New this morning, south africa bids farewell to Nelson Mandela. In a touching tribute the country buried its former president , a man known around the world as a leader of social change. A military guard took his casket into the memorial with the South African flag draped over the coffin. 4500 invited guests attended the funeral. Speakers talked about his fight against discrimination and how he preached both toll advance tolerance and understanding. Afterred main service, mandelas coffin was taken to a nearby hillside for burial. He died ten days ago at the age of 95. Friends called him a brother, a mentor and a leader. Celebrities were in attendance including talk show host Oprah Winfrey and britains prince charles. Down by the riverside the bay area also paid tribute to mandela. One of the largest memorials took place at sprow plaza on the uc Berkeley Campus. It was on that plaza that students gathered to protest against south africas apartheid regime. They encouraged everyone to continue the push for social injustice. Mandelas gift to us was to remember to prioritize the dignity of humanity even when doing so and because doing so disrupts the power structure and makes people uncomfortable. Theyre planning a longer and more comprehensive set of events in the spring to honor mandela. Organizers of the vigil said they also needed to pay tribute now. Less than a mile from that peace rally was a violent holdup of two uc students. Allie rasmus is live for us this morning in the city of berkeley with word of another case of students getting robbed on or near the campus. Reporter the latest robbery happened saturday morning near willard park. According to the daily cow, two uc berkley students were robbed at gunpoint as they walked to the park to meet friends to watch a meteor shower. Students had their cameras, lenses, iphones, a laptop and ipad stolen and the suspects were two men in their 20s who drove away in a brown or rust colored two door car. Armed robberies on or near the uc Berkeley Campus are a problem the police have been dealing with over the past two months they began increasing patrols in october of a a string of armed robberies. Uc Berkeley Police said despite that oneweek uptick their overall crime records show that robberies are actually down this year compared to last year. The Technology Students may be carrying around may be driving this crime trend. Theres within a nearly 70 increase in the robberies targeting berkeley residents with smartphones and iphones in the past year. Now we have contacted uc Berkeley Police it morning to ask them about this most recent robbery and find out if those patrols are continuing because of what happened in october, and were waiting to hear back from them this morning. Another was transported to the hospital. No arrests have been made. A stray bullet hit a young woman last night in richmond. The bullet was fired from the street into a home on waller avenue near 37th street. There were at least 9 rounds. The victim was struck in the lower back and airlifted to a trauma center. Surveillance video shows that the shooting at a Colorado High School lasted 80 seconds. Investigators say the teen gunman karl pierson was intent on evils and that he wanted to harm as many people as possible. Authorities say pierson rushed into arapahoe high with a machete, three molotov cocktails, a pump Action Shotgun and ammunition strapped to his chest. The individual fired one random round down a hallway, and then immediately went into the immediate area and space of the female victim and shot the female victim pointblank. The sheriff says 17yearold claire davis remains in Critical Condition. Investigators say they believe she was shot at random. Pierson fired five rounds and ignited one molotov cocktail. He was seeking revenge against a debate team teacher. One year later residents in newtown connecticut say they are trying to make sense of the School Shooting that devastated so many lives and families there. Residents asked for privacy yesterday as they marked the anniversary with a day of quiet and reflection. There was no public memorial, but the bells did toll at the Newtown Congregational Church in honor of the 20 children and six adults who were killed. Some of the victims families encouraged people to remember their loved ones by performing acts of kindness in their own community. Survivors of gun violence held tributes nationwide. Gabrielle giffords and her husband remembered the newtown victims by planting a yellow rose bush at a Community Garden in arizona. The garden was created following the 2011 tucson shooting that killed six people and critically injured gifford. Her husband yesterday spoke on her because of. For the families of the 26 people who died in newtown the heartache will never go away. We are hopeful that the fight is not over and america will not forget sandy hook. Giffords and her husband have launched a campaign for tighter gun control. While shes no longer in congress, she says her crusade against gun violence will carry on. Newtown remembrances included a sunset vigil in the valley. Organizers used 26 cardboard boxes as pillars for each victim with name and age and a pair of shoes on top. Mourners were encouraged to bring flowers for each small pillar. A few dozen people gathered singing songs and reflecting on the lives lost. Ive been really amazed to be honest. Ive been really inspired by, you know, our country just not letting it go, you know, just not something we can forget. These shoes actually represent people who you know, children that were alive at one point. This event was sponsored by organizing for america, a volunteer arm of the white house that held newtown vigils across the country, but the group says the vigils were nonpolitical by focusing only on the victims. And a couple of dozen people rang bells during a newtown tribute at st. Vincent de paul church in San Fransisco. They rang a bell once for each of the 26 victims and rang the belt collectively to show their resolve never to stay silent on the issue of gun violence. Two teens in West Sacramento are being called heros after saving a family from a burning house. That fire started yesterday about 3 p. M. Out on a back patio. Times reports the university is working with Health Expert to decide whether to give students the vaccine. Princeton university has already received permission to distribute that drug after eight students got sick with meningitis. Four students at uc cincinnati barbara got sick last month. As the influenza season picks up the centers for Disease Control and prevention is urging people to get a flu shot and says theres plenty of supply. A warning this morning from the state treasurer who says the teacher retirement system is running out of money fast. The 176 million fund supplies pensions to Public School teachers. The treasurer predicted in a speech that if nothing is done, that fund will implode in 30 years. He quoted a budget expert who recommends the state kick in a half billion dollars right now to shore up that system. A barrier Literacy Program is expanding its reach within Contra Costa County thanks to local donors its receiving a 225,000 investment. Starting in january, the program will be able to rotate thousands of books among local kindergarten classes and child care programs. A spokesperson for the group says the goal is to help close the achievement gap for low income students by providing them with books.
