We are starting off in the east bay with a lot of slow traffic approaching the bay bridge which is obviously one of the main commutes be if not the main commute in the bay area that is backed up all the way around the maccarthur maze. 3540 minute delay on this middle of the weekday. You can see traffic is going to be busy as you drive on the bridge as well. Were also looking at other things. Weve had a lot of slow traffic in other parts of the bay. The peninsula. Highway 101 in San Francisco looks like its okay here. A little bit of slowing on the central freeway getting on to southbound 101. I also want to mention southbound 880 is slow after earlier issues. The slowest part is between 237 and union city. Weve lad a couple of problems there. Some on the shoulder, some still blocking but you should try and get on the freeway after that if you can. I want to move the maps over to the Livermore Valley. Westbound 580 just moderate this morning. 7 02 lets go back to the desk. We continue to follow breaking news from sunnyvale. That is where a fire is burning at a strip mall. Ktvu fox 2 janine de la vega is there. Reporter the flames did not reach that apartment complex so that is good news. They do have it contained. We dont see anymore flames. Right now they are still spraying it but you can still see smoke rising so it could still be smoldering but they do have this contained. Now they did cut a hole in the roof there so its venting right now. What youre looking at is what used to be a barbershop. That is where most of the damage was. We were told by one of the other Business Owners that last week he was told by a Police Officer that somebody tried to set the taco roadway yeah on fire. Now we have not confirmed that information yet but we are definitely going to look into it. Lets go top video we took earlier. This fire started at 5 00 this morning. Flames were seen shooting out of the roof here at the barbershop. Firefighters arrived and they attacked the fire but it quickly spread through the attic and it then spread to the other businesses. What is in here is a taco roadway yeah, a Grocery Store, and a liquor store. I walked out in the parking lot and saw the barbershop that recently opened. I saw flames coming out of the windows. Glass was cracking. I heard two more pops. At the other businesses they have heavy smoke damage. Reporter now we have not talked to that owner of the taco roadway yeah where the flames were made. A fire was trying to get set there last week. That owner seemed very distraught. We know a fire investigator is on the way here. We will call them over here in the next hour so we can give you an update on what is going on here. Did you get a sense this morning if any of the three businesses in the strip mall were open at the time of the fire . Or had they not open yet . Reporter no. No, it doesnt appear they were open. The owner of the liquor store we spoke to he got a call at home. Same thing with the taqueria. The other thing was a Mexican Grocery store. Everything was closed. Nobody was around because we asked one of the witnesses did you see anybody running away when he heard those explosions and they said no. All we saw was the flames. Its early. When you talk to the battalion chief, bring it back and talk to us. Thank yous janine. Now to developing news in Mendocino County. That is where crews are searching for a missing five yearold boy. The boy named bret was last seen in brookville. He was last seen working a dog. A black lab named hank at 4 30 yesterday afternoon when he went missing. At least 75 people including search and rescue crews are looking for him. Marin county rescue is helping out as well. A couple of lanes at a busy intersection in union city are scheduled to open this morning. The area has been closed off for a week now because of a sink hole. Ktvu alex savidge is live on scene now. Things are still closed here but all the repair work is finished up here on alvarado boulevard where we are this morning where you can see the outline of this giant sink hole. Crews have filled the sink hole. They have repaved part of the road. Its all set for cars to drive through here and they will be any minute now reopening one westbound lane of alvarado boulevard. The sink hole was spotted last wednesday at alvarado boulevard. Just outside of Alvarado Middle School. The sink hole ruptured a water main and flooded as well. Eventually it grew to 35 by 40 feet wide and ten feet deep. Crews filled up the hole although im told they have to repair a sewer line that was damaged during all of this. In the meantime Union City Officials are trying to piece together what caused this roadway to give way one week ago. But a whole lot of work has been done in that time. As we bring you back out here live, the sink hole all filled up here and the road repaved already for cars ready to come through but thus far traffic is not flowing through this area just yet. Residents im sure are anxious for that road to open up there, alex. Thank you so much. The number of people who got sick after eating at a san jose restaurant is continuing to grow and Health Officials expect that to continue. Right now though the number of suspected cases of shigella linked to the mariscos san juan restaurant sits at 80. Some of those cases include people who didnt even eat at the restaurant but were infected later probably by people who have eaten there. The restaurant is temporarily shut down and expected