Westbound 80 right at san pablo avenue. The traffic is backing up as you drive out of richmond and head out towards el cerrito. This is blocking a lane here as i try to get more information. One of the things you should know is that traffic is going to be slow if you are driving. This is a hit and run crash by the way that has one vehicle outstanding, car parts all over the place. We begin with developing news, firefighters in redwood city putting out hot spots from a smoky fire at a Metal Recycling plant. It started at about 1 00 this morning and its at the Simms Metal Management plant near the port of redwood city. Investigators say the fire is burning car parts, old appliances and other discarded items which is sending up a huge plume of smoke. There are no reports of injuries but its not clear how this fire started. You may remember there was another fire at this same plant just one month ago. That fire on november 10th november 10th raged for nearly 17 hours and it. Proked a shelter and place order in three counties due to the heavy smoke coming from that recycling plant. Janine de la vega will have a live update on this mornings fire coming up in our next half hour. Air quality Officials Say air pollution remains at unhealthy levels because of an ongoing cold weather pattern. Thats why the district has declared a tenth straight spare the air alert today. Reporter a prominent San Fransisco developer was in the middle of a major remodel on this home when it suddenly collapsed last night. Let me show you the scene here behind us. It is pretty dramatic. This two story structure came tumbling down the hillside last night and came to rest here on graystone terrace where we are this morning near twin peaks. Police still have this street blocked off right now, but the structure isnt in danger of sliding anymore. No one was hurt amazingly enough during this collapse. Police say no one was inside the home when it gave way last night around 10 30. Firefighters responded to this scene. At least one neighboring home had to be evacuated. The homes address is actually one street up from here at 125 crown terrace. Now according to property records, that home was originally built in 1941 and is owned by mel murphy. Published reports say hes the former president of the San Fransisco Building Inspection Commission, and he originally applied to demolish this property but was actually denied. Records indicate murphy was in the process of remodeling this home and it was set to go from two stories to four story with contractors adding on 4,000 feet of space. So far this morning theres no word on what caused it collapse. Last night i put in a call, this morning put in a reached out this morning i should say to the department of building inspection for a comment here, still waiting to hear back. In january of this year a project that murphy was working on in the Mission District was shut down. According to the San Fransisco chronicle and the San Fransisco examiner, murphy was allegedly operating without the proper permits. At that time murphy was president of the Building Inspection Commission. Now in march he was appointed to the citys Port Commission by mayor ed lee. Critics opposed that appointment because of the earlier controversy. Time is 6 06. Happening now fire crews in Monterey County are back on the fire lines of that huge wildfire in big sur. The 500acre fire is burning out of control near pfeiffer state beach. So far it has destroyed 15 homes, forced the evacuation of 100 people. So far theres no word of any injuries but containment is at 0 . The sheriff of Monterey County says firefighters are facing some big challenges as they battle this rare december wildfire. The nature of the fire, the low humidity, the wind, the fuel, it just hasnt rained here at all. Normally by this time of the year everything would be wet but it hasnt been that way at all. Now big surs fire chief is among those who lost her home. Investigators are looking into reports that an illegal campfire may have started that fire late sunday night. Happening today, doctors will perform one last test this morning on a teenager declared brain dead after having her tonsils removed. The family of 13yearold jahi mcmath holding on to hope, though, as one more test, one more brain test is scheduled for some time later today. Not sure exactly when. We are keeping in touch with the family for the very latest. Jahi was admitted to oakland Childrens Hospital last monday to simply have her tonsils removed. Her family says after the surgery she began bleeding heavily and by thursday she was on life support declared legally brain dead. We spoke with the family recently. Jahis uncle says this is not the familys choice to pull her off life support and that they are prepared to say goodbye but theyre awaiting the results of this latest brain test. I was supposed to be getting ready to dance with her at our christmas party. I was supposed to be getting ready to give her her christmas present, you know, christmas is only about a week away, week and a half. I mean, we were our expectations was to have our little girl at home. Very difficult for the family this morning, and this morning as well a final eeg test is being done to determine if there is any brain activity. After the results of that test, the family will then decide about