found locked in an suv. she was alive but starving and abused. today investigators laid out the chain of events they believe led to the children's deaths. as ktvu's ann rubin explains, prosecutors may seek the death penalty against the two people they think were responsible. >> reporter: authorities now believe that whatever happened to 6-year-old shaun tara and 3-year-old delylah tara began in salinas likely at this house on fremont street. it was sunday when the children's bodies were found in a plastic container in a storage unit in redding. >> preliminary autopsy results determine the cause of death of the two children was as a result of ongoing physical abuse. >> reporter: a 9-year-old girl was also found abused but alive. authorities in salinas held a news conference this afternoon to announce they'd be taking the lead on the case. >> this is certainly in my 32-year career the most egregious child abuse homicide case i've ever seen. >> reporter: so in addition to charges of torture, they'll be seeking two counts of first degree murder with special circumstances against 39-year-old tami huntsman and 17-year-old gonzalo curiel who police call her live-in companion. the special circumstances allow authorities to seek the death penalty. >> you're asking me of does it bother me, i want to tell you it bothered every law enforcement officer who's observed the condition of the children and the 9-year-old survivor. >> reporter: authorities say there were as many as six children living in the home in salinas seemingly under huntsman and curiel's care. police are still trying to determine the relationship among them. at the home today huntsman's relatives placed balloons outside saying only this about what's happened. >> i want you to know those were the most precious babies in the world and that's all i can tell you. and they didn't deserve this. >> reporter: authorities expect to file charges in the case friday or monday. meanwhile the salinas police officers association has opened a bank account and officers have donated their own money in hopes of helping the survivors. ann rubin, ktvu fox 2 news. new at 6:00, a life saving program at ucsf has been put on hold after a kidney donor dies. that means people nervously awaiting procedures of their own have an even longer wait ahead. ucsf medical center has suspended its living donor program for kidney transplants. the hospital says the suspension is voluntary after a kidney owner died following an operation in november. doctors still don't know why the donor died but the person who received the kidney is doing well. we learned about what happened at the hospital after setting out to do a story on a bay area vice president who was set to donate a kidney to a former student tomorrow but now as ktvu's noelle walker tells us, that procedure is on hold. it's a story you'll see only on fox 2. >> reporter: this is a christmas story. it's about the spirit of giving. sometimes the best gift are the ones you won't find under the tree. >> it's a gift freely given that i'm happy to give. >> reporter: christine is vice president at sacred heart in san francisco. she's been preparing to give the ultimate gift to a former student, kelvin sanders. >> all the different medications. >> reporter: right now kelvin's life is measured in pills. >> it was a tough pill to swallow. >> reporter: last year kelvin got a life-threatening diagnosis. >> end stage renal disease. my kidneys failed on me. >> reporter: and doctors have no idea why. a standout student and athlete, kelvin's focus changed from fighting for yardage on the football field to fighting for his life. every night he connects a lifeline to a dialysis machine where a night stand should be. the family apartment is a warehouse of medical supplies. >> it's tough. >> reporter: and god works in mysterious ways. kelvin's family started a facebook page to find a donor. turns out he knew the donor all along. >> yes. gave me the best christmas gift anyone can ask for. >> i'm glad he can use my gently used kidney. >> reporter: the vice principal was set to donate her kidney tomorrow until she got the call. ucsf's donor program suspended the transplant. >> it will happen when it needs to happen. >> reporter: now it will happen in the next two weeks with christine and kelvin at separate hospitals. >> it's just very emotional. >> reporter: the ultimate christmas gift will offer a new start for a new year. >> i hope it gives him all the options he wants. >> reporter: it's already giving kelvin something priceless. >> it's given me hope. >> reporter: no elle walker, ktvu fox 2 news. >> christine texted us a couple minutes ago. she says the surgery has been rescheduled for december 22nd. she'll be at another hospital. as for ucsf, officials there say a voluntary suspension is common when a donor dies. the hospital released a statement saying in part the safety and well-being of our patienticize our top priority and every effort is being made to understand what happened. we are deeply saddened by this tragic event. san francisco school officials say today they received a threat similar to the ones that shut down schools in los angeles this week and in dallas. administrators say they received a threatening e-mail last night and immediately contacted the police and the fbi. the threat was deemed to be not credible and the district decided to keep schools open. parents were told of the threat by e-mail, text message and by phone. >> i think the world is kind of weird right now. we've got all kinds of stuff going on and people do weird things. >> all of the 130 schools in the district were searched as a precaution and nothing was found. similar bogus threats have been made this week. the woman who confronted muslims praying in a bay area park has been charged with a hate crime. the incident was recorded on a fel phone. -- on a cell phone. the video shows the woman throwing coffee on to one of the men. denise slader told ktvu she saw the group praying at lake chabot park and wanted to tell them about christ. she claims she acted in self-defense. the alameda county district attorney has charged slader with battery as well as a hate crime. traffic and congestion are the worst they've ever been in the bay area. that's according to a new report released today by the metropolitan transportation commission. people spend 40% more time stuck in traffic in 2014 than they did back in 2010. they also unveiled their list of the 10 worst locations for traffic in the bay area and take a look. the westbound stretch of i-80 that goes from hercules to oakland is at the top of the list. number 2 is 880 southbound through alameda county in the morning. 