to remain closed for several days. The participants of a 31year old shigella victim says this is the first time she had gone to the restaurant and hours later she was rushed to the hospital. We were so concerned she was shaking so hard. Shattering. She said she had the chills and the diarrhea wouldnt stop. The bacteria is very infectious. And one of the common ways its spread is by restaurant workers who dont wash their hands after using the restroom. There are three mariscos san juan restaurants in san jose. The other two will remain open. A Grocery Store that was shut down for Health Issues last month is closed again for the same problems. Workers are inside the pueblo food center on north capital avenue this morning. There are signs on the windows saying its closed for problems with rodents and insects and there is no word yet on when it will reopen. We tried to talk to workers and they referred all questions to their corporate headquarters. When we called we heard a recording saying offices are open at 8 30 this morning. The marine f18 jet went down today near a british air base in Eastern England about 70 miles northeast of england. The jet was based out osteomere mar Marine Corp Air station in southern california. Its a 2530 minute delay. We can look at the toll plaza there and show you traffic is backed up to the foot of the maze as you saw that. Once you get on to the bridge it does improve a little bit at least. I want to mention in san jose i can put it up on the map for you. Capital expressway near monterey highway. Monterey highway and monterey road is very slow. The capital expressway is slow. There has been a deadly pedestrian accident. This is a good injure to avoid. That is pretty solid down to some crashes we had in union city so this commute is slow. We go to the south bay where the freeways are all slow. I want to push into an area. Monterey highway at capital expressway. A good intersection to avoid as they investigate a deadly auto pedestrian accident. 7 32 lets go back to the desk. We have an update to the breaking story in the south bay. Witnesses report hearing explosions from a fire at a sunnyvale strip mall. The blaze began around 5 00 this morning at the mall near the sunnyvale golf course. The fire started inside a barbershop and quickly spread to nearby businesses including a taqueria and convenience store. One of the Business Owners told our janine de la vega that Police Believe someone tried to set fire to the taqueria last week. Janine is trying to confirm that story. There is a warning going out in the east bay. They have struck the atm at the east bank several times. Under cover Police Arrested 33 yearold blade catrell of oakland in the two most recent cases. Thieves watch users using the atm over their shoulder and pick up on their pass codes. If the customer fails to close out their banking session the thief can quickly take advantage. The second you step away with the money in your hand, your card back in the wallet. The suspect jumps over to the machine you have been on and reengage your account and reopen and continue transactions after that. San Leandro Police are sen couraging atm customers to hide their pass codes, fully log out of their accounts and be wary if someone seems to be hovering nearby. Out of control passenger was taken off an American Airlines flight from san jose after it was diverted from phoenix. The flight was on its way to dallas yesterday. A passenger tweeted a picture in the aisle. A 26yearold man appeared to be intoxicated. And then the man went back there to go to the bathroom. The nec thing i know they are holding him down. The passenger was sent on a phoenix hotel. Oakland police are investigating a bizarre incident involving two drivers that hit a man that was vandalizing cars with a machete and the incident was caught on camera. You see it all happen here. Someone on a balcony was taking this video early monday morning. It shows a man swinging a machete at a red car and then the red car circles back and hits the man. And then a white car hits that man. Police arrived to the scene shortly after the incident. The man with the machete suffered only minor injuries. He is arrested and now in a psychiatric hold. Police want to talk to the drivers of the two cars. Here they are. One was a red or maroon four door sundae. Large section of that chain link fence fell from the over crossing monday night and it landed right on interstate 880. Falling debris damaged eight cars driving by. People who drive in that area noticed the fence was tipping. A told ktvu he alerted a caltrans contractor two weeks ago but the fence seemed unstable. I called them and told them the fence was falling. No calls back. No response. Inspectors last checked the overcrossing in february. Caltrans says its trying to locate the report and its Structural Engineers are examining that bridge. The zone 7 water board is expected to vote on a plan to increase water rates once a year for the next three years. The Contra Costa Times reports the Water District is also considering an additional temporary surcharge. The paper says that is because the district has sold 5 million less water than expected as people cut back on water use because of the drought. Ktvu fox 2 janine de la vega is there. We can see the fire is out but the investigation is just beginning. Reporter yeah it is, gasia. Firefighters are taking a look at that building. You can see they have an aerial