traffic from another live camera actually skyfox. this is the bay bridge. of course, you can see the traffic backup there extending all the way into the east bay as a result of this accident. just a huge backup on the friday night a nightmare for drivers trying to get into the city. again, all the resulting from an accidents on 101 where the dump truck collided with a muni bus and the truck overturned killing the driver. two lanes of southbound 101 are shut down, two lanes open, drivers squeezing by and you can see this huge backup on this friday night. another look at our drive time traffic map. you can see all the red there through san francisco. again, this suggests and shows a very, very slow commute from the bay bridge south on 101 and traffic is heading north in the other direction past the accident site because the medical examiner on scene and the wreckage is still on scene. it's going to take some time to clear that up. we are working to get more information. when twitter and ktvu.com in the east bay students at uc-berkeley are on alert after a string of robberies near the campus police say at least five robberies have happened in just the past week and that the same robbers may be involved in these cases. ktvu crime reporter henry lee reports from the newsroom. >> reporter: based on the timing and locations of these robberies, police say the same crew may be responsible. now police are urging students to take precautions. over the past week, five college aged students near uc- berkeley have been robbed. police are hoping others don't fall victim especially if they are distracted by the stress of school or the devices in their hands. >> i see a lot of pedestrians casually glancing at their phones or other electronic devices, and, um, i worry. i worry that they are vulnerable to theft or attack. >> reporter: robbers have already targeted students, four in the neighborhood north of campus, one south of uc- berkeley. some of the robbers engaged the victims in conversation before stealing or trying to steal their backpacks or phones. some of the victims were hit or attacked. other students fought back, scaring off the robbers. all the victims were walking alone near campus. >> they are perceived by many to be a relatively attractive target. >> reporter: we saw this student transfixed as she wrote a message on her cell phone. i told her that someone could have stolen her device. >> i feel like technology is definitely, like, distracting and can be, like, dangerous. >> reporter: i asked if she might stay off her phone while walking. >> yesterday, i was texting and i almost ran into someone. so i think i might. >> reporter: besides being alert, police urge students to walk in groups or to call 642- walk to get escorts from students like ronald and alec who are community service officers with the uc-berkeley police. >> our objective is to be sure everyone gets home safe. we have night safety shuttles, as well. we provide a uniformed presence. we have access to police radios. we know what's going on. we know the streets like the back of our hands. >> reporter: bottom line, students need to be aware of their surroundings. when i was a cal student i would keep my head on a swivel make sure no one was following me. another tip, be careful of pretext questions. a robber might ask what time is it or where is the nearest bart station. they are just trying to gauge your willingness to potentially become a victim. henry lee, ktvu fox 2 news. >> that's a great point, henry, how they come up and ask you some question kind of sizing you up. then they try to rob you. >> reporter: i have been telling students when i give talks you might run in the opposite direction because they don't expect that. but you know, the moment you stop, someone else coming at you in the bushes potentially and they might rob you. >> henry lee in the newsroom, thank you. a man and woman in oakland are in the hospital tonight after being attacked and mauled by a pit bull. the attack happened around 0 this morning in the yard of a home on 63rd near bancroft avenue around 10 a.m. the pit bull attacked the woman from a neighbor's yard biting her and killing her dog. the man heard screaming and tried to use a mop to get the dog to stop and he was knocked down and mauled. animal services took the two dogs into quarantine. it's unclear if one or both pit bulls took part in the attack. the man and the woman were taken to the hospital and are listed now in stable condition. new information tonight about a series of crimes on twin peaks in san francisco. the latest involves a driver who apparently tried to run down a police officer just this morning. at lookout area, it's very popular with photographers and tourists because of the stunning view of the city and the bay. tom vacar tells us police are warning people to be on alert. reporter: from skyfox you can see that numerous police vehicles responded to the twin peaks western observation area. at 11 a.m., an sfpd police car saw a suspicious vehicle with a person or persons who may have been casing the vehicles of people on twin peaks viewing the city. >> officers were in the twin peaks area conducting an investigation. we are not releasing at this point what exactly led them to the suspect vehicle. >> reporter: soon thereafter, the suspect driver aggressively maneuvered the vehicle. >> during that process, it did strike another victim vehicle and attempted to run over an sfpd officer. >> reporter: soon after the confrontation, an ambulance stood by. >> thankfully, in this case, the officer was not struck. but it is not the first incident, especially in recent weeks, where an officer has been hurt on the job. >> reporter: the fact is the police are always refining their patrol and enforcement patterns. very often, you will find them in highly popular tourist areas. sometimes uniformed, many times not uniformed. sometimes, the bad guys learn the hard way that they are in fact there. >> it was just shocking. it was probably --i thought it was a tourist or something. it's just not --i don't see this happen often in san francisco. >> reporter: police say finding the driver is a high priority. >> there have been several instances of officers being injured on the job, especially in recent weeks. we have one officer who was run over on his bicycle. we have another officer who was shot by another individual on halloween night. we also have multiple instances in which sfpd officers are being attempted to be attacked. >> reporter: the police have a lot more information on this case than they can release, but it appears they were up there looking for something when this incident happened. we'll have more as we learn it. tom vacar, ktvu fox 2 news. for the first time oakland mayor libby schaaf is responding to an internal report on the city's progress after the ghost ship warehouse fire. "2 investigates" first told but that report earlier this week and of promises that remain unfulfilled. ktvu's candice nguyen reports. reporter: the ghost ship warehouse reveals some dangerous oversights by the city of oakland. the mayor says this 17-page internal memo is proof of progress but there's a long way to go before the city delivers on its promises. mayor schaaf invited me into her office to clarify what oakland has accomplished since the fire and what needs work. the city plans to more than double staff of inspectors although no additional inspectors are working just yet. the fire department is catching up on a backlog of over 1,000 overdue inspections and oakland plans to have a database. they will give each case attention. we asked how that's possible. >> how does the city plan to do that if it's also battling a severe staffing shortage. we have put the fee structures in place to address the staffing shortage, that we are doubling and tripling the number of fire inspectors. >> this question is for the fire chief. is that enough for you to accomplish your goals at the fire department? >> we projected that we believe that's going to be sufficient amount to cover all the inspections we are required to do, absolutely. >> reporter: the mayor's main goals have been to bring unpermitted buildings up to code while avoiding displacing people. one of the biggest challenges they have seen is getting owners to come forward and work with them to make their buildings safe. >> it's interesting how that ghost ship warehouse -- i would have thought they might have torn it down by now but it's still standing and the memorials outside of it are so touching. >> reporter: yeah. this is a very emotional but unfortunately slow process, as well. >> what comes next, with this report, we got this and there's still a lot of things that haven't been fulfilled. where do we go from here? >> reporter: they never gave us a timeline although they said this is a long-term thing. it's not overnight. but we have to keep holding them accountable. they hope to double the number of inspectors by the end of2018. >> they said there was a backlog of 1,000 inspections that needed to be done. how are they saying they are going to catch up? >> reporter: this morning we learned a little more about that they did hire an individual contractor and that person's only job is to catch up on these inspections and expect to catch up on 600 in the next few months. they have try to take some of the inspector's duties and give them to someone else so they can catch up. >> with all those inspections, how many more are there in addition to that? >> reporter: right now they have only identified 1,000 inspections that they know of. is there more possibly? right now they have 1,000 and that's what they are working on. >> all right. thank you. coming up here, more controversy on capitol hill over sexual misconduct claims against alabama senate candidate roy moore. as 6:30 we'll go live to capitol hill with calls for him to step aside as others come to his defense. >> i am furious to see these women come out and lie for personal gain. >> all right. i tell you what it's a milestone here in oakland. one year ago, we started the barbershop forum. tonight is the anniversary party. i have a live report coming up just ahead. >> breaking news in san francisco, this is the accident scene on southbound 101 and near the hospital curve near the cesar chavez off-ramp there. a dump truck overturned killing the driver. we are panning out now as skyfox takes a live look at the monumental traffic jam that's occurred because of that accident there in the southbound lanes of highway 101. it extends through the city there on the bay bridge. this is creating a huge delay for drivers trying to make their way south. to lanes are open at this hour but again, one driver was killed. a muni bus also involved in this, a big traffic jam on this friday night. >> stay with us. we'll be right back. l be right back. how's it going down there? that's good. lica misses you. i'm over it though. (phone hangs up) ♪ ♪ yeah i love you too. ♪ ♪ tonight we are celebrating the anniversary of the first barbershop forum to host conversations in the community and bridge the gap between law enforcement and citizens. it all started last year at a barbershop in san leandro and since then, it has spread to six different bay area cities in three counties. tonight's anniversary celebration is about giving back to the community as the movement looks forward. paul