We are beginning here on mornings on 2 with developing news from santa clara. Police officers arrested a burglary suspect accused of breaking into a house and then stabbing a man. Ktvus Tara Moriarty is in santa clara at that home. You have some new information about the victim. Good morning, tara. Reporter good morning. Neighbors are pretty shocked around here. They say that the victim is a man in his 50s and it was his sister who initially confronted the burglar after he snuck in through an open kitchen window. All of this unfolded around 3 00 this morning. The police say the prowler entered through an open window. Detectives say a woman confronted the burglar when he slipped through the window. Her brother heard the commotion and came running. Thats when he was stabbed several times with a knife by the suspect. Neighbors say they are just surprised by the violence. Yeah. I have lived here a long time and its a quiet neighborhood. Things are becoming, ever since the down turn in the economy, there has been more crime around. This is the first time anything like this has occurred that i know of. Reporter officers say the suspect is a 24yearold man. He was taken into custody. Found in some bushes nearby. The victim is expected to survive but has multiple stab wounds. We are not sure why the window was left open. Perhaps because of the recent hot weather. Were not sure. A steady increase in ridership is forcing commuters to basically fight for spots at some stations. Ktvus alex savidge is live in present hill to explain the plan to deal with the problem. Good morning, alex. Reporter good morning to you. Bart is planning to use technology to make sure that riders dont waste a lot of time searching for open Parking Spaces at garages around the bay area. Often it can be tough to find spots, open spaces at these garages. You can see the Pleasant Hill garage is getting wizzier busier here this morning. The plan for bart in the long term is to install more signage that alerts drivers when all a of the daily use spots have been taken up. These signs work in conjunction with sensors in all of the Parking Spaces. The problem that exists right now is Pleasant Hill is just one of two stations with a system like this in place. At many of the other bart stations around the bay area its a free for all during the morning commute hours. Drivers spent a lot of time driving through garages searching for an open spot. Oftentimes they are forced to find offsite parking. Parking at bart stations is only getting tougher these days and thats because average ridership is up significantly compared with last year. More than 400,000 riders use bart every day. The system has just 46,000 Parking Spaces to offer. Many commuters say its frustrate to go find a spot. One man has found a way around. I ride a motorcycle. Its usually a spot and its free. Reporter according to the San Francisco chronicle part of the solution to this parking crunch is to install parking garage alert signs like the ones they have here in Pleasant Hill at four more stations. They expect to have those systems installed within the next year and, at the same time, bart is also considering using text and email alerts to send those out to riders to let them know that a particular garage at a particular station is already full so drivers dont waste their time driving around searching for a spot. A couple pulled up and offered her a lift if she paid for gas. When they reached a gas station the victim reached out to pay at the pump but then the couple bolted with her belongings, including a guitar, an ipad she had borrowed and her book bag. Its frustrating because i thought these people were helping me, but instead they robbed me. They stole all my belongings. The 22yearold victim is an opera singer and says she has little money, earning what she can by giving voice lessons while attending Santa Clara University police have identified the suspect but he is still on the loose. A public memorial for a former San Jose Police chief who made Ground Breaking changes in the Police Department. Joe mcnamara died last month at the age of 79 after a long battle with cancer. The attorney for the family of jahi mcmath returns to Court Next Week to try to have her legally declared alive. She is the oakland teenager who was declared braindead ten months ago after suffering complications from tonsil surgery. The family wants a judge to reverse that decision, saying she is showing signs of brain activity. A judges ruling she is still alive would make the family eligible for state benefits. A bay area restaurant chain has wrapped up a fundraiser to help the families of missing children. It was tied to a tragedy 21 years ago. All day yesterday they raised money for the Klaas Kids Foundation at 19 of the bay area restaurants. The organization was founded by marc klaas. His daughter polywas murdered in 1993. Since then we have had megans law, which is about the registration and Community Notification of sex offenders. We have had the amber alert, which is an immediate alert system for missing children.
