Meeting here in oakland we heard from the victim of a recent mob style robbery who urged bart officials to make safety a top priority. Its saddening right now to not see more proactive work going on by bart as a whole to improve what is your rider ship. You can see that going down and part of that i have to believe is because of the safety issues and the lack of protective measures that are taken right now for the riding public. Reporter thats rusty, one of the speakers at todays meeting that was focused on safety. This was the bart board of Directors Committee focused on safety. Now he said he was attacked and robbed back in april when a group of more than 50 young people stormed a train, stealing purses, bags and cell knowns from a number of passengers. He called on bart to release video of the crime. Bart is still weighing whether to make it public. Bart hired a police chief. He told the board that his department has deployed a robbery Enforcement Team focusing on certain hot spots around the system. He laid out a plan to fast track the hiring of 40 new officers to create a more visible Police Presence at stations and on board trains. I think we can make improvements in terms of crime. I do believe that crime overall in bart is relatively low when you consider we cover four counties, soon to be five. If we were compared to a city in america with the number of riders that ride bart every single day we would probably be one of the safest cities in america. Reporter also today the chief facing some tough questions about new crime data thats come out showing a spike in violent sexual crime on bart property. During the first half of this year there have been seven rapes reported on bart property. Thats the same number reported for all of 2015 and 2016 combined. There have been 28 Sexual Assaults reported on the bart system so far this year. Thats the same number we saw during all of last year. As for the issue of that surveillance showing that mob style take over robbery at the bart station in april barts board of directors said today they will be weighing whether to make that video public and there will be a discussion that happens at the next board. That shooting happened at Booker T Anderson park near cutting boulevard on may 18th. As they investigated officers learned a 20yearold had gotten into an argument at the park and was shot. She was transported to a nearby hospital where she later died. Police worked the safe street task force to arrest the 15 yearold boy from el sorito. He faces murder charges. 24 hour patrols are underway at a popular tourist spot after a man was shot and killed sunday morning. Lee martinez talked to people who knew the victim. A 71yearold, ed french lived a mile from the top of twin peaks. Was likely taking photographs for his work scouting sites for commercials on sunday morning when he was attacked for for his camera. A jogger heard a gun shot and ran to help. Police on patrol arrived but it was to late. The motive was likely robbery. His camera was gone. Friends and colleagues described him as a mentor and friendly person who would not have fought back against a robber. He was a great friend of all of ours. He was he was a steward and mentor. He was a lovely guy. Always had a great style. Even in the face of sometimes great adversity. Some of the challenges we face can be a little daunting and ed always had a way of doing it with grace. The Sheriffs Department is investigating the death of a san jose woman who fell off a beach side cliff. It happened yesterday at about four at davenport beach. The drop was estimated to be 100 feet. Officials were eventually able to get the body from the steep cliff by helicopter. An investigation is now underway as to how she fell. In the north bay firefighters and hazmat crews worked to clean up a spill near highway 101. How that liquid is extremely toxic. Reporter firefighters were dealing with a level one acid. A vehicle carrying it on the overpass last four one gallon jugs of the acid as that vehicle turned left on to the northbound 101 onramp.