chambers is the host of the barbershop forums. he is in west oakland tonight. paul, congratulations. this has really taken off and it's making a difference. >> reporter: i barely heard the introduction. i heard you say something about making a difference. that it is. look behind me. it has grown. we started this off a year ago in san leandro. we actually started in october. but we decided to have the anniversary in november. the reason why we decided november is because that is the month that we actually aired our first one on ktvu. over the time we have had a lot of people join us. we went to six different cities. we went to san francisco, san leandro, hayward, antioch, i'm forgetting a couple, hayward, antioch, oakland of course, and san francisco. we also went to san francisco juvenile hall. it's a night you guys i got a really surprise that one person that we talked to in the juvenile hall was really touched by so much he came out here tonight and will also talk to us. we have a special guest over here. we have -- bobby has with him oakland's chief. thank you for showing up. >> how are you? >> fantastic. tell us about it. why are you here? you support it but just why did you show up tonight? >> this is the essence of partnership and building relationships and i am so please the. i wouldn't miss it. i'm here to support our team, opd and every other police agency who has come out here and the community and this is what it's all about. paul, thank you for being a leader among us. it's really appreciated. >> reporter: i appreciate that tremendously. thank you for showing up. you didn't know i was going to call you out here. i apologize. [ laughter ] >> reporter: bobby him and two other men started this. lieutenant, is this what you thought it would be at the end? >> we really didn't envision this when it started but i'm glad we did because this is a success that we're trying to mirror in this community in our communities and other agencies that participation, opening up community involvement and trust. this is great community involvement here. this is community policing at its best. it's working and to continue the dialogue that. we are giving thanks for what we did over the last year and what we are doing moving forward with the barbershop for hum. >> we are going back to every, single city. richmond was a city i forgot earlier. we are going back and go more with the juvenile halls. >> we are going back to san francisco juvenile hall. alameda county juvenile hall. we are getting interest in stockton, sacramento and so it's growing and we just want to keep that momentum growing and keep it positive and have solutions. every time we have a forum, we have solutions at the end of it and we have some of those solutions at the end. we have some of the youngsters that were in the san francisco juvenile hall that were incarcerated. now they're out and they are at forum tonight. that's the momentum that we want to keep going. >> reporter: thank you, lieutenant. thank you, chief. >> he is the best. >> reporter: i know we have to wrap up. it's also about food. let me get through here really quick. i have to show you the food. it's all about eating with me. we have some barbecue -- they didn't put it out yet! they followed me! but there's some ribs. it's a good time. we have sandwiches and a lot of things were donated by local restaurants. so thank you for showing up. it's going to be until 8:00. we are at mandela parkway. say hi, have a good time and eat. >> it's outstanding work. paul, if you can hear us, what has stood out to you, what memory do you take away from the past year? >> reporter: it's the diversity that's changed. you remember when we sat down the first time on the set we talked about how it's come about, we have got more women involved, we have people of all different races, different varieties, it's a rainbow type of thing situation right now. that was the one of the things to express. it was mostly black men. it's grown. there are women, black, white, latino, asian, everyone is here all under the umbrella to make things better and make a big difference in our community. >> you will keep it going as long as you can? really? really? really? really? really? see zero in a whole new way. get zero down, zero deposit, zero first month's payment, and zero due at signing on select volkswagen models. now with the people first warranty. two young children died today in southern california after a crash involving a los angeles county sheriff's patrol car and two other vehicles. authorities say the deputies were responding to an emergency call about a gunshot victim last night in east l.a. and that's when the crash happened. five pedestrians were hit. the deputy's car hit two boys and their mother. both children who were 7 and 9 died. their mother is in critical condition. one of the other cars involved in the accident hit the other two people. no word tonight on their conditions. the man who escaped from a mental hospital in hawaii an caught a flight to the bay area appeared at an extradition hearing today in san joaquin county. police arrested randall saito in stockton on wednesday. we find out what happened in court today and what's next for saito. reporter: randall saito dressed in a red jumpsuit and shackles. >> you are charged with escaped in the second director. >> reporter: in san joaquin county court today facing charges for his escape. >> i really don't want to go back to hawaii. >> reporter: he had been in a mental hospital in hawaii for more than 30 years acquitted for murder by reason of insanity. >> i couldn't find some kind of job or something. >> reporter: he gave an interview from his jail cell about the woman