active took as many steps maybe i can loosen up on my diet to the unintentionally harmed their intention for weight loss. >> burnout. >> let's also talk about coffee. we all rely on this. you said there are some health benefits to coffee. >> there are more studies that are coming out that show a direct link between coffee drinking and multiple health benefits. a couple highlights that he is were showing the coffee drinkers have about a 25% decrease risk of colorectal cancer cancer and a 50% decrease risk of carcinoma a common type of liver cancer. >> i'm a coffee drinker. is there such a thing as too much coffee that will benefit your health. >> that's not entirely clear but most experts agree that anywhere up two about 400 milligrams which translates to roughly three to four cups of coffee a day is considered safe for almost everybody. >> you also have to consider what you put in your coffee could you could negate health benefits if you let up with sugar and have a kennametal maki auto everyday. >> i don't think any doctor will recommend deli caramel maki otto. i know we shouldn't should add sugar to anything including coffee. >> let's talk about alcohol. some people say i drink red wine from a for my health other say i don't drink because of my health. >> this is a hot topic right now because in the past there have been hundreds of studies showing that people who drink in moderation may have better health and even live longer the people don't at all. but a 2016 study looked more closely at 87 of these prior studies and they found that they were all committing a classic era that introduced bias into the results and overestimated the health benefits of drinking in moderation. >> what was error. >> it is interesting. they compared nondrinkers at the moderate drinkers. in the group of nondrinkers you had two very different types of people. the people who were lifelong abstainers we chose for whatever reason to not drink alcohol and also people who were former drinkers and stopped drinking because of alcoholism or medical conditions. when you compare that group of people to people who were healthy enough to enjoy alcohol in moderation of course the moderate drinkers are going to appear to live longer and have more mortality and be healthier overall. >> jury is still out. i wouldn't recommend anyone start drinking for the help we do know people who drink in moderation which is at most two drinks a day for men and one drink a day for women they tend to be just as healthy as nondrinkers and there is really no evidence that you would put yourself in increased risk for any sort of medical issue. >> i like red wine and chocolate. chocolate is okay right were good. >> yes this is my favorite story because more and more studies are showing chocolate may not be a junk food like likely thought. it may be health promoting. >> a vegetable. >> i don't know about that far. the highlight study of 2016 was about a thousand people researchers ask them how much chocolate do you eat on a daily basis and 80% of people said they ate chocolate very regularly and of the people that did they have lower levels of insulin resistance which is the hallmark of type ii diabetes. and they also tend to have better liver health. they had a lower liver enzymes in their blood the people who did me chocolate. >> dark chocolate milk chocolate is a make a difference. >> deftly dark chocolate. it's higher in natural cocoa which we think is high in antioxidants and also it has less added sugar and fats than milk chocolate. >> happy new year. coming up next as it gets colder concerns grow for those who live out there on the street. how to keep the homeless warm. here's your receipt. have a nice day! thank you. start the car! start the car! start the car! start the car! the ikea winter sale. wooooooo! get up to 50% off select items. now through january 10th. ikea in 30 minutes we are expecting more details about the decision to fire 40 niners head coach chip kelly in general manager trent bulky. january will hold a news conference at levi stadium in santa clara. the decision was expected given that the team had a two and 14 loosen reason and were beaten yesterday 25 -- 23 by division rivals metal seahawks in their final game of the season. i'm joined now with our sports anger jason applebaum. already a lot of activity. >> it's like groundhog day. four coaches and four years. >> levi stadium get a new coach every year. >> this is a bizarre scene going on. you mentioned the coaching search yes adjustment the end of the offense of coordinator for the new england patriots they are 14 and two have a bye in the 40 niners of already received jet. that interview with him. he may be at the top of their list. 's innovative guy and he's been a head coach once for the denver broncos. a short stint there. he's got high praise from tom brady who says he fully expects to lose them to some team. there's gonna good to be about ten head-coaching vacancies in nfl and he's can be very sought after. so whether the 40 niners and all the turnover they have the top with a head coach and how january likes it was business these days is you get to be the guy we shall see. >> that's my beef. you to talk with the competition already. it seems like once again. has made this decision may be a little too late. especially the gm roll. when i do it earlier if you do it. >> you mention the gm role and i think here's what most teams are doing. >> you can't put the season on chip kelly. two and 14 at 13 game losing streak you can put all chip kelly. they didn't have a good roster as we know. you can't put it on him. the 40 niners the way they do things the way jet. does things and dealing with the symptom of the root of the problem. i think most folks think that he should hire a football guy and get out of the way. he did that with trent for a while but now i'm hearing because doc mcdaniel the window of