fire that started and what's being done now to control the flames. more violence in ferguson missouri. the new problems as protesters continue to clash with law enforcement over the deadly police shooting of an unarmed man. we're live in san jose where there's been two hit-and- run accidents in the past two days on the same street. we'll tell you where police are at in their investigation and how the victim is doing. we're following developing news in marin county this morning where a small plane has crashed sparking multiple times. we have crews on the scene. alex savidge will tell us what is being done. morning i'm tori campbell. >> good morning, i've dave clark. your buddy mr. drizzle is here. >> misty and mr. drizzle. clouds, cool, drizzly down to morgan hill so that's letting you know that it's making a good surge inland. favoring areas to the east of us right now. you can get a good look at that low as it goes through the bay area. as it does toward sacramento valley. maybe some shower activity toward the sierra nevada. 58 in san francisco to start. we'll go 63. looks pretty stuck to me. low 50s for many. temperatures have not moved much. the gust has been up and been holding steady. the gray is in place and that's going to give us a below normal day on the temps. a lot of clouds. the fog deck may be slow to burn back. upper 70s for many or very low 80s. 60s closer to the waters edge. we have traffic in the east shore. we keep coming back to that because of the accident. it took them 30 minutes to clear it. here on ashby. 32 minutes which as you know is a little up there for this commute. usually we're in the 18 to 20 minute mark and right now it's obviously more than that. please give yourself extra time when you get to the bay bridge there's going to be a little bit of waiting as well. although it's only 25 minutes, so it's improved a little bit since we first started. as you look at the commute near hayward, 880 southbound is slow approaching eighth street and tenison. we have a lot of slow traffic here already. we have the drive times up from grant line road to the 680 interchange it's taking 40 minutes. now let's go back to the desk. thank you,sal. 7:03. we're following developing news where a plane crash happened. alex sadvige just talked to the marin county firefighters and joins us with more on this crash. >> reporter: the sheriff lieutenant can confirm that at the very least the pilot of this plane was in fact, killed in this crash late last night. right now invest bay -- investigators are trying to figure out if there was anyone else in this plane. the single engine plane was flying from oregon to a small airport in novato where it went down. this is where it went down. just on the other side of this hill is where the plane crashed. this is just off of hicks valley road. and that crash touched off a good size brush fire. hopefully we can show you some of that video here as marin county fire fighters work to get that fire under control earl this many morning. at last check the fire burned 40 acres. while fighting those planes that's when authorities found the wreckage of this plane that had been missing. one person found dead inside the wreckage. crews had been searching for the single engine beach sized plane since last night. that's when the pilot reported to the faa that the plane was having engine problems. authorities were able to track the plane to this area using radar. just after midnight, sheriff deputies who were driving around this area spoted the brush fire at first o first and that ultimately led to the discovery of the plane's wreckage. again we understand this small plane was on its way from oregon to naas field in novato when it crashed. and the area where it crashed is 7 miles west of the airport. we understand both the ntsb and faa will be involved in this investigation. and at the same time, fire crews are still working to gain full control of that brush fire right now it is only about 50% contained. we'll continue to monitor the situation here in marin county. alex savidge. a celebration of life is planned this saturday for a 36- year-old man who died in a rock climbing accident in yosemite and it happened shortly after he proposed to his girlfriend. these are facebook photos of brad parker and his girlfriend janie dial. the two had been climbing cathedral peak. after dial accepted parker's proposal. park -- parker went on to climb crest by himself. he was also an avid surfer and a paddle out is being planned for this saturday. a san diego woman died while hiking down a trail to an overlook in the grand canyon of yellow stone. she apparently stepped off the trail and lost her footing. it was the park's second accidental death this month and a third this year. a man plunged to his death in a popular hiking spot. donald odwire lost his footing at the edge of a hillside near sign post14 and fell 100 feet. it happened about 8:20 sunday night. the scenic view from grizzly peak is popular with hikers but the terrain can be dangerous. this is the second accidental death so far this year. in may lorenzo trujillo fell off a rock near sign post15 and that's the same spot where another man died in november 2012. time is now 7:07. police are investigate ago hit and remember -- run crash on center road. this is the second serious hit- and-run crash on center road in just the past two nights and now the police are asking for your help. ktvu's janine dela vega is joining us live. >> reporter: that victim is hanging on at the hospital but in grave condition. he was hit right here at center and oldom. that's just a block away from where another man was hit sunday night by a car. police say just after 8:15 last night a driver struck a man who was crossing the street and sped away. the man who was hit was rushed to the hospital and is now listed in critical condition. the only information they have about that vehicle involved is that it was a white four door sedan. last night's pedestrian crash comes after a bicyclists was hit by a hit-and-run driver just a block away at center and balfore. >> both drivers suspects haven't been identified yet. they're still at large. we're asking for a lot of help from the public in these two incidents. hopefully we can get justice for family members. >> reporter: police are looking for information from people who work in the area but they say they need more leads. and they say anyone with information on the hit-and-run should call them right away. investigators are interested in getting good vehicle descriptions. in the previous accident sunday night it was just a dark colored vehicle that was seen leaving so pretty thin information at this point. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega. jorge alberto tejada put his arms around a 17-year-old employee and allegedly tried to kiss her. police say the girl repeatedly pulled away until he released her and that this happened sometime late last year but police say it wasn't reported until may of this year. now police say they're not aware of any other alleged victims but they're asking anyone with information to get in contact with them. the number of people who depend on food banks has gone up around the bay area. the second harvest food bank of santa clara and san mateo county served 250,000 people every month. that's about one in every 10 residentless. and a 21% jump in 10 years. the rate of people needing food help that's higher than the national average with five in 10 people needing help. one meal every day for each needy county resident by the year 2018. it is 7:10. most californians seem to be happy with the nation's new health affordable law. a new field poll shows that 56% of registered voters who visited the covered california site said they were satisfied with their experience. over all one out of three voters had visited the site and 9% of those people said they eventually got health coverage on the covered california website. the recent poll shows the highest approval rating yet since the affordable care act was signed into law four years ago. enrollment for the program only started about 10 months ago. a power plant with ties to the bay area has found a unique way to harvest the sun's energy but at a cost. it's causing birds to burst into flames and explode. and california's energy commission is now looking into this new form of solar energy. it's filing records of birds being zapped likely by sun rays concentrated by thousands of mirrors at the energy plants in the middle of desert. workers call the birds streamers due to the meteor like trail of smoke seen as the birds fall. this is located on the mohabe desert and is owned by google and other partners. missouri overnight. we'll have a live report on the latest developments including the recent announcement that inpacts schools in that area. right now we're looking at a commute where traffic is still very slow. we had a couple of incidents that kind of made things bad in some areas as you can see 280 northbound is slowing down getting into the valley. we'll take a look at the south bay commune coming. lots of gray skies, low cloud decks are enhanced by a system that's over us. a lot of drizzle, we'll look at what the temperatures will be the áf for -- will be. this way, this way. come on. tensions continue to escalate after another night of protests in ferguson missouri. 31 people were arrested, two were shot and two buildings burned. police say of the people arrested some came as far away as california and new york. now police say once again the protests during the day remain peaceful. but things took a violent turn after 10:00 p.m. reporter safadi is in ferguson now to let us know what the missouri state police are doing about this rising tensions. >> reporter: good morning to you tori. the pattern we've seen here in ferguson is by day the protests mainly peaceful but as the sun goes down it does take a tkra mat -- dramatic turn for the worse. police here last night did something new, they ended uplifting the curfew they had implemented the night before before it led to a violent clash. >> we're going to make this neighborhood whole, we're going to make this community hole and we're going to do it together. >> reporter: as emotional police captain says that the streets are being hijacked by a small group that he calls violent agitators. his the comments made after a peaceful day ended with a clash. a few people threw poll molotov cocktails at authorities trying to provoke them. >> i'm not going to let criminals who have come here from across this country or live in this community define this neighborhood and define what we're going to do to make it right. >> reporter: making it right for many protesters means arresting darren wilson. the officers that police say shot and killed michael brown. >> we want the officer darren wilson arrested. we're here for mike brown and we're not going to let outside infiltrators come in and destroy our good m o vement. i'm determined to not allow it. >> reporter: the violence has been so great that classes have been cancelled and the national guard has been called in. and eric holder will meet with the fbi and the officers conducting the criminal investigation. time is now 7:17. now to our continuing coverage of the violence in the middle east. it appears the latest seize fire between israel and iraq is not holding. the israeli military carried out several -- there was supposed to be a 24 hour extension to the seize fire in place to give negotiators in egypt more time to work out a long term deal. >> free, free, free palestine. >> don't cross the picket line. now these protesters set up a picket line at the port of oakland they asked longshoremen don't cross the line to unload that ship. the protesters say they want to send a message to israel to stop what they call its occupation of gaza. however the israeli council skwreb says this protest is miss guided. >> who suffers? it will be americans, people of oakland, people of california. they're the ones that are going to suffer from this attempt to protest. >> we'll shut down this ship and it will sail away from here without unloading its cargo and without picking up its cargo. >> reporter: some say they are planning a protest at senator barbara boxer's office and they promise they will be back at the port again. all right, 7:19. sal has been busy this morning as you mentioned. interstate 80 has been slow from the beginning of the commute, still slow sal? >> yeah it's still slow. that's because of a crash that happened before 6:00. it has blocked all lanes. that crash is gone but i'm showing you with the road sensors how red it is from richmond to the berkeley area. you can see for yourself. traffic is still slow as you drive into berkeley it's a 32 minute drive in all from the cardenas bridge to mcarthur. the accident was here, it's gone but for a while it blocked lanes before they moved it out of the way. the toll plaza has been moderate. there have been no major problems there. livermore valley again with the slow from the grant line road area into the main part of livermore and eventually into pleasanton. and in san jose we talked about 280 is slow at 17. i'll show you that 85 is slow into saratoga. >> thank you and a very good morning. not only low clouds there's plenty of those. there's also a few high clouds generally off to the east. they're close but mainly off to the sacramento, san joaquin valley heading out to the sierra nevada. the low which we show you yesterday which dropped down the coast. it is influencing the cloud bank. inland to morgan hill is getting drizzle. that tells us it's going to be cooler. you can either thank or blame this low. let's give it credit it's here and that seems to be the cloud cover wrapping around, it's close. you can probably see if we're out toward eastern solano and santa clara. it's taking a more east and south over us. the morning drizzle, light rain. misty conditions. cloudy to mostly cloudy. only a few breaks there. the low will continue to work its way south toward big surh. have lunch and then it will move off to the valley. looks like it will eject to nevada tomorrow. the stage is set, the damage is done for a cool cool day. 64 and we'll go 68. temperatures coming in below average for everyone here. 50s and 60s currently. i think they've been there all morning long because of the cloud cover. a southerly breeze for santa rosa. west for sfo even to livermore. 