he killed. >> i stabbed her, i lost it. i ended up killing this woman stabbing her to death. >> reporter: saito says he wanted to escape the mental hospital to prove he can live in society without hurting anyone. >> they are detaining me for no good reason. this is my life. i'm 59 years old. i have been there since 1981. and they tell me directly, welcome to your new home. you're going to die here. >> reporter: but in court, the judge set a date for a hearing. we asked the district attorney if saito was just trying to buy time to avoid extradition. >> it's a stall tactic, an extra seven days for him or 10 days for him so i guess he is willing to enjoy the lovely california weather over hawaii. >> reporter: saito has family in stockton. but he is in a high security area of the jail considered a flight risk. ktvu fox 2 news at 6:30 is up next with controversy on capitol hill. >> the people of alabama understand what's going on here. >> up next, at 6:30, we'll go live to washington as roy moore's wife defends the embattled senate candidate amid allegations of sexual misconduct. >> also ahead tonight, a bay area company shutting its doors for good leaving artists, inventors and business owners scrambling to find a new place to work. >> and we have been telling but that deadly accident on 101 near hospital curve. two lanes of 101 are still shut down. you see the monumental backup there. those are the southbound lanes heading towards 280. and the airport in san francisco. also, as we go to the bay bridge toll plaza, the backup extends all the way across the bridge. you look here at the backup there at the toll plaza, it looks like a morning commute. try and find a different way into the city if you are heading into the city tonight. what if there was only one emoji? now what if there was only one mattress? one is not a choice. choose your mattress with tulo. everything you want in a bed, in a box. today's top stories, the driver of a dump truck died after colliding with a muni bus on southbound 101 in san francisco. the accident happened just before 4:00 this afternoon causing the truck to tip over and pin down that driver. two lanes of southbound 101 are still closed at this hour at hospital curve just before cesar chavez street. and there are huge traffic delays as a result in the area. the chp says it hopes to have the lanes open by 7 p.m. police are warning uc- berkeley students to be alert especially alone at night. over the past week five college students have been robbed near campus. police are urging students to walk in groups and be aware of your surroundings. san francisco police are searching for a driver who tried to hit an officer with a vehicle on twin peaks this morning. we are told the driver may have been casing cars belonging to people enjoying the view there. the suspect vehicle hit a car before the driver tried to hit an officer. the officer was not hurt and the driver sped away. you're watching ktvu fox 2 news at 6:30. today the white house once again said the people of alabama should be the ones deciding whether roy moore is elected to the senate. >> he is coming under increasing pressure from his own party to step aside following claims of sexual misconduct with minors years ago. ellison barber has live coverage from washington. ellison. >> reporter: president trump tweeted just last night that what al franken did was essentially disgusting. he condemned al franken. but when it comes to roy moore, the only insight we have had into the president's thinking has come from his press office and as you said, press secretary sarah huckabee sanders said today that he thinks the voters of alabama should decide who is their next senator. but beyond that, we haven't heard from the president. one person in alabama we know is supporting roy moore, his wife kayla. >> the people of alabama understand what's going on here. reporter: on the steps of the alabama state capital the wife of embroiled candidate roy moore promised supporters and critics her husband won't drop out of the senate race. >> the "washington post" has called everybody that i have ever known for the last 40 years. >> reporter: dozens of women stood next to moore as she defended her husband's character. some stepped forward to attack his accusers. >> i would also like to say as a woman that i am furious to see these women come out and lie for personal gain. >> reporter: sexual harassment continues to be a topic of conversation in washington. lawmakers are pushing to make the complaint process against congressional members more transparent. >> in the last 20 years, there have been 260 settlements at a cost to the taxpayers of this country of $15 million. >> reporter: kirsten gillibrand the new york senator who holds hillary clinton's former seat tells the "new york times" in a pod cat interview that bill clinton should have stepped down amid monica-gate. >> i think that's the appropriate response. but, um, i think things have changed today and i think under those circumstances, there should be a very different reaction. >> reporter: if moore wins his race, majority leader leader mitch mcconnell said he would immediately go before the senate ethics committee. if that happens he could have some company. democrats and republicans have called on the ethics committee to investigate the allegations against al al franken as well. tax reform will be taken up after the thanksgiving holiday. the senate tax measure passed the finance committee last night. and today on twitter, president trump called on democrats to get on board. the president wrote: >> the house passed their own version of tax reform which will now have to be reconciled with the senate bill. >> safe