A number of fierce battles with the president ial nominee donald trump along the campaign trail. Also, this will be the first major address for Donald Trumps Vice President ial pick mike pence. Lets go ahead and launch into the big story of the day. Of course, donald trump officially the republican president ial candidate. He was nominated last night at the Republican National convention. And tonight Vice President ial nominee mike pence is scheduled to speak along with former trump rivals senators marco rubio and ted cruz. Caroline shively has more from cleveland. Reporter good morning, guys. It will be very interesting to hear from mike pence. The vp pick who brings a lot of conservative credentials with him. He is the indiana governor. He is the headliner tonight. He is a fiscal conservative. He is a social conservative. And what trump is hoping do tonight is introduce him to the rest of the world. Well known to washington insiders as well as his home state of indiana, but a lot of people are googling, who is mike pence . So an important event today. We are also straight across, two hours from now there is a friends and family rally that the pence family and trump family will be having today. Most nominees kind of hide out during Convention Week for the big explosion on that thursday night event. Trump will be landing that helicopter in the field ahead of us behind the camera. You mentioned a small handful of people, protesters arrested so far . Reporter yeah. Big surprise. I mean, we have thousands of Police Officers dedicated just for the convention, not to mention the rest of cleveland. A total of five arrests so far. They have cleared the court dockets. They have cleared the jails. They said that they could process maybe a thousand people a day if need be. So far, we havent seen this. Interesting to talk to the cleveland police. They were just talking about how their bike officers have been so important in this. They get in between if they think two people are going to get together and have a fight. They come in with their bikes, sort of cull the herd. Its interesting how well that they have been handling this. You know, we have two more days to go. We are told thursday will be some of the bigger protests. But so far, very calm. Reporter Caroline Shively live in cleveland. Thank you. Indiana governor Vladimir Putinle nominee mike pence will take the stage tonight. Google has been keeping tabs. When it comes to pence, the top five things people want to know based on their searches. Is mike pence a marine, what does he look like, how tall is he, is he catholic, and what state is he from . Were talking with a google trends expert in ten minutes and the other top searches people are making. As day three gets underway we are joined by university of San Francisco professor keely mcglide. Professor, any surprises in your mind, what you were expecting would happen at the convention and what has happened . Lets see. I mean, i think everyone was surprised last night by how well trumps children did in addressing the audience. Tiffany, i think, brought that kind of warm fuzzy more personal view of her father that everyone has been waiting to hear. So that was somewhat of a surprise. I think one of the other surprises that were seeing is that were seeing very strong party unity around dislike of clinton. Right . I mean, thats a very, very consistent theme. I think people were looking for more of a highlight of exactly what trumps proposals were going to be. But one of the things i noted in watching yesterdays speeches is that the crowd got very, very rallied up when we had Chris Christie talk. He staged a mock trial of Hillary Clinton and the crowd went wild. The theme of the night was make america work again. You could argue the theme of the night was lets go after Hillary Clinton. You talk about that speech regarding Chris Christie. You know, i think it was the guilty or not guilty speech is what he did. Do you find that speech effective . Here we are talking about the morning after. I think it was effective in the Convention Center, right . And i think it was effective for those watching at home as a reminder of all the things that they dont like about Hillary Clinton. Libya. China. Syria. Iran. Russia. Cuba. And then her private email server. I feel like the pressure is on mike pence tonight. Here you have christie, who could have been the Vice President. Whats pence going to bring to the table tonight . I think he brings a more institutional version of politics. This is what im going to be interested to see, right . Because paul ryan stood up and gave a kind of this is a vision of whats happening with the republican party. This is what we do. We had that kind of bruising primary season, but thats good. That shows that we are a party of ideas and innovation. And basically most people in the Convention Center seemed kind of bored and not interested in what he was saying until the very end when he started saying, lets unify, lets go out and win this thing, and then people got excited. So i think pence is in a difficult position because he needs to appear the elder statesman, but the crowd and the Convention Center are really much more interested in more inflammatory rhetoric. Donald trump promised some surprises before the convention started. Have we seen any . Well, arguably, you could say melanias speech was a surprise. But thats not something he was promising. It seems like he has something hidden. We have two more nights. And one of the conservative commentators, bill crystal, who doesnt like donald trump, said, you know, i think that all people remember is the nominees speech. So if he hits it out of the park somehow with that speech, which he might. He has good speech writers. He can appeal to the base. That will put him over the top when it comes to a successful convention, correct . Well, a convention conventions are odd things, right . In some sense, they are massive Television Events and big advertisements. But in the other sense its a signal to the party itself. Its a moment where the Party Organization really coalesces. You fire up everyone who is going to be knocking on doors. Its unclear whether the convention will be successful in that much more traditional sense. But, of course, donald trump has run a very successful Unconventional Campaign where he is able to get people to vote for him in ways you know, all of the political pundits said he could never do it, and somehow he keeps breaking the template over and over. Moving on from politics to news in the bay area, a Major Development to a story we have been following all morning long. Oakland police stormed in a building where at least one person was believed to be barricaded. That standoff has been going on for hours. Lets go back to ktvus alex savidge with new video and information about the