69 sacramento. low clouds into sacramento, sacramento valley that means they'll cool down along with that very strong delta breeze. so a lot of clouds it'll wednesday and a little cool down as the low moves out. not too much. we bump it out to saturday. they stopped a school shooting before it happened. the specific plan that police say two california teenagers had for a massacre at their school in southern california. a movie theater infested with bedbugs. how the theater is responding and concerns the infestation may be more widespread. this morning we're learning that a lodi movie theater that closed had a complaint of bedbugs last week. but lodi's code enforcement staff says it recently received a complaint in fact, three weeks ago and was assured the problem was treated and resolved. now the theater is closed and is not expected to reopen until thursday. an exterminator said it may need more than one treatment. >> it's difficult to get rid of yes because of where they hide. they can latch on to your clothes, curtains. >> word about the bedbugs spread quickly on facebook. some moviegoers say they're worried they may have unknowingly carried the bedbugs home with them. pardo had been the announcer for several shows. >> i always told everyone if you want a program to have any longevity you must hire me as an announcer because look at the shows, the price is right still on the air, jeopardy still on the air. >> pardo announced parades, sports and news programs for nbc. don pardo was 86 years old. disturbing details dave, how is it over there? is it cool. >> i had to step outside. there's a lot of drizzle reports that's for sure more so than we've had in a while. some of those could sneak back in but the low going right down the coast has picked up that fog bank and the depth of it is 3,000 feet. so there's plenty o -- to go when you pick up this kind of a system. san jose will start off mostly overcast. we'll go 77 today. that could be as we say a soft 77. 50s and 60s, 57 napa, 59 fairfield. san jose low 60s. livermore low 60s. higher clouds might decide to heat up. for us there's a lot of low clouds and it'll be cool. breezy to windy at times. very low 80s even well inland. 50s closer to the water. >> we do have a look at interstate 280 in san jose. and we have some slow traffic there as you come up from downtown. and are trying to drive into sunny vale or cupertino. it has been pretty slow and i can show you the map of the south bay where traffic is going to be busy on 280 but 85 is much slower. if you're taking 280 probably a bargain any way because 85 is slow right from the almadone valley into cupertino. 880 is also slow from hayward and san lorenzo area down into fremont. and 80 westbound has been a problem all morning long because of earlier problems here from rich phopd -- richmond down to the mcarthur maze. that's about triple the drive time you normally see so you need to leave the house early. let's go to the bay bridge. that's backed up the áf -- up to a 20 minute drive into san francisco. new this morning pope francis is mourning the death of three of his relatives who died in a car crash. the vatican says it happened today in argentina. a small car carrying the pope's nephew and his family crashed today. the pope's great nephews they were two years old and 8 months old. and the children's mother were all killed in that crash. the pope's nephew however survived. the vatican says pope francis is deeply shaken by what happened. he's asking all who share in his grief to unite with him in prayer. meantime back here at home a suspicious device blown up by the bomb squad near the federal building in san francisco turned out to be a pvc pipe. the bomb squad was called to the phillip burton building last night. the suspicious pipe was inside a vehicle. take a look at some photos gathered on social media as all of this was unfolding last night. that suspicious device turned out to be a white pvc pipe. people said they were jolted awake as the bomb squad detonated that pipe. several cars stopped traffic on the 980 freeway near 880 about 1:00 this morning as they sped off. all this comes as the chp is trying to find everyone who may have been part of a big side show sunday. the biggest one happened near the port of oakland but there were others on 580 and 880. >> they blocked off the whole freeway. it was just shocking to me to see that amount of people. >> they continued running traffic breaks and slowing down the traffic which again is extremely dangerous. >> the chp says when that side show moved to the toll plaza. drivers got out of their car and you can see them. they covered up their license plates. as we told you yesterday on mornings on two a motorcyclists involved in that side show died after a high speed chase with the chp. it is 7:34. about 13,000 people are being evacuated from a large fire burning east of merced. it began yesterday afternoon near the highway 49 junction in oakhurst. this is new video of the fire from overnight. so far 1,200 acres have burned and the fire is zero percent contained. 500 buildings are threatened. several roads in the oakhurst are closed. the mad era county sheriff department have opened two evacuation centers. new details on a redding man accused of killing his father. steve bland was reported missing. his son james bland dropped his father off in april. he wasn't seen for two months ago a friend of james said he was shown a body who he said he killed in a drug deal. james body was found burned. >> i have never seen a case where a son killed their own father in that manner. time now 7:37, a grand jury indictment reveals gruesome details of a meat recall. the inindictment is claiming employees distributed diseased meat even though it did not pass inspection. the indictment claims the company sold meat even after the cows were found to have eye cancer. a uc berkeley student has the west nile virus. and this follows a recent increase in the number of mosquitoes with west nile. ktvu's tara moriarty joining us at the cal campus where that student will likely have to miss a semester while she recooperating. >> obviously this semester isn't in the cards for her she says that's because doctors diagnosed her with west nile thyroid meningitis. it's a very serious type of the disease. at first murphy didn't realize that she had even contracted west nile. three weeks ago she got a rash on her arms and she thought she was having an allergic reaction. then she had neck pain which she thought was from a bike accident. then she started having headaches. murphy was healthy, active. she was training for a triotholon. she thought only old people got west nile. but everyone is open to the risk. and her parents have been very active on facebook letting people know. making sure you have no standing water in your home to attract the insects. the murphies live in modesto where the weather is a lot warmer. there have been no reported cases in alameda county since two cases of the virus were first reported in 2012. five people contracted west nile in santa clara county this year. so if you do live in those warmer areas make sure that you protect yourself against mosquitoes. live in berkeley. i'm tara moriarty. 