ladder up there looking at the roof. There is an investigator here because we still do not have a cause yet. One of the things they will be looking into is a small fire that happened here behind the building last week. It was at the bottom of a Storage Facility that is connected to this strip mall you are lookings at. And there appeared to be some sort of a burn pattern there. Maybe lighter fluid. It may have been intentionally set. That was last week. Take a look at the damage now. Today. Its mainly in the barbershop where you can see its completely blackened. Neighbors say they heard explosion and windows shattering just before 5 00 this morning. They looked outside and saw flames shooting from the strip mall. Firefighters arrived and started hosing the building down but the flames spread throughout the attic area. The barbershop is a total loss. The taqueria and Grocery Store have smoke damage. The Fire Department will look at the damage and see if there is any connection. At this point they dont believe the two fires are related. Based on proximity, we will look into everything and make sure we vet out all the details to determine if this one determines to be suspicious, then we have information from the previous one we can look into. Reporter firefighters cut a hole in the roof and venting the building. Its still smoldering at this hour. It was a challenge fighting it because it was an older building and the tire on the roof was very heavy so they are worried about it collapsing if they entered the building. They will be doing mopup for the next several hours. Evelyn near fair oaks that will be closed. Avoid the area if you can. As i mentioned investigators still here since they havent entered the building that will be crucial to see if there is any evidence. Right now they believe it started in the barbershop but the other fire that were talking about last week, that started outside. Not in the building and it caused minor damage. Gasia and brian. A man was struck on northbound monterey road near eastbound capital expressway around 5 50 this morning. The victim was taken to the hospital where he later died. Its not clear if the driver that hit him remained at the scene or not. Thousand to developing news out of Mendocino County where crews are searching for a missing fiveyearold boy. Bret was last seen walking his dog at 5 00 last night. The north coast news reports at least 75 people including search and rescue crews are looking for bret. Marin county search and rescue is helping out as well. After a week of waiting and traffic delays, busy road in union city is open again. Alvarado road was shut down because of a sink hole. And alex savidge is at the scene. Big deal here for people who live in this neighborhood after a week of repair work there you go the road is back open to traffic this morning. This is alvarado boulevard right at new haven street. You can see the outline of that giant sink hole right in the middle of the intersection. Crews spent the last week filling that hole. Repaving part of the road. And now traffic can drive through this area. This is a very big deal especially for parents as they try to drop their kids off at Alvarado Middle School. They tried to drive around this shut down intersection. There is quite a bit of relief for parents as they can get to school and make the drop offs much easier. This sink hole was last spotted last wednesday. Right outside of the middle school. The sink hole ruptured a water main. It also flooded as well and eventually it grew to about 35 by 40 feet wide and it was 10 feet deep. But again crews have repaired this hole. They have filled it up over the last week. Its a huge relief. For parents we talked to who said they had to drive around this closure. Normally there is traffic around here. And with that its even more traffic. But im glad they are getting it fixed and nobody got hurt. Reporter now there is still one westbound lane of alvarado boulevard that will remain closed for the foreseeable future that is because crews tell me they have to fix a sewer line here that was ruptured when the sink hole or the ground gave way here. Union city officials are trying to figure out what caused this giant sink hole in the first place. But really the good news for neighbors in this area parents who need to make the drop off at Alvarado Middle School the road is back open to traffic. That is the major question this morning. One lane is better than none. But that final lane that is still closed, did you get any sense at all how long it will take before its completely clear . Reporter no. I just had a conversation with one of the workers. Theyre glad to get one lane back open but they still have the sewer line that runs underneath the westbound lanes of alvarado boulevard. They will have to keep that lane closed. It will still be a Construction Zone if you will. But traffic at least can squeeze through. Better than nothing. Thank you alex. There is a warning going out in the east bay about thieves using old fashion shoulder surfing to steal atm pass codes and cash. Thieves are struck the bank of america on east 14th street several times starting back in may and last month. Thieves watch a user and pick up their pass code. If a customer fails to close out their banking session, the thief can quickly take advantage. The second you step away with the money in your hand, your card back in your wallet, that suspect jumps over to the machine you