The congresswoman echoed those feelings on twitter saying showing signs of erratic behavior and mental instability placing the country in great danger. September 9 will mark the seventh anniversary of the san bruno explosion that killed eight people and destroyed dozens of homes. Jim ruane was the newly elected mayor when the tragedy happened and since then he has led san bruno to the aftermath investigation and sentencing of pg e now he is stepping down when his term ends in november choosing not to run for election the mayor of san bruno, jim ruane think you for coming in. You could have rebuilt you could have moved on but you didnt. Tell me about that. Well, that evening we thought it was a horrible accident come to find out it couldve been prevented so we were not going to let it go. We could have rebuilt the neighborhood but there was more to it a lot more to it. There was collusion, there was illegal activity, there was communication going back between the utility so we were not going to let her go. When you started peeling back the story were you just surprised at what you found page after page . You couldnt make it up. It was shocking daily. Thousands upon thousands of emails showing communications between the utility and the regulator that were blatantly illegal. Finally the federal prosecutors decided to indict pg e and they were convicted on six felony accounts. Five for the safety act and one of obstruction of justice which occurred after the explosion. Given all that has been going on what have residents told you over the years . What is the one message you have heard . Are they glad you held them accountable or what . There are a lot of different things. You guys have done a great job, there is still a lot of grief but in the Bigger Picture i think we really stepped forward to rebuild the community. The community will be rebuilt by the first of next year sometime with a much larger top lot with a drawbridge. So for me frankly it is a very very rewarding experience. To see the resilience of this devastated community who could have just said okay lets rebuilt. I think in san bruno we have taken a better look at Pipeline Safety overall with the utilities and regulators that have watched this whole ordeal. It has changed the country quite a bit for a good thing so something good has to come out of this and i think a number of things have. For better or worse san bruno will be defined by that night. Do you feel you are leaving any Unfinished Business . I mean there were no not entire closure but as you step away do you feel there are worrying things you wish you could do . While, in the Bigger Picture we have done a lot so i am satisfied with the city council and the city manager and staff. It has been remarkable, the small city we have kept our head above water through thick and thin. You never know what will be thrown at you but i never expected this. Four trips to washington, to norland, to sacramento, to new york to bloomberg to 60 minutes. Right, and you had to heal your own city despite all of the traveling. One dozen people died, one dozen were injured. Are there any stories that still hit you the most emotionally . I can tell you one and there was a good friend of mine who turned out he had a good friend of his who lost a mother and a daughter in the explosion. He approached me and he said do you think i could get to the site . This was relatively shortly after. They wanted to search for belongings may be some wedding rings or something. Keep in mind the houses were totally incinerated. The only thing left was nothing. I said let me work this out. So we got them in there put him in the suit and all the wrappings and he went to the location of the residents and i went down there and met him and he came out with tears in his eyes and i said whats the matter . He pulled out two wedding rings out of his pocket he said they told me where they might have been in the house so we searched. Things like that you can reflect but you cant say is a good bad great ride round . It is just something that happened and touched the hearts of a lot of people. And there are more stories like that. Is anyone trying to convince you to stay . A lot of people have tried to convince me to state or run for other office but, i have not planned to do it even this long and i thought for consistency we have the only elected mayor in our county. So i decided to run to see this through and although pg e is under fiveyear probation and they still have some Community Service to conduct i think it is about time for me to step out of this. Well, we hated to cover that tragedy but we are glad the city had a great leader. I appreciate you having me here. This is exciting for me. Mayor jim ruane think you for joining us. Start coming up, back to mexico after a long battle to stay in the country. What happened moments before an oakland nurse and her family boarded a plane to mexico. Chasing a Solar Eclipse, the astronomy professor who has tried to witness Solar Eclipses all over the world. Nanana a little soul a little tune to play to make the good times roll here we go nanananananana nanananananana here we go crazy square eyyyyy crazy square uh oh from our crazy delicious family to yours. Crave those crazy squares in about one hour pg e will hold a News Conference outlining their plans to make sure mondays Solar Eclipse will not cause lighting issues. The eclipse will impact the power grid solar panels meet the sun to generate electricity and the eclipse will cut solar energy by 75 in the bay area. They predict at the peak of the eclipse around 10 15 monday morning there could be an Energy Shortage of up to 2600 megawatts. Pg e along with the state Public Utilities commission are coordinating services. The energy gap will be filled with resources like hydropower. For many people the total eclipse is a bucket list type of thing. For one uc berkeley professor of astronomy the eclipse will be number 16. He is called an eclipse chaser. Claudine wong talk to him about the eclipse. Watch this professor with the telescope and it is obvious he is in his happy place. I am a junkie. I have seen 15 total eclipses. When he talks about why he chases the eclipse he admits words dont do it justice. A total Solar Eclipse is incredibly mind blowing and awesome. It defies description. You have to be there. He has traveled all over the world chasing that mind blowing experience. Even proposed to his wife on them eclipse trip and has t shirts to mark them. This eclipse has brought him full circle. My first total Solar Eclipse was february 26 my first total Solar Eclipse was february 26, 1979. That was the last total Solar Eclipse to reach the continental us. We have had 38 years and i watched that in oregon and i will watch this one in oregon as well. While each one is different and special this one is remarkable because the long trek overland will allow so many to see it. 12 million americans live within the path of totality and 27 of the population live within 250 miles of the path of totality. It is very accessible. A lot of people can see it and they dont have to travel to the far corners of the world. Viewing can be complicated no matter what the sun and moon do if you dont have clear skies you cant see it. Oregon and idaho are predicted to have the best chance but it will be packed and Oregon Wildfires have already made things challenging closing miles of roads and trails where tens of thousands of people were supposed to review the eclipse. Traffic on eclipse day could be staggering. The roads could be a complete parking lot. While the ground and skies might be unpredictable the eclipse is not. If you cant get to this one there is a silver lining. If you have to miss this one theres another chance in the us april 8 april 8, 2024. Seven years later. Put it on your calendar just make sure you see at least one of them. Most people, when they have seen one they understand what the hype is all about. Not everyone, but most people say wow this is Something Special i did not anticipate this. I saw the photographs but in real life the experience is indescribable. Claudine wong, ktvu fox 2 news. Dont forget we will have complete eclipse coverage on monday morning our coverage begins at 9 00 you will see it here on ktvu fox 2 news. Steve is out in oakland previewing a new restaurant for us in about 15 minutes but he left me in charge of the forecast. Here we go. Fog is likely along the coast there will be some fog over the bay.
