injured when a car plowed into a car of counterprotestors. cell phone video shows the car crashed into another car then back up and barrel through the crowd. police arrested this man, 20- year-old james alex fields junior from ohio. he is facing a number of charges, second-degree murder and hit and run. the rally was chaotic before the crash with people fighting in the street and police in riot gear trying to break things up and bring calm. two state troopers were killed when the helicopter crashed into the woods as they tried to respond. >> i have a message for the white supremists and nazis that came in to charlottesville today. our message is go home. you are not wanted in this great commonwealth. shame on you. >> yesterday's rally is believed to be the largest gathering of white nationalist in a decade. the man facing charges for the crash recently moved to ohio and grew up in kentucky. his mother saying she knew her son was going to the rally but didn't know he was a white supremist or white supremist rally. a bond hearing is scheduled for this man tomorrow. people in the bay area took to the streets when violence erupted in charlottesville. hundreds marched in solidarity in downtown oakland. >> more protests happening today. leigh martinez is in san jose where another rally is planned at city plaza. good morning. >> reporter: yes, that's right. the deadly white supremist rally in virginia is inspiring counterprotests throughout the bay area. they are being organized on social media. the first we learned of is one that is scheduled here in san jose civic plaza set to begin at 10:30 this morning. the first counter demonstration that we saw yesterday was in oakland. hundreds of people attended that counter demonstration marching through the streets. at some point about 100 people went on to interstate 580, quickly came back downtown. the majority of that protest was very peaceful and demonstrators ended up leaving, disbursing before midnight. an emergency rally was held at lathem square. thousands of people marched throughout the streets. at one point fireworks were set off. the group bay area united against white supremacy laying blame for the violence in charlottesville on president trump. comments from the president, many say didn't go far enough in denouncing the violence. president trump said there was hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides but didn't specifically call out white supremacists. ucsf political science professor james taylor weighed in. >> i think the president's statement was generic and nonspecific because donald trump didn't want to alienate the sort of hard right element of his base and, so, any president could have given those comments related to any generic incident in the united states. >> reporter: now, yesterday in charlottesville drafted duke tweeted at president trump, quote, i would recommend you take a good look in the mirror and remember it was white americans that put you in the presidency, not radical leftists. the former president of the republican party said he doesn't think we should dig any identify anything they are saying as -- dig any identify anything they say. the first rally is at 10:30 in san jose civic plaza. at the rally in oakland, we heard of counterprotestors talking about another white supremist rally or antimarxist rally in berkeley in late august. they have been talking about that and there are plans to do another counter demonstration later on this month. >> all right, leigh martinez live for us in san jose, thanks. the president reacted to the violence in virginia saying the country needs to come together with americans with what he called true affection for each other and called for an end to the violence. >> we condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides, on many sides. it's been going on for a long time in our country. not donald trump, not barack obama. this has been going on a long time. it has no place in america. >> you heard the president say many sides. that got a lot of controversial responses with not everyone agreeing with that statement. democrats and some republicans called on him to specifically denounce white supremacy and racially motivated hate. that included former presidential candidate marco rubio who criticized the president's stance saying violence was a terror attack by white supremists. a white supremist web site praised the president for posting the quote on the screen. tom' comments were good. he didn't attack us. he just said the nation should come together. nothing specific against us. no condemnation at all. here is reaction to the events yesterday in charlottesville. president trump had this to say. we will continue to follow developments in charlotteville and provide whatever assistance is needed. we are ready, willing and able. east bay congresswoman barbara lee called out president trump posting this on twitter, make no mistake, the white supremists in charlottesville feel emboldened by the trump administration. all americans must condemn the bigotry. the governor of virginia posted this tweet around 6:00 this morning: this morning the governor of virginia visited two churches in charlottesville asking for peace and the end to hatred and bigotry. the governor said he was angry and sad last night. he said now everyone must stand together to secure equality for all americans. >> let us use hope. let us use today to reach out to our fellow citizens, put your hand out to help, let us show these people that we are bigger than them. we are stronger than them. [ applause ] >> the governor went on to say the violence