welcome to mornings on 2. it's saturday, january 11th. >> let's get a check of the weather with rosemary. good morning. >> good morning. it's a cloudy start. we have wet weather on the way. giving you a look here another where that front resides at moment over the north corner of california. if i slide in over parts of the north bay you can see we are mainly dry. we have cloudy conditions, even fog reported. this is going to be moving through. right now i'm pinging up ping -- i'm picking up just a few returns. as we get into saturday this is going to slide south the north bay will get it first and then it'll progress through the day. i will timeline had for you, show you when the best possibility will be to get wet and your numbers for today. how much rain i expect and some snow for the sierra. ly have information on that coming up. >> and we start with developing news from san jose this morning where suspected arsonist may have struck again. we are live in the downtown neighborhood where crews have been busy putting out fires. >> reporter: for the most part this fire is out though you can see a lot of san jose firefighters still out on the scene. they have their ladder truck in front of this 100 year old home. they are shooting water down into it to put out the hot spots and there is still a little bit of smoke from the roof. this fire started around 4:30 this morning and san jose firefighters believe this is the work of a serial arsonist. at that's worst it was a two alarm fire and was quite challenging because as they put the fire out the roof collapsed. there were some power lines and live wires in the area that were also affected as they were putting out the fire. this is the home of an elderly couple who lived here for decades. their neighbors fortunately saw the fire early this morning, they were able to alert the couple, wake them up, get them out. they got out unhurt and so did their pet cat. investigators are concerned. there have been 11 suspected arson fires in the downtown area since wednesday. >> major problem. we have been lucky so far. actually we -- the residents of san jose have been lucky that nobody was hurt. you know or nobody has died. >> reporter: now later today firefighters will be announcing a ten thousand dollar reward for information leading to the arrest of that arsonist. investigators are on the scene here but the captain said so far they haven't found evidence yet of an accelerant used but believe its arson because it started on the outside of the home and it's in the same area where the other ten suspicious fires have happened since wednesday. they believe it's the work of the same arsonist and later today they will announce a reward for information leading to the arsonist's arrest. live in san jose. k. >> the bodies of two people were found inside a burning home in palo palo alto. firefighters were called to the home around 7:15 last night. witnesses describe seeing flames 20 feet in the air and authorities aren't releasing the victim's identities where where the bodies were found or how they died but they say they believe they know where the fire started. >> at this point we have no indication what the cause or origon of the fire the fire department did tell us i should add that they believe pleiomery that the fire started in the kitchen of the residence. >> investigators say they will return to the scene today because it is a deadly fire. as standard procedure the arson task force will investigate along with palo alto police and fire. the fire in walnut creek claimed the life of a man in his 60s. the home caught fire around 9:30 last night. it took about 30 minute its to knock it down. the body of the victim was located on the second floor a woman who was also in the house was able to escape a former neighbor said that the couple living in the home a loving people who take in dogs and people who have no place to live. >> new this morning a pedestrian was killed in a hit and run in san jose. it happened just before midnight on the jackson avenue on-ramp to interstate 680. the chp said the victim was walking southbound on the right shoulder of that ramp when he was hit. after that initial collision, a passing taxi then struck the victim. the cab driver stopped and called for help. the pedestrian was declared dead at the scene. his name has not been released and it's not clear why he was on the ramp and there is no description of the first vehicle that hit him. also new, police in san jose are investigating the latest homicide. that happened sometime before 2:30 this morning. police say when they arrived they found the body of the male victim on the corner. the victim had been stabbed to death. so far there is no word on why the victim -- who may have been targeted or who was behind the stabbing. anyone with information is asked to call police. >> 11 people in the bay area have died from the flu and now the father of one of the youngest victims hopes the public will learn from his son's death. >> get your flu shots because it's attacking young people. more -- more so than they expected. >> cliff walker is still to shaken to appear on camera but he said he believes his 23-year- old son matthew was more at risk to getting sick because he had a busy work and social life and his overall health was run down. >> if you demand that much from your body you have to take some care of it. young people tend not to think about that. >> matthew walker's father said his son was first diagnosed with food in santa rosa the day after christmas but was sent home to recover. he returned by ambulance the next day unable to breathe. he had cardiac arrest and was in a coma for two weeks. doctors don't believe the flu will match the 2009 pandemic which killed more than 600 in california. so far there are about 3 dozen deaths statewide, possibly due to the flu because the strain is contagious and deadly health officials in the bay area, even people who got stick are warning everybody to take precautions. >> i couldn't get out of bed. like you get hit by a truck. that's what it felt like. >> the hospital said it has giverren out more than 1.2 million flu shots but the high demand means shortages in some spots, they and walgreens are redirecting people to other clinics but they expect to have more vaccines next week. county clinics like the one in concord are also reporting a dramatic jump in the number of people asking for flu shots, many are bringing in their children and doctors are focusing that you cannot get the flu from a flu shot. go to the website for a list of resources in the bay area to help you fight the flu, included is a map of where you can get vaccines, just look for that hot topics section. >> concord police have taken a couple of people in custody in connection with a shooting at a wendy's. they say there was a physical confrontation between a group of men at the restaurant on monument boulevard around six. when the victim went outside one of the suspects shot him and then fled. we are told that officers then tracked the suspects to a nearby home where they made a couple of arrests a short time later. >> i heard all the noise inside the house and people were coming out, screaming, yelling, they why saying a lot of bad words, really angry. >> the shooting victim was rushed to the hospital with life threatening injuries. police aren't talking right now about what led or might have led to that dispute. several hours earlier one person was hurt in a shooting in north concord. that happened just after 3:30 afternoon. the victim was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. both cases active but there is no evidence that they are related. >> you heard rosemary mention it at the top of the newscast. rain making its way here into northern california and slowly going south toward the bay area. >> yeah. it's a far cry from what we need but enough to get us wet and it's saturday. i definitely want to make you aware of it. scattered showers in the forecast for today and i will time it out for you in just a moment. first a beautiful look at the sun coming up. you can see the mix of clouds already in place. low clouds, a mix of high clouds, little bit of fog. this shot -- looking from san jose. what a beautiful one. san jose just a few light showers, a possibility for you. into the afternoon, there is the front. again moving through northern california, crescent city reporting light rain at times but that's been about it so far. if we get in closer to the bay area showed you this at the top of the hour we are pretty much dry. we just have cloudy conditions overhead, the rain still, at least 38 miles out. just a few returns but mostly dry. the system will move through, let me show you exactly what i'm talking about. waking up with the clouds this morning as we get into the 10:00 hour, notice over the north bay. this is where we will see most the rainfall because as it begins to sweep farther south it breaks apart by about 11:00, noontime, it's across the central bay, across i-80, the golden gate bridge. across the peninsula. for lunch a few scattered showers but notice it's already falling apart. the inner east bay. mostly cloudy. then by one or so its sliding in to the south bay a few scattered showers, the higher elevation, san jose, a few poti showers and then as we move farther south it conditions to dwindle. santa cruz, mainly dry, maybe just a few scattered showers, but this is what we will be for today. cloudy, cool the possibility of light rain. two tenths to maybe a quarter inch much over parts of the north bay and then into saturday evening we will dry out and be dry for sunday. now with all the clouds in place we are warmer this morning. 41 degrees reported in santa rose a.52 in san francisco, 53 oakland. mid40s concord and outside the door san jose you are checking in about 45. into the afternoon, cloudy and cool. mid to upper 50s in the forecast for the north bay. 56 for oakland today. mid50s san francisco. into the santa clara valley, upper 50s to near 60. morgan hill will hit 60. the extended forecast here -- always in view. scattered showers in the forecast for today. light in passing as we get into sunday we are drying out partly cloudy, slightly warmer and then a big warm upcoming your way, monday, tuesday and into wednesday, back into the upper 60's with mostly sunny skies, if you are going to the sierra it'll be snowy, windy there today. i will have that forecast for you coming up. >> thank you. later today saint mary's will announce its plans to build a new performance center for its student athletes. the project is expected to get started next spring. 500 more seats will be added to the pavilion that currently holds 3500 and a new performance center will include a weight room, training and on site sports medicine center. it'll be announced during half time at the home game today marriages in utah. right now they have been suspended while the decision to allow them is pealed. the state has said it'll not recognize the marriages that have already been preformed. yesterday the past two weeks more than a thousand couples applied and got marriage licenses but now they say plans for a certify machiney are on hold. >> the president is calling 2014 a year of action. >> with congress or on my own and with everybody willing to play their part. that action should begin by extending unemployment insurance for american who are laid off in the recession through no fault of their own. >> economists say they were disappointed yesterday with the jobs report that shows the country added 74,000 jobs last month, the fewest in three years. the president said that the success of the country depends on the success of the economy and the ability of the american people to make ends meet and provide for their families. richmond could soon offer the highest minimum wage in the area. on tuesday the city council will discuss three different proposed rates ranging between 11 and $15 an hour. if the city council decides to put it on the november ballot voter also have the chance to vote on the increase, right now san francisco has the highest minimum wage at $10.74 an hour. the state's minute membership wage is $8 an hour. >> foster farms has been given the green light to resume operations at a plant that was shut down this week because of cockroaches. it's in livingston south of modesto. the agriculture department shut it down on wednesday. the company had a deep cleaning operation after inspectors found the insects. now that they have an action plan it can reopen today. it's their largest facility. luxury department store neiman marcus said its customer information has been hacked. they said debit and credit card information may have been compromised but they don't know how widespread the problem is at this point. they say that the security breach happened in mid- december. so far only shoppers who use their cards in stores seem to be affected, not people who bought online. the security breach at target is much worse than thought. the retailer estimates that the number of victims at 70 to 110 million. they had first disclosed last month that the credit and deb aid cards of 40 million were affected by the breach but an investigation into the theft exposed more victims and revealed other private information was also taken including names, phone numbers and e-mail addresses. >> phishing e-mail that will say they are from target and try to get financial information. >> target is offering free credit monitoring to all of its customers but experts say it's a thin layer of protection that won't stop identity theft. >> gm is a nounsing it's recalling about 370,000 trucks because they could catch fire. the recall includes 2014silv era dos and gmc full sized truck. they said the vehicles have software problems that could can lead to over heating and fires. they said they are confirmed eight such fires but no injuries involved in those fires. they said it'll fix the problem for free starting next week. tesla said its taking steps to prevent over heating of its car's charging system. they said they are sending customers upgraded wall adaptors. they said that should address the problem. several drivers of the model s have reported over heating smoking. san francisco's ride sharing program uber is cutting down the price of its service but not for long. the company has dropped its base rate to 3-dollar plus $1.50 per mile. the ceo said it's an attempt to increase market share but according to an e-mail sent out to company drivers the lower prices could be gone with in a few weeks. the company said that lower evacuates have sacrificed almost all of its revenue in san francisco. >> yelp could soon disclose the identities of several reviewers. the business owner of a carpet cleaning service in virginia is claiming seven negative reviews weren't written by real customers. an appeals court in virginia has ruled the identities of those reviewers must be released to determine if the claims are true. >> there is something to be said about being anonymous and protecting yourself and having the right to say or criticize like this is that side but there is always the liable side. are these people actually customers? >> yelp released a statement saying it didn't believe the ruling would affect other states . bart riders may get an eyeful tomorrow a group is asking people to take the train with no pants. it'll be the [ male announcer ] subway. eat fresh. new developments around a string of arson fires in san jose. the latest target overnight and why concern in that area is growing. good morning. welcome back . >> it's a developing story that we have been following since yesterday's morning news a suspected arsonist loose in downtown san jose a church, a business and several homes all damaged and now this morning a century old house. we are live at the scene of the latest suspicious fire. >> reporter: this house is on east saint john and north 17th street in the downtown san jose area. firefighters have been here since 4:30 and are still out here. they are still putting water, trying to get some of the hot spots out. the fire is out but there are still hot spots they are trying to fights and you can see the ladder truck. some of the firefighters walking on the ladder truck and they are positioning their hoses above what is -- what was the roof. the roof collapsed during the fire. if we pan off to the right you can see some of the water flowing out of the home in the front porch area. nobody was hurt. that's the good news but fire investigators are concerned because they suspect this fire was the work of an sore. an arsonist. this is the 11th fire since wednesday. it started around 4:30. that's when firefighters got the call. at one point it became a two alarm fire after the roof of the building collapsed a couple in their 70s lives in the century old home and firefighters say it wasn't their smoke alarm that alerted them about this fire but their neighbors who saw the fire, went up, banged on the door, woke the couple up so they were able to escape the