of 2-year-old jeremiah gathered here at the scene, this bus was towed away from the location. but just about an hour ago we scour for evidence. we are told that this bus driver will undergo drug and planting bombs in new jersey and new york. tonight we're learning that his own father reported him to the fbi. the elder rahami expressed concerns two years ago that his son might be a terrorist. ktvu cristina rendon in our newsroom tonight with more on all of this. cristina? >> reporter: well frank, federal prosecutors have now charged rahami with planting the bombs in new york and new jersey. the complaint contains information about the 28-year- old alleged motives and his desire to be a murder. >> reporter: they reported their own son to the fbi in 2014 after rahami returned from several trips overseas and turned violent hitting his mother and stabbing his brother. the fbi opened an inquiry, but found nothing. >> reporter: people that knew rahami growing up in new jersey said they did not expect anything. >> you want him to be invisible, he was invisible. he dressed nice. he didn't speak much. he wasn't the center of attention. when he did speak he was funny. >> reporter: rahami was captured after a shootout in linden, new jersey. investigators found a stained notebook containing extremist ramblings with reference to a killing back in a 2011 drone strike. the former u.s. army major hasan. >> this is horrific for police. >> reporter: the fbi do not believe that rahami is part of any terror groups following the weekend bombings at seaside park new jersey and manhattan's chelsea neighborhood that injured 29 people. bombs were also found at a train station in elizabeth, new jersey. rahami worked as an unarmed guard at private security companies. his wife left the u.s. days before the bombings and reportedly cooperating with officials in the united arab emirates. rahami's wife also filed for full custody of their son today. he also has a daughter from a previous relationship with his high school sweetheart. that woman told reporters that rahami was a bad father and hated america. frank? >> cristina rendon in our newsroom tonight, thank you. we have new information now on a two alarm fire that destroyed a home in san jose last night. fire officials say that the blaze was sparked by a resident who was deep frying a chicken in the backyard of the home near story and white roads in east san jose. flames reached 30 feet into the air. this afternoon fire officials said it was not a gas leak that fueled the fire as they initially reported, but rather a number of nearby propane tanks. >> those tanks did what they were suppose to do as they heat up to a certain level and then they begin to off gas. when that off gas happens, the propane got out and it was the ignition source, which literally torched up the trees and everything behind it. >> several nearby homes were evacuated because of the danger of an explosion. no one was hurt, but four people were displaced by that fire. now to developing news in northern sacramento where an air force jet crashed today. one pilot was killed, the other injured. the u-2 spy plane took off from beale air force base just after 9:00 this morning. it crashed a short time later. this is video of what was left of the plane. you can see the debris field. military officials spoke about the crash this afternoon. >> i'll share with you what i share with the pilots that these incidents while extremely tragic and hard for us to overcome, they are incidents that we do overcome. and i am confident that the u-2 squadrons here will come up stronger. >> the aircraft was on a training mission when something went wrong. the two pilots ejected and the plane went down. the air force says there is always a danger in the events of an ejection because you're essentially sitting over a bomb that shoots you out of the plane and that could be very dangerous. here is the exact location where the plane crashed in the sutter butte mountains in sutter county about 15 miles from beale and about 50 miles from sacramento. mike leery has our reports. >> reporter: this video taken from an eyewitness shows the u- 2 plane spiraling out of control. and then moments later this eyewitness video reveals the wreckage of the u-2 spy plane after slamming into the sutter buttes. >> you can tell that it exploded. >> reporter: chuck jones saw the plane was in trouble just moments before it crashed. but he also noticed something else in the sky. >> it appeared that over here at the initial blast we see one parachute coming down looking pretty small in nature. after we ran to the corner and came around on the road on the backside that's where we had seen the other two parachutes come down. >> reporter: the incident was witnessed by students at sutter high school. >> we saw a plane kind of spinning. >> the first thing i thought are the people okay? because i didn't know what happened. i saw smoke coming out. >> reporter: it caused a series of grass fires to erupt in the surrounding hills pushed by swirling winds. keeping firefighters busy mopping up hot spots. the u-2 spy planes are based at beale air force base. they are a critical weapon in the air force arsenal gathering digital and radar imagery from as high as 13 miles above the earth. the range of 6,000 miles. the one that crashed today is believed to be one of only five that were in operation. a critical loss. >> i've never seen anything like this ever. it was pretty devastating and very quick in the way it formed. coming up first new developments following a pair of attempted kidnappings in the east bay. the arrest that was just announced today. new information tonight on the attempted kidnapping of the woman in san leandro over two months ago. they made an arrest. the crime was violent, the suspect was seen pepper spraying the woman and trying to