We still get some of this working its way to the parts of the east bay, berkeley, kensington, maybe emeryville. There was a band along the san mateo coast but i guess it washed itself out. Between brentwood, byron, oakley, theres been popping up a little bit. 40s and 50s on the temperatures. The only Thing Holding up the temperatures is the clouds and wind. The cold air arrives early this afternoon and then tonight for sure. Mostly cloudy. A couple of light guy showers. 50s on the temperatures for almost everybody. Heres sal. Steve, good morning. Were looking at a commute thats growing busier by the moment here as you drive to the bay bridge, driving in, lets say, from west Contra Costa County to alameda county. You will see slow traffic in pockets. It has not been as bad as other days. There are spots that breaks free. When you get to the toll plaza, its about a 20minute delay. Its curious if some of the lanes are not taken up here. Theres a little bit of room for you. No problems once you make it on the span. We spoke about Contra Costa County were looking at highway 4. You can see traffic there is going to be a little bit slow on highway 4 as you drive through. We already showed you the 80 freeway. If you are driving over to marin county on southbound 101 between novato and san rafael, we have some slow traffic here from about roland boulevard all the way down into the lucas valley and the central san rafael. Back to the desk. All right, sal. All over the bay area, cold weather shelters are opening up to provide beds for the home les. One of the temporary shelters opened up last night in san jose. Thats where ktvu channel 2 reporter janine de la vega is there this morning to talk about how many people used it. They closed up in the morning, right, janine . Reporter yes, at 6 00 a. M. You can still see some people out here lingering after they received the free breakfast. It was nearly full. Word still getting out among the homeless that the shelter is open for the night. There are just 50 available beds at the san jose location. And they are given out on a lottery basis. Life builders is providing 275 emergency beds each night through march at the baccara center. According to the homeless census, more than 7600 people are homeless which is an 8 increase from 20011. There was an 18 in the Homeless Population just in the city of san jose. One woman who used the shelter last night says its been a struggle to find affordable housing. Im on Social Security but, you know, i only make so much money and the thousanddollar rents are staggering. I dont make that kind of money. I can only pay a little bit. I cannot afford to rent. Im looking for a room where i can do some housework to make up for the extra point. But thats really challenging, too. Reporter a recent study lie the Silicon ValleyHousing Trust reports that san jose is the fourth most expensive city in the country for renters. It showed that 109,000 households pay more than 30 of their gross income to rent. The national lowincome Housing Association reports an hourly page of 30. 96 is needed to rent a twobedroom apartment in san jose. But in santa clara, the average hourly rage is 17. 99 and minimum wage in san jose is 10 an hour. So theres quite a disparity there ill greating the need for illustrating the need for more aid fordable Housing Affordable Housing needed. Janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. The mayor of san rafael and the director of the Marin County Department of health announced they plan to Work Together to create an Emergency Shelter for the homeless that will be opened year round. For the last six years, about 42 marin congregations have operated a Winter Shelter Program. They say the demand for beds has grown. A vallejo fire that forced more than two dozen people out of their homes and injured a fire, it is being called suspicious this morning. Tara moriarty is live in vallejo to tell us what the investigators are telling you. Good morning, tara. Reporter well, good morning. Were here at the apartment complex where the fire started. Police say that someone broke into one of the units here, burglarized it, poured accelerants all over the place before torching it. Want to show you right behind me, the fire spread and the entire wing is uninhabitable. 25 people, including many children, were forced out. The fire happening at 1 00 sunday morning at the marina heights apartment complex on carolina street. The threealarm blaze started in one of the 16 units in the g wing. It took firefighters 40 minutes to get it under control. Crews from four other cities had to pitch in to help. One unit was destroyed. Investigators say there were other clues that the fire was suspicious as well. Apparently the tenant in g 12 was in the process of moving out when the fire occurred. Reporter that looks a little suspicious . Possibly. Reporter one firefighter suffered first and Second Degree burns. He was treated at the hospital and released. The red cross is helping the displaced families fining a place to stay. A find a place to stay. A 26yearold man was killed in another wing of the apartment complex but they dont believe its related to this fire. Tasm, cut Tara Moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. The search will resume for missing pilot dale smith and his four travelers. Air Traffic Controllers lost contact with his plane on sunday as he tried to land in a restoet airstrip in the idaho wilderness. This is his beech bonanza plane. He had reported engine troubles during a flight from oregon to montana. Heavy