Reporter they were some of the oakland firefighters who risked their lives, saving people from the threestory building burning on san pablo avenue the morning of march 27th. We were all upstairs. It was 5 in the morning or so. I was ao sleep in my bunk. I was asleep in my bunch. Many were familiar with the building that housed nearly 100 people. As crews approachd . I could smell it from blocks away. You can see the embers in the air. As soon as we stepped off of the truck, there were people yelling that people were trapped and in the windows. The first thing we want to do when we get to a fire is see if there are any rescues. Reporter the scene was chaotic as people inside the building, which serves as transitional housing, was going up in flames. They tied sheets together like in a cartoon and they were trying to make like a rope to literally climb down on a sheet. Reporter this is what they trained for as they quickly leapt into action. We pulled the fire escape down, tied it off and up we went to the second and third floor. There was a lady. She reached out. I pulled her over the railing. Next, a gentleman that reached out and i pulled him. Reporter they rescued seven people from this burning building. All eyes were not spared as four people died in the fire. When youre a firefighter, you want to save everybody. Its upsetting when you cant do that. Its a tragedy. We do everything we can in our power to save as many people as we can. Reporter all together, they saved the lives of more than 20 people that day, but knowing that some people didnt make it out alive will stay with them forever. You do have a loss of life, but you look at how many people can see another day. Nothing special about us. Were nothing more than an usher, an usher to life. Reporter theyre a humble group of firefighters and wont accept a pat on the back saying it comes with the territory and that is just their job. This morning, a temporary shelter for the survivors of that fire is closing. About 70 people who lost their hopes in the fire moved into a temporary shelter at the Oakland Youth Center last week. All but 11 have since found other places to live. The city of oakland said that the shelter was just a temporary solution and that youth center needs the space back. Some residents said that they still have nowhere else to go. This is closing and the people are homeless. They sold us out. Were sold out. The black people of oakland business they trying to clean us out. City leaders said theyre working to find longerterm housing for the people who are still at the shelter this morning. The most recent happened monday night when a car hit and killed a 72 knowyearold man on monterey road in south san jose. It was the 10th pedestrian killed this year in that city and the 12th traffic death. 18 pedestrians were killed in san jose in all of last year. And most of this fatalities that occurred so far this year are behavioral related. So its very important that we address the behavior of drivers. Cyclists, and pedestrians. The goal of the vision zero programs to reduce the number of deadly accidents to zero. The safety ideas include improvements to busy roads like adding barriers to bike lanes to protect cyclists from traffic. Rules of installation insulation helped fuel a fire at a home. The crews used a ladder truck to spray water on the fire from above. No injuries were reported but the home sustained significant damage. Investigators believed the fire started in the attic of that home. The official cause is still under investigation. San Francisco City leaders are setting a controversial idea aimed at helping heroin users. The supervisor is looking at opening what show calls a safe injection site. The idea is to give addicts a safe place to inject drugs where counselors and Health Officers would be close by.