fire unharmed. >> we immediatey knew it was an older couple. we just rushed up. >> see if they were savior not. the house was really old. it was like any moment it may cause the entire --. >> >> reporter: firefighters will announce later today a 10,000 dollar reward for information leading to the arrest of the arsonist. investigators are on the scene. the fire captain said they haven't found evidence of accelerant used but they know this fire started on the outside of the home. they have ruled out the possibility of this being electrical. again because of where this fire happened, this location is the same neighborhood more or less where the other fires have happened. that is why they believe its arson. again, later this afternoon they will announce a 10,000- dollar reward for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible. >> and here a look at other top stories. main in his 60's died in a house fire at walnut creek. it happened on hilltop crescent a woman inside managed to escape. and the bodies of two were found in a burping house in palo alto. investigators aren't commenting about the cause of death but they say the fire started in the kitchen about 7:15 last night. there is no word on what may have started either house fire. and at least 11 people in the bay area have died from the flu. the father of a 23-year-old victim said his son's death proof that everybody should get the flu shot no matter their age. the growing demand for the shot has created a shortage at some clinics. >> police in campbell are looking for a man who allegedly assaulted a woman walking home. it happened early thursday morning at about 12:30. the victim, a woman in her 30s had just left a 7-1 when a man grabbed her and started to sexually assault her. the man pulled out a gun and threatened her but she fought back. >> she was able to burn the suspect on the left side of his face with a cigarette she had. >> police say the victim broke free from the suspect and flagged down a car passing by as the man ran. he is an african american male in his mid to late 30s, six feet tall, with a heavy pound, weighing about 250 to 300- pound. >> police are releasing video in hopes of identitying a driver involved in a hit and run a video is from december 31st december 31st. police say it shows a white van hitting a woman. officers say the woman was forced in to the van's path after first being hit by another vehicle. >> we are hoping someone in the public may have information on the where abouts of the driver and of the van and if they do contact san francisco police. >> the two individuals in the vehicle that hit the woman before the van did have been identified and are facing charges the victim had serious injuries but is recovering. >> police many oakland are trying to find if a street race led to a crash that killed a teen girl and injured another the coroner has identified its girl who died as a 17-year-old katelyn benson. they say that the car she was in hit a pole shortly after midnight a witness said that several people tried to jump in and help. >> it was smashed. it was pretty bad. it was a pretty bad accident. car was still running. they didn't want it to blow up a lot of people, you know, broke in, opened the hood, just took a spark plug wire off so the car could shut off. >> another 17-year-old who was a passenger in the car is in the hospital with critical injuries. >> we have been in the steady dry pattern for the last few weeks if not longer. let's turn to rosemary because change is on the way. >> clouds this morning. we are warmer but in to the afternoon we will see a flip and temperatures will be on the cool side with cloudy conditions and eventually some rain a look there a sweeping view of downtown oakland you can see the mix of clouds, low clouds, midand high level, patchy fog reported, visibility a bit compromised for some. santa rosa reporting patchy fog. you can see it's a very gray start. we are mainly dry. we will be dry for the next couple of hours and then the rain will move our way. you can see it north of us, some areas right around -- picking up returns but have you to get farther north to see the light rain. we are with plenty of gray and dry conditions. i will back this way up and show you the center of circulation off the coast there. west of washington and you can see how the front sweeps through washington, oregon and now into northern california. as this moves our way, it'll begin to fizzle out just a little wit. areas over the north bay will get the best opportunity of scattered rain and as it slides south it starts to die out. ly show you what i mean. watch your neighborhood. here we are this morning as we get in too nine, ten, it starts to shift over santa rosa, into areas near marin. into 11, 12 it starts to slide in to the central bayh long i- 80, martinez, richmond getting light scattered showers along the pen slam this is lunchtime. san jose is still dry. into one or so it's now shifting into the south bay. look at how it falls apart. we have a few scattered showers reports over. perhaps over areas like mount hamilton. maybe a few sprinkles over santa cruz, by late afternoon, by dinner time we are drying out. notice the few scattered showers in the north bay. it's mostly cloudy. you could see a few lingering showers in to the evening hours but most of us will be dry and that's it. we are done. 41 degrees in santa rose a53 in oakland. low 40s concord. mid40s for san jose and again into the afternoon. we will be cooler, right about where we should be. 56 in santa rosa this afternoon. 55 for san francisco, 56 oakland. upper 50s haywood. into the south bay temperatures in the upper 50s for most 59 san jose, 60 degrees morgan hill and gilroy a look at your bay area weekend, always in view showing you we are partly cloudy for tomorrow, we are dry, slightly warmer, we could wake up with that patchy fog, we will have moisture in place at that point. monday, tuesday, wednesday, a big warm up, back in the forecast, upper 60s for the afternoon. all the way through midweek wednesday with dry conditions. i will have a look at how much rain i expect we will get out of the system moving through today. >> the 49ers prepare for tomorrow's game. the medical staff is making sure players are ready to go. while they are in top physical shape they are not immune to the flu or common cold. according to the mercury news the first sign of a cough or sniffl some are grabbing vitamin c. they are also encouraged to take a lot of hot showers and drink a lot of liquid a team of doctors went to the practice facility last month back. >> reporter: this is how the postseason works when you are a wild card team. the division winning panthers get a bye, a week to rest and heal up. after a tough win in frigid green bay on sunday the wild card 49ers will play their second straight postseason game on the road. that shouldn't bother them though. in three year its under jim harbaugh they are tied for best road record in the family members on board when it vanished on december first. search teams say there are no survivors and a severe storm may be day recovery. in a statement posted online smith's wife wrote the plane is in pieces and buried in snow. they have not yet found all the parts. however, we do know my family on the plane died quickly and paynelessly. >> a dedication to honor a vallejo police officer killed in the line of duty a section of highway 37 is now named after him. he was shot and killed while chasing a suspected bank robber in 2011. vallejo police and residents raised $6,000 for a new road sign. another officer said that the officer's courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten. a judge is considering a lawsuit filed by the mother of a girl who remains were found at the bottom of a well linked to the speed freak killers case. she claims the sheriff mishandled the remains of her daughter with heavy equipment when they were found at the bottom of the well. her daughter was 16 when she vanished in 1985. two years ago a death row inmate lead investigators to the remains of five victims. >> a man is now in custody on suspicious of abusing and killing a puppy in front of his 4-year-old daughter. police say for the past several weeks the 31-year-old had been abusing the puppy. they say that he finally killed it on monday and threw it in a dumpster. he has been charged with felony cruelty as well as child endangerment. a former marine in new hampshire is back with his dog because of a determined vet and a community a week before christmas molly was hit by a snow plow. she had four broken legs and her owner brought letter to -- her to the vet and left her thinking she bo have to be put down. the vet was able to save her and now she is going home. >> all of us will uc davis shows smoke from wildfires could impact your health even more so than they first thought. the study looked at wildfire exposure in monkeys and found those who breathed in the smoke were more at risk to serious deceases diseases. it was done back in 2008. wildfire smoke can also cause higher ozone levels which are linked to asthma, lower birth rates and heart problems. >> gold hunters are being drawn to the edge of the american river. low water levels have exposed rocky river beds that haven't been seen since the early 90s. this past monday the water manager's limited the river's flow by more than half. they say it's to try to keep as much water as possible stored behind the dam. the river has since dropped about eight inches, retreating the river's edge 20 to 30 feet in some locations. >> some inmates at the san francisco county jail are now high school graduates. yesterday 32 inmates put on caps and gowns and got their high school diploma. they all took part in the only firefighters are still at the scene of another suspicious fire a century old home caught fire just before 43:30. this is a live picture of the house from our camera on top of the live truck at the scene. you can see forts and trucks still there at the scene investigating. this home is located ono east saint john and 17th street in the town town area. flames and smoke brought own that roof this morning. it's believed it was the 11th suspicious fire started by a suspected arsonist in the neighborhood since wednesday. they had the potential to kill or seriously injury innocent people. >> the major problem. we have been lucky so far. actually we -- the residents of san jose have been lucky that nobody has been injured, you know or -- nobody has died. >> an elderly couple in their 70e was able to escape safely. neighbors who spotted the flames banged on their door to get them out. ktvu obtained this video showing one of the other suspicious fires being set. it shows a suspect walking up to a home on 28th and san antonio street a fire erupts secs later a passing driver saw the flames and ran to the door to warn the people inside. at noon a firefighter's union will announce a ten thousand dollar reward to help them find the suspected fire bug. >> the bodies of two were found inside a burning house in palo alto. firefighters were called to the home on the 900 block around 715 last night. witnesses describe seeing flames 20 feet in the air. authorities aren't releasing the victim's identities identities. however investigators say they do believe they know where that fire started. >> at this point we have no indication what the cause or origon of the fire was. the fire department did tell us i should add that they believe pleiomery that the fire started in the kitchen of the residence. >> investigators are going back to the scene today because it is a deadly fire as standard procedure. the arson task force will investigate along with the police and fire department. a house fire in walnut [inaudible] a home caught fire around 9:30 last night. it took firefighters about 30 minutes to knock it down. the body of the victim was found on the second floor. the woman who was in the house escaped safely a former neighbor said the couple live in the home are loving people who look in dogs dogs and people with no place to live. >> 11 people have died of the in the area and the father of one hopes the public will learn. >> get the flu shot. it's attacking young people more than they expected. >> reporter: cliff walker is still so shaken to appear on camera. he said he believes his 23-year- old son matthew was more at risk to the flu and other alcoholly indications because he -- complications because he had a busy social life and his health was run down. he went to the hospital but was released. he return by ambulance unable to breathe and went into cardiac arrest. the two most recent deaths in the bay area came from alameda county, here is a map suing where showing where the deaths happened. there are three inial media and one each in sonoma, san francisco, and san mateo. these are only people who are 6a or younger. the state doesn't track deaths of people older than the age of 65. we spoke to health officials to get perspective of how you how this season compares to 2009. >> reporter: in a day whether it's a handrail, or the seats and handles of on a bus or the door of your favorite restaurant or cafe your hands are just one degree of separation from hundreds of other people who could be sick with the flu. >> couldn't get out of bed. like than the other strain. >> reporter: according to the cdc activity has increased as reports of widespread flu in 25 states two weeks ago jumped to 35 states last week. in 2009, 607 people in california tied in died in the pandemic. this morning 35 possible deaths have been reported so far. this likely will not reach the 2009 pandemic size. >> it was brand new to the world. it was a newcombe identification of different kinds of viruses so nobody had any immunity to it. it hit hard and hit everybody. >> reporter: nobody knows when the flu season will peak and officials are urging everybody to get a flu shot. today this family was going in for the flu vaccine and taking extra precautions in public. >> teaching them to wash their hands more, to be really caution about washing their hands. a detective to help find him. he is 5'10'' if weighs between 150 and 170 pounds. he has brown hair and brown eyes and the number 42 tattooed on his throat. he was last seen wearing a hooded sweatshirt. anyone with information is asked to call the police. >> new, a pedestrian was killed in a hit and run in san jose. that happened just before midnight on the jackson avenue on-ramp. the chp said the victim was walking southbound on the right shoulder of the ramp when he was hit by a vehicle. the driver did not stop. the victim was then hit by a taxi but that cab driver stopped and called for help the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. his name has not been released and it's unclear why he was on the ramp. also, police in san jose are investigating the latest homicide. that happened before 2:30 this morning. police found the body of the male victim on the corner of a street. he had been stabbed. no word on motive or suspect and anyone with information is asked to call police. >> police are investigating a shooting outside of a wendy's restaurant. there was a physical confrontation between a group of men when when the victim went outside police say the gunman shot him and then fled. the victim was transported to the hospital with life threatening injuries. police are not commenting on what specifically may have led to that dispute. >> i was driving in today different proposed rates, ranging between 11 and $15 an hour. if the city council decides to put the measure on the november ballot they will have the chance to vote on the increase. right now san francisco has the highest minimum wage at $10.75. the state's minimum wage is at $8 an hour. >> foster farms has been given the green light to resume operations at a plant that was shut down this week because of cockro aches. they had a dope cleaning operation after inspectors found them. now that they have an action plan officialses say it can reopen today. the plant is their largest facility. luxury department star neiman marcus said their customer information has been hacked. they said credit and debit card information may be compromised but officials don't know how widespread the problem is. they say that the security breach happened in mid- december. so far, only shopper who use their cards in stores seem to be affected. it is not affecting people who bought online. the security breach at target is much worse than first thought. the retailer now estimates that the number of victims at 70 to 110 million. target had first disclosed that the credit and debit cards of 40 million were affected. an investigation into the theft exposed more victims and revealed that other private information was also taken including names, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses. >> phishing e-mail that will say they are prosecute from target. >> target is offering free credit monitoring but expects say that is a thin layer of protection that normally