If there was hardly any when we first came in this morning, but it is really getting enhanced by a couple of spins rotating off the coast. And that is enhanced that fog bank i think and not much of a delta breeze. Theres still a little bit of a west or southerly southerly breeze for 40s, 50s on the temperatures. Some mid40s, fog means cool by the coast. But warmer inland temperatures getting back into those 80s, some pockets of fog will give way to sun shine. But 60s, 70s, coast and bay. And upper 70s, for some inland. Peninsula south, still. Well, thats a problem. But we also have other places in light of these other reasons youre saying, hey, i have something too, unfortunately. The service, its a small koreanamerican church, had just ended. While pastor was talking to church members, someone stole the money in the collection baskets between 8 00,000 and 10,000 in donations. Apple says its already gone through its entire iphone 7 plus stock at all of its stores. Its also already sold all of the jet black 7s. But apple says some carriers may have a few available. Well on the completely other side of things, one bay area family is going cold turkey. Actually locking up all their phones, tablets, laptops, the average adult spends eight hours of screen time every single day. Teenagers spend almost nine hours a day in front of a screen. I talked with a family thats going through what they call a Digital Detox. Reporter nineyearold brody and 6yearold juliana are spending a lot of time together these days. But that wasnt always the case. Brody used to spend hours online, mostly gaming, glued to the screen. His mom felt like a warden. Five more minutes. Five more minutes. You know, it was a constant battle of rift. Reporter it was a wake up call with which she and her husband that brody had been sneaking the sneaking the ipad in the middle of the night. We tried different techniques, you know, timers, like, apps that were timers that we would install that he would figure out how to uninstall. He became quite a techie. It was addicting because you have to collect your stuff and then like in an hour it would all be ready again. Reporter so as parents said no more and locked up every device. Theyve been screenfree since midaugust. They say the beginning was run but now its working. We all realized, okay, this is for real. This is how its going to be. I started seeing brody take out toys that i havent seen in a year. Reporter but digital use experts advice going cold turkey. I think extremes can always be a problem. Whenever anyone says like im going to go on a diet im only going to eat carrots. You know thats going to backfire. Reporter instead of swearing off screens, which may not be practical or realistic, the best thing parents can do for their children is to model judicious mindful use of technology and while Internet Addiction is not classified a mental disorder, knorr says she understands why some kid it addicting. There are some studies that show that that little buzz is like a little dopamine hit, just like gamble provides that, oh, that feels good. Reporter her suggestions for adults include setting up screenfree times and zones. And limiting yourself to checking your phone, say, once an hour. As for the souzas Digital Detox. I kind of miss screens. Reporter casey says theyll have one computer eventually in a common area. No more disappearing into a bedroom with a tablet for hours. I also want him to, you know, get that those pleasures and those feelgood, you know, approximate neurotransmitters flowing for, you know, hitting a home run or getting a on a paper. When i was there, the family said they havent used that trampoline for months. But once three cut off the screen time, kids are kids again. So theres more peace within the family, the mom said she felt like the warden. Shes not saying five more minutes, turn it off. Its restored the feeling of peace in the family. She knows shes going to reintroducing one step at a time, but right now its so nice. Its not easy in the world we live in now. Right. Its very hard, hard for the kids. Hard for the parents to enforce. Good for them. You love brody. Such a cute family. Time is 7 44. Hopefully our caught me on my screen here. I know. I know. Try telling me its for work. I wasnt pointing fingers. This is for work. Im motoring something for work. No, actually it was for work. Good morning, everybody. Lets go out and take a look at what we have with the commute and i have something that is really troublesome for 17 buzz we normally dont have such a big back will you please. Northbound 17 its a motorcycle accident and that crash has traffic backed up all the way to last can a dose. If youre trying to get to the airport, for example, and youre using 17, it is a big mess. This is having a Chain Reaction on all the other freeways in the area because 85, 280, 1 steer one, theyre all very slow here in the south bay. I do want to mention the traffic has been very slow on 101, on 280, 85, its just all linked together as you know so you need extra time if that is your drive. Lets take a look at some of the live pictures. Thats 280 in san jose. You can see its slow getting up to 280. The bay bridge has not changed. Its been steady and slow all morning long since about 5 30. About a 20 minute, 25 minute delay before you make it on to the screen on to the screen. On ton the bridge. Bart is recovering after earlier delays. Lets bring steve in with the weather. Thank you, sir. Well, we have a lot of fog filling in on the coast, parts of the bay inland, though, looks like a little warmup there. Some