have been on and reengage your account and reopen it and continue transactions after that. San Leandro Police are encouraging atm customers to hide their pass codes, and fully log out of their account. Popular Grocery Store remains closed. Workers are at new pueblo food center on north capital avenue but there are signs on the window saying the store is closed with problems with rodents and insects and there is no word when the store will reopen. We tried talking to workers but they referred all questions to the corporate headquarters. When we called we got a recording saying the office is open at 8 30. Just last month the grocery deli and Bakery Department were closed for a day for the same reason. Time is 8 10. Later this morning Santa Clara County officials are scheduled to release new information about the shigella outbreak linked to a san jose restaurant. The number of suspected cases of shigella linked to the mariscos san juan restaurant has grown to 80 people. Some of those cases include people who didnt even eat at the restaurant but were infected later probably by people who ate there. The restaurant is temporarily shut down and expected to remain closed for several days. The participants of one 31year old victim says this is the first time she had gone to the restaurant and hours later she was rushed to the hospital. We were so concerned she was shaking so hard. She said she had the chills and the diarrhea wouldnt stop. The bacteria is very infectious. One of the most common ways it spreads is by restaurant workers that dont wash their hands by using the restrooms. A substitute teacher from santa rosa is due in court on child pornography charges. 39yearold ethan Monroe Morris was arrested last week. He texted photos of a young woman. Those photos were not pornographic but the Woman Tells Police he made sexual comments about those pictures. The press democrat reports morris worked in six santa rosa schools over the past two months. A lawsuit accuses California High School in san ramon of failing to come ply with state law over sex abuse allegations. According to the Bay Area News Group, the suit claims a parent told administrators about wrestling coach kevin lopez inappropriately touching children. The suit that was filed by the alleged victim accuses administrators of investigating the claims on their own rather than following the law and turning over the suspicions to police or child protective services. And 280 southbound leaving san bruno down to the Crystal Springs area is slow. So the peninsula is not having a good day. And marin this caught my eye between novato and san rafael. No breaks here. Especially heavy as you drive down to central san rafael. Lets go back to the desk. In National News a kentucky state trooper is in the hospital after being shot during a traffic stop. Investigators say the gunman stopped and then tried to run away from officers. When they tried to subdue him, he pulled out a gun and wounded the trooper. The suspect was shot by officers but his injuries are not considered life threatening. And in new york city Police Officers saluted the ambulance that carried the body of a fellow officer. 33yearold officer randolph holder was shot and killed chasing a suspect last night in new york. Holder was a Third Generation Police Officer. The accused gunman was caught after holders partner wounded him in the leg. A new York Television station has identified the suspect as a 30yearold from manhattan. New this morning the vatican is denying a report in an italian newspaper that pope francis has a small curable brain tumor. The report says the 78yearold pope traveled to a clinic in italy to see a japanese brain cancer specialist. The newspaper says the doctor determined that the small dark spot on the popes brain could be cured without surgery. Now the vatican spokesman called the publication completely unfounded reports, seriously irresponsible, and not worthy of attention. The newspaper says it stands by its story. Sheriffs deputies in calveras county are questioning someone after three people were found shot and killed. The bodies were found yesterday morning in a field in the town of Railroad Flat north of angels camp. Neighbors reported hearing gunshots in the area earlier in the morning. The oakland mural where an artist was shot and killed last month is complete. Its located right under the 580 freeway. Police say 27yearold Antonio Ramos was working on that mural when he was shot. The unvailing ceremony will be held at 2 00 this afternoon. Now earlier this month you may remember Police Released this surveillance image of a person of interest in the killing. At this point no arrests have been made in the case. A fence that fell from an overcrossing in oakland was checked and approved by inspectors in february. A large section fell from the over crossing monday night and landed on interstate 880. The falling debris damaged eight cars that were driving by. People who drive in the area say they noticed the fence had been tipping over. The neighbor tells ktvu he alerted a caltrans contractor two years ago but the fence seemed unstable. Called to them and i told them that fence was falling. No calls back. No response. Inspectors last checked that over crossing in february. Ktvu asked caltrans what was written on the inspection report. Caltrans now says its trying to locate the report and its structure engineers are reviewing the overpass to determine the problem.