removing jahi from life support. She had her tonsils removed because of a sleep apnea problem according to the family and the hospital also released a statement yesterday saying in part that they are respecting the wishes of the family not to release any details about the case and that they are supporting the family any way they can during this very difficult time. We learned that six Service Members have been killed after a plane crashed in afghanistan. No reported fighting in that area when the plane went down, but the nationalities of those on board the plane have not been released. Time now 6 09. A congressional hearing investigates a September Mass shooting at the washington d. C. Navy yard. The focus will be security at those federal facilities. Now in the case of the navy yard shooting, the gunman was a contractor who did have security clearance. On september 16th, he walked into the Washington Navy yard with a sawed off shotgun. He killed 12 people before he was shot and killed by police. Back here at home we now have some results from the weekend gun buyback programs in oakland and san jose. It happened at mearls hallmark store at 6 15 last night. The store clerk says she could hear the car lose control just before it hit the store. The driver was treated on the scene for minor injuries. No one else was hurt. A San Fransisco doctor is facing up to 20 years in prison for his alleged role in a homeless drug rink. Dr. Collin leong pleaded not guilty last week to charges of drug dealing and conspiracy. Police say in exchange for cash he was issuing provisions to home before prescriptions to Homeless People for oxycodone and hydrocodone. New questions about the value of multivitamins from a highly regarded medical journal. An editorial in the annals of internal medicine says using multivitamins and supplements to prevent chronic conditions is a waste of money. The writer says three studies found little or no benefits of multivitamins in preventing heart attacks, cancer or improving mental function. Other doctors say supplements help americans get the vitamins and minerals they dont normally get. The government is asking questions about the risks posed by antibacterial soaps and body washes. It goes in and out. Were standing about a mile away, and thats for safety reasons. Were right at seaport and bloomquist avenue and the Redwood City Fire Department istizing people who live advising people who live in the area to stay indoors. Theres no time estimate on when its going to be extinguished there at the plant. We were taken closer to the fire, and this is new video taken in the last 30 minutes of firefighters fighting the fire at simms Metal Recycling plant on seaport boulevard. Firefighters say they received numerous report of an explosion and fire just before 1 this morning. They arrived and found a huge pile of scrap metal appliances about 100 feet in length and 30 feet high that was burning. You know, grabbing the pile and moving it section by section and breaking it apart that way. While its burning. While its burning, correct. Fire officials dont know what caused the fire, but theres been four fires at simms since 2007. The fire marshal says its not uncommon for this to happen at a recycling plant because they deal with metal and combustible material. Now people who work nearby are being held back and prevented from going to their jobs for safety reasons. Theyre concerned about the air quality. It is a spare the air day today and as i mentioned before, fire officials are advising people to stay indoors. Again, the spokesperson, the fire marshal has been going back and forth from the fire giving us updates, and again, he says Good Progress is being made. Theres about 40 firefighters working it. The cause of the crash is being investigated but Officials Say it appears the helicopter went down because of engine failure. Its a devastating diagnosis for a 19yearold woman in richmond who was hit by a stray bullet over the weekend. The family of Dominique Romero says shes paralyze from the waist down. Romero was sitting on a couch inside her home on waller avenue saturday night when someone opened fire firing multiple shots in the street and one of the bullets went right through the wall of the house and hit romero. Her family says despite the diagnosis, romero is still in good spirits. Shes in pain one minute. Shes laughing and talking to us like nothing ever happened. The bullet is in her spine and they cant do surgery because its in a very difficult spot. Richmond police say they are still searching for the shooter and a motive. New this morning, firefighters in birmingham alabama are searching for two people in the rubble of an apartment building. That building exploded early this morning sending eight people including four children to the hospital. Firefighters say the fire burned for about two hours. Chemical safety board is recommending sweeping changes to how refineries are regulated in california in the wake of the fire at the chevron refinery in richmond. Now the board is calling on the state to adopt the safety case system, which is used in the United Kingdom and australia. It requires refinery operators to present a written plan for controlling safety hazards that includes input from workers. Regulators would have the power to audit the report and issue citations.