7:38. a hayward elementary school has been burglarized twice in two weeks and that could make a difficult start to the start of the school year. when students arrive they will be without computers, crayon, paper and sports equipment. the school mostly serves low income families and the school principal says it will be tough to replace everything that was taken. >> i'm having a corporate parents who are going to go to their ceo and say hey my kids school needs 10 new computers. >> the principal says she is installing some stronger locks. even though they are not authorized by the district for its part the district says it will install some better school doors. now time now 7:39. it's a story we've been following since 4:30 this morning. developing news in marin county. a plane crash sparked a grass fire. it happened in novato. alex savidge is there now with the latest on what we've learned. >> reporter: marin county sheriff's officials are telling us that the pilot of that small plane were jolted in that crash. authorities are working to make sure that no one else was in that plane that went down. it happened in a rural area on hicks county road where we are this morning. you can see the scene here. firefighters all morning long have been working to contain a brush fire that broke out. it was sparked as a result of that crash. it's about 40 acres or so. this is video of marin county firefighters worked to put out the flames this morning. while fighting the flames authorities then found the wreckage of this plane that had been missing since last night. and again one person was found dead inside that wreckage. crews began to search for that single engine beach craft plane at around 9:30 last night. that's when the pilot reported to the faa that the plane was having engine problems as it flew from oregon to a small airport in novato. authorities were able to track the plane's location using radar. finally just after midnight sheriff's deputies were who driving around in this area spotted the brush fire and that ultimately led to the discovery of that wreckage. listen to a sheriff's lieutenant explain. >> it took us an hour after arriving at the scene before we located the wreckage area. >> reporter: the sheriff lieutenant tells us the plane was headed to naas. both the ntsb and faa will will be involved in this investigation. in the meantime there still is a fire fight ongoing for the marin county firefighters. they're working to control the flames, the fire that started as a result of that crash. that fire right now is just 50% contained. we're live this morning in arrested two boys who planned a massacre. police have been following the boys after they were alerted that the kids were planning to kill at least three staffers. police found evidence the boys had been researching how to get weapons. meantime the california state senate will debate a new gun control bill this week. it was prompted by the killing of six people earlier this year near uc santa barbara. now it's called the gun violence restraining order. it would allow law enforcement, family members or people who live with someone at risk of hurting themselves or others to ask a judge to ban that person from possessing or buying a gun. >> family members are often the first to notice that someone is at risk to be dangerous to themselves or others. >> anything related to end the violence and to protect our children, i'm full support over that. >> 19-year-old george chan who grew up in san jose was visiting two friends at uc santa barbara when all three were stabbed to death by a roommate elliot rogers. rogers went on to shoot, stab before killing himself. san francisco teachers are one step close er to a strike. at issue money. the district is offering an 8.5% raise over three years. while the union requests a 21% raise over that same period. the next bargaining session is scheduled for september 2nd. teachers though cannot strike until that process has played out. major league baseball commissioner bud selig comes to the oakland coliseum today as part of his farewell tour. selig will make an appearance before the a's host the mets. selig who's 80 years old will retire next year after spending the past 22 years as baseball's chief executive. critics say he failed though in one of his major goals as commissioner. selig had said he would get a new ball club for the a's either in oakland or elsewhere. still to be determined. >> he's here. time now 7:57. let's go to sal. 880 is getting worse. >> it is. the drive time between the cardenas bridge and the maze is 40 minutes. this is partly due to a crash we had and we have also had other crashs in this back up. i have a feeling that people are approaching the road maybe someone is not paying attention and there's been some rear end crashes. we're almost bordering on an hour getting through from the bridge to the mcarthur maze. this is a good day for you to take b.a.r.t. perhaps taking an alternate route. san alto is not a good alternate. it getting really backed up when things like this occur. this entire commute is very slow into the city. the traffic accident is going to be busy on 680 to walnut creek. we have slow traffic from livermore on to the main part of pleasanton and dublin. let's go to steve. >> thank you sir. very cloudy morning and lots of reports of drizzle from san francisco, to vallejo and even parts of the east bay down to the santa clara valley. maybe where you are as well. there's a low that is going right past the bay area on its way to monterey and points south it will turn inland. drizzle, lots of drizzle or mistment some of that has been measurable. still keeping partly to mostly cloudy. cooler and breezy. i don't think this is high enough. some of those could sneak back in because you can see the low as it slides back. it could come back into the valley and wrap it back in. that will likely be more the east bay and santa clara not the north bay i don't think. it sets us up for a day of cool weather not only today but into tomorrow so it dives into the san joaquin valley. then it should head out toward novato. it's generating its own cloud cover. drizzle, partly to mostly cloudy. there's a few breaks but many areas say cloudy. they did at 5:00 a.m. in fact. morning drizzle giving way to partly sunny, partly cloudy skies. we're slow to recover. they have not moved one bit. fairfield at 59. foster city and belmont 57. that low cloud deck is going to stick around here for a while. low clouds all the way out to the sacramento valley. and tell us it's going to be a cool day well below normal temps away from the coast. 