Was here. She has been performing in las vegas. Yes. People are going to see her. Okay. You would be open to a Britney Spears halftime show. Absolutely. I would like to see if she still dances the way she used to. It is a very she is in the best shape of her life. It is a glitzy show. Lets see if she brings that to the biggest stage in the world. Thats it. Im going to vegas. You and me, sal. Lets start with the news of the day as we always do. We will start in the south bay where containment stands at 50 for a brush fire that burned three homes and forced the evacuations of many in the south bay. It started late in the afternoon yesterday in the foothills east of san jose. Rob malcolm is in the neighborhood where residents still have no power. Right, rob. Reporter that is right. Were going to pan from right to left, left to right so you can see the damage in this home. There is still a burned out car inside of the garage. As we pan across the house here, you will see the front of the home that is the kitchen area. You see a sink there. But really this home an entire loss. The fire just ripped through this building as the fire was reported around 4 00 yesterday. At its peak up to 150 personnel from cal and san jose fire were working this blaze. We got an update this morning. The fire crews tell us they made good progress. They have stopped the forward progress of the fire and are now working on the containment. Now, as for the numbers, this fire is now 50 contained, 101 acres burned in total. One home was destroyed and two other homes suffered minor damage. San jose and cal fire crews worked on the ground and also by air dropping retardant and water. They moved they also cut fire lines and tried to move this blaze into open areas. There was difficult terrain and the air drops kept this fire from spreading. The fire also made its way into nearby alan rock park with minimal damage. We heard from the deputy fire chief this morning and a resident who was evacuated from his home. Here is what they had to say. The fire did extend into alan rock park. We did evacuations within alan rock park and the surrounding neighborhoods there. We lifted all of the evacuations and allowed crews to come back in place. The structures in the area that were at right now, the power is still out. The residents have been allowed back in. They evacuated our house right away. The police came over, the fire department. They were great people. They took us down the hill. Then later on we came up and they only let the people who live here come up in this area. Were you feeling nervous at all, not knowing what you would be coming back to . Yes. Yes. I just dont know what my house would look like. So it was nervous. Scary. Reporter that was armando lamos who lives down the road from where were standing. The fire is being investigated but nothing suspicious has been reported. Just the look on the faces of some of the residents in the area as they drove by this home and down this street. Many people just kind of counting their blessings that their homes remained untouched. They look at this house and they say this could have been them. We asked if they had Defensible Space around the house. We talked to one neighborhood and he said we have to take a look at that. And, again, they just said that the fire crews worked quickly and swiftly and smartly and stopped this fire from spreading throughout the neighborhood and damaging plenty more homes on this street. Were live in the san jose foothills, rob malcolm, ktvu fox 2 news. Rob, thank you. We will move now to butte county for an update on a wildfire that burned more than 100 structures there. Containment of the wall fire went up from 55 to 60 overnight. The fire has burned 5800 acres east of oroville. Several thousand people remain evacuated. One resident returned to check on her home. While her house is in tact, she losed one of her prized possessions, one she spent years nurturing. The ones in the orchard are okay. But the other half of the Upper Orchard is gone. And most of the Lower Orchard is gone. Only 40 of her 270 fruit trees survived the fire. An even bigger loss to the familiar legal were three british antique convertibles. They were planning to restore and sell them. A family stopped off at a dennys restaurant and there were firefighters there. Anonymous woman picked up the check for all firefighters. The check was 355. She left 50 tip and another 100 to buy the crew dessert. They thanked the Good Samaritan on the Facebook Page for the quote generous show of support. Thats a great story. You know what, the weather the last few days hasnt been that bad. Steve, last night i went out for a nice walk around sunset. And it was perfect. Did you need a little sweater there, sal. A light jacket. A light jacket. For some they would like to see 80s. Others are like i cant get out of the 60s and 70s. Coast and bay had to deal with a lot of fog and a nice on shore breeze yesterday. Thats kind of the case today even though there is more fog. I think the term crazy hot is all relative now. 100 and under for the inland east bay. Were going woohoo. I wish it was in the 80s. There are signs of a warmup for the weekend. It does not look like it will be 105 or anything like that. Forecast models have backed off a teeny bit. I know what he means. Look at the low clouds. A lot compared to yesterday. Some of that is starting to burn back to the coast. It will stick and stay as we say for a few there. Temperatures even down towards santa cruz which was fog free for a while, theyre dealing with fog. It burns off when they get the sun. West breeze not that strong. Vacaville now has an east breeze. Dont have to worry about thunderstorms in the sierra. It is warm but no thunderstorm activity. Probably 35 to 40 degree spread between those on the