KTVU KTVU Fox 2 News At 5pm December 7, 2016

Was passionate about music. Myca danemeyer lived with his girlfriend and had moved in the day before. And a 34yearold jennifer described by friends as beautiful and fashionable and 20yearold mick Cayla Gregory of South San Francisco among the dead. Some of the loved ones were allowed to visit today. They were escorted by authorities and by grief counselors. Oakland Police Chaplain reverend jason was there support the families. Back now to where the fire may have started as we mentioned tonight they are looking at the possibility that it began in a refrigerator in the back of the building. Cristina rendon is on the scene with more of the investigation. Cristina. Well at p investigators say they will be looking at all appliances and Electrical Equipment as they search for a source. But right now it is too soon to pinpoint the exact cause. The report that this could be from a refrigerator came to us from the Alameda County sheriff. He learned that the fire came from a refrigerator that kept shorting out and could have possibly blown a fuse. There are reports that a survivor told investigators that they saw flames from the area of the fridge in the back of the building. So i did ask the at the atf but they did tell me there is no indication of arson. I have not been in the scene from speaking with our certified fire investigators that have been in there. This is one of the worse scenes we have seen in regards to the amount of victims. Crews are 90 complete with debris removal and the number of victims stem at 36. This afternoon fire crews began to knock down the parapit on the front part of the warehouse that is on the edge of the roof. The Fire Department says it was structurally unsound so they have to bring it down. We not only have run visually people through there, we have run the cadaver dogs and the other search dogs and at this point we have declared the area where the debris will fall searched. Fire crews anticipate they will be done clearing debris by midnight. After that it is unclear what their next step in the investigation will be. We do know that at 5 45. Crews plan to give us an update. We will be bringing you that update in about 45 minutes. Back to you. All right. Cristina rendon on the scene thank you. The chaplain for the oakland Fire Department says that the Recovery Efforts are taking an emotional toll on the crews working around the clock to try to clear the scene and find all of the bodies. The chaplain says for the more recent hires this is the first time they have worked an incident with so many deaths. It has been painstaking to cover the remains of the victims that is respectful for the families. A lot of the firefighters are still kind of getting a sense of the immensity of what happened. And with this continued concern and sense for the families and the loss that they field. A desire to do their job so theres some kind of resolution that the families are facing right now. As we reported the tragedy hit close to home for the Law Enforcement community. The teenage son of an alameda Alameda County deputy died. Derick almena has rented it out since 2014 and he allowed several people to move in and collected rent from them. He built the second floor to create a music and art menu. We have more with how Derick Almena ran the two businesses inside that warehouse. It was an operation that doesnt have much of a paper trail. Derick almena preferred to operate a venue and living space on a cash only exchange and we have been trying to reach Derick Almena today. We went out to one of the hotels we heard he was staying out but we could not find him but we reached out to one of his family members. His motherinlaw told us that she is not a fan of Derick Almena. She says that Derick Almena and his wife myca allison are estranged from the family because the family suspects drug use and concern over what they see as the couples abnormal behavior. The ghost ship warehouse was not only Derick Almenas home. He also ran two businesses inside. The first floor of the warehouse was where people lived. Confirmed fire survivors and tenants said they paid to live in the warehouse. I live there. I wasnt the party was on the second floor. I wasnt at the party. I lived in the back and i was sleeping when the fire broke out. Carmen burrito paid her rent in cash. But paid another resident to collect the rent. A source wishing to remain anonymous provided a rental agreement and these receipts from rents collected from three different ghost ship tenants. It is for monthtomonth. The manager is sacka uga. All residents agreed to pay rent in cash only. If payment is late, the tenant must pay a 450 late fee. Two receipts showed two tenants paid 300 and this tenant paid 565 on november 21st. Our source says Derick Almena deposited the cash rental payments to a bank of america account for the Property Owner torein. Today on the today show Derick Almena deflected questions about whether he should be held responsible for the unsafe conditions. Did i know there was going to be a fire did i remove my family because i wanted to avoid this, no, i wanted to get a good nights sleep and let the young people do what they needed to do. Im not going to answer the questions. It was a venue for music acts and djs. The dance floor and music space was on the 2nd floor accessed by one make shift staircase. One business asked not to be identified but rented out the space three years ago. It paid a flat rate to Derick Almena and up to the business to run the event. Any money collected at the door or sales made inside went directly to the business and nothing else was shared with sacka uga. In talking with other survivors. People that lived there it looked like there may have been others that were helping Derick Almena run the ghost ship and there was someone else that coordinated with the musical acts and it does appear there was some resident djs and Music Artists that had a standing show at the ghost ship warehouse. We dont know if it was legal for Derick Almena to be renting out that property and for people to actually be living there, do we . At this point, it does not look like it was legal. It looks like it was only zoned to be a warehouse and with Derick Almena possibly from our source delivering that money to the bank of america account to the Property Owner, maybe the Property Owner did not know they were living there. To we think Derick Almena was making much of a profit . It is hard to say. Talking to some people, to them they didnt think that with the cover charge of getting in and the cost of running the events that they would be making a huge profit off of these events. That maybe they may be breaking even and that the whole purpose of it was to get the artist a platform to share their art. But in terms of the rent, we heard there could have been up to 15 People Living there at one time so if you do the math and calculate he could have been making over what his rent for the warehouse was. Lee martinez, thanks for the information. Once again the death toll remains at 36 people from that warehouse fire in oakland. Here is a look once again from above. This is what is happening. Authorities are operating under the assumption