standoff. Alex. Reporter good morning you to guys. The standoff all stemmed from a shooting that happened early this morning inside a building here at east 12th street and 15th avenue. Witnesses tell us this particular building housed some sort of an illegal gaming operation that has not been confirmed by police. This is video we shot within the last few minutes, and it shows as the Oakland Police department s. W. A. T. Team made entry inside this building at 1530 east 12th street. A sort of warehouse storefront building here. Again this situation began 3 00 this morning with a shooting. One person was shot and wounded inside that building. We also watched through the morning as this standoff unfolded here as a number of people, at least a dozen people were brought out of this building with their hands up. We know the Oakland Police department has taken one person into custody, and i want to bring in officer Marco Marquez with the Oakland Police department for an update on where we stand now. We saw the s. W. A. T. Team go inside this building. What are they doing right now inside there . So, first, we want to make sure that the scene is secured and that it is safe. So right now we have the Hostage Negotiation Team as well as our Tactical Operation Team on scene working diligently with a lot of resources to make sure that we can resolve this safely. Reporter essentially, you are trying to make sure there is nobody else inside that building . Yes, absolutely. We want to make sure that the immediate area is safe and cleared as well as the inside of the building is safe and clear, whether that be witnesses or residents or people involved or even suspects. Reporter and this is still, i know, a very active scene. Do you have any sense of what may have prompted the initial shooting . This is an active scene. With an active scene, we are gathering information. We cant specifically pinpoint what the cause or reason for this incident happened. But, you know, as we clear and we find out more information, we will figure that out. Reporter and lastly here, we have a number of people who live in this neighborhood who are telling us in fact, someone who lives in that building tells us that there was some sort of illegal gaming operation happening in there. Slot machines and a quite a bit of people there this morning. Again, that is information we cant confirm or deny. Its something we will look into. You know, we have been tracking all week here in cleveland. We have been looking at not just the issues, but the questions that people are asking about donald trump and some of the speakers that they have been searching for. When we look in california specifically, we looked at the top issues and its been really mirroring what has been happening in the united states. Gun control and isis. Again, what has been happening in the country and also in the news cycle. Latoya, after Melania Trumps speech we saw that hashtag pop up and stay on twitter. What is google finding in relation to what was the most talked about moment from the first day . Yes. So right after melania, that moment spiked. We saw a spike. Melania trump, Michelle Obama. So people were already starting to associate, you know, the two speeches together. They were digging for it a little bit more. Beyond that, people were asking more general questions about melania, wanting to know where she was from, for instance. There was that moment around the speech, around where she is from, and also a little bit of a fashion moment. The dress that she wore. All right. Latoya drake from google. Political search trends expert. And in light of recent scandals involving the Oakland Police department, the city is considering an independent Police Commission that would have broad powers to oversee the department and fire the chief. This comes as tensions between the community and Police Officers all over the country remain high after the shooting deaths of two unarmed black men in minnesota and louisiana and eight Police Officers in dallas and baton rouge. This morning we are joined again by pastor ben mcbride of oaklands first congregational church. I know you work deeply with the Oakland Police department. Injury thoughts on this Oversight Commission . We think its an important move in a sense of where the relationship has been and where it needs to go. I think because of the storied challenges with the department and community, getting to a place where the community actually has oversight with some power with respect to the Police Department is going to be a necessary step to move forward. Who do you think appoints the commission . We think it needs to come from a variety of different vantage points that bring people in. The mayor could have influence. We also think Community Groups that also are influencing who is actually on this commission that ensures there is a broad representation and shared voice that is can bring some direction. Can you seen the Police Commission at work in San Francisco . And if so, have you paid attention, what do you think of the way that Commission Works . I think some of the challenges with the San Francisco commission, and i know a couple of the folks around it, is that the commission does not have the power to still bring about some of the actions that it wants to call for. So oftentimes is creates a context where the community enters a space that the commission does not have the power to provide. The Oakland Commission proposal actually puts in the hands of the citizenry the power to fire the police chief and to make the final decisions around Police Misconduct which creates a duel share of power with relationship with the mayor and the city of oakland, which allows the people to actually have some influence on the kind of Public Safety apparatus is existing in their communities. As you talk with people in the oakland community, members of your congregation and others, how are they reacting to the most recent police shooting, three officers gunned down . I think people are very impacted in very deep ways. I was against that sunday when we were there, one of the woman as they passed the mic around during prayer time said i am afraid to be the color of my skin and she began to weep and others joined in the weeping. These shootings have impacted people in very deep ways. When i have done the training with Police Departments over the last couple of years i said that until we know the names of irvin romans and john hague and until we know their names and we equally know the names of walter scott, alton sterling and philando castile, were really not having a conversation around how do we all see our lives as valuable and important. But equally we need to understand the power dynamic with respect to certain people who have the power of the state to take away your life and freedom. It means there has