of that fog came roaring back. I mean, there really wasnt that much early this morning. But there is now some areas are really socked in. A little warmer. You know a little warm we are, dave. I think he has a new album. Remasters, a little warmer. Currently clear, calm, i should say. 52 in clear lake as the sunrises. High today 80. Theres a threedegree guaranty in weather. As long as youre within three degrees. Cottages as point rays. Much foggier. A big cooler at 55 degrees. And speaking of, there you are. And low clouds watch it just zoom in, engulf the coast, parts of the bay. Its getting enhanced. I think thats really enhanced that fog bank there. Although it looks like santa cruz departs in the monterey. It seems taking the turn there and heading into monterey as well. Some of the coast dealing with most of the fog. West southwest 12, not that strong. 40s, nevada, napa, san row is a. A few upper 50s. 50s, also for pittsburgh, brentwood. But look at the 40s, la fayette, walnut creek. I know san ramon was in there. That observation concord is again by the concord pavilion. 28 burr up in truckee. 49 monterey. Or cade i cant, flagstaff 38. But they hit 32 this morning. The usual day of their first frees is september 24th. Ahead of schedule as i feel everything has been running ahead of schedule here for a falllike feel. We had ours earlier this week. So theres some cool, cool readings in those higher elevations. Look at the fog. I mean its just roaring in here. So morning fog and probably linger into the afternoon for some. It will be warmer, though, inland. Theres some pockets of high fog. So we go from 60s, 70s, coast and bay, then 80s, upper 80s and a couple of very, very low 90s. East bay temperatures 71, 87 in anti okay. And brentwood. Antioch. Antioch usually just races ahead, june, july, and august. September, though, they are not as warm as others. And he said that is correct. September weather is different out towards antioch and brentwood. 80s, low mid for some on the south bay temperatures and 60s on the coast in the city. Low 70s to upper 70s, low 80s on the peninsula. Continuing to look like an offshore and northerly breeze will kick in, dave. If thats the case, everyone will be warmer by the weekend. All right. Thank you. Look, if history is any indication of how things go back in 2014, the giants were also in the wild card chase and look what happened they won the world series. This is a pretty big series going in tonight against the cardinals. This is typically the time where the giants do get hot and they make that playoff run. But as we mentioned every game counts. They did get swept by the padres yesterday. Bumgarner got the last. The giants are 2035 since the allstar break. They have not gotten those key hits and shutdown innings from the blchlt manager bruise bow hi know this. The they know how big the series is. We spoke with a fan just moments ago who runs by at t park and touches all the statutes before work. He says this will always be his team but we also asked him if hes worried . Were all worried. Im sure the players are worried. So the all the fans, the people in the bay area, we need to get together and rely on each other. Something is missing. Im not sure what it is. The pitching, you know, lets not go there. But it all its just not gelling. You know, and like they just rolling over. Thats what it seems like as a fan. Now take a look at the standings in the nl west. The giants are five games behind the dodgers. The giants are holding on to the top wild card spot a half game ahead of the mets and a game ahead of the cardinals. In fact, if the season ended today, the giants would host the mets in the layoffs. As we take it back out live, in beautiful at t park, the other good news moving forward, theyre pretty much playing here in the state of california not moving too far. They do have the series against the cardinals tonight, theyre playing in los angeles for three games against the dodgers then in San Francisco four games, then back home closer to the end of the month against the rockies and then the donors. Back on this date back in 2014, the giants were four games behind in the division as you mentioned, theyre five games back. So plenty of baseball left to be played here. And hopefully the giants will make another run. Plenty of baseball left. You should be proud, brian, the pa trade played great. Padred played against. Reporter i got one moment to cheer, so there you go. Thank you. Meanwhile the as are continuing their little hot streak. They beat the royals for the Third Straight game for their sweep today. Check in with did you swing out to the show last night . Reporter i did not only because i have to be here super early or else i would be there. Not that you havent done that before, so. I know. I know but i have to choose i also dont go to giants games for the same reason. Responsibility i like it. All right. Lets go to the east shore freeway. A lot of people have responsibilities too. They have to get to work and use this very freeway from to the maze. 50 minutes yesterday had a tweet saying i drive 21 miles from hercules to the bay bridge and its the longest 21 miles of my life. And i get what you mean there. This is not an easy freeway to commute. A lot of people are trying to get to marnin. Thats has been a slow drive. Getting to the bay bridge, another wait time here. This is about 20 minutes. It hasnt been easy there as well. We havent been talking too much about highway 4 or 680 because we havent had a lot of incidents there. We still see a lot of slow traffic on 24. 