opportunity in interviewing him and getting him is very big and some of the other coaches and he may hire a head coach before you hire the general manager that is not out of the realm of possibility. >> that doesn't seem like ten york would do that. >> it expands the local media and the team i think they think you need to hire a football got to take over and move away. maybe even bring back any his uncle. the raiders talk to john madden before they hired their general manager and then he hired doctor rio and that all has fallen the place for them. i think until he goes with that model most things will be the same around here. >> they go super bowl in the championship and eight and eight. they had to parboil. it wasn't just the firing of harvel it was what he said when he fired him which was we don't raise division batters we raised championship banners and everybody went come on. we know you guys didn't do long maybe it was a battle between trent bulky and hard about what bulky. if he would settle us and it's a personality conflict is a great coach for the part ways i think people would have respect that decision more. but the way he said it was he wasn't willing enough. nobody bought that because he was 44 and 19 in his tenure and since then the con seven and 25. >> who is more important of these two hires. >> i think it is a general manager. i think you have a structure in place of the top. i think jelly. it needs to hire a good football guy he needs to consult with somebody knows football and then bring in the general manager. as of right now jelly york at the right hand man the most fans and media don't think that they know an awful lot about football. so if they are the guys hired the guy that's going to hire them that the problem. i think the best way for them to go about it is for them to hire a football guy ohio the general manager of the be respected and no football in the step aside. this thing has a long way to go. it is strange because less than a year ago they were hiring chip kelly and jed york said he's can be here for a long time. he's the ceo of the team is making decisions right now. you may stumble on a great coach for general manager. i think that's how most fans and media perceive it right now is that if he does hire somebody like to harvel before stumbling on somebody. police in santa rosa investigating a deadly crash. one person inside the car was killed another was critically hurt. investigators say alcohol may have been a factor in this crash. the monterey county sheriff's office still searching for a young couple from southern california did not come back from of weekend trip to big sur. the 20-year-old and 21-year-old left north hollywood december 23rd. they were supposed to come back home to big sur christmas day but they never did. family members hope someone has seen something. a driver shot an officer as the officer walked back into a patrol car to write the ticket. they see the said reminder that no traffic is a routine traffic. >> anytime he posted by the over and in this case the already made contact with the person he pulled over to walk back to the vehicle. it's inherently dangerous a table somebody over. >> that will do police officer is still in the hot it all in critical condition. oh, police are searching statewide for the gunman. those are just some of the morning headlines in our newsroom. the cold wet weather in the bay area has concerns of people living on the street. homeless advocates are keeping busy this week to protect the home was from the rain and cold. they are handing out blankets and close to those in need. >> in the last year there has been hundred 25 deaths in santa clara county and that is out of more than 5,000 people living on the street. that is an alarmist to stick. that is one of the highest in the nation. >> homeless advocates hope 2017 will be the year they reverse the rising number of deaths among people living on the street. new year's day marked eight years since the death of oscar grant. an unarmed african-american man who was shot and killed by a white police officer in oakland. 's death of his death sparked a national discussion on race and policing. we were at a vigil for grand and we spoke to his mother about the lessons learned since his death. >> this cell phone video taken at the station eight years ago we played replay on multiple news outlets across the country. 22-year-old oscar grant was laying on his stomach. he was handcuffed behind his back and he was shot by a police officer who said he accidentally pulled out his gun and set of his taser. eight years since his death grants family friends and community not only remember his life but also discuss the impact of his death. >> i want people to know oscar loves people and he would want to see justice equally and people treated equally and fairly. this performer was only seven when grant was shot and killed. >> everybody you could hear them say freedom and it gives us encouragement to do better. >> grants mother said she credits the community activism for getting the da to press murder charges against the officer. he was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in his death. >> that is why it's so important for us to have vigils every year and so important for us to remind the community to come together and unify. we say takes a village to raise a child so it takes a community to come together to ensure equal rights are passed from one generation to another generation. >> for a younger generation today they have both fear and hope for 2017. >> i am afraid it will be more of the same but i am hoping for change and hoping we can get rid of racism. i know it will happen in one year but i hope we can help bring it out. >> since 2010 oscar grant's mother and uncle have run the oscar grant foundation. the federation says it works to bridge the gap of distrust between the community and the police force. if