57 monterey. i mentioned this earlier. maybe really early a lot of you were probably asleep. i talked to my friend in new york city he said he's used the air conditioner two times. lives in caldwell new jersey, working in new york city. he says it's 80 and nice as can be. i said really, let me tell you what our 70s on the peninsula. a little warmer till the end of the week but really not that much. >> all right, steve. time is now 7:51. the texas company the one that lost a $1 billion contract to pick up trash in oakland they're now suing the city of oakland. city council awarded the new contract to california waste solutions which is based in oakland. the lawsuit is claiming the city council has personal connections and is biased toward cws. the texas company waste management wants an alameda county superior court judge to throw out the council's decision. coming up in the next hour on was 18 hours after news chopper 2 took this video of the accident that forced the closure yesterday morning. the crash caused power lines to come down on the street. briefly causing a power outage to 1,700 customers. early this morning pg & e brought up the power lines and fixed the toll. the death of a fan at levi stadium is raising concerns of a possible heat problem at the new home of the 49ers. the 49ers traded chilly candle stick park for a sunny and warm new stadium in santa clara. the move south may have caused an unexpected health problem. the fatal heart attack of a man in the stands may be tied to sunday's 80-degree heat and the santa clara department says it responded to 60 other emergency calls at the stadium. a lot of them tied to the sun and the hot temperatures. the 49ers now reviewing whether they need to make changes because of the heat. but so far the team has not announced any specific plans. now this sunday you can watch the 49ers play right here on ktvu. the coverage begins 12:30 p.m. our live special all access pass levi's stadium. then at 1:00 it's the 49ers playing the san diego chargers. it is 7:56. the viral fund raising effort known as the als ice bucket challenge is now inspiring other local charities to get creative with the way they raise money. last night the san francisco police officer known as the hot cop for his fit -- fit physique not that i noticed had six ice buckets poured over him for charity. last night's ice dump was inspired by the ice bucket challenge which raises money for als also known as low garrett's disease. harbaugh and bill gates just some of the local celebrities that took part. the fund raised $15 million over the last four weeks alone. compared to 1 million over the same time period last year. a new online dating site is getting people high on love. the site bringing together people that smoke marijuana. he says he's recently connected with potential investors and is hoping to boost membership at plane crash. the pilot of the single engine plane was kill. right now authorities are trying to figure out if there are any other victims. meanwhile this fire is 50% contained. alex savid ge has been dave clark. >> and i'm tori campbell. a will the of low clouds in place, many many reports of drizzle are missed and even higher clouds. a lot of these look like they'll favor areas to the east and south of us but the low which is going right down the coast moving right past the bay area said hey how are you doing. it is on its way to the bay. some of that could fire up thunderstorms activity in the sierra or maybe wrap around some cloud cover for us. low 60s, 50s, made it to the valley. gusting to 33 at travis. even they had cloudy skies you can see some of that cloud cover. again just to the east of us. clouds a lot of clouds cooler, morning drizzle. windy at times. temperatures with that cloud deck in place will be below average. that's not something we've had a lot of this summer. upper 70s, 60s for many. >> it's been a mess this morning on interstate 80. i want to show it to you because it really has been getting the attention of all the commute. and you can see, the red line which means traffic is very slow from pretty much hercules all the way down into the berkeley area. this is incredible. and it's leading to some severe drive times. we're almost at an hour between the carquenez the áf bridge. the average speed is 20 miles per hour. maybe worse getting down into that area so it's not a good alternate route. let's go to the bay bridge where traffic is going to be busy at the toll plaza. traffic is backed up for a 30 minute drive into san francisco. and if you're taking, i think i went out of order here. that's why i confused the guys. let's take a look at highway 24 if you will indulge me here. westbound 580, 24 also a mess. so very slow in the east bay. people trying to find a way around that 80s stuff. and it's just terrible. 8:03 let's go back to the desk. >> thank you sal. we continue to follow developing news where a pilot has been killed in a plane crash that sparked a large fire. the plane had engine troubling -- troubles just outside the airport in novato. and we go to alex savidge with how crews crews had trouble getting to the site. >> reporter: i just spoke to the investigators and they do confirm the pilot is the only person killed in this crash. the plane was flying from oregon to the san carlos airport when it went down here in this area where we are this morning. a rural part of west marin county. right off of hicks valley road. and that crash touched off a pretty good sized brush fire. marin firefighters were busy all morning long working to get this fire out of control. those planes that charred 40 acres right now and the fire is still 50% contained. the wreckage of this plane had been missing for several hourless. they found the one person dead inside. crews had been searching for the plane since around 9:30 last night. that's when the pilot reported having engine problems and said he was going to try to make it to nas field the airport in novato. authorities then lost track of the plane. finally last night deputies spotted this brush hire in this rural area then located the wreckage. but accessing the crash site is a challenge. >> just because where if plane is located is within the middle of the fire. so you have to access to the fire to get to the scene. >> reporter: and again we just learned from the faa that this small plane with just the pilot on board was on its way from oregon to the san carlos airport when it went down here in rural marin county about 7 miles west of the naas airport near me novato near highway 101. and apparently the pilot was trying to make it to that airport when his plane crashed last night. both the ntsb and faa will be involved in this investigation. in the meantime the brush fire that was sparked because of that crash last night, crews are still working to contain those flames. and they have the fire 50% contained at this time. alex savige. time is 8:06. san jose police investigating a hit-and-run accident last night on center road. the victim is in critical condition. it's the second serious hit-and- run crash on that road in the past two nights. ktvu's janine de la vega joining us now about the two crashes within one block. and what are neighbors saying. >> reporter: one man walking to the bus stop told us he is not surprised that pedestrians got hit here on center road. because he says vehicles tend to travel fast here. we've seen several people who have had to run across the crosswalk there and cars approaching have not slowed down. last night at 8:15, police say a man was hit last night while crossing center road at oldem. he was rushed to the hospital. the vehicle left the scene and police say the only information they have is that it was a white four door sedan. they spent last night collecting evidence and canvassing the neighborhood to see if anyone had information. those who live in the area say that section of center road is dangerous even with the crosswalk. >> if you can press a button to go across the street. they will see that you do it and they will still keep coming. you have to battle to get across the street. even with the one that's up the street the other sign i noticed that it's really hard to get across the street. because they don't stop. >> reporter: another hit-and- run accident happened just a block away at center and belfore on sunday night. the man hit in that accident died from his injuries yesterday morning. san jose police say anyone with information about either hit- and-run should contact them right away. investigators are especially interested in getting good vehicle descriptions. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu news. a celebration of life is planned this saturday for a 36- year-old man who died in a rock climbing accident in yosemite shortly after he proposed to his girlfriend. these are facebook photos of brad parker and janie dial. the two had been climbing cathedral peak in yosemite on saturday. after dial accepted parker's proposal. parker went on to climb mathis crest alone. his body was found that evening. parker was also an avid surfer and a paddle out is being held saturday morning where the river meets the ocean. an 8-year-old girl from the san diego area died after falling more than 500 feet while hiking with her family in yellow stone national park. the national park service says the girl and her family were hiking down a trail to an overlook in the grand canyon of yellow stone. she apparently stepped off the trail and lost her footing. it was the park's second accidental death this month and the third this year. all right tori, time is 8:09. a palo alto instructor is facing charges. police say the girl repeatedly pulled away until he released her. and that this happened sometime late last year but police say it wasn't reported until may of this year. police say they don't know of any other complaints but anyone with information should contact the police. a power plant with bay area ties has found a unique way to harness the sun's energy but not without also causing some harm. in fact, it's causing birds to be zapped then burned by sun rays concentrated over 300,000 mirrors at the energy plant in the mohabe desert. workers call the birds streamers due to the meteor like trail of smoke seen as the birds head to the ground. it's owned in part by google and an energy company based in oakland. now the commission is looking into the safety of this new form of solar energy. it turns out teachers missed more days of school each year than students. according to the chronicle, public school teachers in san francisco will on average each be absent about 11 out of the 80 total school days this year. that compares to the six days per year missed by a typical student. the average new this morning pope francis is mourning the death of four of his family members who died in a crash this morning. a car carrying the pope's nephew and the nephew's family were in the crash. the children and the children's mother were all killed. the pope's nephew survived. the vatican says pope francis is deeply shaken and he's asking all who share in his grief to join in prayer. it was another night of violence in ferguson missouri. reporter safadi says it's just a small group of protesters that turn the demonstration into chaos. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you tori. the pattern that we're seeing here in ferguson is that by day the protests are mostly peaceful. but then after the sun goes down, it really does make a dramatic turn for the worse. now police last night here tried something new. they lifted a curfew that had been in place for the previous two nights but it still led to a chaotic and violent night in the streets of ferguson. >> i'm telling you we're going to make this neighborhood whole. we're going to make this community whole and we're going tide it together. >> reporter: an emotional captain ron johnson saying that the streets are being grip hold by what he calls violent agitators. the áf the áf a night of violence end -- the night of violence ended but not without clashes. a few people threw molotov cocktails, bottles and rocks at authorities trying to provoke them. >> i'm not going to let criminals that have come out here from across the country or live in this community define this neighborhood and define what we're going to do to make it right. >> reporter: making it right for many protesters means arresting darren wilson. the officer that police say shot and killed michael brown. >> we want the officer darren wilson arrested. we're here for mike brown and we're not going to let outside infiltrators come in and destroy our good movement. >> reporter: the situation remains so unstable that classes have been kapbs -- cancelled for the rest of the week and the national guard is on the scene. coming at a key time for this community the attorney general eric holder will visit here tomorrow. he will meet with community leaders but also fbi and doj personnel who are conducting the criminal investigation. back to you. meanwhile the mother of trayvon martin is reaching out to the family of michael brown. martin was shot and killed in february of 2012 by george zimmerman in florida. the neighborhood watch captain claimed he acted in self- defense and was found not guilty of second degree murder. in a letter published in time magazine martin's mother says quote she wishes that she had a word of comfort but the truth is she can only pray because their lives are forever changed. >> wow. all right so i keep repeating myself. let's go right to 80 between the carquinez bridge and the bridge. you're adding an extra half hour just to make the same trip. i'm advising you to use b.a.r.t. or to put the trip off. about a 25 to 30 minute delay at the toll plaza. maybe a little more than that. seems to be more crowded. once you make it on to the bridge it looks good. highway680 is not that bad. you might consider using 680 and taking 680 from the benetia bridge. it is one thought but the best thing is to put off the commute if you can. all right, at 818 let's go to steve. >> well, i saw your a lot of activity something to keep in mind for next week. 50s and 60s on the temps and a cool westerly breeze behind that. the cool elevations are dropped off. 59 fremont i think they've been kicked up. the breeze was 39 miles per hour. it's still up there at 39. most locations have a component of a westerly breeze or southerly. weather temps are still kind of mild. 60, 62 in monterey. they really stay in the low 60s. if we had 49, 51 or 52 then you would be seeing much colder temperatures at the coast. those warmer ocean temps are holding off the temps on pacifica, daly city. because even though they have the low cloud deck the temperatures are cooling. it's going to be a much below normal day on these temps here. especially for some inland areas. even with the sunshine here it looks like 70s and 80s. kentfield 73. santa rosa 75. napa 77. 79 concord. which is almost unheard of. 78 danville. 79 livermore. 65 alameda. 