The motive is unclear, but investigators say they believe he acted alone. We believe the person that shot and killed our officers, that he is a person that was shot and killed at the scene. New this morning a heroic pilot from the vietnam war is receiving top military honors at the white house today. Lieutenant charles kettles was flying helicopters in 1967 when 80 members of the 101st Airborne Division were trapped. He was 12 vol needed to fly a rescue mission. He led the quay through gunfire. Last month in an interview with the army he said this medal of honor is not just for him. I didnt do it by myself. There were some 74 pilots and crew members involved in this whole mission that day. So its not just me. Im just leading the pack. The troops he rescued say he is only telling part of the story. During the last airlift the pilot radioed everyone had been brought out. He received another call that eight soldiers remained behind. He returned by himself and without guns to pick them up a even though his helicopter was so badly damaged it could not fly. Reporter well, good morning. State police are calling this an ambush saying that the gunman certainly was seeking out police and everything that he was doing yesterday. This community, of course, still reeling from the alton sterling shooting on july 5th, and all of the protests and unrest that followed that. The last few days had been fairly quiet in baton rouge. However, that all changed early sunday morning. About 8 40 a. M. Here along airline Highway Police got a 911 call describing a suspicious person walking down the street with a highpowered rifle. Well, when officers arrived here to the Shopping Center the shooter was dressed all in black. He was carrying extra ammunition. He was wearing a mask. As soon as officers pulled up on scene he immediately started shooting. Three officers were killed in the gun battle. Three wounded. One critically. Baton rouge Police Officer 32 yearold Montrell Jackson, 41 yearold rookie officer matthew gerald, and 45yearold deputy brad garafola. That gunman identified as gavin long from kansas city, missouri. You mentioned he turned 29 yesterday. Served in the marines from 2005 to 2010, including a tour in iraq. And as you also mentioned, he was killed by police in a shoot out that followed all of that. That was roughly seven minutes or so after he fired the first shot. Of course, if you listen to the Police Radio Traffic there, a lot of those officers, when they got on scene, saw the officers that were down. They heard the shots. They just for a time couldnt find the shooter. Brandon, i am curious, on this day has there been any changes in the way officers patrol there within that Police Department . Are they doubling up in patrol vehicles or tripling up in some instances . Reporter they are doubling up in their patrol vehicles. In fact, we saw that firsthand. Kind of a side note. Amid tension here in the bay area and around the country between police and some members of the Community One program in the east bay is working to build a Good Relationship between officers and children. Its a camp set up high in the Oakland Hills where each summer the Police Activities league invites them to camp out overnight in hopes of building relationships. They say with recent tensions this kind of bonding seems to be even more important. This is something that every Department Needs to do. Especially nowadays the way things are going on around the country. They are good people. Why . Because i know that im safe with them. They save peoples lives and they are fun. It feels great.
