What happened earlier this morning and backed up traffic for hours, there was a tragic fatal motorcycle accident, killed a motorcycle rider and shook up drivers on the freeway as well. When we arrived on scene the motorcycle was still here. So was the deceased rider. We dont know his name. The chp says its a man in his early 20s. The motorcycle was a blue yamaha. This happened before 9 15. Officers say the motorcycle rider was splitting lanes on northbound 101 and sideswiped a black chevy suv. The motorcycle rider lost control and ended up tumbling down in the number three lane where he was run over by a flatbed pickup truck. Emergency crews responded quickly but could not save the riders lives. It is legal to split lanes. However, we want them to do it safely. We dont know what was the cause of the crash yet. We do put a lot of responsibility on the motorist. We have seen a lot of motorcycles split lanes. We want to make sure that the responsibility is shared between the motorcyclist and the motorist. Northbound 101 traffic backed up from the 237 interchange up to this point here in the oregon expressway. All lanes are now open on northbound 101. A strike involving Santa Clara CountyCourt Workers is into his second day. Hundreds of people walked off the job yesterday at courthouses across the county. The workers are janitors to court clerks and processors. They are demanding higher wages. They say they are short staffed and its been eight years since they had a raise. We spoke with the president of the union. She cas candid about her personal feelings. To be honest, i am live with my mom right now. I am 55 years old, and in a sense its kind of embarrassing. So over the past eight years its been very tough, and especially living here in this area. Its so expensive. And a lot of our members are hurting. The Union Workers have rejected the courts latest offer of a five and a half percent raise in the first of a twoyear deal. The main Sticking Point is that there is no increase in pay in that second year of the offer. Crews are getting a handle on the cold fire. Some Evacuation Orders were lifted. They say with all those firefighters they feel safe there. The strategy today is to keep that fire contained again to the north side of lake barryessa to the north of highway 128. The big factor is the weather. How will the weather cooperate today . Yesterday high winds pushed that fire and caused small spot fires. Firefighters hoping to keep that contained today. You see a couple of the kayakers there getting, in my estimation, a little too close. Wildlife experts say its better for humans to leave bears alone and give them some space. That bear clearly has no fear of people. So do not help wildlife. Do not feed wildlife. Do not go take a selfie with the wildlife. It can be incredibly dangerous. Its estimated that there are 250 to 300 wild black bears in the lake tahoe region and those encounters are likely to be more frequent as the bears water sources have dried up because of the drought. They are coming out into populated areas. They have a warning that people should never try to get between a bear and her cubs. Dont mess with mama bear. We know how the late start to the crab season affected the catch. The state reports the preliminary crab catch for the season was twothirds of a normal year. The numbers show people were paying less fon crab than they did that they did buy than they have in years past. The dungeness crab season usually starts in november but to opened in spring this year after inspections showed a high level of toxins in crab caught off the Northern California coast.