from yesterday should inspire everyone to aim to do better and help stop the rhetoric that leads to violence here in our country. in chicago, 700 miles way from the protest scene, people gathered to call attention to the possibility of more violence anywhere in the country. >> it's important for people to realize that it could have been any of us, anyone in the streets that wanted to stand up against white supremacy. it's shocking for us. >> about 50 people held a candlelight vigil and said prayers for the woman killed in charlottesville. they said it was important to come together and share their feelings of sadness and anger. and it was appropriate to hold it outside of chicago's trump tower. a rally is scheduled later today in chicago. there are a lot of local protests planned for the bay area. we will continue to follow the latest from charlottesville in the bay area. we will bring you updates as they come help to find a man suspected of throwing bleach at a woman last month blinding her. police released surveillance photos of the man they are looking for. photos show this man riding the bike. it happened july 30th outside of a liquor store on mason street. there was an argument outside the store before the man threw the bleach in the woman's eyes then took off on his bike. if you got any information or know who the man is, be sure and call the san francisco police. repairs on highway 37 in the north bay start today. crews will be out at 9:00 this evening to do pavement repairs. you protest would be at san jose here at civic center plaza at 10:30 a.m. we are getting reports there may be an earlier counter demonstration in walnut creek this morning. the very first counter demonstration was held last night in the city of oakland where hundreds of people took to the streets. however, there were no acts of vandalism. everyone left before midnight. in oakland thousands marched throughout the streets. at one point fireworks were set off. briefly a mall group blocked interstate 580 west of grand avenue. the group bay area united against white supremacy laying blame on president trump, comments from the president that didn't go far enough in denouncing the violence and condemning the white nationalists. the president said there was hatred, bigotry on many but didn't the teenager driving and live streaming when her car crashed killing her young sister. police say the 18-year-old was driving drunk live streaming on instagram. her defense attorney says a mechanical problem may have cause thed the dent -- caused the accident. her 14-year-old sister was thrown from the car and died. she is pleading not guilty. some l.a. county sheriff's deputies are buying their own body cameras. many of the deputies say they want to have protection from the video. according to the associated press, l.a. county inspector general says 20% of the 10,000 deputies bought the cameras. the american civil liberties union calls it recipe for disaster and raises transparency and legality issues because the cameras are not sanctioned. the sheriff says the department is putting together a policy for those privately owned cameras. >> the launch of smart train commuter services being held up by a federal review focusing on the high-tech safety system that will be used in the sonoma marin transit system. it was first installed in a colorado train but there were problems with it. smart officials say the safety system worked well for them but they need federal regulators to sign off on everything. in alameda, advocates gathered on the steps of city hall in support of a recently approved amendment that requires landlords to cite specific reasons for effecting a renter. ktvu's leigh martinez has more. >> reporter: the island of alameda doesn't have many available rental properties. renters fear an eviction would force them to move for away from where they grew up in the bay area. >> i came home the other day and i saw a white envelope on my door. i was too afraid to open the door. i looked at it. there was nothing on the outside. i was shaking with fear. >> reporter: these renters say eviction is a real fear. they have been battling property owners for rent control and just cause evictions. >> they accuse people of being drug addicts. they slander people to get them out of town. >> reporter: renters won a battle. alameda city council voted to amend the rent stabilization ordinance to adjust cause protections for tenants. landlords need to cite a specific reason to evict a tenant. one local landlord said he is fighting on the renter's side. >> rent control won't affect decent landlords. it allows for reasonable rent increases, maintenance, just cause eviction and evicting bad tenants. so, basically, any landlord who thinks that he or she will be seriously effected by rent control is a jerk. >> reporter: the demonstration was brought on because of a recent petition circulating around the city asking for a charter amendment. >> it would take the current week, none rent control law -- nonrent control law and freeze it. >> we are going door to door to get people to sign. >> reporter: that petition followed another petition filed in june by a group representing landlords to restore the no cause provision which will put just cause on states and there still are camping options available on hip camp under $100. >> that's what i was going to ask. >> we are in. >> how about tips for finding these and say we are going to oregon, how do we do it? >> tips would be to definitely book in advance. i am one to, you know, generally wing it when it comes to camping but this time go to hip camp. we