About 90 minutes ago, a federal mediator gave us an update saying both sides will continue negotiations. Reporter i just got a text from someone from the union who indicated they are hopeful. Thats the first time that ive heard those words uttered from somebody from the unions side. Thats good news. Around 5 30, we started to see people trickle out with their suit cases. We were hoping there was a deal but we were told people needed to get some rest, take a break and go home. We noticed that Antoinette Bryant, we saw her walk out in a seemingly good mood. Shes usually talkative but did not talk because of a gag order. The fact that no one is talking is a good indicator that the two sides are getting close. At the mediators request, well be taking a recess until early this afternoon. Thats all im gonna have to say. Negotiations are continuing. Well be back at this this afternoon. Reporter at 10 00, there was a counteroffer presented in response to b. A. R. T. s best and final. Weve heard from insiders that the two sides are locking heads on the key issue which is pay. At this point, still no contract. But the good news, theres no strike for today. Many b. A. R. T. Commuters are making backup plans in case a strike is called. Alex savidge is tracking the ferry option live from the oakland Ferry Terminal this morning. Alex, good morning. With the threat of a strike, a lot of people probably made plans to take the ferry from the east bay into San Francisco today and it could be that some of those people would stick with the backup plan and still take the ferry, even though the b. A. R. T. Trains are still running. Were here at the oakland terminal at jack london square. I want to show you the scween about a half scene about a halfhour ago. That particular boat didnt seem that crowded. Well have to wait to see whether more people continue to show up. During the last b. A. R. T. Strike in july, the ferry was a popular option for commuters who lined up early at the oakland terminals. We know because theres no b. A. R. T. Strike, ferries will be operating on a normal schedule today. If a strike happens, theres a plan in place, more ferries will be put into service, they would be running more frequently and there would be direct service from oakland and alameda into San Francisco. A little while ago, i talked with one regular b. A. R. T. Rider catching a ferry. She told me she was expecting to wake up to a strike. I wake up early, anyway, but i would rather know ahead of time. But having to stay up until midnight to see if theres a strike is not fun. Reporter commuters are growing frustrated in this labor dispute and having to keep track whether the trains will be cupping. That woman told me she may end up taking the ferry here for the next couple of days until things settle out and this labor dispute is settled. Theres regular ferry riders who said they are glad that the b. A. R. T. Strike did not happen simply because the last time there was a strike, there were huge crowds. Had been planning to offer limited bus service between the east bay and San Francisco. About 200 charter buses would have been offered if there was a strike. Thats about double the number is hired during it hired during the july strike. They can only accommodate 600 passengers a day. The returned trips will be between 3 00 and 7 00 p. M. There are also alternatives in the works for east bay commuters not going to San Francisco. County connection which serves central Contra Costa County plans to offer alternatives if there is another b. A. R. T. Strike. The agency will run a small number of buses between concord and 20th street and broadway in oakland. A small number of buses may run between the dublin pleasanton b. A. R. T. New this morning, the family of a woman found dead in the stairwell of a San Francisco hospital is speaking out. 57yearold Lynn Spaulding disappeared from hur hospital room at her hospital room at San Francisco general. She was found 17 days later. Officials have not yet said how she died but they have ruled out fall play. The family now wants the hospital to update the public and they issued this statement that says we look forward to the independent review by ucsf and, again, thank you mayor lee for calling for it. Homicide detectives are investigating last nights shooting on rose street near buchanan. Police say someone drove by or walked up to three young men and shot them around 7 30. One victim is said to be a teenager. No word on any suspects in the case. And at about the same time as that shooting in San Francisco, two teenagers were shot in oakland, it happened at 7 20 last night on 61st avenue near east 16th. Initial reports indicate the victims are a boy and a girl, 14 or 15 years old. They are expected to survive. There were reports of a third victim but that person has not been found. Police in San Francisco say someone made off with more than a Million Dollars worth of goods from the fairmont hotel. The alleged theft happened on october 6th at karisma crafts a high end shop in the hotel. Someone filled a uhaul with carpets, jewelry and furniture. A recently fired employee is a person of interest in the case. The person has claimed all of the merchandise is his. Several small earthquakes hit the berkeley area overnight.
