it seems like they're pushing this through in a year from conceiving the idea of having driverless cars to having them actually operating. >> after the meeting today, the dmv announced its revoking the registration for the 16 cars. in response to that, uber says they're stopping the program for now and released this statement that says, quote, we are now locking at where we can redeploy the cars but remain 100% committed to california and will be redoubling our efforts. ktvu fox 2 news. san francisco is making improvements to some intersections making them safer for pedestrians and cyclists. they have a protected intersection. the changes include barriers that spate traffic from -- separate traffic from crosswalks. he said he put the new protective intersection to the test this morning. >> cars that are making the right turn on to 9th street from division are slowing down right behind you and before the redesign of this intersection, cars were would often speed through where we're standing. >> the changes are part of san francisco's citywide plan known as vision zero. its goal, zero deaths on city streets by the year 2024. >> we've brought you stories on how local law enforcement officers and minority communities are trying to come together to bridge the different i had other. they've held two town hall discussions. at a barbershop and now they're keeping the conversation going. paul chambers is there where they're offering free haircuts tonight with cops. >> reporter: that is right. it's an interesting concept. it's cuts with the cops. you have an opportunity to get a free haircut, but you get to talk to lou enforcement about the job and a job fair. we have san leandro police department and oakland pd, all of which are hiring to bring people from the community into those positions of law enforcement. now, i have lieutenant mike here with me whose concept this was. how did you come up with this idea? >> i figured it would be a good opportunity to bring more dialogue with community members. also, an opportunity for us to explain some of our hiring processes and the need to have the community engaged with the law enforcement and become law enforcement officers. i think it's very important that community members come out and they be that image that they want to see. so that's why we created it. >> we've had several town hall discussions right here. that was part of your brainchild. why is it is important to get people of color into this position? if that's the position they want, you want people to see what you look like. why is that important? >> it's important they can come to community so the community members can see somebody that looks like them and feel more comfortable talking to them and have clarity and understanding. >> we came to a common ground. everybody knows the barber stop even though we haven't been here in a while. why was it important for law enforcement to come to the territory where the people are? so they're more comfortable? >> more comfortable and the barbershop is like a therapeutic session for african- american men. it's a great opportunity for them to come here, get some of their answers. >> let's talk about that hiring position. what's going on with your department? >> alameda county sheriff's office is hiring up until december 27th. if you go to our website, we're actually -- we actually have the application open until the 27th of december. >> 27th of december. >> yeah. >> we have a young gentleman to came out here for that purpose. he got a free cut. his name is alexander. he's also learning about law enforcement. what do you think about this concept? >> honestly, i think it's a great -- it's eye opening and also brings back to the community. it makes the community feel comfortable and honestly to get the information that they need. >> so we see you have the free cut, but what about the opportunity for employment? did you work with that also? >> yes. not only did i sit down and talk with a career -- the recruiter for the oakland pd, i talked with the alameda county sheriff. they told me to put in my application and sell yourself. at the same time, it's not even just selling yourself. it's trying to build your career. >> thank you very much. it's cuts with the cops until 7:00. they plan to have more, burr it's a good process and -- but it's a good process and it's continuing the conversation, as you said. >> it is such a great idea. this is the third one you've been to now. i'm just curious, what are some of the conversations that the minority community is having with the police there? what are they talking about? >> reporter: this one was different. this was an opportunity to learn about law enforcement and get a job, but the previous ones we've had were just a lot of things that are facing the community, whether it's talking about stops, whether it's talking about officer involved shootings. it's just a lot of different things that the community, that we're all seeing on television, getting it out, flushing it out and hearing from every side so people can understand on both sides. this is what police are doing. this is what it means for them. but also for the community to make sure the officers know they are people, too. if they have