coast, 50s and 60s to others inland which will be in the mid90s. It looks a little warmer inland. Maybe not as hot as originally thought, you guys. Steve, thank you. Youre welcome. This afternoon, Oakland Unified School district is holding a job fair. Yeah. Job opportunities include teaching positions, School Support roles and after school programs. Were happy to be joined by mary claire for Oakland Unified Schools. Thanks fork being here. Thank you. The district has been hundreds of teachers of short. What is the situation as it stands right now. Were looking good this year. About two years ago we had about 70 vacancies a week before school opened. Wow. Last year right around this year it was over 100. So going in this school season, we have under 100. And how big of an issue is housing when people come and try to fill the vacancies . Does that come up a lot. Housing is definitely an issue. And what we try to do is we try to connect teachers with others. We have a very Community Oriented city. We try to connect them with opportunities and resources as well as others who can help them in the search. Talk about some of the job positions that youre trying to fill here, some of the biggest roles youre trying to fill and who you believe the ideal candidates are for those jobs. Right. So one of the misconceptions is we only have teaching jobs. Right. When people think schools they think teaching jobs. We have about 7,000 positions in the district. So the major push right now is teachers. Were trying to grow our own talent into all of the positions. Were like a little city. We have a little bit of everything. Were looking for capability willing, coachable, equity based, equity focused, dedicated committed and want to be here for the long haul to bring back the luster of oakland schools being one of the best as it was in the early 1900s. When we think of oakland schools as a whole there is a general belief that the schools in the hills, hillcrest elementary, one shiny example are heads and shoulders above the many schools in east oakland, west oakland where teachers have fury sources, children come from difficult home lives. There has there been any thought to increase the retention rate in the more difficult schools by giving teachers more money for working in a more challenging area . Yeah. So the diversity in the School District is vast. Even with within that description, you can see a lot of diversity in there. There are a lot of conversations happening about how to increase the retention. Within the means that we have that were working with. And then also tapping into other resources either foundations, other state funding. But the elevation schools is what we call them, schools with higher needs and how we can bring schools that have many resources also to collaborate with schools with higher needs. How can we share the resources about ther. Got it. Can i ask you, obviously people who get these jobs will be working around children. Can you talk about what the screening process looks like for the positions . Anything that, you know, potential candidates should keep in mind in terms of something in their past that would preclude them from getting one of these jobs. We have a robust screening process. Application. We have a digital interview. We used to have phone interviews. That allows our 86 principals to view the candidates along with us. We do a background check and look at the employment history. We are looking for people who want to work with children, love children, and want to see a true change happen in the city. When i googled it, the starting salary for Elementary Teachers is 58,000. That doesnt tell the whole story. Right. The focus is the salary range is 50 to 85. We have one of the best benefits package in the area. That is one of the top three reasons that people come to us, in addition to relationships with coworkers and fun things to do in and around oakland in addition to the best families. I would say the oakland families have a deep love for their teachers and their school. All of the information that you need about todays job fair and future job fairs for ousd is weight for you on ktvu. Com. Look for it in the web links section on the mornings on 2 tab and on the mobile app. Coming up, president trumps nominee to become the new fbi director is testifying before congress. What he is saying about loyalty to the administration and the russian possibility of involvement in the election. We talk to the head of the Democratic Party about getting the parties to Work Together and the current battle over health care. I think the relationship between any fbi director and any president needs to be a professional one, not a social one. And there certainly shouldnt be any discussion between one on one discussion between the fbi director and any president about particular how to conduct particular investigations or cases. Happening now, president trumps nominee to become the new fbi director is testifying before the Senate Judiciary committee. In his Opening Statement ray said he would not allow politics to get in the way of the fbis mission saying his work would not be driven by anything other than the law. If confirmed by the senate, ray would replace james comey. President trump this morning is defending his sons decision to meet with a russian attorney with alleged ties to the kremlin during last years election. Federal investigators however may now take the step of examining the dealings of donald trump jr. , including that meeting and the emails that led up to it. Trump jr. Says there was nothing to the meeting in which he was supposed to receive possibly damaging information against hillary clinton. He spoke about the conversation on fox news last night. If there was something that came from it that was shady, if it was a danger to national security, i would obviously bring it right to someone. It turns out it was nothing. Trump jr. Released the e mails with the british publicist after the New York Times announced it plan today publish them. Jared kushner and Paul Manafort were also at the meeting. Mitch mcconnell is canceling the first two weeks of august vacation for senators in an event to get the Gop Health Care bill passed. He says the revised bill will probably keep the Affordable Care act tax increases on wealthier americans to help pay for coverage for the elderly and low income americans. Republicans hope to schedule a vote on the revised bill as soon as next week. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is critical of president trumps First Six Months in office. Ken wayne sat down with pelosi to talk about the president s impacts here in california. The intruck fra intratruck infrastructure, were hoping to work with them, reduce the corporate rate, closing special interest loopholes, having a fair tax and more traction parent tax transparent tax code and the middle class tax cut. Everything that we have seen with the president has been about tax cuts for the rich. In fact, affecting california directly is the Affordable Care act. President bush has come out against that as you know. And he has and it is not even the Health Care Bill. The republican bill is not even a Health Care Bill. It is a tax bill disguise as a Health Care Bill and wrecking terrible damage on california because it attacks covered california which is so successful. He hasnt been our friend in california on that. Watch the full interview on ktvu. Com. There you will find out more on what she expects from the Trump Presidency over the coming years. Were happy to be joined by the chairman of the democratic committee, eric bowman was elected this past may. Thank you for joining us. Thank you for having me. We will begin with nancy pelosi. Some call her too progress and i have out of touch. She said she just wants democrats to win the house. Do you support congressman Congress Woman pelosi. I think she has shown true leadership. She has stood up and fought for policies that help working men and women all across america. She has fought for those in the cities and those outside of the cities. I think she is doing a terrific job. We just have to get our election apparatus into gear and take back the house of representatives so once again she can actually have the gavel. So you support her staying . I do. Okay. Lets move on to health care. I know youre a registered nurse. Has the latest slight shift in the Republicans Health care plan done anything to bring it closer to what California Democrats accept. I dont think it has moved closer to what americans accept. 22Million People will lose health care. In exchange for 22 Million People losing their health care, rich people will get tax cuts. Thats a ridiculous policy. What we have tried to do over the last six years has been to make sure that almost everybody in america has health care and that is what the Affordable Care act brought. And now theyre trying to strip it out in order to meet a political pledge. That is just absolutely nonsense. Would you agree with the rising premiums and other issues that we have seen in recent months the Affordable Care act is not sustainable . Ble . Well, look, you know, the myths about this is premiums werent rising before this. Premiums were rising at nearly double the speed before this. So we have to be honest when we have this discussion about what is really going on with premiums. But here is the difference today, people can go to a doctor. They can go to a hospital. They can get health care. And that is what is incredibly important. And the reason that were seeing right now instability in the Health Care Marketplace is caused by what the republicans are doing and what trump is doing. Theyre dillydallying, they will not say whether they will continue to renew the program. So therefore the market is unsteady. Lets move to donald trump jr. And the emailed with the russian lawyer. Some are calling for donald trump jr. And Paul Manafort to testify before congress. Is that something that youre calling for. That is the very least im calling for. Quite frankly there was a lot of talk about emails. It turns out that these emails validate the thoughts that we have all had that trump and his people were in collusion with the russians. Very clearly his son, his Campaign Manager and his sonin law went to meet with a russian agent, a lawyer who was associated with the kremlin, in order to get dirt on hillary clinton. I think that speaks for itself. I think the American People deserve to know the truth. Quite frankly i think somebody needs to be put on trial over this. Do you think a law was broken . Right now that has not been determined. Im not a lawyer. I cant speak o that. For the first time yesterday i started hearing people throw around words in washington that refer to breaking laws. Opinion just democrats but not just democrats but republicans. Republicans were downright startled. They couldnt defend this or explain this away. Lets talk about your own party here. Is it time for democrats to move beyond the resist movement . Movement . Well, look, the resist movement is a is very important for us. Number one, california is the one place that can stand up to trump and his ill thought out policies and do it loudly and send a message across the country. Number two, the resist Movement Helps us organize and right now what were doing is building community, were engaging and Building Partnerships in an effort to make sure that we have the strongest possible game in 2018. Because you know the path for us taking back the house of representatives starts here in california. As you know, there are 7 Republican Co