580 again i got another complaint from someone, boy this traffic on 580 is terrible. And i do not i do not disagree with you. It is not good here, driving from Castro Valerie to the valley to the lakeshore curve. Its become routine. I say so what else is new. 19, lets bring steve in with the weather. There was patches of it is patches of it the last couple of days. Thats changed in about five hours. Look at the fog just flying in on the coast and its also filling in on most even down towards monterey bay. It lacks like it looks like its trying to work its way in. It looks like its taking a taking a turn. Thats a lot of fog in an area that didnt have much. I think whats happening it looks to me a couple of little systems rotating. Water temperatures, 55 to 60. Theyve been stuck here for the longest time just a couple of degrees warmer one day then a little cooler the next. Nothing compared to last year when they were very, ver warm. Westerly breeze still in place. That equals 60s, 70s, coast and bay. Did go with a couple low 90s but thats really far inland. These are about average to slightly above inland but theyre near average to slightly below coast and bay. 60s on the coast. San francisco should be 70, were going 67, 70s peninsula are very low 80s. It does look warmer friday into saturday. It doesnt last long. Cooler weather kicks in next week. Thank you. Now to a San Francisco mystery that dates back 150 years. This is the area where or this is the hour where the oakland commute really does get busy. If youre trying to drive into oakland, it is slow here. It is slow on 580. So dont think that 580 is much better, although its improving a little bit. Its not quite backed up to castro valley. Were also looking at the bay bridge toll plaza, of course. That doesnt change much. Its been steady and slow all morning long. The peninsula weve had some slow traffic there this morning on 101 southbound out of san bruno because of earlier issues and getting into south bay we still have very slow traffic on 101, 280. So all of it is slow. 8 31. Lets go back to the desk. Police say theyre trying to find a thief who stole thousands of dollars in cash from a church. Were live at the Cornerstone Community church. You talked with the pastor. Reporter yeah. He says it is an estimated 8,000 to 10,000 and thats money that would have helped people, so its been pretty disturbing for them. This theft occurred on sunday just before 1 00 at Cornerstone Community church. A small koreanamerican church. The pastor says he just had wrapped up a sermon and he saw a man who was new to the church heading to the alter. A witness says that man grabbed all the money and ran away. The money would have gone to church maintenance, missionaries and feeding the homeless. I never had anything like this before, where somebody was bold enough to actually take the from the collection plate. So a little bit startled, surprised at how this community is changing a little bit. Reporter the pastor says he isnt angry about the loss of money but he is concerned that the theft spreads a message of fear. He says if the man needed the money, he could have asked rather than going ahead and taking it. Police are investigating. Right now they just have a vague description of a person of interest. Theyre describing him as an asian man who is in his late 30s, to early 40s. He is 45 to 46, weighing about 130 to 140 pounds. And one of the things that he had asked, you know, to the pastor was is this the last service of the day . So some people thought that was suspicious since he was sitting also in the last row. Right. Since then, a Research Team has been working to learn more about the young girl. I got an exclusive look at the preliminary results. It was right there. Reporter a San Francisco mystery, monday may 9th, a day a small casket was found underneath the floor of a garage. She looked like a little girl to me. Reporter she miranda. On her chest, she had a cross and it was made of flowers. Reporter the story captured the attention of a number of people, including one researcher right here at uc davis. He was able to obtain hair samples. After months of research we are now getting a clearer picture about who this little girl was. Does she have any living relatives out there and what caused her death . It was a mum i tied individual which is very unusual. Reporter a fro cess sore says is a part of a team of researchers. Over the last couple of months, in a small laboratory, hes been analyzing the strands of hair, combing them for clues. And now for the first time were getting results. One of the things that weve learned from her hair is theres a signal in there that tells us the last three months or so that she was probably under some duress, that she was probably starving or that she was certainly her body was waisting wasting away which is consistent with disease. Reporter due to sanitary conditions at the time, half of the children under the age of four died in the city, measles, small pox just two possibilities. In the 18th in San Francisco things like whopping whooping can you have were very common. Lots and lots of kids died from that. Tew burke close is was also very common that would lead to death. Reporter based on her dna, she says mir ra dan is of Northern European ancestry. Shes probably white christian. And based on her rare sealed metal cast iron casket with glass her family was upper class. Researchers determined she was burden ied at the ceremony. Bodies were moved around 1920, miranda was left behind. But does miranda have living rel tiffs . His Research Team determined about a