have a filter on the web site for searching for the clips. go to the eclipse map, zoom in for options. other tips would be to buy the right glasses. a lot of people are selling knock offs, aftermarket versions that are not safe. then thirdly i would say prepare for traffic. >> are there -- we have been told oregon and idaho are maybe the best places. where are you finding the most availability in terms of camp sites on private land? >> you know, because people are lifting their land every day, i see it come in as part of my job, working with the landowners, so, it's all along the path there is availability. >> one last question if i rally left three people dead. h.r. mcmaster said yesterday's violence meets the definition of terrorism. a 32-year-old woman was killed and 26 others were hurt when a car plowed into a crowd of counter-protesters. the cell phone video shows the car crashing into another car and then backing up and barreling through the crowd. police arrested the driver, james alex fields jr. of ohio. the rally was chaotic before the crash with people fighting and police in riot gear trying to break things up. two state troopers were also killed when their helicopter crashed into the woods as they tried to respond. >> i have a message to all the white supremacists and the nazis who came into charlottesville today. our message is plain and simple. go home. you are not wanted in this great commonwealth. shame on you. >> investigators say the man arrested for the crash recently moved to ohio and grew up in kentucky. he's facing charges that include second-degree murder and hit and run. a bond hearing is scheduled for tomorrow. people here in the bay area quickly took to the streets after the violence in charlottesville turned deadly. hundreds of people marched against white supremacy. they marched in solidarity in downtown oakland. >> more counter-protests are happening today here in the bay area and around the country. leigh martinez is in san jose where another rally is planned. good morning. >> reporter: we have these anti- white supremacy demonstrations happening throughout the bay area. the earliest one happening in walnut creek in the 9:00 hour. and then we have this one here in san jose civic center plaza starting around 10:30. now the very first counterdemonstration we saw came last night in the city of oakland. thousands of people took to the streets there. there were no major skirmishes or vandalism. everyone left around 11:30 last night. in oakland an emergency solidarity rally organized on social media. thousands marched throughout the streets and at one point fireworks were set off. briefly a small group blocked interstate 580 west. laid blame for the violence in charlottesville on president trump. comments from the president many say didn't go far enough in denouncing the violence and condemning the white nationalists. president trump said there was hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides, but didn't specifically call out white supremacists. ucsf political science professor weighed in. >> i think the president's statement was generic and was nonspecific intentionally because donald trump did not want to alienate the sort of right -- hard right element of his base. and so any president could have given those comments related to any generic incident in the united states. >> reporter: but the former president of california's republican party spoke out in support of the president. >> like a parent of many children who finally says to them spatting, enough by all of you. that's a good step for this president. >> reporter: there are going to be several counter- demonstrations happening in the bay area today. north bay, south bay, east bay. i do have a list of where some of these protests are going to be held. we do have two in san francisco. one happening this morning in walnut creek. freemont, novado, castro valley, vallejo and another in oakland. the earliest one is happening in the 9:00 hour in walnut creek. then at after being hit by a car that rammed into a group of people in charlottesville. friends say 32-year-old heather heyer was there to protest racism and hate. they were hoping to raise $50,000 for her family. after 12 hours donations topped $87,000. friends are not ready to release the details about her family as they are still dealing with the shock of her death. it is 9:08 now. some l.a. county sheriff's deputies are buying their own body cameras. many of the deputies say the video gives them some reainsurance on the job. l.a. county inspector general estimates that 20% of the county's 10,000 deputies have already bought cameras. the american civil liberties union is against the idea calling it a recipe for disaster. say it will raise several issues because the cameras are not sanctioned. sheriff says the department is puppetting together policy for those privately owned cameras. san francisco police are asking for the public's help to find a man suspected of throwing bleach on a woman last month, blinding her. police releasing surveillance photos of the man they're looking for on friday. photo shows a suspect on a bicycle. the attack happened july 30th outside of a liquor store in the tenderloin. police say there was an argument of some sort outside the store before the man threw the bleach into the woman's eyes and took off on that bike. if you have information, you're asked to give sfpd a call. repairs on highway 37 in the north bay start today. crews will be out starting at 9:00 right now as into the evening to do pavement repairs between stags island. expect lane closures until