to say the president will not be pleased if he gets snnokerred by the senate again? >> i think the american people won't be pleased. they will lose the most. a nonpartisan analysis of the senate bill found it would raise taxes on low and middle income taxpayers while giving significant tax breaks to wealthy americans. at least 6 republican senators have not said if they will support the senate tax bill which would be enough to prevent passage. tech shop a company with locations in san jose, san francisco, redwood city and across the nation announced this week that it's closing its doors for good. as ktvu's ann rubin reports now, that left artists, inventors and small business owners scrambling to find new space to do their work. >> reporter: she moved downtown just to be closer to tech shop. known as a maker space, it has a laser cutter and other industrial machinery she needed for her souvenir and jewelry business but couldn't afford on her own. >> it's, you know, where i -- my business was born and where i work on my business. it was pretty much everything for the business. >> reporter: but wednesday everything changed when tech shop announced it was filing for bankruptcy and closing its u.s. locations. the ceo says the company hasn't been profitable. he said: as makers we must learn from our mistakes. for those who use the space many of whom paid in advance the news came without warning. >> then they all closed down same time, same day, no notice, no way for us to get our stuff out in and organized manner and wind down and find alternate arrangements right before the holidays. >> reporter: the city of san jose had worked hard to woo and keep tech shop downtown. now they are hoping others can fill the void. >> hopefully, we'll be able to connect people who are looking for this kind of support resources that tech shop provided to existing or new providers. that's how silicon valley works. >> reporter: still, those involved with tech shop they say were blindsided, leaving thousands of personal property equipment and at least one robot from estonia trapped inside. even employees said they didn't know it was coming. john coleman was offered a job as an instructor last week >> i was looking forward to it. a little disappointed but, you know, that's the way life goes, you know? [ laughter ] >> we're not competing against streaks. >> i'm sure he has been reminded how many times in a row they have not won the axe. >> i would love to bring the axe back to berkeley. >> we are all for exampled on playing this game, coming out with a win, keeping the axe for our team. >> reporter: the 2017 big game build-up typically spirited, from the battle of the bands to the big sale on one campus the chopping rally, on the other the burial. >> ashes to ashes, dust to dust. >> reporter: but the pregame narrative is atypical. major ramifications for both teams. cal sitting on five victories this season, six is the magic number. >> we get the win, play the bowl game, guarantee a post- season game. >> reporter: stanford's incentive bigger, win and keep pac-12 title hopes alive. >> we don't want to be focused on all the different scenarios. we want to play good football. >> there he goes, mccaffrey through the line! >> reporter: that combination could make this big game one for the ages. >> everybody involved knows what kind of game this is going to be. >> one of the greatest rivalry games in college football. >> it's huge. it's an honor to be part of this historic tradition. >> it's a big game. all those pictures we seen as little kids. >> i'm fully aware of the rivalry. >> i'm excited to get my first crack at it see what we can do. >> kickoff tomorrow at 5:00 here on ktvu. meantime, stanford basketball team playing at home for the fourth time in a week. and multiple cardinal players out with injuries. stanford up 12 seconds before halftime here, gresham, jr., wow, looked like steph curry on that with beats the buzzer there. team-high 15 off the bench but the cardinal built a big league and then gave it away. humphrey with the tip-in, fouled. stanford up 10, 43, 33. the huskies cut it to two. this was no cakewalk but then white comes off the screen knocks down the three. stanford pulls away from their 73-59 and next up number 9 north carolina on monday. two heavyweights slugged it out last night in boston. and really did feel like the play-off atmosphere. celtics 14 straight wins coming in, warriors 7 in a row. tied at 88, warriors with the phantom foul on kyrie irving. nobody could see why -- how draymond green fouled him. boston hit 38 free throws, shot 38 free throws to the warriors' 19 so that was one of the deals. the warriors didn't shoot the ball well in this game, either. but kevin durant a chance to tie it is off the mark. and great defense in this game. probably meant a little more to the celtics than the warriors, who win it 92-88. after the game steph only had nine points was asked about the chances of these two teams meeting down the road. >> very, very likely, right? they are the best in the east. obviously, until they beat cleveland who have done it three years in a row, we'll see. i heard the weather is great here in june. >> prior to game last week, steph made -- always makes these shots. we are used to them that teardrop typical but it's become a thing for this guy. samuel grubs of charlotte, north carolina with a cell phone into the moon roof and then he throws something here and guy is eating lunch or something. kind of annoying. but i guess this is his coup de gras for this guy again. samuel grubs on someone's car. and makes the shot. >> i would be annoyed. >> he was a plant. >> all part of the video. all right. good night.