70s for san jose, santa clara valley low 80s. 68 san bruno. cross the picket line. >> reporter: the protesters set up a picket line at the port and they asked longshoremen don't cross it to unload the ship. the protesters say they want to send a message to israel to stop what they call its occupation of gaza. but the israeli council general say it is protest is misguided. >> so who suffers. it'll be americans, people of oakland. people of california. they're the ones that are going to suffer from this attempt to protest. >> we'll shut down this ship and it'll sail away from here without unloading its cargo and without picking up its cargo. >> reporter: reportedly there's a plan to protest today at senator barbara boxer's oakland office and the demonstrators say they will be back at the port again. we're learning that a lodi movie theater closed because of a bedbug infestation the áf had a previous complaint -- infestation had a previous complaint. now the theater is closed and is not expected to reopen until thursday. an exterminator says it may need more than one treatment. >> they're difficult to get rid of yes because of where they hide. they can latch on to your clothes. curtains. >> word about the bedbug spread quickly on about your weather and traffic. steve has a lot to tell you. >> i do indeed. thank you dave. i love your tie this morning. >> thank you very much. >> thank you for the ladies who say they love this tie. we have plenty to go around. we have a low right there also sending in some higher mid- level clouds that could trigger a shower or two but i think it'll be out to the valley or up to the sierra nevada. for us it's just a cool pattern with and lots of reports of drizzle. 50s and 60s. 59 hoof half-moon bay. and that's going to a low low temps. upper 70s for some, low 80s for others. >> we have a lot of slow traffic this morning on 80. that has been the top traffic story. 80 westbound i'll show you the map it's a solid red line coming from hercules always -- all the way down into the berkeley area. just everyone getting back on the road for the early commute taking almost an hour to do that stretch down to the carquinez. we've been feeling it today in the east bay especially in that particular corridor. we're also looking at slow traffic in livermore to hayward on westbound 92 as you drive through. the traffic is slow. i just want to mention that highway 92 itself is not doing very well. as we focus in on half-moon bay area. coming in from half-moon bay over the hill it is one solid line of slow traffic because of an earlier crash near the lake. so if that is your commute you have to give yourself an extra 15 to 20 minutes. now let's go back to the desk. 8:31. we have new information for you about the developing news in marin county where a pilot was killed in a late night plane crash. that plane had engine problems just outside the airport in novato. ktvu's alex savige joining us live with more information on the owners of the plane. >> reporter: the pilot was killed overnight. federal investigators believe they were the only person on board. the plane was headed from oregon to the bay area when it ran into some kind of trouble and it went down here in this rural area where we are this morning. this is west marin county right off of hicks valley road. that plane crash touched off a brush fire and all morning long marin county firefighters have been working to contain that brush fire and get it under control. it's burned so far about 40 acres or so. the wreckage of that missing plane was found in the middle of that charred hillside. one person again found dead inside that wreckage. crews first began searching for this single engine beach craft plane around 9:30 last night. that's when the pilot reported having engine problems. the pilot was trying to get to a small airfield in novato where the plane dropped off of radar. the plane was headed to the san car low airport when it went missing. finally just after midnight, sheriff deputies who were searching this remote area spotted that brush fire and that ultimately led them to the crash site. >> we began conducting searches of the area out here. it took three hours until a time when a deputy luckily was able to spot the orange glow of a fire up on the hillside which at this point he called to the fire resources to come. even at that point it took us an hour after arriving at the scene to locate the wreckage within the fire area. >> reporter: fire crews right now are still working to fully contain that fire. it's still burning and is only 60% contained as we speak. and they will be working throughout the day in all likelihood to get that fire fully contained. authorities have not identified the pilot of the plane who died in this crash but we do know that the small plane was registered to two people in redwood city and los altos. -- >> we just lost our signal there with alex but we'll have much more on the plane crash on ktvu. a suspicious device blown up by the bomb squad was determined to be a pvc pipe. the bomb squad was called out to the tenderloin last night. the suspicious device was inside the vehicle. these are pictures that were gathered on social media. as the situation was unfolding. police say the suspicious device was a white, pvc pipe. people said they were jolted away when the device was detonated by the bomb squad. your time is 8:34. grand jury indictment reveals disturbing details. the recall of 8.7 million pounds of beef processed at a plant caused the closure. the claim the áf the -- the claim is that workers sold diseased meat. the diseased meat was distributed to churches, schools and nonprofit organizations. it is 8:35. a 19-year-old uc berkeley student will have to delay the start of her fall semester after being diagnosed with west nile virus. tara moriarty has more on whether or not the doctors know where she contracted the virus. >> reporter: no knows for sure where abbie caught the virus. public health officials say that mosquitoes that are in warmer weather that is where the virus tends to replicate faster in mosquitoes. sew that could be per happen it is area where she caught -- perhaps where she caught it. murphy didn't realize she had contracted west nile virus. he got pain in her neck and thought it might have been from a bike accident. but she contracted meningitis which causes the spinal cord to be inflamed. murphy was healthy, active, training for a triotholon. she thought only older people got west nile but of course everyone is at risk. abbie's dad chris has posted pictures of the four ds, dress in long clothing to protect yourself, deet, wearing bug repellent and drain. making sure you don't have standing water. there are no reported cases of west nile in alameda county since two cases of the virus were reported in 2012. five people contracted west nile in santa clara county this year. abbie says she is just going to have to stay at home and recooperate for up to three months. she says she is completely exhausted sleeping 18 hours a day. live from berkeley, i'm tara moriarty. >> thank you, tara. 8:36 more side show activity was reported overnight in oakland. witnesses tell ktvu that several cars stopped traffic on a 980 freeway near 880 around 1:00 this morning before speeding off. the latest activity comes as the chp continues to try and track down anyone who may have been involved in a major side show on sunday. the chp says the biggest one happened near the port of oakland. but there were others on 580 and 880. >> they blocked off the whole freeway. it was just shocking to me to see that amount of people. >> they continued running traffic breaks and slowing down the traffic which once again is extremely dangerous. >> the chp says when the side show moved to the plaza drivers pulled over and covered up their license plates. a motorcyclists involved in the side show died after a high speed chase with the chp. time is 8:37. school is back around the bay area. and in san francisco drivers you're being warned be extra careful this morning especially around crosswalks. now both police and