around 5:00 tomorrow morning right before the commute heats up. the work will happen for the next five nights. if you're heading out this morning and plan to use stop power grabs by that government. protesters in venezuela continue to go head to head with the national guard. yesterday opponents were seen throwing stones at officers who responded by firing rubber pellets and tear gas. according to state officials, more than 100 people have died since april due to political unrest in that country. a bay area nurse and her husband are making an emotional plea. they came to the united states illegally 25 years ago and are now facing deportation this week. i talked to her about the impact on her family. >> i'm sorry. i've been trying to be as strong as i can. ask. >> reporter: 46-year-old maria mendoza sanchez couldn't hold back the tears. her battle lasted 15 years and was denied at every turn. come tuesday the mother of four, her husband and 12-year- old son will board a plane back to their native mexico on a one way ticket. all three deported. leaving behind three daughters ages 16, 21 and 23 with no chance of returning for the next 10 years. >> fought and fought. i even asked them to please not to come to the airport because -- i'm not even sure how they're going to make it back home. >> reporter: maria and her husband entered the u.s. illegally and worked hard. he is a truck driver. maria put herself through college and is now a cancer care nurse. they own their oakland home and have lived in the united states on valid work permits until this past spring. >> this administration, nay want good people and that's who my family is. >> we have some bad hombres here. >> they don't want bad hombres. they parents have never, ever done anything. no criminal convictions. none of us either have ever been in trouble with the law. not even in trouble at school. >> reporter: a spokesperson for i.c.e. said over the last 15 years the couple's case went through an exhaustive review. the courts have consistently held that neither of these individuals has a legal basis to remain in the u.s. their oldest daughter is 23 and will be the legal guardian for her two younger sisters. however, she is not a u.s. citizen and if that program is shut down she too could be deported. >> it's really hard to think about. it's a way of dying we're told another counter- protest is supposed to happen here at 10:30. >> thanks. a long day ahead. the attorney for the teenager charged with driving drunk and live streaming the crash says a blown tire is to blame. was driving drunk while live streaming on instagram when she veered off the road. the defense attorney says a mechanical problem could be what caused the accident. the tire blew out because of wear and tear. authorities say she swerved then overcorrected and that caused the car to flip. her 14-year-old sister was thrown from the car and died. sanchez is pleading not guilty to drunk driving and vehicular manslaughter. launch of a smart train commuter service is being held up by a federal review. the review is focusing on the high-tech safety system that will be used on that rail transit system. that's according to the marin independent journal. that system was first installed by colorado train last year, but there have been problems with it. smart officials say the safety system has worked well for them but they need federal regulators to sign off on everything before they can begin scheduled operations and carrying passengers. cal trans will be one of the employers looking for new workers at a job fair that happens later this week. military service members, veterans, military spouses all invited to the hiring our heroes event at at&t park. that'll be on thursday starting at 9:00 that morning. workshops for job seekers and employers will be holding interviews between 11:00 that morning until 2:00 in the afternoon. all veterans, military spouses who register for the event will be given two tickets to thursday night's game with the giants and the phillies. in support of an ordinance protecting tenants from being evicted without a cause. a group met to show their support for an amendment that was approved in may. it requires landlords to give specific reasons for evicting renters. the rally was organized after landlords circulate the their own petition to remove the amendment. people are worried about losing their homes. >> they accuse people of being drug addicts, prostitutes for no cause evictions. they slander people to get them out of town. >> the rent stabilization ordinance is set to expire in 2019. friends, families and strangers will gather to support a local woman fighting cancer. >> i just wanted to say thank you to 6:00. other news now. a high school will soon be moving to a new high-tech campus in redwood city. it's thanks to oracle. design tech high school opened three years ago. through a partnership between oracle and the san mateo union school district. the school will move to the redwood shores campus in january. this is an artist's rendition of what that new school will look like. oracle says its employees will play a role in it helping to give the students a more real world learning experience. today is the final day of outside lands in san francisco. legendary rock band the two headlines tonight at 7:30. the lineup also features lorde and k. flay. >> there was one group that didn't play. disappointing news of the fans of a tribe called quest. they were supposed to perform on friday and then they were supposed to perform last night but they canceled again. at this three day festival in if san francisco's