If you watch the ad in its entirety, the person that comes on camera after this in a mug shot is percy walton, a man convicted of triple murder when kaine was governor and whose Death Penalty was commuted by kaine. That was his judgment. The Death Penalty to life in prison. The ad, the tone in the background, even the far tores voice is reminiscent of an ad call a Willie Horton ad run in the 1988 campaign against in the Bush Campaign. He was accused of a prison furlough program, a federal court had implemented and forced on his predecessor by the way who was a republican. He was just carrying out the court order that allowed prisoners to go out on weekends to visit families to get used to living in a community again. Unfortunately in one of the situations, a man named william horton, his name was never willie, the ad called him that because it sounded like a slave name. He escaped and raped the wife and killed the husband. The victims were white. Mr. Horton was african american. The ad was denounced as racist but had a huge impact on the campaign. This ad is similar to that. Coming on the eve of the debate was designed to raise questions under the guise of under criminal justice and the righteousness of the Death Penalty it injects race back into the campaign that will not be positive. Youre saying that the ad features a criminal who happens to be africanamerican and thats what jumped out at you. If you go back, you can find this on youtube. It is called the turnstill ad, the original ad. The construction is similar to what youre watching here. Africanamerican voters and most people in 1988 were revolted by what they saw in that. The city of San Bernardino is temporarily closed its city hall after getting a washing there could be an earthquake in Southern California in the next few days. A notice about the closure was posted on the front door of the city Hall Building yesterday. A warning about a possible earthquake came after there were more than 140 small tremors last week. Some people say the decision to close city hall was an overreaction but San Bernardino city manager says its a precaution. Look at 280 here. 280 is very slow through 680, getting up all the way into cupertino. Thats not the only one. 85 and 101 are slow as well. Lets move to the bridge where we had problems there. We had earlier issues. That is a little better than it was. Just the whole commute, san mateo bridge, an accident. And 880 is jam packed. Lets go to the bay bridge toll plaza. If we can take a look at that. Traffic is going to be busy there at the toll plaza as you get there. It is backed up for a 25 to 30 minute delay. This is not be as bad as yesterday. Yesterday the rain made things slow. But it is pretty slow. A new Study Confirms<\/a> what many drivers have suspected. Traffic around the bay area is indeed worse. For more on that, lets go to alex savage who is live in berkeley with the commute that is really slow. Reporter sal, good morning to you. Certainly it is not your imagination. Things have bogged down in a big way on bay area roads in the last few years. It turns out the time we all spend sitting in slow traffic is up 70 . If you can believe that. Since 2010. Thats according to new figures out from the metropolitan transportation commission. A live look above the east shore freeway. You dont want to be in that mess. This commute, westbound in the morning along 80 between hercules and San Francisco<\/a> is the second worst commute. Just the second worst commute in the entire bay area. The top honor, if you want to call it that, is the evening ride outside of San Francisco<\/a> heading east towards the bay bridge along 80 and 101 in the city. Then the interstate 80 commute holding down the number two spot. Then the third worst commute in the entire bay area is the morning drive from 680 from about san jose to cupertino. And in fourth place on that list, the evening commute along southbound 101 from sunnyvale to south san jose. Drivers we spoke to this morning say they are heading out the door earlier and earlier trying to beat the rush. If you leave early enough, youre okay. If you leave at 6 00, youre bad. Thats why youre leaving im trying to get out of here. Were holding you up. A minute or two wont hurt me. Thats why you do the ride early. Yeah. Leave at least 30 to 15 minutes early in order to beat the traffic. Now, researchers involved in the study say growth in the bay area and the improved job market are some of the factors at play here. And part of the reason that traffic is getting worse. More and more commuters hitting the road. There are no such Things Considered<\/a> rush hour. The morning commute extends further into the day. The evening commute begins earlier and earlier and extends later into the evening in fact. And along the east shore freeway, according to this study, there is no longer any sort of hisdaybreak, gasia. You used to be able to hit the east bay freeway at 11 00 or noon and might have a chance. According to thed study, the east shore interstate 80 congested pretty much the entire day from early in the morning to late in the evening. Yep. All right. Thank you so much, alex. Police are now saying that an Armed Robbery<\/a> we reported on last week that left two people injured may be connected to a series of