to be a different kind of accountability and people are experiencing in pain in deep ways. Equally, people in the Law Enforcement community are experiencing pain in different kinds of ways. We have to find out how do we lean forward into processes that create more legitmacy for Public Safety systems to exist in relationships with communities that have justified, you know, history of distress. So our viewers know, those were former Police Officers killed on the same day. What about heat . Last time you talked about heat. How has that been . Interestingly enough, we are going to be launching our Heat Campaign in december of this year. Over the last couple of years myself and a cadre of other leaders have been involved in training our Police Departments in the bay area, particularly around procedure justice, which helps to work on cynicism and address a historical effects of policing. This heat platform is going to be focusing on hiring. How do we ensure that we are bringing in the kinds of officers that are needed for 21st Century Policing versus the antiquated system over the last 50 years . What kind of equipment, tactics and procedures that actually deescalate you are ripping it apart. Absolutely. Accountability. How do we bring in cultural comptency. Pastor, last time you were here you said you said you led people on to the freeway. I am the traffic guy here. I dont know if you know that. But i got so many twitter comments about that, people saying this is not the way to protest. You were blocking me. I had to turn on twitter, i got so many of those. What do you say to those people who may have been supporting your movement, but were blocked on the way to work, on the way to school, on the way to the hospital . Absolutely. You know, i probably havent gotten as nice of comments. I understand peoples frustration. I understand the vitriol that people have. We are calling people to realize that the kind of disruption that is brought forth through protests that actually garners peoples attention is necessary, many of us believe, to invite us to have a conversation that sometimes, because we are so busy just being connected to the lifestyles we are living, we dont feel like we have the margin to have. So while we appreciate the frustration and diversity of different opinions, we recognize our commitment to continue to use direct action. Is it better to see you on the interstate with the protests. This week we have been showing video of teenagers in oakland playing basketball with some of the housing officers. So its almost two different sides. Which would you rather see . Or both . I think we need both. When i was involved in the last two years of training officers, there wasnt a lot of race consciousness around that. There wont a lot of Media Coverage around that. The people upset about the freeways wasnt engaged in that work. It wasnt until we went to the freeways people became a little bit more aware of the strategy. Unfortunately, in our busy society it oftentimes seem we dont Pay Attention until we are forced to Pay Attention. Would you do it again . I dont long to wake up every morning to find my way to the freeway. I am more committed to ensure that we give a total transformation of the Public Safety system that is good for Community Members and Police Officers of whom i have family who are officers as well. This time in kansas. 46yearold captain Robert Melton was searching for suspects in an earlier driveby shooting, confronted one of them, shots were fired before he could get out of his car. A Funeral Service will be held on friday. A visitation for officer Montrell Jackson will be held friday morning with a Funeral Service on monday. Services for east baton rouge sheriffs Deputy Brad Garafola have not yet been announced. In light of the recent police shootings, president obama wrote an open letter to Law Enforcement telling officers, quote, we have your backs. The president acknowledged a tough job that officers do every day and commended them on their work, saying now is the time for the country to ban tonight. The president said some of trying to use this moment to divide police and the communities you serve. I reject those efforts. A san diego 911 dispatcher is heading to baton rouge today. She volunteers her time and spends her own money to cover shifts for dispatchers who have been on duty in cities where tragedies have happened. She says some of the dispatchers she will work for in baton rouge knew the six officers shot last sunday, three of whom died. Earlier this week she returned from dallas where she filled in for emotionally drained dispatchers who worked with the five Police Officers shot and killed in that city. Dispatchers are often forgotten, you know, because we are always here ready to take the call. Every dispatcher has been through a line of duty death, so they know what emotions that dispatchers those dispatchers might be going through and we can help them process that. Miller says she steps in to bring relief to people who do a difficult job. She is grateful she can make a difference for them. Take a look at this Surveillance Video showing a man in dark clothing and a hot running near monterey road and 3rd street saturday night about 11 15. Police say he had just fired nine rounds into parked areas in that area. No one was hurt. Now, Police Describe the suspect as a white man about 510 wearing a black baseball cap, dark sweatshirt, redshirt, and dark pants and white shoes. If you have any information about him call morgan hill police. Well, some of the people who were burned out of their homes by this huge fire in emeryville two weeks ago say now they have been hit by looters. The fire started at an Apartment Building under construction on san pablo avenue and spread to ten townhomes at the City Crossing complex. People there say they were forced to leave their belongings behind without proper security there. Neighbors say vandals were seen breaking into some of the units right after the police left the area. The driver swerved into a Baltimore Police cruiser. Police approached, asked if he is okay and he showed the officers his cell phone, which had pokemon go up on the screen, and said thats what i get for playing the dumb game. Nobodys hurt here. Police wont say yet if this guy will be facing any charges. She is raising money for the families of the three Police Officers killed in baton rouge, louisiana. She put up a sign that said police free. Others donations. Police officers say they are touched by the gesture and from such a young girl. Her stand has raised more than 1,300. A waitress in missouri with a big thank you for two Police Officers. She was at the end of a long shift when two women walked out without paying their bill. Two Police Officers stopped her to find out what the problem was. They looked for the women.