will not stop identity theft. >> gm is a nounsing it's recalling about 370,000 trucks because they could catch fire. it includes 2014silv era doa. full sized trucks, gm said they have software problems that could lead to over heating fires. they said they have confirmed eight such fires, no injuries involved. gm said it'll fix the problem for free starting next week. bay area automaker tesla said its taking steps to prevent over heating of its electric car acharning system. they said they are sending customers upgraded wall adapters. they said that should address the problem. several drivers have reported over heating. san francisco's ride sharing program uber is cutting down the price of its service but not for long. the company has dropped its rate to $3 and $1.50 per mile. the ceo said the promotion is to try to increase market share but according to the he he e- mail sent out it could be gone in a few weeks. the company said the lower rates have sacrificed almost all of its revenue in san francisco. >> bart save the home that was built a century ago. the couple inside was able to escape safety because of the quick response of their neighbors. allie is live in downtown san jose where she talked to the people just a short time ago. >> reporter: the fire is out and there is just a few firefighters left here packing up some of their equipment. this fire happened between four and 4:30 this morning. fire septemberors are going to be on the scene for a while. this home is on east saint john and north 17th in the downtown san jose area the reason why investigators have a lot of work to do is they believe this fire is the work of a serial arsonist. this is new video we just got in from a neighbor showing flames shooting from the roof of the home a couple in their 70s live here. they were not hurt but the closest fire station is about a thousand feet away from this home. firefighters say that it was a jogger running through the neighborhood who was the first person to notice the flames, that jogger ran down to the fire station and rang the doorbell to alert firefighters about what was going on. the elderly couple who live in this home were saved by their next door neighbor. those neighbors we talked to a short time ago said they banged on the front door and came close to breaking the front window to warn the couple. >> we have to wake them up. it was -- it was fast. that -- the fire was just -- you know fast. we have to do whatever we can real fast. >> we are banging hard, like kicking. finally they opened and we got them out. that was the main thing. >> the elderly couple escaped unhurt with their pet cat and a few family photograph albums. this is the first suspicious fire in the downtown san jose area since wednesday that's why fire investigators will be out arrest of this serial arsonist. live in san jose, ktvu. >> san francisco police are releasing video in hopes of identitying a driver involved in a hit and run collision. this surveillance video is from december 31st and shows a white van hitting a female pedestrian. officers say the woman was forced in to the van's path after being hit by a different vehicle. >> rehopeing that someone may have information on the where abouts of the driver and of the van if they do please contact police anonymously. >> the two in the other vehicle that hit the woman first have been identified are facing charges. the victim is recovering recovering. we obtained this video showing the moment when is a 6- year-old was struck and killed by a car on new year's. you can see the suv disappear behind a sign and then back up. it appears to be when the girl was killed. the girl's mother and brother were also hurt. the driver of the van was working for the ride share service uber but didn't have a fare at the time. he is now facing a charge of manslaughter but is free on bail. >> as the san francisco 49ers prepare for tomorrow's playoffs the medical staff is making sure they are reddy to go. while they are in top physical shape they are not immune to the flu or cold. the first sign of a cough or sniffl some of them are grabbing vitamin c. they are also being told to take a lot of hot showers and drink a lot of liquid a team of doctors also went to the practice facility last month to give them flu shots. the san francisco 49ers are in north carolina this morning preparing for tomorrow's game with the panthers and joe is also there and he has more on what it'll take to win the game. >> reporter: the most traveled team in the nfl completed it's latest trip when the 49ers arrived in charlotte last night. their second strip in six days started a walk through at the practice facility. then it was load up the buses and head to the airport. in the past, when the 49ers had back to of lake county but still north of clear lake. you can see a few scattered shower this is morning, crescent city over the north end of california. let's time it out for you. picking it up at this hour where most of the rain still north of lake county. we get in to the next hour, 9:00. santa rosa reporting a few scattered source, maybe the northern edge of sonoma, the rest of us still dry. by ten, 11, now most the north bay seeing a few light scattered showers, this is the best possibility a steady light rain for the area. by lunchtime it's now sliding south of the golden gate. i-80, into areas like martinez, richmond, san francisco, even down along the peninsula, along the coastline perhaps into half moon bay, a few scattered showers, san jose its lunchtime and you are still dry. we get in to the second half of the arch. now it's shifting farther south. through the central bay, oakland, haywood and into san jose, it takes until about one or so before a few scattered showers, you can see from this model it's not going to be a lot. take a look at tahoe. going to get fresh snow and you will need the chainses if are you going that way for the weekend. right now with the cloudy conditions, 42 santa rosa, low 40s concord. upper 40s around san jose and for the afternoon, mid to upper 50s for most of us, a few 60s out there, areas like morgan hill, santa cruz expected to get to police in oakland trying to figure out if a street race led to a crash that killed one teen girl and injured another. the coroner identified the girl who died as 17-year-old katelyn benson from san she claim that the sheriff's department mishandled the remains of her daughter with heavy quinnment when -- equipment. her daughter was 16 when she disappeared in 1985 and then two years ago a death row inmate lead investigators to the remains of five people. >> because of a vet and a community a former marine has his dog back a week before christmas the dog was hit by a snow plow, and her owner rosemary orozco. >> yes, good morning to you. we have showers on the way, scattered showers arriving over parts of the coastline. here's a look at the system here. you can see the center of the circulation off the coast of washington. we've got some rain and snow, washington, oregon, northern california, and we eventually will begin to see this as well. i want to zoom in really close here and take a look at a few returns right along the northbound bay coastline, dillon beach. we will continue to see this moving inland. i'm seeing a few, just a few  bits of moisture over areas like guerneville. may not be hitting the ground yet, but this is what we'll see for the morning hours. increase in the rain coverage over parts of the north bay, sliding into the central bay for the afternoon, eventually into the south bay, where you have a slight possibility of a few showers. i'll line up the time line and have a look at the numbers, coming up. new this morning, a suspected arsonist may have struck again in downtown san jose. just a few hours ago, flames shot from the room of a century- old home. investigators say this is the 11th suspicious fire in the area since wednesday. ktvu's allie rasmus, joining us live from the scene, where firefighters say the situation could have been much worse. >> reporter: that's right. they think the people living in the home behind me were very fortunate to get out when they did. the fire has been out for a while. cleanup crews have arrived. they are in the process of boarding up this home here. this is a century-old victorian house on east st. john and north 17th street in the downtown san jose area. you can see it's heavily damaged and the roof completely collapsed during this fire. fire investigators are going to be out this morning, gathering evidence, because they believe this fire was the work of a serial arsonist. this is the video of the flames, provided to us from a neighbor around 4:30 this morning. this was a two-alarm fire. a couple in their seventies live in the home, but they did escape unharmed, thanks to nair next door neighbors. the neighbors noticed the flames outside, ran over and woke the elderly couple up. >> we had to get them out. they are kind of an older couple, so we got them out. >> reporter: again, investigators believe this fire was deliberately set and that makes this fire the 11th suspicious fire in the downtown san jose area since wednesday. san jose firefighters union will announce today a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of that serial arsonist. >> he's becoming more brazen. he has to know that there's video out there that has him in it. it clearly shows him, if it's him, or one of the individuals. if this is his fire, he's brazen enough to go ahead and do this fire around the same time, around the general area with a fire station a thousand feet down the street. >> reporter: this is the video he's referring to, surveillance video obtained by ktvu yesterday that shows the suspected arsonist walking up to a home at 28th and san antonio in san jose. that was just minutes before a fire started at that location. now, again, investigators believe this morning's fire has a lot of the same characteristics of the other suspicious fires that have happened in the downtown area recently. so firefighters are going to be offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of that serial arsonist. for now, the couple who lives here has been displaced. they have been put up by the red cross. they have been helped by the red cross. in the meantime, the cleanup crews are boarding up their home. live in san jose, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2news. the bodies of two people were found inside a burning house in palo alto. firefighters were called to the home on the 900 block of embarcadero road around 7:15 last night. witnesses describe seeing flames 20 feet in the area. authorities are not releasing the victims' identities or where their bodies were found. however, investigators believe they know where the fire started. >> at this point, we have no indication of what the cause or origin of the fire was. the fire department did tell us that they believe preliminarily that the fire began in the kitchen of the residence. >> investigators say they are going to go back to the scene today and because this is a deadly fire, standard procedure has the santa clara county arson task force investigating, along with both palo alto police and fire. the house fire in walnut creek claimed the life of a man in his sixties. the home caught fire around 9:30 last night. it took firefighters about 30 minutes to knock it down. the body of the victim was found on the second floor. a woman who was also in the house did escape safely. a former neighbor tells the walnut creek newspaper that the couple living in the house are loving people, who took in dogs and people who had no place to live. a pedestrian was hit and killed in san jose on the jackson avenue onramp to interstate 680. chp says the male victim was walking southbound around midnight last night when he was hit by a vehicle. the driver of the vehicle did not stop. the victim was then hit by a taxi cab, but the cab driver stopped and called for help. the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. his name has not been released. it is still unclear why he was walking on the ramp. new this morning, police in san jose are investigating the city's latest homicide. it happened sometime before 2:30 this morning. police found the body of a male victim on the corner of almondon road and stone court. police say he had been stabbed. so far, no word on a motive or suspect. anyone with information about this case is asked to call police. concord police are investigating a shooting outside a wendy's restaurant. officers say there was a physical confrontation between a group of men at the wendy's on monument boulevard around 6:00 last night. when the victim went outside, police say the gunman shot and killed him and then fled. the victim was transported to john mere hospital with life threatening injuries. police are not commenting on what may have specifically led to that dispute. time now, 9:06. by our count, 11 people in the bay area have died so far from the flu. now, the father of one of the youngest victims hopes the public will learn from his son's death. >> get your flu shots, because it is attacking young people more so than they expected. >> cliff walker was too shaken to appear on camera, but said he believes his 23-year-old son matthew was more susceptible to pneumonia and other complications because he had a busy work and social life and his overall health was run down. >> if you demand that much from your body, you have to take some care of it. and young people tend, tend not to think about that. >> matthew walker's father says his son was first diagnosed with flu and pneumonia at kaiser hospital in santa rosa the day after christmas, but he was sent home to recover. he returned by ambulance the next day, unable to breathe and he suffered cardiac arrest, then went into a coma for two weeks. doctors say they do not believe the flu season will match the 2009 pandemic, which killed more than 200 californians there. are three dozen deaths in california so far. health officials in the bay area are warning everyone to take precautions. >> i couldn't get out of bed. like, you get hit by a mack truck. that's what i felt like. >> kaiser permanente says it has given out more than 1.2 million flu shots. high demand means shortages in some spots. kaiser and walgreen's are redirecting people to other clinics. they expect to have more vaccines next week. county flu clinics, like the one located in concord you see there are also reporting a dramatic jump in the number of people asking for flu shots. many parents are bringing in their children to get vaccinated and doctors are the hot topics section. . it's a gloomy start there, a mix of low clouds, patchy fog, high clouds over our east bay hills, where we are mainly dry. but that's going to change. we have a few scattered showers in the forecast. i received a tweet from wilma, and she says we need bucketfuls! we're not going to get it though. a few hundredths in some areas, maybe quarter inch or so in lucky areas. off the coast of washington, we zoom in a little closer, the sierra will pick up snow. that's great news. you'll need your chains if you're headed in that direction because the snow level, you can see snow just now falling over areas of north tahoe, right about 6000 feet, the level right now, but dropping down to 4000 feet by tonight, which means you'll need chains. it's windy up there. the wind advisory for today as well. closer home, seeing a few scattered showers pop up over areas along the sonoma coastline. you can see dillon beach reporting some light rain there. as we shift inland, just a few patches of green over areas like oxidantal. earlier, over guerneville. may not be hitting the ground just yet, but eventually will make its way through the north bay and then slide to the central bay and the south bay will get it into the afternoon. we're going to time it out for you. here is the latest future cast model, picking up at 9:00. you can see just on the northern edge there of sonoma county, seeing some showers. as we get into 10:00, 11:00, it's going to slide farther south, down into marin. getting into the lunch hour, it's now south of i-80, along the golden gate, down along the coastline, into san francisco, oakland, perhaps richmond, el cerrito. into the noon time, 1:00, it's over the central bay. then 1:00 to 2:00, now into the south bay. notice as it gets to the south bay, really begins to fall apart. so a few scattered showers for you between 1:00 and 2:00, looks like the best possibility with the steady light rain over the north bay through the morning hours, then tapering off for the afternoon. a few one hundredths over parts of the south bay. parts of the north bay picking up maybe a tenth to two tenths and some of the wetter spots, maybe a quarter of an inch. cloudy conditions right now, widespread 40s. 46 for concord, 51 in oakland, 49 in san francisco, 44 for santa rosa. into the afternoon, temperatures on the cool side, but seasonal. [ male announcer ] subway. eat fresh. . good morning, concord. mostly cloudy