snow in idaho has slowed down the search efforts. The Idaho National guard plans to resume the search today, weather permitting. A u. S. Airways flight from texas to arizona had to be diverted after a man suspected of having tuberculosis was on that plane. The man had been placed on the nofly list for possibly being infected. By the time the airline was notified, he was already on the plane. Passengers said the pilot made the announcement and then the Flight Attendant gave the man a medical mask covering his face. When the flight landed, that plane was diverted to a special gate. The man was checked out by a doctor. The doctor says other passengers should not be concerned. Their risk of getting t. B. Is very, very slow. They do not need to seek healthcare. If they get a cough at this point, its probably a cold or the influenza. The centers for Disease Control says theres another reason why passengers should not worry. The cdc has not yet confilmed that the man actually has t. B. New this morning, the u. S. Coast guard station in San Francisco has released this dramatic video. It shows a helicopter crew coming to the rescue of a kayaker in the waters off the bay, a remote part of west marin county. The rescue happened yesterday after the coast guard received reports that the man was suffering from stomach pain and dehydration. No word on how the man got sick or his current condition. Police have tracked down a teenaged boy who escaped from San Franciscos juvenile detention center. Officers took the 17yearold boy into custody on Treasure Island late last night several hours after his escape. No word yet on why the. Was treasure why the boy was on Treasure Island or how officers found them. 15yearold students scored well in math, reading and science. Of the 34 developed countries involvedded in the study. U. S. Ranked 26th in math, 21st in science and 17th in reading. Thats despite the United States spending more for student than almost all other countries. The u. S. Spends about 115,000 per student. A shark attack yesterday in hawaii off the coast of maui has left one man dead and it was the eighth shark attack there this year. 57yearold patrick brianny was attacked yesterday. He was fishing in a kayak. His fishing partner was able to put a tourniquet on his badly injured leg and flag down a tour boat for help. Brianny died a short time later. The lifeguard said steps are being taken to keep people safe. Were closing the beach, monitoring it. Keeping it safe for the community. Back in august a german tourist died after a shark bit her arm in hawaii. This past friday, a woman was injured by a shark in maui. Recordings of 911 calls made during the sandy hook elementary rampage will be released tomorrow. Connecticuts state attorney has been fighting that, saying the recordings would be painful for the victims families. Now, he says he wont challenge the judges decision to make the calls public. Last december a gunman shot and killed 20 children and six adults at that school before killing himself. 7 15 is the time right now. A judge is expected to decide today whether detroit is eligible for bankruptcy protection. That would mean the city would work on a plan to pay off creditors. If not eligible, detroit would probably be forced to negotiate with the creditors, especially unions and Pension Funds. Detroit is the largest city ever to seek bankruptcy protection. Fast food workers from about 100 u. S. Cities plan to walk off the job on thursday. Their goal, draw attention to how hard it is to live on the federal minimum page of 7. 25 an hour. Hes been there with how much snow has fallen in the past hour. Reporter all in all, the snow has been light but constant. Thats put down about a half inch of snow. Not enough to bring out chain controls over 880. Thats the good news for drivers hoping to beat the storm. As the driving conditions have been calm, and that that along with the efforts from caltrans to keep the roads plowed, no major incidents on the freeway. Ski resorts hoping for more snow than this. Driving up, i will tell you the fog was probably the biggest challenge weve had coming up 880 making it difficult to see. It wasnt until about 6,000 feet around the sisco grove kingvale exit where we saw the rain turn to snow. Really mild as were waiting for the cold arctic air to come in. The temperatures could drop in the Single Digits in the coming days in the sierra. As blustery and as cold as it looks out here, i will take this because i know were on the doorstep of very cold temperatures coming in the sierra. Westbound bay bridge, 20minute delay here at the toll plaza before you actually get on the span. We talked about marin county on southbound highway 101. Its a little bit slow there. I also want to mention if you want to take b. A. R. T. , caltrain or muni and not deal with the muni conditions with the windy conditions, the systems are on time. That tells you that things are on the way. Cloudy, windy, a few showers, not a lot. Then we see the temperature take a plunge. That will be into wednesday. Some temperature also have a hard time getting over 50 degrees. That will be inland tomorrow. This pattern doesnt look like its going anywhere any time soon. It will be with us for 5, 7 days. Coldest air arrives in the afternoon. A few showers, temperatures, i think it will be chilly for some. A lot of 50s. Maybe low 50s. Ukiah and clearlake, a couple of soft 60s. Brentwood, antioch, danville, walnut creek all near 58 or 59. A little bit warmer morgan hill and gilroy but not much. 50s for everybody on the coast.
