Thats where security is reviewing tape and trying to determine how a teenager was able to climb into the wheel well of a hawaiibound jet. When you get to the bay bridge toll plaza, the traffic is backed up 30 minutes between oakland and San Francisco. Its prete busy. As we look at the nimitz freeway, we have slowing southbound 880 at stevenson. For the move part the traffic is a little lighter than it normally would be. We still have time for it to build up. But its okay. Lets go back to the desk. We begin with a story that sounds too crazy to be true. The fbi says a 16yearold stowed away in the wheel well on a from san jose to hawaii and walked away without a screech. Tara moriarty is live to tell us how the boy got on the plane in the first place. Reporter thats exactly what is making passengers here a little nervous. How was this teenager able to slip by security, hop a fence. Weve noticed here at the airport, if you take a look behind me, you can see the Hawaiian Airlines, we have no curbside checking this morning. Somehow, this 16yearold boy did survive the five and a half hour flight from san jose to maui. Maui news released this photo. The teen appears to be unarmed. Investigators say flight 45 took off around 8 00 sunday morning he endured frigid temperatures at 38,000 feet in the air. He passed out after takeoff and regained consciousness after the plane landed. While passengers here are amazed a his story, they ares can concerned about they are also concerned about security. You wonder with all of the workers on the tarmac why didnt anyone see him or question him. Reporter now, the fbi took the santa clara boy into custody after he jumped off the wheel well and started to Wander Around the tarmac in maui. Investigators say the man ran away from home after he had an argument with his family. His family has been notified. Hes in child protective services. No charges have been filed yet. Weve put in calls to the tsa and fbi as well as the airport officials here at san jose to figure out when this boy, if and when, will return home. So far, weve not received a call back. Last year a 15yearold nigeria boy survived after he stowed away in a commercial plane that flew 45 minutes. Experts say the teen survived that situation in part because that plane reached an altitude of only 21,000 feet. In 2010, a 20yearold romania man survived a flight from vienna to londons air. He sod away he stowed away in a 747. 7 05. Hours ago, Police Arrested an armed man after an overnight standoff in san jose. It happened on del paso avenue near camden avenue. It all started about 8 00 last night. Police received reports of a man firing shots into the ground. Police were able to make contact with that man. He was taken into custody at about 3 30 this morning. 7 06. An oakland man is being called a hero for a water rescue of two children. It happened late yesterday afternoon at marino park in san leandro. Jose was walking along the shoreline with his family when he heard a girl scream for help. Well, he jumped into the water, he grabbed her, then spotted an arm flailing even further out. So he went in a second time. He found a boy floating face down. He found the unconscious boy brought into shore and performed cpr. He revived the child by the time paramedics arrived. Luckily, the Good Samaritan was there and did his job. We did our job and delivered him and did our job bringing him to the emergency room. He was taken to Childrens Hospital of oakland. He was in Critical Condition at last check. He with an older brother on shore before going out to the water. If you are thinking about going to a bay area beach, the High Surf Advisory expired about two hours ago. It was in effect for the entire california coast between sonoma to monterey. Over the weekend, as crowds of people headed to the bay area beach, that High Surf Advisory was in effect which means more rip currents and sneaker waves. Lifeguards say ankle deep water is still enough to sweep an adult out to sea. 7 07. Happening now the first wave of runners is now on the course at this years Boston Marathon. That includes the elite group of men and women. Claudine wong is in boston at the finish line talking to runners and the people who came out to support them. Good morning, claudine. Reporter well, it is getting to be a situation of walltowall folks at the finish line. You can see let me give you a look around as people are trying to get a good point for the runners who will take their way here. It will take a while. It will take about two hours before they get here. Take a look at the finish line. Its all set up. Up there, you have the media folks getting their good vantage point. You have volunteers and you have people lining this area. Across the street, thats the official area. Thats the only reason that area is not packed in with people. As far as the runners, they checked in about a mile away at the Boston Commons area. We were there earlier. What they did there, they had everyone bring in their gear, jackets, they were in clear plastic bags. They checked those in and boarded buses over to the start line, of course, 26 miles away. That was about a 30minute ride on a bus. Lets talk about security. Theres been a lot of security that weve seen. We did a walk to the finish line on boylston which was about a mile walk for us. We did see several security checkpoints, they had to check our backpacks and they put a tag on them saying they were inspected. As you said, right now, elite runners are on the course. One of them is a bay area woman who says normally, she would be all concerned about time but this race is different and she says time doesnt actually matter. I dont think that people look at this as being obviously, its devastating. Instead of people turning away and not coming and not running. They are coming full force and full power to be part of the day. I think its strengthened the support. Its strengthened peoples commitment to this race. Its gonna be really exciting to see the faces on people when they cross the finish line. Obviously weve lost our connection with Claudine Wong, which she is at the finish line at the Boston Marathon. We also want to let you know that local runners are facing in next support of the Boston Marathon. The run was scheduled to start at 7 00 at the Ferry Building at the foot of market street. It will cover a fourmile loop around the embarcadero at aquatic park and then back to the Ferry Building. You did not have to register to do the run and runners were encouraged to wear bostons colors of bright blue and yellow. All right, tori. Some People Living in a san jose trailer park could soon become millionaires. Last week a civil jury awarded 110 million to some People Living at the trailer park on snell avenue. Five years ago, dozens of residents of the california hawaiian Mobile Estates sued the owners. They claim they had to put up with sewage backup, potholes, electrical blackouts and several other problems. If that jury verdict stands, 61 tenants could end up with 1. 