been very up front, very open and very honest with those dialogues. >> it is just great to see that one-on-one dialogue. paul chambers tonight. thank you. coming up, a warning tonight from police about an attempted robber disguised as a pest control worker. am i actually pushing these guys who ran out of gas six miles on a lonely highway? or is this a metaphor for how i'm constantly pushing myself to make a tastier sandwich? like my new pepper jack ranch spicy chicken sandwich with spicy pepper jack cheese, spicy ranch, and spicy all-white-meat chicken. but judging from the third-degree sunburn, and the fact that i can't feel my legs, i'd say i'm actually pushing this car. there's gotta be a better way to get new customers. the pepper jack ranch spicy chicken sandwich. taste it before it's gone. yep, i'm lost. new at 6:30, san francisco police say a man pretending to be a pest control technician tried to steal laptops from a business in the city. police released this surveillance video showing that man dressed in a hazmat suit. he went into a business on franklin street at about 6:20 in the morning on december 12th. he showed an official looking ortho card and then signed in. a security guard later found that man with one laptop in his hand and then trying to disconnect another. the guard chased the man out of the building. on wall street, stocks finished lower on light holiday season trading. the dow is off 32 points with health care companies struggling. nasdaq dropped 12 points. the death toll is raising from that massive explosion at a fireworks market near mexico city yesterday. at least 32 people were killed and 46 others were injured. 12 people are still missing tonight. the market was filled with shoppers buying fireworks to celebrate christmas and new year's when the explosions happened. >> we were in the area of the bathrooms when there was an an explosion at the stop at the end of the row. and then a series of the blasts came one after another. they started running and then many people were falling. pieces of concrete and bricks fell all over the street. >> investigators say the scene is still dangerous and they're telling people to stay away as they try to pinpoint what caused that disaster. this is the third explosion and fire to hit the market in the past 11 years. up next here, a lesson in longevity in both life and love. >> hold your hand. give me your hand. we like to hold hands. >> up next, that woman is about to turn 100. her husband just turned 103. they've been married for more than 70 years. you're going to meet them next. we've got that rain model loaded up and ready to go. it's going to rain friday. snow in the mountains as well as well. we'll have all that dialed in next. >> just sit down there, talking. >> reporter: sounds simple. but it works. henry is a man of few words, but he has what it takes to make ruth happy. >> he's very sweet. sweet and gentle and loving. >> reporter: ruth says they met in their 20s in los angeles and were married in 1940. they raised their family in the same oakland home for 67 years. >> thank the lord. we had 6 children, three boys and three girls. who could ask for anymore? >> reporter: to raise their family, he worked as a waiter and then a chef. ruth was a stay-at-home mom and later an elementary school cafeteria worker. >> a simple life we lived. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: ruth attributes her longevity and great health to not drinking or smoking. henry is a former smoker. an interest they share is playing slot machines. in their decades in oakland, they've seen a lot of change. >> every day, you pick up the paper and killings. it's so depressing. then there are things that happen? >> reporter: she's never had any trouble except for a burglary at her home a few years ago. still, she says life in oakland has been good. >> i do thank the lord for all that we have, all the loving children and friends. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: ruth turns 100 on christmas day. she says she and henry are grateful for the many blessings they have, but most importantly, they have each other. in oakland, amber lee, ktvu fox 2 news. you just can't help by smile watching that. i loved it when she said give me your hand. >> i know. >> we like to hold hands. >> and playing on her ipad and checking her e-mails. >> and also playing candy crush. >> they've been in the house -- they've been together 76 years. >> it's just such a nice story. let's bring in our meteorologist to talk about our weather now. wasn't that a nice story? >> any time you have someone that's over 90 years old, you know, they're so special. i mean, right? >> the fact that they're healthy and they both can stay in the same house they raised their children in for that long, the two of them, at 100 and 103, so blessed the. >> the stories they must have. >> i know. >> you can't help by smile. >> i love when i bump into people in their 90s. i never talked to people over 100, but my wife's mom was 98, when i loved sitting and talking with her because the things -- i mean, she's talking about i remember the first car on the streets and stuff like that. >> my grandma just turned 99 on friday. how does it feel grandma?