drag her into his car. >> ktvu heather holmes in the newsroom now with new information that the suspect had just gotten off parole in the crime that occurred. >> reporter: police held a news conference this afternoon to outline their details of the man's capture as they did not release his name or photo. but they did say that the 43- year-old suspect did not know the victim. that incident happened back on july 28 on washington avenue. investigators say that the man knocked a 23-year-old woman down dousing her with pepper spray before trying to drag her into the car. that's when a good samaritan on his way to work stepped in and helped her escape. >> the guy was a total coward and much bigger than her. she couldn't see, she was choking and still kept fighting. >> now, investigators said that they drove from orange county to san leandro just ten days after being discharged. >> we do have physical evidence from the orange county residence where he was living prior to fleaing the state. we have evidence inside that residence where he was staying out of state that does tie him to the crime here in san leandro, california. >> the suspect was arrested in detroit. he is now awaiting extradition back here to the bay area. >> heather, thank you. uc berkeley officials have issued a warning following a report of rape by a female student. police say that the victim reported being attacked earlier this month in a dorm. uc berkeley police are heading up the investigation just last week where a male student was arrested for another woman being raped in a dorm. and then back on september 10, three women reported sexual assaults during an electronic music show at the greek theater. >> now to the south bay where police in san jose are investigating a deadly shooting earlier today. officers responded to a 911 call and they found a man on the sidewalk along long bluff way neither golf course where he was shot at least once pronounced dead at the scene. still no word on his name or a suspect. san jose mayor said today that violent crimes have been rising and voters need to approve their measure to attract more officers to the force. >> the only way that we're going to be able to go ultimately is to get a handle on this challenge to be able to hire aggressively on this department to restore their department that requires getting the measures out to the goalline. >> they will present a negotiated agreement that includes better pension benefits for newly hired police officers. the san francisco city attorney's office has served subpoenas on the developers of the millennium towers high- rise, which is located in the south of market area. a 58-story condo tower. the problem is that it is sinking. ktvu tara moriarty tells us that millennium will cooperate with the investigation, but that they are pinning the sinking problem on a neighboring transbay terminal project. >> reporter: after weeks of silence about the sinking millennium tower, today their founders lashed out at their power authority for what they call reckless behavior. >> the behavior here is so outrageous. >> reporter: developers say despite it sinking more than 16 inches, it is 100% safe and city approved. the officials say that when they broke ground on the transit center next door, it compromised a foundation of the tower. >> if you dig a 60-foot hole and for six years dropping the water table by 20 feet on a major high-rise structure you're going to cause a problem. >> reporter: engineers say that dewatering is a process used on buildings like the transbay terminal and the tower, which are built on mud and landfill. take a coffee ground. this creates more stability like this one that you can see is a lot more firm. but if you pull out too much water, you can see that it affects everything nearby. >> the amount of dewatering is staggering. up to five million gallons per month. >> reporter: which will translate to 60 million gallons each year in 2011. now, they say that they have turned off the measuring devices as if to hide something. >> to shift the blame exclusively to the transbay joint powers authority is a fiction that defies fact. >> reporter: but the attorneys representing the millennium tower mark gray says that they should have anticipated the excavation. >> they should have designed a system anchored into bedrock that would have resisted the dewatering that they are now trying to use as an excuse. >> reporter: millennium as well as the sales force tower and the marriott marquee are not anchored in bedrock 200 feet down, but rather 80 feet into sand. the other buildings are just fine, putting millennium's bad neighbor creating the mess. in san francisco tara moriarty ktvu fox 2 news. also san francisco's mayor ed lee revealed dozens of affordable housing units today. the development is on beal street and some of the rooms have great views of the bay bridge. all of this is a collaboration between the city and the non- profit mercy housing california. the complex has 70 rental units set aside for low-income families and builders are breaking ground on another 120 affordable housing units set to open in 2018. one of the families that will be living there was forced out of their place when a landlord raised the rent. >> i see so many people and so many homeless people that i feel for them, you know, laying on the streets, i just feel like they are blessed, you know, not to be in that bad situation. and maybe that we could get more of these things happening in san francisco. >> the development was funded in part by proceeds from california's cap and trade program. which would charge companies for their carbon emissions. this is the first time that those proceeds have been used in san francisco to fund affordable housing. >> home prices will continue to climb across california. the number of homes sold statewide rose more than 5% in august from the year before. that's according to the research from logic. the median home price climbed about 5.8% to $432,000. the bay area median was up to $675,000 from about $642,000 a year ago. realtors say that high prices and few homes on the market continue to make conditions difficult for buyers. time is expected. the temperatures will be dropping off by several degrees this afternoon giving you a live look there at the low clouds right up against the coastline. we do have that marine layer back and anywhere from 1,500 to 1,000 feet. the on shore breeze is back as well. half moon bay in the low -- 60s. you go inland still a warm day, but nothing like yesterday. 