other robberies in contra costa county. Communicating with each other to see if the crimes in fact are linked. Reporter well, gasia, were talking about six armed robberies during a fourday period last week throughout contra costa county. In each, the robbers confronted the victims in the driveway of their own home or in one case in the victims garage. Here is a map showing where the crimes happened. The Armed Robbery<\/a> in orinda received the most attention because it was the only incident where someone was shot. The carol brown was the victim. She was shot. Her husband was pistol whipped during the robbery. Both are expected to recover. When they pulled into the driveway of their own home, they were attacked by three Armed Robbers<\/a>. Now, people who live in the area say this type of brazen crime is not what they expect to happen in the community. The violence. People want to feel like theyre safe in their community. When somebody gets pistol whipped and somebody is shot a couple of times, especially someone who is giving back to the Community Like<\/a> a school board member, that is a cause for concern. Reporter the police chief says its unclear what connection these crimes have or there may not be a connection at all. They are looking into it. The similarity between the cases, quote, certainly has not gone unnoticed and communication between our agencies, talking about the various Police Agencies<\/a> looking into it, absolutely has taken place. Now, another similarity in some of the robberies is the type of vehicle used. A lot of the victims at least in three cases reported to police that the three Armed Robbers<\/a> got away in a white sedan. These are questions that we have for the police chief. Overnight you angry protests in the streets in los angeles in response to two Deadly Police<\/a> shootings over the evening. This tied up traffic south of downtown. Demonstrators were mostly peaceful. No arrests were made. Now, in response to the protests, the lapd released images of the replica gun and the actual recovered at the two shooting scenes. Look at the images. One of the men allegedly pointed this gun at police. Officials say the fake handgun did not have the usual plastic orange tip used to identify a fake gun. Police also released this image of a loaded handgun. They say the 18yearold man pointed it at Police Officers<\/a> before he was shot and killed. Both of the shootings remain under investigation. Theyre coming from this ranch land right across the street. A few years ago, neighbors reinforced a fence with barbed wires but think that the pigs found a hole. People working at a Sandwich Shop<\/a> in san jose got quite a scare after a car crashed into their building. This happened just after 6 00 this morning in a strip mall. Jeanine is there now. Jeanine, did you talk to the owner of that shop. Reporter yeah. I did. She said that the employees didnt even know what hit them. They thought it was an earthquake because they heard a loud boom. You can actually see into the other shop next door. Now, here is what it looked like shortly after the crash happened in the strip mall here on story road near mclaughlin. The driver of the honda accord said hes was parking in front of lees sandwiches but accidentally pushed on the gas instead of the brake. The car plowed through the doors and the wall that i showed you. Employees were inside but no customers yet. Fortunately no one was injured. We did speak to the brandnew owner of the Sandwich Shop<\/a> who is pretty understanding. No. Im not upset. I feel sorry for him. What happened is not thats not what he wants. So i told him dont worry. The insurance will take care of it. It has happened to me. This is the fourth time that it has happened. Not at this location but other locations. It has happened twice. Yeah. Reporter the owner owns another lees sandwiches on mckee avenue and cars have come crashing into it twice before. They put up a pole to prevent that from happening now. Now the owner is going to ask the landlord to do the same thing at this location. We did ask police if the driver was under the influence of any alcohol or drugs and they said no. It just appears to have been an accident. But both of these businesses here, lees sandwiches as well as another vietnamese Sandwich Shop<\/a> next door looks like they are saying open. They cleaned up fast and customers are coming in and they have put up plywood and theyre going to have repairs done as soon as possible. They are still both open for business. Fortunately i understand it. Trump said that he legally used tax laws to his benefit. His campaign issued a statement saying that the documents sent anonymously to the times were illegally obtained. Hillary clinton also talked about donald trump not paying federal income tax. In a Campaign Appearance<\/a> in ohio she said its important to recognize what paying zero taxes means for the country. Zero taxes means zero for our vets, zero for our military, zero for pel grants to send young people to college, zero for health, zero for education. Clinton says she and her husband have released their tax returns and that they pay a lot of taxes. She said she is grateful that they are able to contribute to the country. Wiki leaks ceo said that they will publish one million