skies out your door, 53, and scattered showers this afternoon. just a short time ago, vice president joe biden announced he will lead the american delegation to the memorial service of ariel sharon. sharon died this morning at the age of 85. he been in a coma since a debilitating stroke eight years ago. vital organs, including his kidneys started to fail this week, according to doctors. political analysts call sharon a controversial and iconic figure. they say he was a passionate advocate of israeli settlements in the west banc. a 22-year-old brazillian man is in jail, after threat sending a threatening e-mail about a flight. he is accused of targeting a january 8th tam airlines flight. police say he e mailed the airline and miami police saying, quote, flight must not take off. targeted. it will go down. retaliation. cargo is dangerous. be advised. police traced the e-mail and arrested the man. he is facing up to five years in prison and $25,000 fine. the justice department is now weighing in on the status of same-sex marriages in utah. right now, same-sex marriages in the state have been suspended while the decision to allow them is appealed. the state has already said it will not recognize the marriages that have already been performed. well, yesterday, the justice department announced that for federal purposes, it will honor those marriages. >> these families should not be asked to endure uncertainty regarding their status as the litigation unfolds. >> in the past few weeks, more than 1000 couples applied and got marriage licenses, but now those couples say plans for an actual ceremony are on hold. in this morning's weekly address, president obama is calling 2014 a year of action. >> with congress or on my own, and with everyone willing to play their part, that action should begin by extending unemployment insurance for americans who were laid off in the recession through no fault of their own. >> the country added 74,000 jobs last month, the fewest in three years. president obama says the success of the country depends on the success of the economy and the ability of the american people to make ends meet and provide for their families. well, the city of richmond could soon offer the highest minimum wage in the region. on tuesday, the city council will discuss three different proposed rates, ranging between $11 and $15 an hour. if the city council chooses to put the measure on the november ballot, voters will have the chance to vote on the increase. right now, san francisco has the highest minimum wage, at $10.74 an hour. the state's minimum wage is $8 an hour. well, foster farms has been given the green light to resume operations at a plant in the central valley that was shut down this week because of cockroaches. the plant is in livingston, south of modesto. the agriculture department shut it down on wednesday and then the company underwent a deep cleaning operation, after inspectors found cockroaches. now that foster farms has an action plan, officials say it can reopen today. the plant is foster farms' largest facility. luxury department store neiman marcus says its customer information has been hacked. they say customer debit card may be compromised. officials don't know how widespread the concern is. so far, only shoppers who qood their cards in stores seem to be affected, not people who bought items online. the security breach at target is much worse than originally shot. the retailer now estimates the number of victims at 70 to 110 million. target had first disclosed last month that the credit and debit cards of 40 million shoppers were affected by the breach. but an investigation into the theft exposed more victims and revealed that other private information was also taken, including names, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses. >> phishing e-mails that will purport to be from target and try to extract financial information from the recipients. >> target is offering free credit monitoring for all of its customers, but experts say that's a thin layer of protection that typically will not stop identity theft. target has apologized for the breach. shoppers can sign up for a year of credit monitoring. the service will include a free credit report. it also includes daily credit monitoring, plus identity theft insurance. mr. 's also access to personalized assistance. target says the sign-up period has been extended for three months, and more details will be released next week. well, san francisco's ride sharing program uebber is cutting down the price of its service, but not for long. the company has dropped its base rate to $3, plus $1.50 per mile. uber says it is an attempt to increase market share, but according to an e-mail sent to company drivers, the lower prices could be gone within a few weeks. the company says lower rates have sacrificed almost all of its revenue in san francisco. san francisco's yelp could soon be disclosing identities of several anonymous reviewers. the business owner of a carpet cleaning service in virginia is claiming seven negative reviews were not written by actual customers. an appeals court in virginia has now ruled the identities of those reviewers must be released to determine if their claims are true. >> there is something to be said about being anonymous and protecting yourself and having the right to say, or criticize. like there is that side. but there's also the libel side. are these people actually customers? >> you're right. it's been more than a month, claudine, since we've seen any rain in the bay area a few light showers in the forecast for today. it will be enough to actually get the roadways wet. so it could be a little slippery at times. let's get into the north bay and take a look at where we're seeing a few returns pop up at this time. it stretches from areas along the sonoma coastline, over inverness, and into areas around petaluma, the possibility here. you may not be seeing it yet, but eventually we will get a few scattered showers. getting closer between roanoke park and petaluma, scattered showers reported along the highway 101. also into the sierra, i'm seeing returns over parts of the sierra. if i zoom in a little closer, take a look at what's going on here. we have the white stuff, meaning snow returned over areas of donor summit, right about 7000 feet. truckee in the rain, at about 6000 feet. the snow level, very high at this point, but that's going to be changing over the course of the afternoon. by tonight, snow levels drop down to 4000 feet, which means you will need chains if you're going to the sierra for today. this forecast model showing you at 2:00 this afternoon, notice it's pretty widespread at this point. higher elevations could pick up anywhere from 6 to 8 inches, which is great news. of course we know we need a lot more, but we'll take what we can get. the extended forecast, with bay area weekend always in view, so over the north bay, we'll ride through this morning, into the central bay by afternoon. then the second half of the afternoon, through the south bay. i'll show you how much i expect we'll get coming up in just a little bit. we're dry by tomorrow. then a warming trend for next week. back to the desk. the search continues for a missing yahoo! programmer. what the company is now doing to help bring him home. >> and the san francisco 49ers are preparing to battle it out on the field for a trip to the nfc championship. we catch up with ktvu's joe fonzi with more on how the team is prepping for tomorrow's big game. people wake up to the news that their house is on fire. good morning, everyone. welcome back to mornings on 2. i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. a news conference is scheduled today to announce a $10,000 reward to help find the suspect the arsonist. the announcement will come just hours after the 11th suspicious fire in downtown san jose since wednesday. allie rasmus is live at the scene of the latest fire, where an elderly couple escaped unharmed, thanks to their neighbors. allie? >> reporter: well, claudine, the fire is out and firefighters are gone. but right now, this is the scene of a big cleanup taking place. there are cleanup crews who have arrived and are in the process of boarding up this home. but this is also a crime scene. fire investigators will be here gathering evidence because they believe this fire was the work of a serial arsonist. this is video from a neighbor, showing flames shooting from the roof of this century-old victorian home on east st. john and north 17th in the downtown san jose area. the fire started sometime between 4:00 and 4:30 this morning. a couple in their seventies live in this home. they were inside at the time the fire started, but they escaped unharmed, thanks to their next door neighbors. we spoke to the father and soon who work next door, who noticed the flames outside their neighbor's home. they ran over to wake the elderly couple up. when we talked to the father this morning, he became a little emotional when he thought of what might have happened, had he not stepped in. >> i feel good, though, yeah. they are my neighbors. >> reporter: again, investigators believe this fire was deliberately set and that makes this fire the 11th suspicious fire in the downtown san jose area since wednesday. san jose firefighters union is going to announce later today a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of that serial arsonist. >> we need the public's help on this. we need them to pay attention to anything. they may know who this person is. might be their neighbor, might be family member, might be someone they are acquainted with. that will help us. >> reporter: now, this is surveillance video obtained by ktvu yesterday that shows the suspected arsonist walking up to a home on 28th and san antonio, minutes before a fire broke out at that location earlier this week. investigators believe this morning's fire has a lot of the same characteristics of the other suspicious fires that have happened in this area recently, and that's why they are offering this reward, $10,000, for information. live in san jose, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2news. san francisco police are releasing surveillance video in hopes of identifying a driver involved in a hit and run collision. this surveillance video is from december 31st. police say it shows a white van hitting a female pedestrian ataturk and leavenworth. officers say the woman was forced into the van's path, after first being hit by another vehicle. >> we're hoping that someone in the public might have information on the whereabouts of the driver and of the van. if they do, please contact san francisco police anonymously. >> the two individuals in the vehicle that hit the woman before the van did have been identified and are facing charges. police say the victim suffered serious injuries, but is recovering. police in oakland are trying to figure out if a street race led to a crash that killed one teenage girl and injured another. the coroner's office identified the girl who died as 17-year- old caitlin benson from san jose. investigators say the car she was in slammed into a pole along maritime street at 7th, shortly after midnight friday morning. witnesses say several good samaritans tried to jump in and help. >> it was smashed. it was pretty bad. you know, it was a pretty bad accident. and the car was still running. they didn't want it to blow up. lot of people, you know, broke in, opened the hood, just took a spark plug wire off so the car could shut off. >> another 17-year-old girl who was a passenger in the car is in the hospital with critical injuries. police in campbell are looking for a man who allegedly assaulted a woman as she was walking home. it happened early thursday morning, about 12:30 a.m. police say the victim, a woman in her thirties, had just left a 7-eleven when a man grabbed her from behind and started to sexually assault her. officers say the man pulled out a handgun and threatened the woman, but she fought back. >> she was actually able to burn the suspect on the left side of his face with a cigarette that she had. >> police say the victim broke free and flagged down a car passing by as the man ran away. they released this sketch. he's described as african american, in his mid to late thirties, 6 feet tall with heavy build, weighing 250 to 300 pounds. the search continues for the 28-year-old yahoo! programmer who was reported missing on new year's day. yahoo! has even hired a private investigator to try to help find luke arduni. police say he is 5' 10, between 150 and 170 pounds, brown hair, brown eyes and the number 42 tattooed on his throat. he was last seen wearing a hooded sweatshirt and red converse sneakers. anyone with information is asked to call oakland police. starting out with a live look there, the overcast skies in san jose this all the way into vallejo, maybe looks like stretching into there, about 10:00, 11:00. getting into the lunch hour, it's now crossing over into the central bay. so san francisco, along the coastline, in and around venetia, martinez, fairfield here, and then getting into 12:30, 1:00 or so, stretching down into heyward, maybe fremont for you. by 1:00, now into the south bay. by 2:00, 3:00, it's out of here. getting into sunset at 5:00 this afternoon, we're partly cloudy. mostly cloudy over the north bay, but dry. that's pretty much all we'll see out of this system for today. the window of opportunity coming between 10:00 and 2:00, for most of us. how much rain are we going to see in the north bay will see more than the south bay, by far. we're talking 0.2 over the north bay. over the the desk. as the san francisco 49ers prepare for tomorrow's playoff game, the team's medical staff is making sure the players are ready to go. while they are in top physical shape, they are not immune to the flu or the common cold. according to the mercury news, at the first sign of a cough or even a sniffle, those players are grabbing vitamin c. players are also being encouraged to take lots of hot showers and drink plenty of liquids. a team of doctors from stanford also went to the 49ers' practice facility last month to give those players flu shots. on the eve of the big game, there's a possibility that the team could lose one of its coaches. espn is reporting defensive coordinator greg roman is interviewing with the minnesota vikings today for their vacant head coaching job. but he's not the only 49er the vikings are interested in. they will also be talking to defensive line coach jim tom seoul low today as well. both men will be interviewed in charlotte. at the same time the team is getting ready for tomorrow's big game with the panthers, joe fonzi is in charlotte and has more on what it's going to take to win this divisional game. >> reporter: the most traveled team in the nfl completed its latest journey, when the 49ers arrived in charlotte last night. their second cross-country trip in six days began with a walk- through at the team's santa clara practice facility. then it was load up the buses and head to the airport. in the past, when the 49ers had back-to-back trips in the east, they have spent the week in youngstown, ohio, to cut down on the season works when you're a wild card team. the division-winning carolina panthers get a bye, a week to rest and heal up. after a tough win in frigid green bay on sunday, the wild card 49ers will play [ male announcer ] soups so indulgent, you'll never believe they're light. 