And northbound 101 near 13th on the way to the airport. Fortunately, you can use 280 or 85 as alternates. But they are in the process of moving this out of the lane. 6 01 and lets go back to the desk. Detectives are expected to be back later this morning at the scene where human remains were found near gilroy. Janine de la vega is in southern Santa Clara County with the story. And janine, what is happening out there this morning . Reporter right now not much. We havent seen too much activity right now. Deputies are standing by with crime tape. They dont want anyone entering the scene where the remains have been found. This is close to gavilan college. Sheriffs deputies are confirming that human remains were discovered at the intersection. Authorities are not told us if they belong to a male or female. They may be because they just dont know yet. The Coroners Office has not been called out to the scene. This prompted the family of a missing man by the name of videl zepeda to come out to the scene last night. We were told that there was a body found. And we are looking for my brotherinlaw. When remains are found, authorities always look at missing persons cases to see if theres a connection. And some are wondering if the remains belong to sierra lamar who disappeared in 2012. Her body has never before found. But a suspect has been charged with her murder. The mercury news reached out to her family after the remains were found but they have not been contacted by Law Enforcement and theres no indication to say that who the remains belong to. We expect that its so dark that once we start seeing daylight, investigators will reenter the scene and keep collecting evidence. The field of republican president ial candidates is getting smaller as the contest moves to South Carolina. Carly fiorina and Chris Christie have ended their campaigns after disappointing results Donald Trump Holds a solid lead in South Carolina. And while john kasich is enjoying his second place finish in new hampshire, trumps strongest rival in South Carolina could be ted cruz. This is a national campaign. Larry clareen says so far two dogs have had to go to a vet to remove tacks they swallowed. Police have a person of interest in this case. They suspect this may have stemmed from some kind of disagreement between two people. The specialist will be advising possible olympians about the risks and precautions that can be taken to avoid being bitten by the mosquitoes that carry the zika virus. And theres a confirmed case in northern california. Federal Health Officials diagnosed a person in yolo county with the zika virus. The patient is reported to be doing okay. The infection occurred while the person traveled outside the u. S. Officials are not giving us any other information right now about the patient. Yolo county Health Officials say the public is not at risk from the case. The virus spreads by mosquitoes biting an infected person and then another individual. But the person got infected while traveling outside the united states. And we dont have any concerns about that happening in yolo county or sacramento. Many people who have the zika virus will experience mild symptoms or no symptoms at all. But it can cause serious birth defects in babies whose mothers get the virus while theyre pregnant. If you think bart is crowded now. Just wait. Its being asked to build another tube before it reaches maximum capacity. The policy says if a second tube is not build. Bart may exceed capacity by 2024. A second transbay tube would help them handle the maximum amount of daily morning riders. If a new tube is approved. The planning and construction could take 10 years. Time is 6 12. And caltrans plans to ask for 140 million today to finish tearing down the old bay bridge. Part of the money is intended for a series of 15 implosions. Just like the one in november to destroy the remaining piers of the old bridge. Before the implosions, crews first have to cut and remove the remaining trusses from the old bridge. Customers will be able to reserve the highly anticipated model three starting march 31st. Reservations require a 1000 deposit. And online reservations will be accepted starting april 1st. This looks okay. We have a new crash approaching the san mateo bridge. Westbound 92 before the toll plaza. A Motor Vehicle crash and medics are on the way. And traffic will be slow approaching the san mateo bridge. And we had an earlier crash northbound 101 near 13th. Big waves are exactly what the elite surfers invited to the mavericks surf contest tomorrow. The businesses are counting on a financial boost. The last time mavericks was held two years ago. Thousands headed into the area. This year theres no designated festival space and local restaurants and bars promise good views on big screen tvs plus expanded menus and good weather. What a shot in the arm for our businesses out here. With crab season closed it changed everything. And now the mavericks comes around and it just puts a boost in everybody. The organizers are working with Law Enforcement to make that area a drone free zone. They do plan to approve a few drones to give fans a unique view of the surfing competition. In the 15year history of mavericks, no woman has ever been invited to compete. But that may change when the next mavericks competition is called. The California Coastal admission is telling organizers to come up with a plan to include women in future events. And this morning, still a 15 to 20minute delay coming through. And i wanted to mention 80 westbound. Westbound 80 you can see traffic is going to be busy in panola and richmond. And you can see traffic is going to be okay. So there are no major problems here. 6 32 and lets go back to the desk. The long debate over giving tasers to San FranciscoPolice Officers is heating up again. There are many arguments over how many if any officers should get a stun gun. Allie rasmus is in the newsroom now. Last night there was a big debate and the police chief said a small number of the Department Members should have a taser, right . Thats right. The chief and the police union submitted slightly different proposals to the commission. The commission is going to have the final say on whether San Francisco police will have tasers or not. April is the earliest they could make the decision. A big part of the process is hearing from the public. People posted the ideas of tasers and wrote words of protest on a sidewalk outside city hall. Greg suhr in talking with the commission explained that he believes tasers are a less lethal option for officers. But opponents of the idea say tasers are still a weapon and not always a safe or efficient way to deescalate tensions. I am not asking that the entire department get tasers. Im asking for