documents related to the election before the election date. He spoke via video link at an event in germany. He remains in the Ecuador Embassy<\/a> in london where he was granted political asylum. He did not say what the documents are that they will be releasing. He said in addition to the election, they are related to three governments. He said the documents would be released starting next week. The focus will be on clinton and trumps running mates tonight. Right. Vice president ial nominees are facing off in their first and only debate. Joe is joining us now. Im sure that you expect the tax issue to come up right off the top. I would think so. And given the mantra that was coming from the republican party, other surrogates for mr. Trump yesterday and the day before in attacking the New York Times<\/a>, they tried to turn this into a positive already. He is a good businessman. Hes a smart guy and nothing that he did were illegal. He was working with the laws to take advantage of the system. And so, you know, trump is using this as well to try to suggest that that gives him a better insight into the unfairness of the tax system, even though he has taken advantage of it. I would look for in pence to do some of that tonight as well. I really think that pence would rather, instead of defending trumps actions in the past, he would rather distinguish himself from his running mate, running opponent rather. And i think that kaine will try to do the same thing as well. The testimony contain to attack the main candidates will be overwhelming tonight. Do you think one of his jobs is to offset a lot of the questions about Hillary Clinton<\/a>s trustworthiness. Yeah, i think so. To a degree. Both candidates, clinton and trump have high negatives. Where clinton is concerned, trustworthiness and truthfulness are the big issues. And so when those arguments are made tonight, i suspect that he will be very strong in defending her. But as i said, i think at the same time, both of these candidates need to nobody is going to win this debate. The way that youre successful will judge us not by winning but by success is if you can reassure voters if you are the person in the number two spot, they should feel comfortable with you succeeding the president if something happens to the person in office. That has happened. Weve had people leave office by death or criminal reasons or in advance of that. And the next person in has to step up. So we want as voters to know that that person in the number two position is capable. Weve had candidates in the past who had reflected poorly on the candidates who selected them. Like sarah palin or dan quail by way of example. It did not advance the candidates and palin reflected poorly on john mccain who picked her as an effort to go after female voters in the 2008 who were angry about the fact that barack obama would be the nominee and not Hillary Clinton<\/a>. Hillary clinton took advantage of donald trump and used some of his comments from the first debate in ads. Thats correct. Its interesting that you mention the ad. The National Republican<\/a> committee released an ad yesterday attacking kim cain for commuting the sentence of an africanamerican prisoner. The man was found to be mentally incompetent. He also defended people who were accused of murder as a defense attorney. The ad goes after him for that. Thats likely to be a topic. Both of these guys are former governors. They have started using pepper spray on the people who work in the stores. They would ask to have the cases open and push them out of the way and large dollar amount items put them in bags and run out of the door. They got the name because of the rainbow wigs worn by the women. They were able to link them to robberies in los angeles, phoenix and honolulu. Kim kardashian west social media post may have played a role in the robbery in paris. Days before she was robbed she posted a picture of her ring worth more than 4 million. According to tmz, that ring was one of the items stolen by thieves. Five armed men barged in sunday night and stole 10 million worth of jewelry. Several Police Agencies<\/a> are looking into if theres a connection between robberies in the counties. Reporter the link has to do with the way in which the robberies were carried. Six armed robberies in various cities in contra costa county. In all of the cases the robbers abeing at thatted the victims in the driveway or garages of their own homes. Now the robberior inner linda is the one that got the most attention. That was the only one in which one of the victims was shot. There were two victims, Orinda School Board<\/a> price president carol brown was shot by the robbers. Her husband was pistol whipped during the robbery. Both are expected to recover. They will be okay. But the couple had left a Grocery Store<\/a> in orinda when they pulled into their driveway. And thats when they were confronted and robbed by three armed men. Now, similar robberies have happened also last week in these cities. Unincorporated parts of danville, antioch and knoll. They are in communication with the Police Departments<\/a> in the cities and its unclear what if any connection these crimes have but that the similarity between the cases, quote, certainly has not gone unnoticed. Communication between