100-calorie progresso light soups. you'll never believe they're light. i'm detecting increasing levels of happiness. ...and the speed readings are off the chart! paradise found! luscious locks. great glittering galaxies. the happiest place on earth keeps getting happier! explore more, and save up to 25% on select nights at a disneyland resort hotel. there's no end in sight. i'm going to need more time. . a great start overbay point this morning. we're off to a dry start, but changes in the forecast a few sprinkles possible for early afternoon. time now, 9:44. let's recap some of the top stories this morning. investigators believe an arsonist struck in downtown san jose. a century-old victorian caught fire just before 4:30 this morning. neighbors assisted in safely getting out the older couple that lived there. at noon today, firefighters will announce a $10,000 reward to help find that arsonist. the santa clara county arson task force, along with the palo alto fire and police departments will investigate the circumstances surrounding a house fire on embarcadero road. the bodies of two people were found in the home. their identities have not been released or how they died. authorities are not saying if that fire is suspicious. they say it is customary to bring in the arson task force to investigate any deadly fires. at least 11 people in the bay area have now died from the flu this season. the father of a 23-year-old victim says his son's death is proof that everyone should get vaccinated, no matter their age. with the growing demand for vaccinations, there are flu shot shortages at some clinics and pharmacies. well, after weeks of searching, the wreckage of a plane belonging to a family from san jose has finally been found. san jose's software engineer dale smith was piloting the plane with four of his family members on board when it vanished back on december 1st. search teams say there are no survivors and a severe storm may delay recovery efforts. in a statement posted online, smith's wife wrote the plane is in pieces and buried in the snow. they have not yet found all the parts. however, we do know my family members on the plane died quickly and painlessly. well, ufc middle weight fighter and bay area native will be holding a fund-raiser to support the survivors of typhoon haiyan. mark nunoz will host the event t has been more than a month since typhoon haiyan devastated the philippines. about 6000 lives were lost in the typhoon. nearly 1800 people are still missing. a new study out of uc davis shows smoke from wildfires could impact your health. the study looked at wildfire exposure in monkies and found those who breathed in the smoke were more vulnerable to serious diseases. the study was done in 2008. wildfire smoke can cause higher ozone levels, which are linked to asthma, lower birth rates, and heart problems. we're now learning where whitey buller bulger is being held. he is at a high security area in tucson, arizona, part of a larger facility that holds 1700 inmates. bulger is serving two life sentences, plus five years. it is not clear whether he will serve that entire sentence in arizona. a dedication to honor a vallejo police officer killed in the line of duty. a section of highway 37 has now named the james kapu memorial highway. he was shot and killed while chasing a suspected bank robber in 2011. vallejo police and residents raised $6000 for a new road sign. a fellow officer says kapu's courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten. a federal judge is considering a lawsuit filed by the mother of a girl whose remains were found at the bottom of a well, linked to the so-called speed freak killers. joan shelly claims the san joaquin county sheriff's department mishandled the remains of her daughter with heavy equipment, when they were found at the bottom of the well in 2012. her daughter, joanne hobson, was 16 when she vanished in 1985. two years ago, death row inmate wesley shermantine led investigators to the scene of the bodies. yesterday, 32 inmates put on caps and gowns and received their high school diplomas or ged's. they all took part in the nation's only behind-bars charter school. many of the graduates say they stuck with the program to get an education and make their families proud. welcome to mornings on 2. it's saturday, january 11th. >> let's get a check of the weather with rosemary. good morning. >> good morning. it's a cloudy start. we have wet weather on the way. giving you a look here another where that front resides at moment over the north corner of california. if i slide in over parts of the north bay you can see we are mainly dry. we have cloudy conditions, even fog reported. this is going to be moving through. right now i'm pinging up ping -- i'm picking up just a few returns. as we get into saturday this is going to slide south the north bay will get it first and then it'll progress through the day. i will timeline had for you, show you when the best possibility will be to get wet and your numbers for today. how much rain i expect and some snow for the sierra. ly have information on that coming up. >> and we start with developing news from san jose this morning where suspected arsonist may have struck again. we are live in the downtown neighborhood where crews have been busy putting out fires. >> reporter: for the most part this fire is out though you can see a lot of san jose firefighters still out on the scene. they have their ladder truck in front of this 100 year old home. they are shooting water down into it to put out the hot spots and there is still a little bit of smoke from the roof. this fire started around 4:30 this morning and san jose firefighters believe this is the work of a serial arsonist. at that's worst it was a two alarm fire and was quite challenging because as they put the fire out the roof collapsed. there were some power lines and live wires in the area that were also affected as they were putting out the fire. this is the home of an elderly couple who lived here for decades. their neighbors fortunately saw the fire early this morning, they were able to alert the couple, wake them up, get them out. they got out unhurt and so did their pet cat. investigators are concerned. there have been 11 suspected arson fires in the downtown area since wednesday. >> major problem. we have been lucky so far. actually we -- the residents of san jose have been lucky that nobody was hurt. you know or nobody has died. >> reporter: now later today firefighters will be announcing a ten thousand dollar reward for information leading to the arrest of that arsonist. investigators are on the scene here but the captain said so far they haven't found evidence yet of an accelerant used but believe its arson because it started on the outside of the home and it's in the same area where the other ten suspicious fires have happened since wednesday. they believe it's the work of the same arsonist and later today they will announce a reward for information leading to the arsonist's arrest. live in san jose. k. >> the bodies of two people were found inside a burning home in palo palo alto. firefighters were called to the home around 7:15 last night. witnesses describe seeing flames 20 feet in the air and authorities aren't releasing the victim's identities where where the bodies were found or how they died but they say they believe they know where the fire started. >> at this point we have no indication what the cause or origon of the fire the fire department did tell us i should add that they believe pleiomery that the fire started in the kitchen of the residence. >> investigators say they will return to the scene today because it is a deadly fire. as standard procedure the arson task force will investigate along with palo alto police and fire. the fire in walnut creek claimed the life of a man in his 60s. the home caught fire around 9:30 last night. it took about 30 minute its to knock it down. the body of the victim was located on the second floor a woman who was also in the house was able to escape a former neighbor said that the couple living in the home a loving people who take in dogs and people who have no place to live. >> new this morning a pedestrian was killed in a hit and run in san jose. it happened just before midnight on the jackson avenue on-ramp to interstate 680. the chp said the victim was walking southbound on the right shoulder of that ramp when he was hit. after that initial collision, a passing taxi then struck the victim. the cab driver stopped and called for help. the pedestrian was declared dead at the scene. his name has not been released and it's not clear why he was on the ramp and there is no description of the first vehicle that hit him. also new, police in san jose are investigating the latest homicide. that happened sometime before 2:30 this morning. police say when they arrived they found the body of the male victim on the corner. the victim had been stabbed to death. so far there is no word on why the victim -- who may have been targeted or who was behind the stabbing. anyone with information is asked to call police. >> 11 people in the bay area have died from the flu and now the father of one of the youngest victims hopes the public will learn from his son's death. >> get your flu shots because it's attacking young people. more -- more so than they expected. >> cliff walker is still to shaken to appear on camera but he said he believes his 23-year- old son matthew was more at risk to getting sick because he had a busy work and social life and his overall health was run down. >> if you demand that much from your body you have to take some care of it. young people tend not to think about that. >> matthew walker's father said his son was first diagnosed with food in santa rosa the day after christmas but was sent home to recover. he returned by ambulance the next day unable to breathe. he had cardiac arrest and was in a coma for two weeks. doctors don't believe the flu will match the 2009 pandemic which killed more than 600 in california. so far there are about 3 dozen deaths statewide, possibly due to the flu because the strain is contagious and deadly health officials in the bay area, even people who got stick are warning everybody to take precautions. >> i couldn't get out of bed. like you get hit by a truck. that's what it felt like. >> the hospital said it has giverren out more than 1.2 million flu shots but the high demand means shortages in some spots, they and walgreens are redirecting people to other clinics but they expect to have more vaccines next week. county clinics like the one in concord are also reporting a dramatic jump in the number of people asking for flu shots, many are bringing in their children and doctors are focusing that you cannot get the flu from a flu shot. go to the website for a list of resources in the bay area to help you fight the flu, included is a map of where you can get vaccines, just look for that hot topics section. >> concord police have taken a couple of people in custody in connection with a shooting at a wendy's. they say there was a physical confrontation between a group of men at the restaurant on monument boulevard around six. when the victim went outside one of the suspects shot him and then fled. we are told that officers then tracked the suspects to a nearby home where they made a couple of arrests a short time later. >> i heard all the noise inside the house and people were coming out, screaming, yelling, they why saying a lot of bad words, really angry. >> the shooting victim was rushed to the hospital with life threatening injuries. police aren't talking right now about what led or might have led to that dispute. several hours earlier one person was hurt in a shooting in north concord. that happened just after 3:30 afternoon. the victim was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. both cases active but there is no evidence that they are related. >> you heard rosemary mention it at the top of the newscast. rain making its way here into northern california and slowly going south toward the bay area. >> yeah. it's a far cry from what we need but enough to get us wet and it's saturday. i definitely want to make you aware of it. scattered showers in the forecast for today and i will time it out for you in just a moment. first a beautiful look at the sun coming up. you can see the mix of clouds already in place. low clouds, a mix of high clouds, little bit of fog. this shot -- looking from san jose. what a beautiful one. san jose just a few light showers, a possibility for you. into the afternoon, there is the front. again moving through northern california, crescent city reporting light rain at times but that's been about it so far. if we get in closer to the bay area showed you this at the top of the hour we are pretty much dry. we just have cloudy conditions overhead, the rain still, at least 38 miles out. just a few returns but mostly dry. the system will move through, let me show you exactly what i'm talking about. waking up with the clouds this morning as we get into the 10:00 hour, notice over the north bay. this is where we will see most the rainfall because as it begins to sweep farther south it breaks apart by about 11:00, noontime, it's across the central bay, across i-80, the golden gate bridge. across the peninsula. for lunch a few scattered showers but notice it's already falling apart. the inner east bay. mostly cloudy. then by one or so its sliding in to the south bay a few scattered showers, the higher elevation, san jose, a few poti showers and then as we move farther south it conditions to dwindle. santa cruz, mainly dry, maybe just a few scattered showers, but this is what we will be for today. cloudy, cool the possibility of light rain. two tenths to maybe a quarter inch much over parts of the north bay and then into saturday evening we will dry out and be dry for sunday. now with all the clouds in place we are warmer this morning. 41 degrees reported in santa rose a.52 in san francisco, 53 oakland. mid40s concord and outside the door san jose you are checking in about 45. into the afternoon, cloudy and cool. mid to upper 50s in the forecast for the north bay. 56 for oakland today. mid50s san francisco. into the santa clara valley, upper 50s to near 60. morgan hill will hit 60. the extended forecast here -- always in view. scattered showers in the forecast for today. light in passing as we get into sunday we are drying out partly cloudy, slightly warmer and then a big warm upcoming your way, monday, tuesday and into wednesday, back into the upper 60's with mostly sunny skies, if you are going to the sierra it'll be snowy, windy there today. i will have that forecast for you coming up. >> thank you. later today saint mary's will announce its plans to build a new performance center for its student athletes. the project is expected to get started next spring. 500 more seats will be added to the pavilion that currently holds 3500 and a new performance center will include a weight room, training and on site sports medicine center. it'll be announced during half time at the home game today prime minister of israel died this morning at the age of 85. he was in a coma since a stroke eight years ago. doctors say in the past week vital organs started to fail. analysts call him a marriages in utah. right now they have been suspended while the decision to allow them is pealed. the state has said it'll not recognize the marriages that have already been preformed. yesterday the justice department announced that for federal purposes it'll honor those marriages. >> these families should not be asked to endure concern regarding their status as the litigation unfolds. >> in the past two weeks more than a thousand couples applied and got marriage licenses but now they say plans for a certify machiney are on hold. >> the president is calling 2014 a year of action. >> with congress or on my own and with everybody willing to play their part. that action should begin by extending unemployment insurance for american who are laid off in the recession through no fault of their own. >> economists say they were disappointed yesterday with the jobs report that shows the country added 74,000 jobs last month, the fewest in three years. the president said that the success of the country depends on the success of the economy and the ability of the american people to make ends meet and provide for their families. richmond could soon offer the highest minimum wage in the area. on tuesday the city council will discuss three different proposed rates ranging between 11 and $15 an hour. if the city council decides to put it on the november ballot voter also have the chance to vote on the increase, right now san francisco has the highest minimum wage at $10.74 an hour. the state's minute membership wage is $8 an hour. >> foster farms has been given the green light to resume operations at a plant that was shut down this week because of cockroaches. it's in livingston south of modesto. the agriculture department shut it down on wednesday. the company had a deep cleaning operation after inspectors found the insects. now that they have an action plan it can reopen today. it's their largest facility. luxury department store neiman marcus said its customer information has been hacked. they said debit and credit card information may have been compromised but they don't know how widespread the problem is at this point. they say that the security breach happened in mid- december. so far only shoppers who use their cards in stores seem to be affected, not people who bought online. the security breach at target is much worse than thought. the retailer estimates that the number of victims at 70 to 110 million. they had first disclosed last month that the credit and deb aid cards of 40 million were affected by the breach but an investigation into the theft exposed more victims and revealed other private information was also taken including names, phone numbers and e-mail addresses. >> phishing e-mail that will say they are from target and try to get financial information. >> target is offering free credit monitoring to all of its customers but experts say it's a thin layer of protection that won't stop identity theft. >> gm is a nounsing it's recalling about 370,000 trucks because they could catch fire. the recall includes 2014silv era dos and gmc full sized truck. they said the vehicles have software problems that could can lead to over heating and fires. they said they are confirmed eight such fires but no injuries involved in those fires. they said it'll fix the problem for free