This is ktvu channel 2 morning news. Good morning. Welcome back, we are live in san jose this morning at a shelter that just opened its doors overnight. Now that the weather is definitely getting colder, ktvus janine de la vega talking about a new study that is raising concerns. Shes there at the shelter this morning, were going to check in with her in just a little bit. Tuesday december 3rd, im pam cook. And good morning. Im dave clark. Lets check weather and traffic. Steve this is no joke. I mean its definitely a change there. We have a pretty good little breeze there, windy conditions for some. Altamonte pass, fairfield had gusts of 35. Napa airport 30, concord 24 but cloud cover and definitely the wind Holding Temperatures up. Everybody heres in the 50s. Now high temperatures today are going to be very brutal because some of these may be set before noon today. And therein lies the problem with a lot of this. You may by noon get your temperature and then by 4 or 5 00 that temperature will drop about 5, 10 degrees here. Our system is moving in, a lot of cloud cover. Weve had a little bit of rain but mostly looks to be dissipating. Theres not a lot let. Some also towards some of ther elevations out to the east and a couple little showers around san jose. Overall look for a windy day, cloudy in the morning, and then turning colder in the night as that cold air begins to work its way in. Highs in the 50s. Heres sal. Good morning. We are looking at a commute that is affected by a very small grass fire. 580 westbound near coolidge. It was mostly smoke, some flames, a couple of Engine Companies there. Could be a little slow but no major slowdowns on 580 yet as you head from high street to lake shore. Lets take a look at live pictures, the toll plaza backup is about 10 to 15 minutes, no problems on the bridge. An earlier crash cleared from that span. Traffic is going to be a little bit slow. San jose northbound 280 traffic getting up to highway 17. Nice and clear in the south bay so far. 6 02. Lets go back to the desk. Temperatures are dropping, and that is prompting organizations that help the homeless to open up temporary shelters for those living on the street. Ktvu channel 2 reporter janine de la vega joins us from san jose to talk about the need in a new study. Reporter people have started waking up here in the shelter in san jose in the last hour. The shelters closes at 6. Theyre going to provide breakfast though in the next 30 minutes. For those who havent committed to programs here its back to the streets for the day. Life opened its centers last night which provides 275 emergency beds for those living on the street. Now out of that number theres just 50 beds for those in san jose. Its not enough for the growing Homeless Population. The 2013 home lessen discuss survey showed there are more than 7600 people homeless on any given night, which is an 8 percent increase in Santa Clara County from 2011. There was an 18 increase in the city of san jose. Those who used the bed last night were grateful for the shelter. I came here because i had four broke ribs and i just was hurting so bad that i couldnt stay on the streets any longer. I came here got a little bit better and take care of some things i need to take care of and it worked out. The place is a real good place right here, real good place. Advocates say theres not enough Affordable Housing in Santa Clara County, a recent Study Reports that san jose is the fourth most expensive city in the country for renters. The report says cutbacks in federal funding and the loss of Redevelopment Agency money has taken a toll. There are a number of state bills under review in the legislature that could provide a permanent source for Affordable Housing including sb391 which could raise 720 million a year for Affordable Housing. Time now 6 05 this morning, emergency crews in idaho hope to resume the search for san jose pilot dale smith and his passengers. Air Traffic Control lost contact on sunday as smith was trying to land at a remote airstrip in the idaho wilderness. This is the bee beech bonanza plane. Smith reported having engine problems during a flight from oregon to montana. Heavy snow in door is hampering the search efforts. The Idaho National guard plans to resume the search this morning. A fire in vallejo is being called suspicious this morning that left one firefighter injured and forced more than two dozen people from their homes. Tara moriarty is in vallejo this morning to tell us what investigators are saying about this fire. Reporter were here at the fire station that responded to sundays fire. One of their own was hurt, a firefighter receiving first and Second Degree burns. He was treated and released from the hospital. Now this broke out around 1 00 in the morning sunday, this fire at a marina heights apartment complex on carolina street. 25 people including many children are now out of their homes in the wake of this fire. The three alarm blaze started in one of the 16 units in the g wing and took firefighters about 40 minutes to get under control. One unit was destroyed. The other sustained heavy damage. Investigators say there are signs that this fire is suspicious. It appears that the apartment had been burglarized. There was a glass broken out of the front door which the firefighters did not break when they entered the apartment, and that they did find an accelerant within that apartment. Reporter the red cross has helped the displaced families find a place to stay and police say just four days ago a 26 yearold man was killed in another wing of the apartment complex but they dont believe it is related to this fire. Coming up were going to tell you what police say is also very suspicious about this particular fire. Live from vallejo im Tara Moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. Police have tracked down a teenage boy who escaped from San Fransiscos juvenile detention center. Officers took the 17yearold boy into custody on Treasure Island late last night several hours after his escape. No word yet on why the boy was on Treasure Island or how officers managed to find him. Today supervisors in Sonoma County are president ed to begin appointing a specific task force on officer involved shootings. Its in response to the Fatal Shooting of 13yearold andy lopez in santa rosa in october. A sheriffs deputy shot the teenager several times after mistaking his toy gun for a real assault rifle. The task force expected to create an independent citizens review board that would examine all Police Shootings in the county. Congress meantime is moving to renew a 25yearold ban on guns that could evade metal detectors and xray machines. The Many Democrats wanted tougher restrictions to require permanent metal components that would make plastic guns more detectable. The republican led house is expected to approve a 10year extension of the ban that exists right now. Democrats will probably support it figuring thats the best they can get. 911 phone calls made during the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting rampage will be released tomorrow. Connecticut state attorney had been fighting against releasing those recordings saying the recordings of