golden gate park. the set was pushed back because of apparent travel issues and no word on whether they are going to try to reschedule a performance in the bay area any time soon. passengers on the freemont line should expect delays this morning. maintenance crews cutting back trees that have hung over the tracks between the freemont and south hayward station. trains are single track and along that corridor. causing a good 20 to 40 minute delay. it the work is scheduled to wrap up at 11:00 this morning. we are a little over a week away from that total solar eclipse. while the path of totality will be up in oregon and idaho, there are still ways to watch. of blue. mostly sunny skies away from the coastline for today. temperatures going to be on the mild side. i'll have a look at what you can expect for your sunday fun day and the workweek ahead coming up. 9:42 on the clock. if you can't head to the path of totality on august 21st to watch the solar eclipse, you are not out of luck. this is a space and science center in the east bay hills. it's a great way to watch the partial eclipse. eclipse chasing is just woven into their history. the space and science center hits high above oakland. it's history rooted in a love of astronomy by those who have for years chased the eclipse. >> the first director back in 1885 was charles. he had been working in an insurance company in oakland. he was an astronomy enthusiast. he was touted as the first in oakland to own a telescope. >> he didn't apparently spend that much time in the backyards. if you think getting to the path of totality is tough these days, try doing it with a horse and wagon. >> he was an eclipse chaser. he planned and mounted expetaluma kicks around the world back in the late 1800s whether it was a bigger deal than today. they would go by ship and he would spend a couple months going out to places like india or he went to japan to watch one. unfortunately it it was cloudy that time. he had a special telescope and camera and equipment he developed. he developed a technique for photographing a solar eclipse that produced at the time the best solar eclipse photos in the world. >> photos that have since become a bit of legend. >> tell me where we're headed. >> we're heading to the dome for our eight inch telescope. the 1883 vintage telescope that started the observatory. >> this is where a staff astronomer will be during the eclipse. >> where do you want to be during those two minutes? >> i'd like to be up in idaho. >> but you'll be here. >> i'll be here. >> the view from the bay area will only be a partial view. but it will still be a sight to see. >> we will see about three quarters of the sun's surface covered up by the moon. >> which is still cool. >> it's enough so you will notice a change in the lighting conditions around. it'll look dimmer, crisper. >> this animation of the 2012 partial eclipse gives us a good idea of what to expect. >> that's animation taken from space. the image of the sun you're seeing is an ultraviolet image. all the light you're seeing is not the visible light. you're seeing the moon cross over that and if this were an animation of the total solar eclipse, even as the moon covered up all of the sun's disk you would notice that there is this extended atmosphere around the sunshining ultraviolet light. the partial eclipse we'll be watching will take place over two hours or more. peak of the eclipse when most of the sun is covered up is about 10:15 in the morning. it'll be a gradual thing. so people will have plenty of opportunity to look through the telescopes. >> observers can watch the eclipse through the eight inch telescope named leah which is over 100 years old. >> we'll rotate the dome so the doors are looking that way. people will be over here. >> or you can also head outside to the deck where there will be a number of ways to watch the eclipse safely. >> come around this side and look down on the paper. you'll see a little image. pretty bland today because there's no sun spots except one on the edge there. this kind of an event where it's an outdoor event. our observatory deck gets filled. we can expand on to the hillside and the parking lot and share filters and projectors and things like that. a tree or a bush that casts a shadow, the spots of light coming through the leaves ordinarily it's a dazzling array. it will become this beautiful cloud of crescent. so nature will also show the way. >> nature will be putting on a show. while it's a chance to learn, just the experience can be something to remember. >> it's always a lot of fun to share the experience with people as well. >> hope you kept the glasses. >> i do have some glasses. they're hard to find. >> yeah. i guess there's a lot of knockoffs. >> you have to make sure -- >> it's fascinating. hasn't happened in what, 100 years where it's gone coast to coast in the states. >> 1918. it's a little bit confusing to figure out. why is this different? so just to make sure that we kind of are clear. the last total eclipse to cross the united states like this one does, where it goes across, 1918. the last total eclipse to touch any part of the mainland was 1979. enter that was what, five states? >> yes. i think it was five. the last total seen in northern california was 1889. so the bay area has been waiting a while to see a total eclipse here. >> if you're not heading to oregon, you'll wait a lot longer. >> we'll have full coverage on monday, august 21st to see all of it. the total, partial. our coverage begins at 9:00 in the morning. >> should be a lot of fun. we're about 70% here? >> 70%. you'll see