starting next week. tesla said its taking steps to prevent over heating of its car's charging system. they said they are sending customers upgraded wall adaptors. they said that should address the problem. several drivers of the model s have reported over heating smoking. san francisco's ride sharing program uber is cutting down the price of its service but not for long. the company has dropped its base rate to 3-dollar plus $1.50 per mile. the ceo said it's an attempt to increase market share but according to an e-mail sent out to company drivers the lower prices could be gone with in a few weeks. the company said that lower evacuates have sacrificed almost all of its revenue in san francisco. >> yelp could soon disclose the identities of several reviewers. the business owner of a carpet cleaning service in virginia is claiming seven negative reviews weren't written by real customers. an appeals court in virginia has ruled the identities of those reviewers must be released to determine if the claims are true. >> there is something to be said about being anonymous and protecting yourself and having the right to say or criticize like this is that side but there is always the liable side. are these people actually customers? >> yelp released a statement saying it didn't believe the ruling would affect other states . bart riders may get an eyeful tomorrow a group is asking people to take the train with no pants. it'll be the 13th no pants subway ride that started in new york. they say if it's a fun way to dress down but they ask people not to bare all. they recommend wearing shorts or underwear. the campaign has spread to [ male announcer ] subway. eat fresh. new developments around a string of arson fires in san jose. the latest target overnight and why concern in that area is growing. good morning. welcome back . >> it's a developing story that we have been following since yesterday's morning news a suspected arsonist loose in downtown san jose a church, a business and several homes all damaged and now this morning a century old house. we are live at the scene of the latest suspicious fire. >> reporter: this house is on east saint john and north 17th street in the downtown san jose area. firefighters have been here since 4:30 and are still out here. they are still putting water, trying to get some of the hot spots out. the fire is out but there are still hot spots they are trying to fights and you can see the ladder truck. some of the firefighters walking on the ladder truck and they are positioning their hoses above what is -- what was the roof. the roof collapsed during the fire. if we pan off to the right you can see some of the water flowing out of the home in the front porch area. nobody was hurt. that's the good news but fire investigators are concerned because they suspect this fire was the work of an sore. an arsonist. this is the 11th fire since wednesday. it started around 4:30. that's when firefighters got the call. at one point it became a two alarm fire after the roof of the building collapsed a couple in their 70s lives in the century old home and firefighters say it wasn't their smoke alarm that alerted them about this fire but their neighbors who saw the fire, went up, banged on the door, woke the couple up so they were able to escape the fire unharmed. >> we immediatey knew it was an older couple. we just rushed up. >> see if they were savior not. the house was really old. it was like any moment it may cause the entire --. >> >> reporter: firefighters will announce later today a 10,000 dollar reward for information leading to the arrest of the arsonist. investigators are on the scene. the fire captain said they haven't found evidence of accelerant used but they know this fire started on the outside of the home. they have ruled out the possibility of this being electrical. again because of where this fire happened, this location is the same neighborhood more or less where the other fires have happened. that is why they believe its arson. again, later this afternoon they will announce a 10,000- dollar reward for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible. >> and here a look at other top stories. main in his 60's died in a house fire at walnut creek. it happened on hilltop crescent a woman inside managed to escape. and the bodies of two were found in a burping house in palo alto. investigators aren't commenting about the cause of death but they say the fire started in the kitchen about 7:15 last night. there is no word on what may have started either house fire. and at least 11 people in the bay area have died from the flu. the father of a 23-year-old victim said his son's death proof that everybody should get the flu shot no matter their age. the growing demand for the shot has created a shortage at some clinics. >> police in campbell are looking for a man who allegedly assaulted a woman walking home. it happened early thursday morning at about 12:30. the victim, a woman in her 30s had just left a 7-1 when a man grabbed her and started to sexually assault her. the man pulled out a gun and threatened her but she fought back. >> she was able to burn the suspect on the left side of his face with a cigarette she had. >> police say the victim broke free from the suspect and flagged down a car passing by as the man ran. he is an african american male in his mid to late 30s, six feet tall, with a heavy pound, weighing about 250 to 300- pound. >> police are releasing video in hopes of identitying a driver involved in a hit and run a video is from december 31st december 31st. police say it shows a white van hitting a woman. officers say the woman was forced in to the van's path after first being hit by another vehicle. >> we are hoping someone in the public may have information on the where abouts of the driver and of the van and if they do contact san francisco police. >> the two individuals in the vehicle that hit the woman before the van did have been identified and are facing charges the victim had serious injuries but is recovering. >> police many oakland are trying to find if a street race led to a crash that killed a teen girl and injured another the coroner has identified its girl who died as a 17-year-old katelyn benson. they say that the car she was in hit a pole shortly after midnight a witness said that several people tried to jump in and help. >> it was smashed. it was pretty bad. it was a pretty bad accident. car was still running. they didn't want it to blow up a lot of people, you know, broke in, opened the hood, just took a spark plug wire off so the car could shut off. >> another 17-year-old who was a passenger in the car is in the hospital with critical injuries. >> we have been in the steady dry pattern for the can see it north of us, some areas right around -- picking up returns but have you to get farther north to see the light rain. we are with plenty of gray and dry conditions. i will back this way up and show you the center of circulation off the coast there. west of washington and you can see how the front sweeps through washington, oregon and now into northern california. as this moves our way, it'll begin to fizzle out just a little wit. areas over the north bay will get the best opportunity of scattered rain and as it slides south it starts to die out. ly show you what i mean. watch your neighborhood. here we are this morning as we get in too nine, ten, it starts to shift over santa rosa, into areas near marin. into 11, 12 it starts to slide in to the central bayh long i- 80, martinez, richmond getting light scattered showers along the pen slam this is lunchtime. san jose is still dry. into one or so it's now shifting into the south bay. look at how it falls apart. we have a few scattered showers reports over. perhaps over areas like mount hamilton. maybe a few sprinkles over santa cruz, by late afternoon, by dinner time we are drying out. notice the few scattered showers in the north bay. it's mostly cloudy. you could see a few lingering showers in to the evening hours but most of us will be dry and that's it. we are done. 41 degrees in santa rose a53 in oakland. low 40s concord. mid40s for san jose and again into the afternoon. we will be cooler, right about where we should be. 56 in santa rosa this afternoon. 55 for san francisco, 56 oakland. upper 50s haywood. into the south bay temperatures in the upper 50s for most 59 san jose, 60 degrees morgan hill and gilroy a look at your bay area weekend, always in view showing you we are partly cloudy for tomorrow, we are dry, slightly warmer, we could wake up with that patchy fog, we will have moisture in place at that point. monday, tuesday, wednesday, a big warm up, back in the forecast, upper 60s for the afternoon. all the way through midweek wednesday with dry conditions. i will have a look at how much rain i expect we will get out of the system moving through today. >> the 49ers prepare or miss showers a possibility for midafternoon. >> after weeks of searching the wreck of a plane belonging to the family from san jose has been found. sandale smith was piloting the plane with four family members on board when it vanished on december first. search teams say there are no survivors and a severe storm may be day recovery. in a statement posted online smith's wife wrote the plane is in pieces and buried in snow. they have not yet found all the parts. however, we do know my family on the plane died quickly and paynelessly. >> a dedication to honor a vallejo police officer killed in the line of duty a section of highway 37 is now named after him. he was shot and killed while chasing a suspected bank robber in 2011. vallejo police and residents raised $6,000 for a new road sign. another officer said that the officer's courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten. a judge is considering a lawsuit filed by the mother of a girl who remains were found at the bottom of a well linked to the speed freak killers case. she claims the sheriff mishandled the remains of her daughter with heavy equipment when they were found at the bottom of the well. her daughter was 16 when she vanished in 1985. two years ago a death row inmate lead investigators to the remains of five victims. >> a man is now in custody on suspicious of abusing and killing a puppy in front of his 4-year-old daughter. police say for the past several weeks the 31-year-old had been abusing the puppy. they say that he finally killed it on monday and threw it in a dumpster. he has been charged with felony cruelty as well as child endangerment. a former marine in new hampshire is back with his dog because of a determined vet and a community a week before christmas molly was hit by a snow plow. she had four broken legs and her owner brought letter to -- her to the vet and left her thinking she bo have to be put down. the vet was able to save her and now she is going home. >> all of us will uc davis shows smoke from wildfires could impact your health even more so than they first thought. the study looked at wildfire exposure in monkeys and found those who breathed in the smoke were more at risk to serious deceases diseases. it was done back in 2008. wildfire smoke can also cause higher ozone levels which are linked to asthma, lower birth rates and heart problems. >> gold hunters are being drawn to the edge of the american river. low water levels have exposed rocky river beds that haven't been seen since the early 90s. this past monday the water manager's limited the river's flow by more than half. they say it's to try to keep as much water as possible stored behind the dam. the river has since dropped about eight inches, retreating the river's edge 20 to 30 feet in some locations. >> some inmates at the san francisco county jail are now high school graduates. yesterday 32 inmates put on caps and gowns and got their high school diploma. they all took part in the only firefighters are still at the scene of another suspicious fire a century old home caught fire just before 43:30. this is a live picture of the house from our camera on top of the live truck at the scene. you can see forts and trucks still there at the scene investigating. this home is located ono east saint john and 17th street in the town town area. flames and smoke brought own that roof this morning. it's believed it was the 11th suspicious fire started by a suspected arsonist in the neighborhood since wednesday. they had the potential to kill or seriously injury innocent people. >> the major problem. we have been lucky so far. actually we -- the residents of san jose have been lucky that nobody has been injured, you know or -- nobody has died. >> an elderly couple in their 70e was able to escape safely. neighbors who spotted the flames banged on their door to get them out. ktvu obtained this video showing one of the other suspicious fires being set. it shows a suspect walking up to a home on 28th and san antonio street a fire erupts secs later a passing driver saw the flames and ran to the door to warn the people inside. at noon a firefighter's union will announce a ten thousand dollar reward to help them find the suspected fire bug. >> the bodies of two were found inside a burning house in palo alto. firefighters were called to the home on the 900 block around 715 last night. witnesses describe seeing flames 20 feet in the air. authorities aren't releasing the victim's identities identities. however investigators say they do believe they know where that fire started. >> at this point we have no indication what the cause or origon of the fire was. the fire department did tell us i should add that they believe pleiomery that the fire started in the kitchen of the residence. >> investigators are going back to the scene today because it is a deadly fire as standard procedure. the arson task force will investigate along with the police and fire department. a house fire in walnut [inaudible] a home caught fire around 9:30 last night. it took firefighters about 30 minutes to knock it down. the body of the victim was found on the second floor. the woman who was in the house escaped safely a former neighbor said the couple live in the home are loving people who look in dogs dogs and people with no place to live. >> 11 people have died of the in the area and the father of one hopes the public will learn. >> get the flu shot. it's attacking young people more than they expected. >> reporter: cliff walker is still so shaken to appear on camera. he said he believes his 23-year- old son matthew was more at risk to the flu and other alcoholly indications because he -- complications because he had a busy social life and his health was run down. he went to the hospital but was released. he return by ambulance unable to breathe and went into cardiac arrest. the two most recent deaths in the bay area came from alameda county, here is a map suing where showing where the deaths happened. there are three inial media and one each in sonoma, san francisco, and san mateo. these are only people who are 6a or younger. the state doesn't track deaths of people older than the age of 65. we spoke to health officials to get perspective of how you how this season compares to 2009. >> reporter: in a day whether it's a handrail, or the seats and handles of on a bus or the door of your favorite restaurant or cafe your hands are just one degree of separation from hundreds of other people who could be sick with the flu. >> couldn't get out of bed. like you get hit by a truck. >> reporter: with the bay area already seeing 11 deaths likely from the swine flu strain they are warning people to take precautions. >> like maybe we would see more this year than the other strain. >> reporter: according to the cdc activity has increased as reports of widespread flu in 25 states two weeks ago jumped to 35 states last week. in 2009, 607 people in california tied in died in the pandemic. this morning 35 possible deaths have been reported so far. this likely will not reach the 2009 pandemic size. >> it was brand new to the world. it was a newcombe identification of different kinds of viruses so nobody had any immunity to it. it hit hard and hit everybody. >> reporter: nobody knows when the flu season will peak and officials are urging everybody to get a flu shot. today this family was going in for the flu vaccine and taking extra precautions in public. >> teaching them to wash their hands more, to be really caution about washing their hands. a detective to help find him. he is 5'10'' if weighs between 150 and 170 pounds. he has brown hair and brown eyes and the number 42 tattooed on his throat. he was last seen wearing a hooded sweatshirt. anyone with information is asked to call the police. >> new, a pedestrian was killed in a hit and run in san jose. that happened just before midnight on the jackson avenue on-ramp. the chp said the victim was walking southbound on the right shoulder of the ramp when he was hit by a vehicle. the driver did not stop. the victim was then hit by a taxi but that cab driver stopped and called for help the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. his