3 is 101 southbound in santa clara county at night and number 4, 101 to i-80 eastbound getting on the bay bridge and the eastbound direction at night. the mtc says congestion is concentrated in a few corridors mainly on routes as you would believe, in or out of silicon valley and san francisco. it's one of the most hyped movies of the year. star wars, the force awakens, officially opens tonight. ktvu's tom vacar talked to people lining up to experience the latest movie in a series that speaks to generations of audiences. tom joins us live at the century theater. >> when you consider what's going on in the world, the joy, the excitement, the anticipation here is palpable and everybody knows it. it's been seven years since the last star wars movie. the next star wars movie is now less than one hour away. >> reporter: it appears online reservations and advanced ticket sales have cut down on movie premier waiting lines. >> we're here mostly for the people and the experience of being in line, the excitement that gets built for the film before you get to see it. >> reporter: at oakland's grand lake, late this morning not a creature was stirring particularly because the 2d and 3d first showings were already long sold out. at the orinda theater, no lines, even though tickets were available. >> we're benefiting here in orinda being able to go and not deal with the crowds. >> reporter: that was good news for one woman who had seen all the star wars movies beginning with the first one in the theater far away and long, long ago. >> i just remember the excitement of the crowd. and everybody broke in to cheers and they did it in the beginning and the end. >> reporter: there have been seven star wars movies. two trilogies and one stand alone film. it's moviedom's most successful brand. >> it's personal for a lot of people. a lot of people attach it to their childhoods. it just carries forward. >> it resonates with the youth. it's a good story and something that it's lasted generations. we have the fans that are parents and kids. >> the second episode to be released in 2017, the third in 2019. one oddity. this is the only star wars trilogy film that was not released in may. one woman born well after the saga started is nonetheless predicting how well this episode will do compared with the last seven. >> i suspect it will be better received than the prequel trilogy but probably not as good as the original trilogy. >> the doors are actually about 5 minutes from opening here. then will come the rush for the popcorn for the gold rush that's become accused of gunning down seven people at a christian vocational school in oakland is not competent to stand trial. one goh is accused of carrying out a mass shooting in april 2012. today an alameda county judge said goh suffers from schizophrenia and cannot assist in his own defense. a trial could still happen, saying justice is not denied. it is just delayed. goh will remain at a psychiatric treatment facility. chilling new details tonight in a sad case. a teenager is charged with killing a 9-year-old, his best friend's younger brother while that teen was staying at a family home. the accused killer cut off the power to the house before the attack. >> reporter: the fatal stabbing of 9-year-old jordan. the third grader was asleep when he was stabbed to death by his older brother's best friend. police testified that the defendant had initially considered killing his best friend. contra costa sheriff's deputies say they found a hunting knife and glove used by schultz. schultz, who had been staying with the victim's family, turned the power off and waited till everyone was asleep before the attack. >> he cut the power to the house, utilized gloves. distinguished between which victim he was going to use based on the size and strength of the individual and decided upon the most vulnerable victim in the house, a 9-year-old boy. >> reporter: as for a motive -- >> he believed that world war 3 was imminent in the somewhere near future, that opposed to it being a war between nations, it would be a war between nations. he would need to know what it was like to kill someone. >> reporter: cameras weren't allowed in court but through it all schultz showed no emotion. schultz put a hand over jordan's mouth, stabbed him in the chest and attacked him again because he didn't want anybody to wake up and hear him. the testimony was too much at times for the victim's father, john almgren, who along with friends and relatives sobbed in the gallery. the defense says schultz suffered from a delusional disorder, had been just released from a psychiatric facility and didn't have the intent to kill jordan, which is an element of first degree murder. prosecution says while he was troubled he knew right from wrong. >> he thought about killing and made that decision and wanted to know what it was like to kill. >> reporter: the boy, known as jordy, played local baseball for a pony team and loved the giants. >> a judge will determine whether there's enough evidence to hold schultz for trial. henry lee, ktvu fox 2 news. an emotionally charged memorial this afternoon for a man shot and killed by san francisco police. >> shoot me 21 times and get a paid vacation. walk away from an ugly situation, you get annihilated. >> police say he had stabbed someone and wouldn't put down his knife but the community expressed outrage over cell phone video of the shooting. today the family attorney spoke of a young man who was just turning his life around. >> you don't have to travel to ferguson. you don't have to travel to baltimore. [ inaudible ] >> woods' mother says he was recently released from prison and had just landed a job at ups. those that knew him say they'll continue to fight for justice and are continuing to rally outside the hall of justice tomorrow morning. cal trans shows the recent demolition of the old bay bridge pier with an update on the environmental impact of the operation. that implosion happened underwater but video shows what happened above the surface of the water. cal trans says scientists spent years planning the demolition to avoid any impact to the environment and sea life. the agency says engineers got it right. no protected species were hurt or killed. >> we covered all of that live when it happened and it's so great to hear how well it went. >> years of planning paid off. it's embarcadero is lit up. beautiful night. there's clouds throughout much of the bay area at this hour. mostly cloudy all the way south through san mateo. tomorrow morning it's mostly cloudy everywhere. this is the first system that comes in. this area wants to move in as we head in to tomorrow night. that means rain in the forecast for the afternoon commute. there's the cloud cover working its way south toward the san jose area and right now it's cloudy in san leandro. cloudy in concord. clouds will thick en up tonight. keep the temperatures overnight a little bit warmer. the clouds will. we've had some very cool overnight lows with these clouds that will stay in the 30s and 40s tonight instead of the 20s. current temperatures are in the 50s. tomorrow in san francisco 7 a.m., got mostly cloudy conditions. watch what happens around lunchtime. sun tries to come out then showers start showing up far north bay around noon time. that's heelsburg area. watch as we get to the afternoon we definitely got more showers. heavier rain will end up being on monday at this point. the forecast for rainfall accumulations through saturday, anywhere from half inch to three quarters of an inch. places like oakland, redwood city, half an inch. heavier spots like san francisco maybe .75. over 3/4s of an inch. here's the 5-day forecast. a little bit of wet each day of the 5-day which is great
