In todays health check, if you are a baby boomer between 5171, you need to be tested for hepatitis c and that is the word for the center for Disease Control and prevention in atlanta. Hepatitis c is a bloodborne virus that can cause severe liver damage. Baby boomers are at risk and we are joined live from atlanta with some of the answers. Why this group . Good morning. Experts link that the baby boomers make up about 75 of the hepatitis c cases right now in the country, and they fear that many may not know they are infected. The situation could go back decades when people were exposed by getting a blood transfusion, going through organ transplant surgery, or they received infected blood that was infected with hepatitis c. We did not start screening and eliminating hepatitis c from the blood supply until 1992. If you received a blood transfusion or an organ transplant before 1992, when the universal safety precautions when in the plays and we were able to rid the blood of hepatitis c, you need to be tested for the virus because you may not know that you have it. There are not any real symptoms to know and you also say that doctors do not automatically test you so you have to ask for the test. I would ask for it. The cdc said if you were born between 1945 and 1965, when you go in for your regular checkup ask your doctor to run a test for hepatitis c. That can be done with your regular blood panel but you have to ask for it sometimes because it may not be on the radar screen of the doctor. You are considered at elevated risk in that group and you need to know so you can get on the treatment plan. What would the next step be and what other treatments to protect your liver if you have been dealing this without knowing it . That is the good news because there are very effective treatments that can actually cure the virus if you carry it. They can rid your body of the virus, and it is important to get the treatment because the disease is quietly, slowly and chronically damaging your liver. It can lead to the need for liver transplant which is serious. If you test positive for hepatitis c do whatever you can to take care of your liver which may mean cutting back severely on alcohol, or eliminating alcohol which can tax the liver. Be careful about medications you take that can compromise your liver, overthecounter supplements or prescription drugs, and work with your doctor about what to take and whatnot to take. Thank you for the update. It is 5 37 am. Blue cross blue shield want you to get your doctors appointment and is willing to pay for the ride by lyft.