89 in brentwood right now. 83 for livermore into the south bay we were 24 hours ago. 17 for santa rosa. around the bay 15 degrees. 10 in san jose and the inner east bay livermore down by 8. livermore hit 101 yesterday, so quite a difference this afternoon. as we have the high clouds at the coast, we have mid to high- level clouds that are streaming in from the south. that'll continue throughout the evening hours, but the cooldown is coming our way from a system over the north. and that is going to sink in and continue to bring us a cool down as we get into wednesday. the on-shore breeze right now 16 miles per hour in oakland, we have 18 miles per hour reported in fairfield. these winds are expected to pick up tomorrow as well. it could be a little breezy even over portions of monterey a red flag warning expected in and around the fire area. 55 degrees to start the morning in san francisco as well as oakland tomorrow morning. we'll wake up with partly cloudy skies, low clouds at the coast. 56 in concord and 60 degrees in antioch. tomorrow's numbers coming down even more. 80 degrees in antioch. that'll be one of the warmer spots. upper 70s in concord, livermore. heyward is going to see 68 for the afternoon. 68 in san mateo and 65 expected for san francisco. upper 70s santa rosa, upper 70s in morgan hill. temperatures will continue to fall as we get into the first day of autumn. i'll have a look at those numbers and the warm up to follow coming up in just a little bit. amazon is planning to use drones to make deliveries right to your doors. but the one tech company is already delivering packages and groceries. in san francisco today starship technology sent one of its delivery robots out on a trial run. amanda nelson snapped this shot as the robot delivered pastries to a customer in the city's richmond district. video from the company's website shows how the robot works. sensors and gps guide its way along sidewalks causing it to slow down at driveways or sidewalks. the company is based in london and already making deliveries with robots in england, germany, and switzerland. they plan to start trial runs of their delivery service in washington, d.c. some time this fall. samsung taking action after a recall over its exploding smartphones. the replacement phones now making their way to stores. the giant self-destruction against the dodgers. this rivalry is nothing new. later in sports, mark will show us how some people have speculated. >> she feels that brad in some way poses a danger to their six kids. and the reason that she believes involves weed and alcohol mixed with what she says is an anger problem that he has. as a result she says it is just dangerous to the kids the way that he is interacting. now she is asking for sole physical custody of these kids. that is unusual. usually people ask for joint custody, but she is saying sole custody with visitation to brad because she is concerned. now we have heard from people connected with brad who are telling us that this is just bologne that he is a very good dad, that he has never posed any kind of a danger. so i don't know how much of a dispute this is going to trigger, but they don't seem to be on the same page when it comes to this. >> is she saying at all that brad's alleged anger problems have been towards her in any way? >> no, absolutely not. it has nothing to do with her, just has to do with, you know, what she calls an anger problem with, you know, him smoking marijuana and drinking and then being around the kids. now, i don't know the nature of what danger she says that he is posing, but something happened. because she separated according to the legal papers that we got, she separated last thursday. on friday she went to see her lawyer and on monday they filed the divorce papers. so this happened very fast. something seems to have triggered this. by the way, it is not anything involving a third person or anything that he hooked up with an actress on the new movie set he's on, that's not true we're the ac transit bus struck and killed a 2-year-old boy this afternoon in oakland. the accident happened at 35th and penniman. a witness said that the boy ran into the street chasing a ball. the boy's mother ran after the toddler, but she couldn't stop them. the bus driver will undergo the standard test for drugs and alcohol. the u.s. air force says that one pilot is dead and another injured following the crash of the u-2 spy plane about 40 miles north of sacramento. both pilots ejected shortedly after the plane took off from the air force base. no word on what caused that crash or how badly that the second pilot was injured. but they have confirmed that the accident happened during a training mission. the u-2 can fly up to 70,000 feet. that's twice as high as a passenger jet. >> there are new details tonight on the man now charged with setting off bombs in new york and new jersey that injured 29 people over the weekend. the fbi says that a notebook found when ahmad khan rahami expressed his desire to be a terrorist. and after rahami allegedly hit his mother and stabbed his brother, his father turned him over to the fbi. but they found no ties to terrorism. you're