parents are especial little on high alert after the death on friday of a 2-year-old girl who was hit and killed in the south of market crosswalk. the san francisco police department has added officers at nine schools this week where there's a lot of traffic. >> we're going to have extra officers out at those schools to ensure drivers do slow down nor our children that are using the streets. >> san francisco is the first city in the country to reduce school zone speed limits to 15- miles-an-hour city wide. ten pedestrians have been killed in san francisco so far this year. the city wants to reduce that number. you can find more bay area school openings marin county. it happened around 9:30. the faa says the unidentified pilot was flying from oregon to san carlos when the plane had engine problems. that crash ignited a 40-acre grass fire. the faa investigation continues. san jose police are investigating a hit-and-run accident last night on center road. the victim in critical condition. now it's the second serious hit- and-run crash on that road in the past two nights. ktvu's janine de la vega joining us live now to tell us about the two crashes just a block apart. and janine you talked to someone who saw the latest crash. >> reporter: that's right dave. he didn't want to speak on camera but he told me off camera in spanish that he saw the vehicle slam into the man here on center road. he said it happened so fast that he couldn't grab a picture of the license plate or get a good description of the car. police say just after 8:15 last night a driver who was crossing center road and then it sped away. the man who was hit was rushed to the hospital and is now listed in critical condition. the only information they have about the vehicle involved was that it was a white sedan. this happens after a bicyclists was killed by a driver on center and bifore. people we spoke to this morning told us about how vehicles drive on center and how the accidents may change their behavior. >> people are not paying attention. this is in the daytime. you would see it early in the morning if you're out here for a while. all the people trying to cross the street. >> yes i have jaywalked before. but, yeah i think i'm betting safe than sorry to crosswalk would be good to use. >> here's video we took in the last 20 minutes showing pedestrians waiting on center road at the crosswalk where one of the accidents happened. the cars aren't stopping even though the light is flashing, signaling a pedestrian is waiting it takes eight cars to pass before one finally stops for a pedestrian. san jose police say they need more leads in both cases and they say anyone with information on either hit-and- run should contact them right away. investigators need good transcriptions of the vehicles in either case. a volcano erupted in iceland and this could affect air travel plans for millions of the travelers around the world. take a look at video of 2010 that's when a volcano erupted in iceland sending huge ice clouds into the sky. this affected european air space for six days. it caused the airlines billions of the dollars in cancelled flights. yesterday iceland raised the travel threat level. this could cause a similar travel crisis. it is 8:46. pg & e has pleaded not guilty to new felony charges linked to the deadly pipeline explosion and fire in san bruno. attorneys for the utility entered that plea in a federal courtroom in san francisco yesterday. prosecutors have charged pg & e with 28 federal criminal counts including obstruction of justice for its response to the pipeline disaster four years ago. the city of san bruno also wants the federal government to appoint an independent monitor to oversee the ongoing relationship between pg & e and a california public utilities commission. >> that cozy relationship exists. it existed previously. we do not trust the pcuc to perform its statutory function. >> the utility faces a fine of up to $1.1 billion if convicted. the death of a fan at levi's stadium on sunday at the 49ers game is raising concern of a possible heat problem at the 49ers new home in santa clara. the team traded chilly candle stick park for a sunny and warm new stadium in santa clara. and this may have caused an unexpected health problem. the fatal heart attack of a man in the stands may be connected to sunday's 80-degree heat. and the santa clara fire department says it responded to 60 other emergency calls at the stadium. and a lot of it was tied to the sun and the hot temperatures. >> we did see quite a few people that were fanning themselves. especially the elderly were on gurneys. >> you have people having alcoholic beverages, caffeinated beverages and just sitting in the sun can just ware down on someone throughout the day. >> the 49ers are not well. the biggest delay has been in the freeways. 80 westbound coming in through the freeway. but also half-moon bay 92. very slow because of an earlier accident near skyline getting out of half-moon bay today is going to be tough. highway conditions are also slow. okay at the toll plaza, no major delay but it's about a 30 minute. now let's go to steve. we've seen some areas of fog helped out by this fog. looks like a lot of that sphaoáufing -- looks like a lot of that fog is moving out of the picture. some of that moving back around. some of that sometimes can sneak in from the east. but the fog is in place and the reports of drizzle and mist were widespread. now there's been some clearing to the north and as this low drops south it'll go down to around santa barbara and head out by the next 24 hours it should be out of the picture. then we'll see temperatures slowly recovering. but 50s, 60s here. looks like a very cool day for some well away from the coast and even by the coast. the delta breeze is there. point rays 60. so that does not allow some of the coastal temps even though there was all that fog they still stay in the hour 60s. you can see a lot of that higher cloud deck stays east and south. morning drizzle might stick around for a while here. a little breezy to windy at times. 60s, 70s and low 80s. these are far far below average. it'll be back tonight and tomorrow night not as extensive. tomorrow morning, thursday, friday, saturday more of a northwest direction as we go into the weekend and maybe a little cooler by sunday. time is now 8:51. i'll paint the the viral fund raising effort known as the als ice bucket challenge is now inspiring local charities to get creative with the way they raise money. well you see there, last night the san francisco families and their loved ones. it supports their families when bad things happen. >> he was inspired by the ice bucket challenge that raises money for als. jim harbaugh and bill gates are just some of the big name celebrities who have taken part. the challenge helped raise $15 million over the past three weeks alone for als compared to less than 2 million during the same time period last year. a benefit in the hamptons took an unusual turn when two political heavyweights went head to head on the dance floor. all right the video is a little shaky but that man there is former presidential candidate john mccain doing the robot. so far no clear winner has been declared. and chris christie also took part. and michael yuri of ugly betty. buyer and seller is what's it's called. it's about