severyn seven calls made from inside the school would be painful for the victims families. Now he says he wont challenge a judges decision to make the calls public. Last december a gunman shot and killed 20 School Children and six adults before killing himself. San fransisco police are investigating a crash that killed a motorcyclist in the citys lower hate neighborhood. Police say the motorcyclist collided with a car on the corner of oak and steiner streets at 8 30 last night. The driver stopped and is cooperating with investigators. The motorcyclist was rushed to sf general but died from his injuries. The death of a child hit in a crosswalk has renewed a push for major street changes in downtown san jose. More than 100 people attended a vigil for 3yearold elijah alvetry who was hit and killed in his stroller a week ago. People living near by saying the corridors in and out of downtown move too fast and would be safer if converted to twoway streets. There have been 24 pedestrian deaths in son jose this year alone. T. s board of directors asked Union Leaders to resubmit a revised contract without a disputed family leave provision. Theres still no talk of the unions going out on strike for a third time this year. It appears more and more likely the unions will probably head to court to settle the contract dispute. Retro fit work in the transbay tube thats been causing delays for late night b. A. R. T. Riders, its wrapping up six months early. The crews gap the overnight installation of heavy steel reinforcing plates back in march. To make the work out there safe, trains were single tracked around the work crews. That typically caused delays of about 15 to 20 minutes for midweek, late night service. Other phases of the retro fit project include upgrades to 34 stations and 22 miles of elevated track as well as support columns and parking structures. Some big changes being considered for San Fransiscos south of mart area. The citys Planning Commission will unveil its longterm rezoning plan to transform that entire area to reflect the changing times. At 6 15, central florida, a bear attacked and seriously injured a woman while she was walking her dog. It happened last night in the town of longwood. Police say the woman managed to get away and run to a neighbors house. The bear ran off and has not been found. Wildlife officials have set traps in the area to try to catch that bear. Pams not happy about this, a mans been killed in hawaii in another shark attack off the coast of maui. 57yearold Patrick Briney was attacked yesterday. He was fishing in a kayak in the waters by maui. His fishing partner was able to tie a tourniquet be to his badly injured leg. He flagged down a tour boat to get some help. However he died a short time later. A lifeguard says steps are being taken to make sure everyones safe. Were closing the beach, monitoring, making sure everybody stays out of the water. Back in august, a german tourist died after a shark bit her arm in maui. This past friday a woman was injured by a shark in maui as well. Back here at home, many ski resorts have been waiting for a storm, and they may be getting it now. Snow is already falling in the sierra this morning. Our reporter brian hick key live where the snow is coming down hard. Reporter good morning from a very snowy donners summit. The snow coming down making for whitened ground and the interstate covered that little bit of snow. It has not been enough yet to bring up chain controls on interstate 80. Highway 50 and highway 88 to the south of us on the south end of lake tahoe have chain controls at this hour. I think its only a matter of time before we see chain controls on interstate 80. Temperatures in the valley, very mild this morning. In fact its rain all the way up to about cisco grove. A few miles down the road from where we are it was raining on our way up and then it switched to snow instantly around king vail and its been snowing for the last couple of hours. Accumulations still only about a half an inch so the ski resorts hoping for a lot more. The good news, we are expecting colder air to come in. That will bring fluffier and higher quantities quantities of snow. To hopefully give themselves a better base at the ski resorts. Behind me, a convoy coming through. You can still see them coming through here without chains. Its kind of obvious by looking at that picture that if youre driving to the sierra today, you should bring the chains with you and know how to put them on. You can see that traffic is backed up for about a 15 to 20 minute delay. There are no major problems this morning if you are driving through. Weve also been looking at the commute on the east shore freeway. We have some slowing coming in already from richmond through berkeley as you head west to the main part of oakland. 580 is slow coming from the altamonte pass to livermore. There have been a couple sprinkles, not that much. 50s mainly on the temps, cloud cover and also the Breeze Holding things up. Breezy to windy later on and then tonight. Cold air is on its way. Mount tam 37, napa airport 30 and concord buchanan says 24. Some of the temperatures all in the 50s here. I mean high temperatures today are really going to be kind of brutal. I mean, again by about 5 00 that temperature will be plunging pretty fast. So we start off mainly upper 40s, low 50s. You can see the cloud cover over us. Also the snow level again, its raining in blue canyon, as you just saw, could be some light rain. Weve had a couple reports here, especially out to the valley. Also around looks like altamonte pass wrapping back around some of the Higher Elevations near mount diablo. A couple sprinkles near san jose. Temperatures today against starting off on the mild side for some. Its 36 up in crescent city. That cold air is on the way, mainly 30s, 40s, to the 50s. We have a Winter Weather advisory until 4 00. Snow level starting off around 6,000 and coming down. Gusts over the passes easily over 60, maybe 70 miles per hour. A lot of cloud cover, breezy to windy and cool to cold but then here comes that colder air. That will really plunge in by tonight and then we go cold cold cold. Cloudy, windy in the morning, a few showers here, not a big deal, but the temperature drop will be significant as we head into tonight and also tomorrow. Windy and colder, colder air arrives later on. Mostly cloudy this morning. Its already freezing for some depending on your definition. 50s antioch, brentwood, morgan hill, fairfield, santa rosa, everyones really close on the temps and widespread freezing will take place once we get the cold in here and the wind develops and dies down. By friday, saturday well get some cloud cover in here and that will probably take care of it. Its going to get cold. The Palo Alto Based tesla says german auto safety authorities found no safety defects. They had opened an investigation into the model s following reports of three fires in the electric cars battery packs. Tesla says it received a letter from germany. They found no manufacturing defects that could have caused the fires. Two of the fires happened after the electric cars struck debris on the road. A third fire happened after a crash in mexico. A u.