you ride muni expect to pay more. the pass goes up and $86 up to $91 a month. discount monthly passes also increase. the cashmere also went up a quarter. the discount cashmere who parked illegally for spaces that require special permits. that is $75 which is to be $40. ten or more tickets and it will cost you an extra $150. coming up next a mandatory disconnect during the holidays. the new law in france says american companies could make note of. also what are the most common new year's resolutions to keep and which are the easiest to break. next are keeping you on track with our life coach. we did not make a resolution this year but we are continuing from last year and that is to stay away from soda pop. simple but healthy. >> quitting smoking after 40 years. just started on the nicotine patch. a great job. i haven't had a copenhagen for 12 years. i like that quitting smoking and tobacco. >> i'm also seeing a lot of health-related things. also one i love them. who tweets one year's resolution is to finish my schooling to become a professional jeweler. she is a beater and she had a couple of pictures of necklaces and. professional development. i like that. are working to make ourselves better. the problem is we do tend to make the same resolution over and over again every year. we want to help you keep them and for that were gonna bring in our life coach we talk to every now and again. >> this is my favorite topic ever. we do tend to make the same promises every year which means we want to know if new year's resolutions work. >> you make them attainable. quitting smoking is difficult just as a gentleman time ten. smaller ones i think are attainable. >> that the key difference in how people are successful. earlier being pacific makes a big difference operationalizing what this new behavior is and how you can integrate it in small ways in life. rather than it being motivation itself control. it's easy because you have navigated from day-to-day. he put the shoes by the door you call a friend in your meeting never exercise. you do a little changes. you hit had the bump in the road and then you forget it. you get sick you working out. how to keep the motivation going in the energy level going. that's the reason i don't do new year's resolutions. i find once a year doesn't feel new anymore i lose interest and then i feel like have to wait until the next year to start over again. how to avoid that. >> we need to plan for the failure. we're going to fail it's a change in behavior. we need to plan for that setback and have a restart strategy. that could include voting a friend and saying any support or help me at the gym text me make sure i follow through and also having self compassion. of course of this is different. >> having compassion and then having the restart strategy. >> i used to do a lot of i'm never going to eat i'm get good to work in our every day. i kept it small and manageable and instead of saying and i can eat french fries i said i'm going to eat more healthy fruits and vegetables making a positive instead of i'm not going to allow myself to xyz. that helps it's focusing on the positive behavior and it's the little successes over time. there's also a risk we have that is proven and the research says it's called what the hell fact if you have one item that you're saying you're not can have like french fries then you go crazy that you wanted. it proven behavior you're going to be more candy your party blown at your can have the whole box. >> you need to plan for that what the hell affect and have the backup. tomorrow is a new day. we want to know what the new behavior you will create. >> all is not lost. >> know that's where our brain goes. we give it all up in the one moment. but you could restart the next day. >> what resolution do people keep. >> ones that are smaller and operationalized. one that build momentum. clearing clutter for men and women creating a new look rather than trying to lose 40 pounds they try to create a new look. new haircut new clothes for starting an exercise program but not losing 40 pounds. and if you want to try to break a bad habit i read somewhere you have to do something a certain number of times in order to break your old habit. how often do you have to keep that going. old habits die hard. >> there is a study out there that has to be 21 days. that study is not applicable. that does not apply. if you look at the research if you look at six month generally are able to integrate the new behavior if you sustained it for six months. and the reason that new year's resolutions are exciting is because we are half as likely to succeed at that ask month mark because we've with declared it to the world with shared it with people would often got support or accountability partners. that's it makes a difference. if you don't start doing it during new year's are only 4% likely to keep doing it. you're reflecting on your year and thinking okay what do i want to learn from last year but i want to be how can i be different and you integrate that. >> if you do get the june or july and are still on that path you can build something you never saw. >> you're building momentum a whole new thing creating a new look maybe running marathons come july because you started with creating a new look and now you really got more exercise in and you wanted something bigger. that such a great point. were already creating something new. >> did you make one. >> yes lester was meditating and i did good. i told your audience and it helped me accountable. >> and paying off my debt i like that one. >> i can operationalize that one. it to be automatic. because my business i haven't thought about it. >> breanna hatcher you always inspire us. it is a joy to see you. happy new year. we will be right back after the break. here's your receipt. have a nice day! thank you. start the car! start the car! start the car! start the car!