that the fire may have started in a refrigerator in the back of the building in this area right here. It was constantly shorting out. Possibly from an overloaded power supply. I was out there today and told that what they are looking at is whether the entire warehouse including businesses next door all used one electric box that was constantly being split. Now, so far they have searched about 90 of the building. They expect to be finished sometime later tonight. This right here is the one area that they still need to search. This is right near the front door. International boulevard is right here. 31 are avenue is right here. The front door right there, they say this area is so filled with debris, so packed down that they couldnt even get cadaver dogs into smell in the area. Now they dont think they are going to find anymore bodies but there are still cadaver dogs on the scene tonight just in case and again they expect the search to continue sometime to around 9 or 10 00 tonight and at that point, they think they will finally have searched this entire warehouse. Now each day that goes by, there are new pictures and stories about the men and women killed in the fire. These are the faces of some of the people that have already been identified. Ktvus alex savage says that each one of them has a story to tell. Among the dead, 33yearold ann bullka that lived in oakland. A poet and worked at high wire coffee up until recently. I talked with one of her co workers that says she was a joy in every way. She was one of the most thoughtful intelligent soft caring individuals that i have ever worked with and we have had here. She had such an impact on not just her family of employees but on many customers. Another one of the victims went by the stage name sharouchi. Known as electronic musician and producer. Authorities confirm that 33 yearold Chelsea Dolan from San Francisco was among the dead. Also lost in the fire, 29year old farrell pines. An according to reports, pines was a transgender woman that moved to the bay area from indiana and relatives say her passion was music. City inspectors and police paid visits to the warehouse before that devastating fire. Coming up at 5 30. A Bay Area School combats claims of rampant racism made by a Junior High Schooler. We talked to the student about his plans and the letter that he wrote to his school. A freeze warning in effect for a part of the bay area tonight. But you will most likely see frost or freezing in your backyard. I will tell you when and how long and when the rain will get here. Several people have come forward talking about concerns. Do you know for a fact the city was aware that people were living in the warehouse when they should not have been and b, that large parties, large events not permitted events were taking place. Did the city know that . That one specifically i do not snow. The assembly permit. I know that was not requested and im used to that because we have fiestas and different celebrations indoors and outdoors and you have to have a Police Permit where the police will inspect it as well as the neighborhood and i know that wasnt requested. Now when it comes to People Living in the facility, i have i didnt have any clue that people were living there until after the fact but certainly the Property Owner and some of the neighbors and those doing business in the facility knew that was occurring. Councilman, i think we can agree that somewhere in oakland there are other warehouses like this that are a fire trap and accident waiting to happen. Does the city and you did mention that you are doing something here. But does the city in your opinion need to have more urgency and put more of a priority on making sure that these buildings are up to code . There is a reason why we have the codes and regulations. Absolutely. Right now in oakland there is a housing shortage so therefore not only are we dealing with the Artistic Community and looking for a place to live with College Degrees but we have Immigration Community that people are coming into oakland from guatemala and el salvador and finding a place to live and will live anywhere and this was an experience and people need a place to afford the rent and supposed to be not on the street and underneath the freeways, they choose places like this but in oakland warehouses are being converted illegally for housing and at the same time im surrounded by apartments where there are ten to an apartment and using propane tanks to do their cooking and we need to be more assertive in enforcing the codes and the Property Owners know what the regulations are and they are to be held responsible. Councilman, i know you live not far from there. What is it like being in that neighborhood . Right now it is anybody and everyone that lives around this incident here is really feeling the pain and the sorrow and many people are speaking out down the street at the apartment across the street of illegalities and certainly conditions that are not safe for children and families to live in and those are being documented and certainly this time around im going to put everything in writing and carbon copied to the mayor and public works to make sure we get attention. Councilman noel guyer thank you for taking the time. The city will be taking steps to avoid a tragedy like this. We are expecting an update from police and the Fire Department coming up at 5 45. We will carry that live when it begins. Now to fremont where the Unified School District is combating claims of racism made by a Junior High School student and that student went so far as to put pen to paper in expressing his feelings. Our south bay reporter jesse gary has more. You have the letter and as well as reaction from students and officials. Thats right. Officials were made aware of the letter last month and they took address to address the racism and the bullying. Over the week the victims older brother that goes to college saw the letter and became angry and harboring hard feelings over what he said was similar treatment when he went to thornton Junior High School so he put the letter on social media. Howard handled his frustrations with a letter to officials and describing the insults like you need to go back to the cornfield slave and look at his hair, it looks like a microphone. He writes i am alone to face this. The Vice President lets the students call me expletive. We find this disheartening. Dr. Jim morris says racism is not tolerated in the district or school that has three percent black students. He says the district was notified of the letter november 10th and met with the students family on the 14th and had a support plan in place that same day. If one of our students is feeling this way it is something that we have to Pay Attention to. Wont say how the offending students were disciplined by israel has a counselor to talk about issues. Not really a plan. More of the school trying to deny, and nothing is getting done. Israels father is not happy with the schools actions but says he is produced this unfortunate circumstance is teaching his son how to stand on his own two feet. The lights go out. The School District says it is too soon to tell if the plan they have put in plan is having the desired effect.
