Reporter bill and wendy maxwellle left their home two days after the ghost ship warehouse fire, and now spend every day at the st. Francis burn unit visiting their son. They agreed to meet us near the hospital. He texted us and said im out, im alive, and i had no idea what he was talking about. Reporter their son, an oakland book seller, had been to the ghost ship several times before the incident. He smelled smoke, and was helping look for any electrical problem when the lights went out, and the flames came up through the floorboards. He felt his way along the floor, and knew his way well enough around to be able to find his way back to the front door. Reporter sam was said to be the last person to make it out alive. He was transferred to Saint Francis because of his smoke inhallation. When he made it to the burn unit, he found out his situation was much more serious, and that he would have to be indeuced into coma. They put me through to his doctor immediately, and she talked to me about what was going on with him, and said they needed to intubate him because his throat was swelling, and i said i havent seen him, and she said how far away are you . And i said about an hour and a half. And she said im sorry i cant wait that long. Reporter he spent the next five and a half weeks breathing through a ventilator in a coma. Whatever he inhaled, it affected his ability to process reporter sam is is is now awake, but still at any time sam is is now awake, but still cannot move in or talk. Reporter they dont know how much of the fire he remembers, but he does not know the enormity of the loss.
