>> speaking in spanish he canonized father junipero serra the founder of the california mission system. >> father junipero serra he was the embodiment of a church which goes forth, a church that sets out to bring everywhere the reconciling, tenderness of god. >> the pope's decision to declare father junipero serra a saint is seen by some as a needed acknowledgment. tens of thousands people gathered for the canonization mass that basilica of the national shrine of the immaculate conception. that is the largest catholic church in the nation. among those who attended were from the bay area. ktvu's tara moriarty was inside the basilica for the mass. can you explain what it was like? >> reporter: well, when the pope arrived he did a lap in his pope mobile and he was all smiles waving to the crowd. everybody who was in the crowd lit up. they were so excited to see him. a day here at the basilica that people will never forget. [ singing ] >> reporter: it contained a bone fragment from father junipero serra. his cousin did a reading. the inclusion of the indians in the mass was very significant because most did not want father junipero serra to become a saint. we want to look at this photo. this was taken after the mass inside the basilica. the indians were invited to meet pope francis alone. he said it was a proud moment. he kissed the poem's hand and ring. saying it was magical. >> he came in. quietly. and went one by one, there was a translator whispering what we said, and then he greeted everyone. i got two rosaries and then i thanked him. and then i said holy father, can you come to san francisco. >> reporter: he says he would like pope francis to come to california so he could look at all of the missions. he wants to go on a tour with him because he was trying to raise money to revamp the missions. you can see this is the basilica. most of the people are gone. they are beginning to leave. this is the platform right here. flip around here and we will show you. this is where the media was. and as you can see most people are gone. some people have live shots they will be doing across the country. we met people from everywhere and a lot of us are tired. this was a long day but pope francis showed quite a bit of stamina. tomorrow he is going to be addressing congress. live in walked, tara moriarty, back to you -- in washington, d.c., tara moriarty, back to you. >> the pope kicked off his visit to washington, d.c. at the white house. 15,000 invited guests, including religious leaders were all on hand to give him a warm welcome on the white house lawn. the president greeted the pope who was making his first visit to the united states. >> on behalf of the american people it is my great honor and privilege to welcome you to the united states of america. [ cheers and applause ] >> the president and the pope had a private meeting where they discussed a number of world issues including the refugee crisis and climate change. later in the day he held a francis' homily at the canonization mass. look for the video player. two teenagers had to be rescued from the water off ocean beach. they pulled them to shore. they are shaken up. a friend said they were up to their necks in the ocean and could not get back to shore. the fire department says ocean beach could be a dangerous place for anyone unfamiliar with rip tides. >> if you are not a good swimmer don't go out all the way out. they have signs posted warning people about the riptides. >> the two were taken to the hospital. it is believed they were visitors to san francisco. now to the newest group of jail guards. this comes four weeks after three santa clara county jail deputies were accused of killing an inmate. ktvu's john sasaki tells how that led to how this group was taught. >> the 51 deputies marched into their graduation ceremony. the start of the day knows the spotlight well. he played football for the miami dolphins. he spoke. >> i am proud to have grown with them as recruits and as a family. >> reporter: his mother couldn't be more proud. >> he is very committed to the community and also youth. making a difference, feeling he has an impact. >> the death of michael tyree on august 27, he was beaten to death by three santa clara jail deputies. >> we have to deal with people with mental health issues. it is another technique in dealing with people. >> reporter: the sheriff says starting with this class they now get 40 hours of additional training in dealing with with the mentally ill. >> the more training the better. in the past we have done training but this is the first time we put in the intervention training. >> reporter: he emphasized the need to treat the mentally ill more effectively. >> ifia can't communicate with them in -- if you can't communicate with them in a way they could understand -- [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: she says she is confident the changes will help. >> i feel like the department and the county really understand that there is an opportunity here to continue to improve services. >> reporter: they will start their jobs in two weeks. in san jose, john sasaki, ktvu fox 2 news. san francisco based ride sharing company uber will have a strong presence on both sides of the bay. uber is buying the sear's building in oakland with plans to occupy the top three floors. most of the street level will be dedicated to stores and restaurants that are needed. that will help revitalize the area. but the news is getting a mixed reaction from people who live there. >> i want there to be more businesses in oakland. i want oakland to thrive. that is fine with me. >> now i am worried about rents rising and it being really crowded down here. and how crowded the b.a.r.t. station will be. i am hesitant about all three -- about all three. new at 6:00 p.m. police are looking for a knife wielding drugstore robber. in this surveillance video he is seen jumping over-the- counter. he held a knife to the pharmacist and demanded a medication which another employee gave him. the suspect is white, in his 20s. 5'6" and a reddish tattoo near his right eye. a fire-year-old boy is safe after his father abducted him this morning. the sheriff's office says michael steele took his son by force at 4:30 a.m. this morning. investigators say he also assaulted two adults in the home before fleeing with the child. police say he drove to the sacramento area. by 7:30 a.m. he called authorities and told him where he was. he was arrested on suspicion of attempted homicide, domestic violence and child abduction. his son was taken to hospital for a injury he sustained to his hand. the death toll is rising from the valley fire. authorities confirmed a new set of remains found last night are presumed to be that of 66-year- old robert fletcher. he has been missing since the fire started. there is good news. the fire is now 80% contained. and federal help on the way for the victims of the valley fire. today the head of fema traveled to lake county to tour the burn area first hand. ktvu's cristina rendon with the plans in place to help victims pick up the pieces. >> reporter: changes are slowly happening in the after math of the valley fire but survivors know they have a long road ahead. >> getting better but you are starting to see the fake contractors, fake red cross. >> we lost everything. a process of restarting and applying for everything. >> reporter: now that president obama signed a disaster declaration officials are joining forces. >> it will take time and patience and effort. >> reporter: fema administrator toured the damage saying aid will go to the uninsured who have immediate needs. >> we can put money in in less than a day but they need to register with us so we can start the process. >> reporter: they already signed up 100 people at a shelter and if requested they may bring in temporary mobile homes for the homeless. >> we hope this doesn't happen anywhere else but if it does, they have to be ready to go. >> reporter: recovery will be a marathon. not a sprint. anderson springs will be allowed to go home tomorrow. this is video posted the day after the fire started of a man driving through flames to safety. because of the extreme fire danger there was mandatory evacuations, that will expire tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. water services are still not available. the lake county sheriff will close some roads tomorrow to make it easier for residents to return to their homes. >> the sheriff's office says suicide was the cause of the tassajara fire. they haven't explained how the fire started or identified the individual who died. they say they have a good idea who it is. the fire destroyed 12 homes and burned a thousand acres. it is 81% contained. our chief meteorologist bill martin now and talk about the weather. nice day today. seems like fire danger
