On to vehicles with people trapped inside. At about 9 30 last night the freeway was shut in both directions near broadway in burlingame after a crane hit a electrical tower. An rubin reports. Reporter ann rubin reports. Reporter the transmission tower is being taken down. But work to replace the lines out here is far from over. At 2 30 a p. M. 30 p. M. Lanes reopened, 4 30 the other lanes reopened. Terrible. Reporter this was the scene after a construction crew accidentally toppled a transmission tower sending high voltage power lines on to the overpass pedestrian bridge and cars on highway 101 trapping the people inside for hours. This is a very complicated situation with very high voltage so we need to do everything right. Reporter pg e crews rushed in grounding the wires, isolating them and beginning repairs. [ sirens ] reporter chp was forced to do this shut down 101 completely. It was heavy traffic and once we shut down the freeway everything stopped and all the cars piled up. Reporter drivers were told to take alternate routes. Those who didnt were backed up for miles. Anyone trying to get to the airport the giants game or work was stuck. Its been a nightmare. Im late for work. I didnt know but im actually about to go to an interview and i told the guy i would be there two hours ago and he is still waiting. This is bad. Reporter actually, pg e crews say the outcome was good, no injuries, no power lost. All drivers lost was time. Guess we should have picked a different day to come to san francisco. Reporter the headaches arent over. Authorities Just Announced 101 will be closed again sunday from 10 p. M. To 4 a. M. On monday so they can restring the power cables on to a temporary high voltage tower. Chp and traffic signage will direct drivers to alternates. Be prepared for potentially more gridlock. Thank you. Police say three people were sent to the hospital last night after the car they were anyone inn got caught in a gun battle on an oakland freeway about 11 15 northbound interstate 880 just south of the fifth avenue exit. Heres what the freeway looked like moments after that shooting last night. Police say when officers arrived, they found four people inside a car and two of them a man and woman suffering from gunshot wounds. One person had been hurt by shattered glass. The victims are reportedly expected to recover. A woman in another car was also hit by a stray bullet. She was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition. A confirmed case of legionnaires disease at san quentin prompted visits to be suspended today. At least one person a prisoner has been diagnosed with the illness. Thats a severe form of pneumonia. Three other inmates have been hospitalized with symptoms that are consistent with legionnaires. 45 other prisoners are under observation for the disease. None of those taken ill are said to be in critical condition. Legionnaires disease is carried through aerosol water such as steam, mist or moisture. The prison is still trying to determine the exact source of the illness. A fremont man went from roofer to supervisor today all thanks to the generosity of some trainingers. We first told but 75yearold richard yesterday. He spent the past three months working to repair his roof all by himself. A neighbor watched as richard would go up and down the ladders working endlessly to finish. That neighbor then posted a picture on social media asking for help and today, that help arrived. A family says he is able to communicate now using a thumbs up or down sign and can breathe for short times on his own off a ventilator. A neighbor organized tomorrows fundraiser. In new orleans, residents marked a decade since Hurricane Katrina came ashore killing 1800 people and devastating the community. How those lived through the disaster marked that anniversary. A man was charged with capital murder for the executionstyle killing of a sheriffs deputy. He was pumping gas near houston last night when Authorities Say shannon miles approached Darren Goforth from behind and fired shots. When the deputy fell to the ground the suspect shot him several more times. Police got a search warrant for home where miles lives. The Harris County sheriff says they dont know a motive but think the deputy was targeted simply because of his uniform. What happened last night is an assault on the very fabric of society. It is not anything that we can tolerate. It is time to come forward and support Law Enforcement and condemn this atrocious act. Deputy goforth was a 10year veteran with the sheriffs office. A remarkable story of survival tonight. Rescuers found a 62yearold woman alive this morning after she was lost in the Sierra National forest for 9 days with a broken leg and no food. Rescuers say the woman broke her leg on the first day after she became separated from a group of hikers. Harwood was found in the forest. She had a water filter with her and crawled for two days to a creek where she was able to drink water and stay alive. Helicopters had to maneuver through smoky fiery conditions to reach her. They actually had to find a pathway through the smoke into that area. They were able to land load her into the helicopter and airlift her to crm c in fresno. I was able to visit her in the hospital for a few minutes. She was conscious and talking and very, very grateful that she was found.