name has not been released and it's unclear why he was on the ramp. also, police in san jose are investigating the latest homicide. that happened before 2:30 this morning. police found the body of the male victim on the corner of a street. he had been stabbed. no word on motive or suspect and anyone with information is asked to call police. >> police are investigating a shooting outside of a wendy's restaurant. there was a physical confrontation between a group of men when when the victim went outside police say the gunman shot him and then fled. the victim was transported to the hospital with life threatening injuries. police are not commenting on what specifically may have led to that dispute. >> i was driving in today from -- saw a few patches of fog, not a lot. >> i saw some on the water. >> the weather is changing. that's a beautiful, beautiful sunrise. >> yeah. isn't that nice? >> sunrise. yes. >> nice little bringing rain and snow over washington, oregon, northern california reporting some. we are catching just the end. it's sort of weakening as it gets in to our neighborhood. right now we are mostly cloudy with a little bit of fog, mix of low clouds, midand high level. rain snow reported over parts of the area, moving in to lake county next. then we will start to see it here by about ten it looks like. the rain to the north. few scattered showers over santa rosa. around marin. around point reyes. lunchtime it's sliding in to central portions of the bay. half moon bay, pacifica, into the bay, down to about haywood, fremont, by one or so. shifting in to san jose. the best chance, widespread rain will be over the north bay. into the south bay notice how it breaks up, falls apart. less than that over parts of the south bay. let me show you what i'm talking about. we get into the north bay. two tenths over santa rosa. maybe a quarter inch much for some of the rainier shots. areas like say they were disappointed with the jobs report showing the country added 74,000 jobs last month the fewest in three years. the president said the success of the country depends on the success of the economy and the ability of the american people to make ends meet and provide for their families. the city of richmond could soon offer the highest minimum rage in the area. they will discuss three different proposed rates, ranging between 11 and $15 an hour. if the city council decides to put the measure on the november ballot they will have the chance to vote on the increase. right now san francisco has the highest minimum wage at $10.75. the state's minimum wage is at $8 an hour. >> foster farms has been given the green light to resume operations at a plant that was shut down this week because of cockro aches. they had a dope cleaning operation after inspectors found them. now that they have an action plan officialses say it can reopen today. the plant is their largest facility. luxury department star neiman marcus said their customer information has been hacked. they said credit and debit card information may be compromised but officials don't know how widespread the problem is. they say that the security breach happened in mid- december. so far, only shopper who use their cards in stores seem to be affected. it is not affecting people who bought online. the security breach at target is much worse than first thought. the retailer now estimates that the number of victims at 70 to 110 million. target had first disclosed that the credit and debit cards of 40 million were affected. an investigation into the theft exposed more victims and revealed that other private information was also taken including names, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses. >> phishing e-mail that will say they are prosecute from target. >> target is offering free credit monitoring but expects say that is a thin layer of protection that normally will not stop identity theft. >> gm is a nounsing it's recalling about 370,000 trucks because they could catch fire. it includes 2014silv era doa. full sized trucks, gm said they have software problems that could lead to over heating fires. really old. it was like any moment it may catch. >> another suspicious fire set in san jose and now firefighters are planning to take action. welcome back to mornings on 2. >> firefighters race to save the home that was built a century ago. the couple inside was able to escape safety because of the quick response of their neighbors. allie is live in downtown san jose where she talked to the people just a short time ago. >> reporter: the fire is out and there is just a few firefighters left here packing up some of their equipment. this fire happened between four and 4:30 this morning. fire septemberors are going to be on the scene for a while. this home is on east saint john and north 17th in the downtown san jose area the reason why investigators have a lot of work to do is they believe this fire is the work of a serial arsonist. this is new video we just got in from a neighbor showing flames shooting from the roof of the home a couple in their 70s live here. they were not hurt but the closest fire station is about a thousand feet away from this home. firefighters say that it was a jogger running through the neighborhood who was the first person to notice the flames, that jogger ran down to the fire station and rang the doorbell to alert firefighters about what was going on. the elderly couple who live in this home were saved by their next door neighbor. those neighbors we talked to a short time ago said they banged on the front door and came close to breaking the front window to warn the couple. >> we have to wake them up. it was -- it was fast. that -- the fire was just -- you know fast. we have to do whatever we can real fast. >> we are banging hard, like kicking. finally they opened and we got them out. that was the main thing. >> the elderly couple escaped unhurt with their pet cat and a few family photograph albums. this is the first suspicious fire in the downtown san jose area since wednesday that's why fire investigators will be out for most of the day gathers evidence. they believe the fire is suspicious because of where the fire started, the time and the location. the fire captain said it follows the same pattern of the other suspicious fire that have happened in downtown san jose this week. later today firefighters union is going to announce a ten thousand dollar reward they will offer for information that leads to the arrest of this serial arsonist. live in san jose, ktvu. >> san francisco police are releasing video in hopes of identitying a driver involved in a hit and run collision. this surveillance video is from december 31st and shows a white van hitting a female pedestrian. officers say the woman was forced in to the van's path after being hit by a different vehicle. >> rehopeing that someone may have information on the where abouts of the driver and of the van if they do please contact police anonymously. >> the two in the other vehicle that hit the woman first have been identified are facing charges. the victim is recovering recovering. we obtained this video showing the moment when is a 6- year-old was struck and killed by a car on new year's. you can see the suv disappear behind a sign and then back up. it appears to be when the girl was killed. the girl's mother and brother were also hurt. the driver of the van was working for the ride share service uber but didn't have a fare at the time. he is now facing a charge of manslaughter but is free on bail. >> as the san francisco 49ers prepare for tomorrow's playoffs the medical staff is making sure they are reddy to go. while they are in top physical shape they are not immune to the flu or cold. the first sign of a cough or sniffl some of them are grabbing vitamin c. they are also being told to take a lot of hot showers and 11, now most the north bay seeing a few light scattered showers, this is the best possibility a steady light rain for the area. by lunchtime it's now sliding south of the golden gate. i-80, into areas like martinez, richmond, san francisco, even down along the peninsula, along the coastline perhaps into half moon bay, a few scattered showers, san jose its lunchtime and you are still dry. we get in to the second half of the arch. now it's shifting farther south. through the central bay, oakland, haywood and into san jose, it takes until about one or so before a few scattered showers, you can see rosemary orozco. >> yes, good morning to you. we have showers on the way, scattered showers arriving over parts of the coastline. here's a look at the system here. you can see the center of the circulation off the coast of washington. we've got some rain and snow, washington, oregon, northern california, and we eventually will begin to see this as well. i want to zoom in really close here and take a look at a few returns right along the northbound bay coastline, dillon beach. we will continue to see this moving inland. i'm seeing a few, just a few  bits of moisture over areas like guerneville. may not be hitting the ground yet, but this is what we'll see for the morning hours. increase in the rain coverage over parts of the north bay, sliding into the central bay for the afternoon, eventually into the south bay, where you have a slight possibility of a few showers. i'll line up the time line and have a look at the numbers, coming up. new this morning, a suspected arsonist may have struck again in downtown san jose. just a few hours ago, flames shot from the room of a century- old home. investigators say this is the 11th suspicious fire in the area since wednesday. ktvu's allie rasmus, joining us live from the scene, where firefighters say the situation could have been much worse. >> reporter: that's right. they think the people living in the home behind me were very fortunate to get out when they did. the fire has been out for a while. cleanup crews have arrived. they are in the process of boarding up this home here. this is a century-old victorian house on east st. john and north 17th street in the downtown san jose area. you can see it's heavily damaged and the roof completely collapsed during this fire. fire investigators are going to be out this morning, gathering evidence, because they believe this fire was the work of a serial arsonist. this is the video of the flames, provided to us from a neighbor around 4:30 this morning. this was a two-alarm fire. a couple in their seventies live in the home, but they did escape unharmed, thanks to nair next door neighbors. the neighbors noticed the flames outside, ran over and woke the elderly couple up. >> we had to get them out. they are kind of an older couple, so we got them out. >> reporter: again, investigators believe this fire was deliberately set and that makes this fire the 11th suspicious fire in the downtown san jose area since wednesday. san jose firefighters union will announce today a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of that serial arsonist. >> he's becoming more brazen. he has to know that there's video out there that has him in it. it clearly shows him, if it's him, or one of the individuals. if this is his fire, he's brazen enough to go ahead and do this fire around the same time, around the general area with a fire station a thousand feet down the street. >> reporter: this is the video he's referring to, surveillance video obtained by ktvu yesterday that shows the suspected arsonist walking up to a home at 28th and san antonio in san jose. that was just minutes before a fire started at that location. now, again, investigators believe this morning's fire has a lot of the same characteristics of the other suspicious fires that have happened in the downtown area recently. so firefighters are going to be offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of that serial arsonist. for now, the couple who lives here has been displaced. they have been put up by the red cross. they have been helped by the red cross. in the meantime, the cleanup crews are boarding up their home. live in san jose, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2news. the bodies of two people were found inside a burning house in palo alto. firefighters were called to the home on the 900 block of embarcadero road around 7:15 last night. witnesses describe seeing flames 20 feet in the area. authorities are not releasing the victims' identities or where their bodies were found. however, investigators believe they know where the fire started. >> at this point, we have no indication of what the cause or origin of the fire was. the fire department did tell us that they believe preliminarily that the fire began in the kitchen of the residence. >> investigators say they are going to go back to the scene today and because this is a deadly fire, standard procedure has the santa clara county arson task force investigating, along with both palo alto police and fire. the house fire in walnut creek claimed the life of a man in his sixties. the home caught fire around 9:30 last night. it took firefighters about 30 minutes to knock it down. the body of the victim was found on the second floor. a woman who was also in the house did escape safely. a former neighbor tells the walnut creek newspaper that the couple living in the house are loving people, who took in dogs and people who had no place to live. a pedestrian was hit and killed in san jose on the jackson avenue onramp to interstate 680. chp says the male victim was walking southbound around midnight last night when he was hit by a vehicle. the driver of the vehicle did not stop. the victim was then hit by a taxi cab, but the cab driver stopped and called for help. the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. his name has not been released. it is still unclear why he was walking on the ramp. new this morning, police in san jose are investigating the city's latest homicide. it happened sometime before 2:30 this morning. police found the body of a male victim on the corner of almondon road and stone court. police say he had been stabbed. so far, no word on a motive or suspect. anyone with information about this case is asked to call police. concord police are investigating a shooting outside a wendy's restaurant. officers say there was a physical confrontation between a group of men at the wendy's on monument boulevard around 6:00 last night. when the victim went outside, police say the gunman shot and killed him and then fled. the victim was transported to john mere hospital with life threatening injuries. police are not commenting on what may have specifically led to that dispute. time now, 9:06. by our count, 11 people in the bay area have died so far from the flu. now, the father of one of the youngest victims hopes the public will learn from his son's death. >> get your flu shots, because it is attacking young people more so than they expected. >> cliff walker was too shaken to appear on camera, but said he believes his 23-year-old son matthew was more susceptible to pneumonia and other complications because he had a busy work and social life and his overall health was run down. >> if you demand that much from your body, you have to take some care of it. and young people tend, tend not to think about that. >> matthew walker's father says his son was first diagnosed with flu and pneumonia at kaiser hospital in santa rosa the day after christmas, but he was sent home to recover. he returned by ambulance the next day, unable to breathe and he suffered cardiac arrest, then went into a coma for two weeks. doctors say they do not believe the flu season will match the 2009 pandemic, which killed more than 200 californians there. are three dozen deaths in california so far. health officials in the bay area are warning everyone to take precautions. >> i couldn't get out of bed. like, you get hit by a mack truck. that's what i felt like. >> kaiser permanente says it has given out more than 1.2 million flu shots. high demand means shortages in some spots. kaiser and walgreen's are redirecting people to other clinics. they expect to have more vaccines next week. county flu clinics, like the one located in concord you see there are also reporting a dramatic jump in the number of people asking for flu shots. many parents are bringing in their children to get vaccinated and doctors are showers in the forecast. i received a tweet from wilma, and she says we need bucketfuls! we're not going to get it though. a few hundredths in some areas, maybe quarter inch or so in lucky areas. off the coast of washington, we zoom in a little closer, the sierra will pick up snow. that's great news. you'll need your chains if you're headed in that direction because the snow level, you can see snow just now falling over areas of north tahoe, right about 6000 feet, the level right now, but dropping down to 4000 feet by tonight, which means you'll need chains. it's windy up there. the wind advisory for today as well. closer home, seeing a few scattered showers pop up over areas along the sonoma coastline. you can