Closer to the coast more 70s than 80s. Good morning. Right now we have a crash that just cleared out from oakland freeways and we watched it clear up near oak street. The crash is gone but the traffic is a little bit slow. The good thing about this particular stretch of freeway is it clears up almost immediately after a crash is moved. The bad news is just down the road sometimes this has a deleterious affect on the traffic. We will see what happens. This is the bay bridge toll plaza. It is backed up for a 20minute drive time into San Francisco. South bay commute is surprising me pleasantly. There is a little bit of slow traffic on 85 and 280 and 101 but its not all that bad as you drive through. Maybe they are just starting later. 680 is backed up. An earlier crash at Pleasant Hill on the shoulder. We have a look at some of these drive times here. You can see that 580, which is the drive time which is the longest, 580 grant line road to the 586 80 interchange 40 minutes plus. Back to the desk. 7 09. A south bay man is behind bars accused of kidnapping two women and this morning we are hearing from one of the victims. Ktvus alex savage is live with more on how this young woman managed to get away. Good morning, alex. Good morning to you. An incredible story. This young woman says her accused kidnapper was forcing her to drive around and she made a dramatic escape by intentionally crashing the car they were in so she could get help from police. We talked with the victim in this case. 19yearold Daniella Alvarez who is a sophomore in college. She showed us a bruise on her arm from this man. A man she doesnt know came up to her house near san jose or in san jose, i should say, answered asked for a ride to his Fathers House in Mountain View. Alvarez says that 23yearold man, kenneth the middle brook, said he was in the army and had a suspended license and thats why he couldnt drive. She trusted him and agreed to give him a ride. After they got to his Fathers House alvarez middle brooks mood quickly changed. He became angry and threatened to kill her. I mostly couldnt believe what was happening. Like it all happened so fast. I wasnt even like i was in shock. Like i honestly thought that this guy was normal. Like hes from the army, you know. Like i never expected him to try to hurt me or anything. And he seemed so normal. Reporter and even though middlebrook seemed sincere middlebrook seemed sincere she learned she cant trust anyone. She deliberately crashed the car the two were in on a car in a freeway here in the south bay and the other driver involved in that crash then called 911 and she got away. After that freeway crash, though, Mountain View police say middlebrook drove off by himself and investigators say at that point he abducted another woman. A 61yearold and forced her to drive to a small town in the sierra foothills. That second victim eventually managed to escape as well and police took middlebrook into custody. Investigators say they are trying to figure out if there are other victims possibly connected to this case. Thousands will march and rally in San Francisco, oakland and san jose protesting for workers rights and the rights of undocumented immigrants. Some people are hesitant to talk about how they feel about immigrants being here illegally and working. Others understand the struggle. Here in san jose we usually have a very large turnout, and today this is one of the gathering places, at story and king roads, where people march for immigration reform. This is video from last year where hundreds rallied for change in immigration policies. Its a tradition every march 1. Today state leaders, undocumented workers will march to city hall. There are events planned at city hall in San Francisco and Fruitvale Plaza in oakland. Last night organizers there were making banners and preparing for the days events. They are highlighting the struggles of hardworking families who have been separated from loved ones because of deportation. One man we spoke to this morning says he can relate. I dont have annum preg like that. But i know people who have that and its hard, you know, because of the kids, they get separated from the fathers, you know. It is really hard. Reporter those who are participating in todays event say they are still seeking good jobs that pay fair wages. They are fighting displacement as home prices sky rocket. The events in the area are expected to be peaceful. Police in oakland blame past problems on a few troublemakers and say they will work to keep things safe. Here in san jose the events begin early with a News Conference at 1 30 this morning. A mass at our Lady Guadalupe at 1 p. M. There are speakers that will talk at the church and the march starts at 4 p. M. Janine de la vega. A berkeley man has filed a federal lawsuit. He is accusing Oakland Police of using Excessive Force during a mayday protest in 2012. 67yearold russell bathes claims he was filming the rally and says Police Officers knocked him to the ground and repeatedly beat him with their batons. He says he suffered a concussion and has posttraumatic stress disorder. Mayday demonstrations have become violent in turkey. Police tried to break up the demonstration using tear gas and water canons. The protesters were angry about a government corruption scandal. About a half hour ago amnesty is international blamed the turkish government saying the peaceful march was cut off by a human wall of riot police. It is 7 09. Tonight the Berkeley City Council will hold a special meet to go discuss raising the citys minimum wage. Right now berkeley businesses must pay workers the state minimum wage of 8. 00 an hour. The mayor is proposing a raise to 10. 04 in november and it will go to 11. 20 next april. Then adjust to 12. 25 the following year. That would put it in line with proposals currently being considered by oakland and richmond. The city of San Francisco is asking the public to weigh in with ideas on how to balance the budget. San Francisco Mayor ed lee and the board of supervisors will hold an online town hall meeting today to get the publics ideas about the budget process. The city is facing projected shortfall of more than 66 million this fiscal year. The online town hall meeting starts at 9 30 this morning on the mayors web page and his youtube channel. Meanwhile, the city of San Francisco has reached a tentative contract agreement with one of its larger Public Employee unions. It could serve as a template for agreements with 27 other city Union Contracts up for renewal. Ispte local 21 covers about 3300 city planners, contract compliance officers, and health educators. For the past five years wilson was the assistant superintendent of the Denver Public school system. The school board spent a year searching for a new superintendent. Wilson beat out 20 other applicants. His first day on the new job will be july 1st. And his fouryear contract comes with some very nice perks. Free lodging for six months in addition to paid moving expenses. A monthly allowance of 750 for local travel. Free healthcare premiums for himself and for his family. And 56,000 in bonus payments. Under the new rules sleeve tattoos on arms and legs will not be allowed. A brushfire is currently threatening homes in Rancho Cucamonga just north of the 210 highway. We have just learned the fire is now 0 10 contained and two firefighters were hurt while battling this fire. Firefighters are also concerned about wildfire and rare plants in the area. Various animals and or vegetation in those areas that are, you know, rare and endangered type species that just require us to be careful when we are working around them. Mandatory evacuations have been lifted. Voluntary evacuations, though, are still in place. Meanwhile, one person was killed in a brushfire in San Diego County that also forced evacuations. Firefighters found a badly burned body yesterday afternoon while responding to a fire near a homeless camp in national city. A woman who lives in the camp says the victim may be one of her friends. I cant find her. She is not anywhere. Investigators plan to return to the scene of the fire later today to search for the cause and to try to find out more about the person who died. You are going to be waiting a little bit. I would go 580 instead of 880 at this point. Lets look at the toll plaza. 25minute drive time between the end of the line at the toll plaza and the San Francisco exits. 680 still slow. We had an earlier accident in Pleasant Hill.