dozen girls were burden ied at odd fellow between 1860 and arraign 80. We are currently getting dna samples from them. Reporter and one woman in particular as already given permission to release her dna for testing. Well get her dna profile, well match it to miranda, and see whether whether she is or this will ell us definitively if she is. Shes very excited. She did some research. Its a pretty distant relative. So this is going up, maybe five generations and then back down her family tree on a Different Branch down a couple generations. So its quite removed. The gentleman step forward. Reporter in june miranda was reburied at green lawn. When you are looking at the results when youre looking at the hair strands, do you get a sense or do you start to get a sense of a connection with the individual . I have kids too so in some ways i feel like maybe i can relate to the parents of this this girl. Reporter as summer turns to fall, as the sun starts to set earlier and earlier, the light will still shine on the mystery of miranda. Amazing, what else are the researchers looking at . One thing is interesting at least to me, theyre trying to determine on the dna from the hair which is a amazing they can do that is what type of medicines she was receiving at that time 150 years ago, if she did pass away because of disease as he had mentioned. She had been starved the last few months of her life. Thats a big thing they were looking at. We should get the results in a month or two. But in that story is whether or not that one woman who has released her dna to be examined is a relative. Right. Of miranda eave. Eave. The researchers didnt identify in any way this potential match to you . No. Okay. Exactly. So we should all know that in the future to come. So i will revisit the story. Its so interesting. Interesting. Mike, thank you. Now lets talk about whats happening at one Central Valley School District. They are calling what happened a simple mixup. But they do admit there could have been tragic consequence whens a preschooler was allowed to go home with the wrong family. It all started when a mother who normally picks um her owner child and add neighbor couldnt get to the school in time. So she called the school and said the aunt would be pick up the children. They stayed and watch the Children Play on the flay ground whfrment it came time for the aunt to leaf, i child brought over a friend and says this said this the neighbor were bringing home. That child turned to be out the not the neighbor. The mixup was discovered when the child children got home and the aunt took the other child back to school right away. But that other childs parent had already shown up at school to get her child. Now the school is reminding staff and parents that when children are signed out for signed out from school they have to find immediately. Hang out. That builds camaraderie and community. Tough to enforce. Lets check in with him. Starting to ease up . . Yes. You must leave immediately after the show is over. Good morning. Mixing with other angors or anything. You know anchors or anything. This commute were seeing on our camera at the bay bridge, one of the most predictable commutes, 25 minutes, getting on to the bridge, once you get on that that span, it does look a little bit better. People have been saying how bad their commutes are. We tt who said her commute on 580 is terrible. Those are her words, not mine. But i will say its very slow. This is a look at the south bay commute. Traffic is moving along very slowly. We had an earlier motorcycle accident. That has turned into a very slow commute all the way up to highway 101. If youre driving on the east bay commute, almost all of these commutes, is slow. Now lets go to 280 in san jose where on the left thats southbound 280. Its crowding getting over to the san jose exits. Lets go to steve paul son. Thank you, sir. Youre welcome. Well we have pretty good fog for some, not for all. S whats interesting it will be dancing around a little bit but it came flying back to most of the coast when there was very little earlier this morning. Jake said morning fog in the north bay, the fog bank marine layer is in big time. 51 degrees. Whats interesting is you can see it there, it doesnt look like its into occidental. Some of that on 101 southward. Interesting fog pattern. I mean lets face it, june, july, august were foggy, foggy for most of the coast. Parts of monterey bay are sunny. Others are getting that fog. Its back, its going to play into our weather. Got helped along by some spins. That enhanced our fog. Water temps are in the 50s to right at 60. Its running about where they should be. Theres not much of a delta breeze. Maybe stronger in some of the higher elevations. Had many lows for 40s this morning. If youre in the fog and in the 40s or low 50s, its cold. Most peninsula temperatures are warming up. 56 stanford. Seeing a little cloud there for some. Also towards parts of the south bay but beginning to burn off. It looks lick its back to a mini summer pattern. So morning fog heading back to the coast with pockets of thick fog. Temperatures inland have been rebounding. A lot more 80s now. A couple of days ago we were 15 degrees below average. Were now near averaging to above inland yet slyly below to near average coast and bay. So we go, this time of year once you get some cold air in, they dont last as long. The days are shorter, the angle of the sun is not as high. So yes were warming up. But without a really strong offshore north wind its tough to guest the fog out. Theres behind on storks hints on saturday.