see dillon beach reporting some light rain there. as we shift inland, just a few patches of green over areas like oxidantal. earlier, over guerneville. may not be hitting the ground just yet, but eventually will make its way through the north bay and then slide to the central bay and the south bay will get it into the afternoon. we're going to time it out for you. here is the latest future cast model, picking up at 9:00. you can see just on the northern edge there of sonoma county, seeing some showers. as we get into 10:00, 11:00, it's going to slide farther south, down into marin. getting into the lunch hour, it's now south of i-80, along the golden gate, down along the coastline, into san francisco, oakland, perhaps richmond, el cerrito. into the noon time, 1:00, it's over the central bay. then 1:00 to 2:00, now into the south bay. notice as it gets to the south bay, really begins to fall apart. so a few scattered showers for you between 1:00 and 2:00, looks like the best possibility with the steady light rain over the north bay through the morning hours, then tapering off for the afternoon. a few one hundredths over parts of the south bay. parts of the north bay picking up maybe a tenth to two tenths and some of the wetter spots, maybe a [ male announcer ] subway. eat fresh. . good morning, concord. mostly cloudy skies out your door, 53, and scattered showers this afternoon. just a short time ago, vice president joe biden announced he will lead the american delegation to the memorial service of ariel sharon. sharon died this morning at the age of 85. he been in a coma since a debilitating stroke eight years ago. vital organs, including his kidneys started to fail this week, according to doctors. political analysts call sharon a controversial and iconic figure. they say he was a passionate advocate of israeli settlements in the west banc. a 22-year-old brazillian man is in jail, after threat sending a threatening e-mail about a flight. he is accused of targeting a january 8th tam airlines flight. police say he e mailed the airline and miami police saying, quote, flight must not take off. targeted. it will go down. retaliation. cargo is dangerous. be advised. police traced the e-mail and arrested the man. he is facing up to five years in prison and $25,000 fine. the justice department is now weighing in on the status of same-sex marriages in utah. right now, same-sex marriages in the state have been suspended while the decision to allow them is appealed. the state has already said it will not recognize the marriages that have already been performed. well, yesterday, the justice department announced that for federal purposes, it will honor those marriages. >> these families should not be asked to endure uncertainty regarding their status as the litigation unfolds. >> in the past few weeks, more than 1000 couples applied and got marriage licenses, but now those couples say plans for an actual ceremony are on hold. in this morning's weekly address, president obama is calling 2014 a year of action. >> with congress or on my own, and with everyone willing to play their part, that action should begin by extending unemployment insurance for americans who were laid off in the recession through no fault of their own. >> the country added 74,000 jobs last month, the fewest in three years. president obama says the success of the country depends on the success of the economy and the ability of the american people to make ends meet and provide for their families. well, the city of richmond could soon offer the highest minimum wage in the region. on tuesday, the city council will discuss three different proposed rates, ranging between $11 and $15 an hour. if the city council chooses to put the measure on the november ballot, voters will have the chance to vote on the increase. right now, san francisco has the highest minimum wage, at $10.74 an hour. the state's minimum wage is $8 an hour. well, foster farms has been given the green light to resume operations at a plant in the central valley that was shut down this week because of cockroaches. the plant is in livingston, south of modesto. the agriculture department shut it down on wednesday and then the company underwent a deep cleaning operation, after inspectors found cockroaches. now that foster farms has an action plan, officials say it can reopen today. the plant is foster farms' largest facility. luxury department store neiman marcus says its customer information has been hacked. they say customer debit card may be compromised. officials don't know how widespread the concern is. so far, only shoppers who qood their cards in stores seem to be affected, not people who bought items online. the security breach at target is much worse than originally shot. the retailer now estimates the number of victims at 70 to 110 million. target had first disclosed last month that the credit and debit cards of 40 million shoppers were affected by the breach. but an investigation into the theft exposed more victims and revealed that other private information was also taken, including names, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses. >> phishing e-mails that will purport to be from target and try to extract financial information from the recipients. >> target is offering free credit monitoring for all of its customers, but experts say that's a thin layer of protection that typically will not stop identity theft. target has apologized for the breach. shoppers can sign up for a year of credit monitoring. the service will include a free credit report. it also includes daily credit monitoring, plus identity theft insurance. mr. 's also access to personalized assistance. target says the sign-up period has been extended for three months, and more details will be released next week. well, san francisco's ride sharing program uebber is cutting down the price of its service, but not for long. the company has dropped its base rate to $3, plus $1.50 per mile. uber says it is an attempt to increase market share, but according to an e-mail sent to company drivers, the lower prices could be gone within a few weeks. the company says lower rates have sacrificed almost all of its revenue in san francisco. san francisco's yelp could soon be disclosing identities of several anonymous reviewers. the business owner of a carpet cleaning service in virginia is claiming seven negative reviews were not written by actual customers. an appeals court in virginia has now ruled the identities of those reviewers must be released to determine if their claims are true. >> there is something to be said about being anonymous and protecting yourself and having the right to say, or criticize. like there is that side. but there's also the libel side. are these people actually customers? people wake up to the news that their house is on fire. good morning, everyone. welcome back to mornings on 2. i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. a news conference is scheduled today to announce a $10,000 reward to help find the suspect the arsonist. the announcement will come just hours after the 11th suspicious fire in downtown san jose since wednesday. allie rasmus is live at the scene of the latest fire, where an elderly couple escaped unharmed, thanks to their neighbors. allie? >> reporter: well, claudine, the fire is out and firefighters are gone. but right now, this is the scene of a big cleanup taking place. there are cleanup crews who have arrived and are in the process of boarding up this home. but this is also a crime scene. fire investigators will be here gathering evidence because they believe this fire was the work of a serial arsonist. this is video from a neighbor, showing flames shooting from the roof of this century-old victorian home on east st. john and north 17th in the downtown san jose area. the fire started sometime between 4:00 and 4:30 this morning. a couple in their seventies live in this home. they were inside at the time the fire started, but they escaped unharmed, thanks to their next door neighbors. we spoke to the father and soon who work next door, who noticed the flames outside their neighbor's home. they ran over to wake the elderly couple up. when we talked to the father this morning, he became a little emotional when he thought of what might have happened, had he not stepped in. >> i feel good, though, yeah. they are my neighbors. >> reporter: again, investigators believe this fire was deliberately set and that makes this fire the 11th suspicious fire in the downtown san jose area since wednesday. san jose firefighters union is going to announce later today a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of that serial arsonist. >> we need the public's help on this. we need them to pay attention to anything. they may know who this person is. might be their neighbor, might be family member, might be someone they are acquainted with. that will help us. >> reporter: now, this is surveillance video obtained by ktvu yesterday that shows the suspected arsonist walking up to a home on 28th and san antonio, minutes before a fire broke out at that location earlier this week. investigators believe this morning's fire has a lot of the same characteristics of the other suspicious fires that have happened in this area recently, and that's why they are offering this reward, $10,000, for information. live in san jose, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2news. san francisco police are releasing surveillance video in hopes of identifying a driver involved in a hit and run collision. this surveillance video is from december 31st. police say it shows a white van hitting a female pedestrian ataturk and leavenworth. officers say the woman was forced into the van's path, after first being hit by another vehicle. >> we're hoping that someone in the public might have information on the whereabouts of the driver and of the van. if they do, please contact san francisco police anonymously. >> the two individuals in the vehicle that hit the woman before the van did have been identified and are facing charges. police say the victim suffered serious injuries, but is recovering. police in oakland are trying to figure out if a street race led to a crash that killed one teenage girl and injured another. the coroner's office identified the girl who died as 17-year- old caitlin benson from san jose. investigators say the car she was in slammed into a pole along maritime street at 7th, shortly after midnight friday morning. witnesses say several good samaritans tried to jump in and help. >> it was smashed. it was pretty bad. you know, it was a pretty bad accident. and the car was still running. they didn't want it to blow up. lot of people, you know, broke in, opened the hood, just took a spark plug wire off so the car could shut off. >> another 17-year-old girl who was a passenger in the car is in the hospital with critical injuries. police in campbell are looking for a man who allegedly assaulted a woman as she was walking home. it happened early thursday morning, about 12:30 a.m. police say the victim, a woman in her thirties, had just left a 7-eleven when a man grabbed her from behind and started to sexually assault her. officers say the man pulled out a handgun and threatened the woman, but she fought back. >> she was actually able to burn the suspect on the left side of his face with a cigarette that she had. >> police say the victim broke free and flagged down a car passing by as the man ran away. they released this sketch. he's described as african american, in his mid to late thirties, 6 feet tall with heavy build, weighing 250 to 300 pounds. the search continues for the 28-year-old yahoo! programmer who was reported missing on new year's day. yahoo! has even hired a private investigator to try to help find luke arduni. police say he is 5' 10, between 150 and 170 pounds, brown hair, brown eyes and the number 42 tattooed on his throat. he the desk. as the san francisco 49ers prepare for tomorrow's playoff game, the team's medical staff is making sure the players are ready to go. while they are in top physical shape, they are not immune to the flu or the common cold. according to the mercury news, at the first sign of a cough or even a sniffle, those players are grabbing vitamin c. players are also being encouraged to take lots of hot showers and drink plenty of liquids. a team of doctors from stanford also went to the 49ers' practice facility last month to give those players flu shots. on the eve of the big game, there's a possibility that the team could lose one of its coaches. espn is reporting defensive coordinator greg roman is interviewing with the minnesota vikings today for their vacant head coaching job. but [ male announcer ] soups so indulgent, you'll never believe they're light. 100-calorie progresso light soups. you'll never believe they're light. i'm detecting increasing levels of happiness. ...and the speed readings are off the chart! paradise found! luscious locks. great glittering galaxies. the happiest place on earth keeps getting happier! explore more, and save up to 25% on select nights at a disneyland resort hotel. there's no end in sight. i'm going to need more time. . a great start overbay point this morning. we're off to a dry start, but changes in the forecast a few sprinkles possible for early afternoon. time now, 9:44. let's recap some of the top stories this morning. investigators believe an arsonist struck in downtown san jose. a century-old victorian caught fire just before 4:30 this morning. neighbors assisted in safely getting out the older couple that lived there. at noon today, firefighters will announce a $10,000 reward to help find that arsonist. the santa clara county arson task force, along with the palo alto fire and police departments will investigate the circumstances surrounding a house fire on embarcadero road. the bodies of two people were found in the home. their identities have not been released or how they died. authorities are not saying if that fire is suspicious. they say it is customary to bring in the arson task force to investigate any deadly fires. at least 11 people in the bay area have now died from the flu this season. the father of a 23-year-old victim says his son's death is proof that everyone should get vaccinated, no matter their age. with the growing demand for vaccinations, there are flu shot shortages at some clinics and pharmacies. well, after weeks of searching, the wreckage of a plane belonging to a family from san jose has finally been found. san jose's software engineer dale smith was piloting the plane with four of his family members on board when it vanished back on december 1st. search teams say there are no survivors and a severe storm may delay recovery efforts. in a statement posted online, smith's wife wrote the plane is in pieces and buried in the snow. they have not yet found all the parts. however, we do know my family members on the plane died quickly and painlessly. well, ufc middle weight fighter and bay area native will be holding a fund-raiser to support the survivors of typhoon haiyan. mark nunoz will host the event t has been more than a month since typhoon haiyan devastated the philippines. about 6000 lives were lost in the typhoon. nearly 1800 people are still missing. a new study out of uc davis shows smoke from wildfires could impact your health. the study looked at wildfire exposure in monkies and found those who breathed in the smoke were more vulnerable to serious diseases. the study was done in 2008. wildfire smoke can cause higher ozone levels, which are linked to asthma, lower birth rates, and heart problems. we're now learning where whitey buller bulger is being held. he is at a high security area in tucson, arizona, part of a larger facility that holds 1700 inmates. bulger is serving two life sentences, plus five years. it is not clear whether he will serve that entire sentence in arizona. a dedication to honor a vallejo police officer killed in the line of duty. a section of highway 37 has now named the james kapu memorial highway. he was shot and killed while chasing a suspected bank robber in 2011. vallejo police and residents raised $6000 for a new road sign. a fellow officer says kapu's courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten. a federal judge is considering a lawsuit filed by the mother of a girl whose remains were found at the bottom of a well, linked to the so-called speed freak killers. joan shelly claims the san joaquin county sheriff's department mishandled the remains of her daughter with heavy equipment, when they were found at the bottom of the well in 2012. her daughter, joanne hobson, was 16 when she vanished in 1985. two years ago, death row inmate wesley shermantine led investigators to the scene of the bodies. yesterday, 32 inmates put on caps and gowns and received their high school diplomas or ged's. they all took part in the nation's only behind-bars charter school. many of the graduates say they stuck with the program to get an education and make their families proud.