our agencies absolutely has taken place. Another similarity is the time of vehicle used. In at least three, victims reported that the armed men sped away in a white sedan. That is another possible link between these cases. But we are hoping to speak with Orinda Police<\/a> chief and we have contacted him this morning. We havent heard back yet. It will be interesting to talk to him more and hear about how they plan to compare notes, the different Police Agencies<\/a> on this string of armed robberies. Thank you. New overnight, angry protests in the streets of los angeles in response to two Deadly Police<\/a> shootings over the weekend. A second night of protests briefly snarled traffic south of downtown. Demonstrators were largely peaceful and no arrests made. In response to the protest, the lapd released images of the replica gun and the actual gun recovered at the scenes. This is one of the guns that one of the men pointed at police. It was without the usual plastic orange tip which is used to identify a fake gun. Police also released this image of a loaded handgun that the 18 yearold man pointed at officers before he was shot and killed. Both shootings remain under investigation. Two former Police Officers<\/a> arrested in connection with the bay area Law Enforcement<\/a> sex scandal are due in court today. Retired Oakland Police<\/a> sergeant le roadway johnson is charged with failing to report suspected child abuse after a young woman told him she had sexual contact with other officers whew i will she was under age. She had sex with dozens of local Police Officers<\/a> and sheriffs deputies, some of which happened when she was a minor. It is not your imagination. Traffic here in the bay area has in fact gotten worse over the past few years. Now a new study is ranking the worst commutes. Alex savage is joining us live along interstate 80. A well known hot spot when it comes to bad commutes. Reporter yeah. Not fun to be on this road in the morning. You know that if you have ever made that commute. According to this new study, the hot job market is putting more and more people on the road. We are at the university overpass. And thankfully up above, this bad traffic, down below on the east shore freeway. For a long time, this particular commute, the morning commute between 80 between hercules and San Francisco<\/a> was the worst in the bay area. Now this real tough ride has actually been bumped to the number two spot, if you can believe that. According to a new study from the metropolitan transportation commission, the top honors, the most congested commute in the bay area is now the evening ride trying to get out of San Francisco<\/a> heading east toward the bay bridge, along 101 or 80 in the city. That is just nasty. The 80 commute through the east bay that, again, is in second place. And the third spot on this list goes to the morning drive along 680 from san jose down into cupertino. And in fourth place on this list, the evening commute along southbound 101 from about sunnyvale to south san jose. Drivers who have been sitting in all of that traffic say it really can wear on you. Sometimes it does. You know, its a little frustrating. Especially having to be somewhere in a timely manner. It really does. Theres really not much that you can do. Just got to go with it. Road rage doesnt help. Reporter and according to this new research, the time that we spend sitting in slow traffic here in the bay area , speeds less than 35 Miles Per Hour<\/a>, its actually up 70 since 2010. Researchers say it is staggering how bad traffic has become in the past few years. There is no such thing as rush hour anymore, especially along interstate 80. A san jose man was arrested on suspicion of possessing 10,000 pornography images and videos. 61yearold dennis cruz was arrested after the Santa Clara County<\/a> sheriffs office, San Jose Police<\/a> and the fbi served a search warrant at his home on oakwood avenue. 1,000 images were recovered from his computer and even more were coming in by the second. When we did the search warrant, he was in the process of downloading child pornography as we went through the door. Santa clara sheriff investigators are not sure if cruz actually produced any pornography himself. They are looking for possible victims in the bay area. In San Francisco<\/a>, five people were arrested as part of a child pornography ring. It started six months ago. The two were arrested in june accused of uploading and distributing pornography involving children under the age of ten. Those arrests led investigators to other suspects in los angeles and sacramento county. Wild pigs have taken over a commute. Just this morning, ktvu crew saw a wild pig in the neighborhood as they were reporting. The pigs have been tearing up lawns and yards in southeast san jose. People who live there say the pigs are very active at night and suspect they are coming from ranch land across the street. Years ago they reinforced the fence with barbed wire but suspect the pigs found a hole. As it is more and more dry, they are looking for grub and looking for worms. Licensed trappers say the pigs can be dangerous so do not con front them. Putting a fence around your lawn can help to keep them away. Lets go over to sal. And, what, 32, 33 hours from first pitch.