6 million apiece. This morning south koreas president is calling the actions of the crew of the sunken ferry murderous. The death toll has risen to 86 with about 220 still missing. The president says the crews actions are unforgivable. Newly released video shows the captain getting medical treatment shortly after reaching the shore. The captain initially told passengers to stay in their rooms and waited more than half an hour to issue an evacuation order. A radio transcript released by authorities suggest that passengers on the ship could not reach lifeboats to escape because the ship tilted so quickly. Crews are holding out hope they will find passengers alive in air pockets in the sunken ship as they continue their search efforts this morning. Most of the people on board were High School Students. And families of those missing passengers are pleading with the government to strengthen its search efforts. The families are currently staying at a gymnasium on the southern western tip of korea near where the ferry went down. The government has set up a big screen to broadcast live updates from the search mission. 7 15. Two men are in custody for two separate stabbing attacks on nurses at l. A. County hospitals. In the first attack yesterday morning, Authorities Say a man bypassed security at one hospital and stabbed a nurse several times. Shes in Critical Condition. In the Second Attack at a different Hospital Police say a man grabbed a nurse from behind and stabbed her in the ear. Her injuries were not life threatening. It has been 15 years now since the shooting at Columbine High School in colorado. Yesterday, a memorial was held near in littleton, colorado, remembering the students and one teacher killed when two students went on a shooting rampage before they killed themselves. Survivors and family members attended the event. People came from as far away from here as from here as california to pay their respects. Obviously, you know, 15 years ago is a long time, but we do remember when this happened. It was a big story in los angeles. Im i can imagine how big of a story it was here. The daughter of the teacher who was killed read the names of each of the shooting victims as her daughter rang a bell in their memory. Police are searching for a man who escaped officers while dragging one of them with his car. Police responded to a report of a suspicious person around 12 30 yesterday afternoon at 18th and castro streets. When the man spotted officers, police say he jumped into a car and sped away dragging an officer. That officer declined medical treatment at the scene. A San Leandro High School teacher accused of having sex with a teenager is due in court this week. 27yearold leon chang surrendered to authorities after prosecutors charged him with statutory rape. Investigators did not say whether his alleged victim was a current student or if the student ever attended san leandro high. The city of oakland according to a new report will be able to pay for 300 new Police Officers if the pension cost did not more than double in the last ten years. The city paid 37 million in the state Pension System in 2003. But two years ago, that number jumped to 89 million. The city auditor is recommending that city leaders work with Union Officials and pension experts to come up with a way to Fund Pensions that wont end up bankrupting the city of oakland. 7 18. We want to check in with sal and see whats going on. Traffic may be picked up after the easter holiday. I remember from my Catholic School days. Some schools have the break after easter. Some schools have spring break before, whatever they call it. The two weeks leading up to the Easter Sunday are going to see a little bit of lighter than usual conditions. Lets take a look. Highway 24 looks okay as you drive. This looks normal traffic coming up to the 24 interchange with the bay bridge. There are no major problems by the way if you are driving to the tunnel. This drive time is about 15 minutes between 24 interchange and the tunnel. Bay bridge toll plaza now the traffic here is moderately avenue, 30minute delay. This looks like a normal commute. Lets go to the maps where it looks lighter than usual. Southbound 880 you can see traffic is slow, dont get me wrong. Its slow but its not sometimes we draw this line. Its all red to fremont and mountain view. So your drive time would be about normally about 35 minutes is about 20. Lets go to steve. We have some sun. A little cloud mix. System coming in. Cold front. I say cool front, actually, because its not that cold. But it will drop the temperatures and start a dooling trend into tomorrow. Temperatures drop about 10 degrees today and about five, ten more tomorrow. Yesterday, a lot of 80s or 70s. Tomorrow probably more 60s and very, very 70s. Had the warm area of High Pressure over us. Its transitory, it changes today. Cooling begins. Clouds begin to move in. Much cooler. We start that today and it drops on tuesday. Kind of levels off a little bit. Looks like a cooler week as well. Mix of sun and clouds. Any rain will be very, very light. Wont be until this evening. Even that looks like not that much. Temperatures on the way down. Some clouds already to the north. This system doesnt have much to go. This will give us a cloudy pattern. 48 in reno. 49 ukiah and the same for monterey. There is a little enhancement taking place on the back side. A little low is forming. Also hold it together, which should give us a tiny bit of rain. A drumthe cooler pattern begins today. Some light rain tonight. But 60s and 70s. This will probably be the warmest day of the workweek, thats for sure. I dont see any 70s or upper 70s or 80s like we had yesterday on the next four, five days. 60s, 70s for many. Children are still getting medications with codeine in him at hospitals despite safety concerns. A study being released this morning says 500,000 children are getting co every year. Theres new evidence that childrens body process the narcotic in many ways. For a small number of children that process can be deadly. For one third of young patients, codeine offers no pain relief.