about 5 . Our s. W. A. T. Team and our specialist officers. Fundamentally if you put any weapon in the hands of a racist, its going to be used in a racist way. While the chief is asking for tasers for just 5 of the force as you heard him say there, the police union would like tasers issued to all officer. The union says if officers had access to tasers, it could have prevented the Fatal Shooting of mario woods. Officials will have to review and recommend the idea. April is the earliest that the Police Commission could have a decision. Time is 6 34. The head of the San FranciscoPolice Officers association is denying the district attorneys claims that the union tried to block an investigation of police conduct. Now according to the San Francisco chronicle, martin hall ran of the Police Officers association sent an angry letter to george gas cone, he called the accusation a complete fabrication. Halloran says the union has cooperated with the Blue Ribbon Panel formed to investigate officers accused of exchanging racist and homophobic text messages. Jeffrey graves is accused of raping a woman while on duty. The alleged incident happened in september 2013 inside a hotel room in san jose. Graves testified that the sex was consensual and pled not guilty. And he could be sentenced to life in prison if convicted. He was fired from the Police Department in september. A former political consult accused of making a bomb is expected to change his plea today. Fbi agents arrested Ryan Chamberlain in june 2004. He was charged with possessing an unregistered destructive device, biological toxins, and a chemical weapon. He pled not guilty and his trial was supposed to start next week. And prosecution and defense said they were preparing a plea agreement. Two chp officers are being called heroes after talking a woman out of jumping off the bay bridge. Out of the vehicle and walked over to the side and climbed over. Reporter people driving on the eastern span tuesday evening called 911 about a suicidal woman. Officers dustin and his partner jeremy arrived on the scene. They went to the concrete ledge almost 200 feet over the bay and started talking to the woman. Took a moment to step back from the officer role. And kind of steps into a permanent role, trying to connect to her personally and as a friend. Asked her to hold my happened for a little bit. And then from there we just progressed to can you slide back just a little more . And then eventually to a standing position. Reporter they say the distraught woman was taken to the hospital to be examined. Both officers are specially trained in crisis intervention and love their jobs and they are happy there was no loss of life in this case. Still no sign yet of an Alameda County man missing since tuesday morning. 73yearold john beck was dropped off at the Oakland City Center for an appointment and never showed up. Police say he has no medical problems. Hes never done anything like this before. He was last seen wearing Navy Blue Pants and a green and blue played shirt. A treatment clinic for ex offenders will not move to a San Francisco location after all. They were planning to move from market to the Duboce Triangle neighborhood. Community groups argued the location was too close to schools and child care centers. Sharper future said out of respect for the community and the critical work weve do weve elected to seek an alternative location. The organization has not said where the location would be. Its going to be a little bit slow as we start off. The traffic will be a little bit slow as you head up to the bay bridge toll plaza. There are no major problems here. We do have slow traffic as you drive onto the bridge itself. We had a much earlier crash that was cleared rather quickly. Getting to the san mateo bridge has not been good. Heavy had a crash on westbound 92. A motorcycle accident and even though the crash has been moved to the right, if youre getting to it from the minimum its freeway, its taking a long time. You may consider the dumbarton bridge which is better. And im just saying i think its going to be busy in the near future. And lets go up to 280 in san jose. Northbound 280 on the right. And traffic is okay getting into the valley. At 6 50 lets go to steve. A lot of high clouds and the sunrise photos are coming in. Before we get there we have other information to get to. A lot of the cloud cover will keep some of the temperatures from maybe reaching warmer levels, but still above average and a pretty picture here. And lots of orange in the morning sky. Looks good. February we had rain on the and he can third. So we havent had rain since then. My calculations say eight days, it will probably go out to 14 or so. Thats forever. Not really, not really. During strong el nino years and this is a strong el nino year, were focuses on San Francisco. In 1982, 82, there were 22 days of dry weather. Began on december 24th. In 1997, 98, we had 17 days beginning on december 18th. We are currently at eight days. We could go farther. And the longest stretch was during a weak la nina. Midwinter dry stretches are not uncommon. We have a long way to go before we hit 17 days. Thoughts of a miracle march. Im leaning on march as a wet month. Ive been saying that since october. We have a little bit of rain to the north. 40s on the temps, and some of these temps again. 43 gilroy to 45 morgan hill. Boulder creek, and 49 in santa cruz. And 47 saratoga. The dramatic standoff between antigovernment protesters and the fbi in oregon may be over soon, maybe today. The last four protesters are expected to surrender today. An armed militia has been holed up at a wildlife refugee since january 2nd. The nevada rancher bundy was arrested by the fbi. He was on his way to the wildlife refugee. He is facing federal charges in relation to a standoff with authorities at his ranch over unpaid grazing fees. Two of his sons are in jail for helping to organize the standoff. A berkeley man is in jail, suspected of having a gun while driving out of control and ramming dozens of cars, including police cars. Police started chasing the man yesterday morning in west oakland and captured him outside of aloni park. A pregnant driver was injured along the way. She was taken to the hospital with nonlifethreatening injuries. The man deliberately crashed into vehicles, including berkeley and Oakland Police cars that were trying to stop him. On the side of the road he swiped me. And then he swiped the car in front of me. He would look at the driver and intentionally drive his vehicle into that persons car. Additionally, he would point a firearm at them. Police say they havent yet found the suspects gun. They say he may have thrown it somewhere between the park and the North Berkeley bart station.
