The Community College there is the only college located in Douglas County. It is a terrible story. And for now oregons attorney general is saying 13 people are dead, 20 others are injured. We still know very little about the shooter. But there are already some chilling accounts about what people saw and heard when it all started. He was outside one of the dorms shooting through the door. Reporter chaos on campus. There was a couple girls sprint woig from the building, and i hear screaming after the first gunshot. Reporter the first calls about a 20yearold man with a gun at umpqua Community College in oregon went out after 10 30 am. The active shooter was engaged by law enforcement. And later confirmed to be deceased. Reporter not before investigators say the shooter killed 13 and injured as many as 20 others. The motive and extent of the threat unknown. Rauches searched the campus officers searched the campus car by car. Buses rushed some of the students to safety. Oregon Governor Kate Brown faced cameras before also heading to the scene. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. We are holding the community of Douglas County in our hearts today. Reporter late this afternoon, a visibly frustrated president obama talked about the tragedy and gun control. As i said just a few months ago, and i said a few months before that, and i said each time we see one of these Mass Shootings, our thoughts and prayers are not enough. Its not enough. It does not capture the heartache and grief and anger that we should feel. And it does nothing to prevent this carnage from being inflicted some place else in america. Just in the last minute or so, we received an update from the Douglas County sheriff. This tells you how fluid the situation is. He is now reporting that there are 10 dead, and at least seven injured. We told you at the top of the broadcast, the attorney general said 13. This was such a chaotic situation today, we saw those numbers move around a lot. But the latest information from the sheriff is that ten dead in this tragedy, and one of the students inside the classroom when this shooting all started told a local newspaper the shooter told them to get on the ground and then stand up and state their religion when he opened fire. Again were beginning to hear more accounts from witnesses in this tragedy. Thats a Big Development what you gist told us. The numbers weve been going on were 13 dead and 20 wounded. Now the sheriff is saying seven were wounded . That is the latest were hearing. But again its important that you take all of these numbers with some degree of caution. This was such a chaotic scene. Victims going to multiple hospitals. So you have to go with what the authorities are telling you in the moment. And we dont know much about the gunman here other than he was a 20yearold male . Thats correct. That is all theyre releasing at this point. And you may have seen some of our video that authorities were combing the campus, checking cars even. Weve known in past Mass Shootings that the shooter s would sometimes set booby traps. They clearly were concerned about other threats out there. Right now theyre keeping the information very close to the vest. All we know officially at this point, 20 years old, and hes a male. I thought it was interesting watching president obama there. I dont recall seeing him that emotional and really angry since the sandy hook massacre in connecticut. This is something that the president has been hammering for sometime now. And we were talking before, he clearly appeared to go off of script and talk about how he really felt about these. You may remember another Horrible School shooting in 2012 in oakland when a student opened fire at oikos university. Psychiatric evaluations determined that he was unfit to stand trial. This monday a judge in Alameda County will set a date for a competence trial if he it found to be permanently unfit, he will be placed in a psychiatric institution. The fbi is looking into inmate complaints at the Santa Clara County jail, and more deputies have been placed on leave amid the investigation into an inmates death. Live now at the Santa Clara CountySheriffs Department after talking with the sheriff about this review. Reporter the sheriff called it unusual time. Her office has received a lot of complaints from alleged verbal abuse to use of force. Reporter a lot santa clair county correctional deputies are on leave with pay since a mental ill inmate was found unresponsive in his jail cell on august 26th. Among those on leave, three jail guards accused of beating him to death. Since the death, they are reviewing up to 100 complaints. I asked what does she have to say to tax payers . I hope theyre not alarmed. I hope they look at it as were Holding People accountable. We have over 1,400 deputies in this department. This is unusual that we are going through this. Reporter a source confirms one of the deputies on leave is the president of the Santa Clara County correctional peace officers association. Reporter this comes as another mentally ill inmate, 33 yearold walter rochas, was found dead in his jail cell monday. Preliminary autopsy results dont indicate foul play. An exact cause of death could take weeks. Court documents say he had skritsen frommia. Not surprise something ne, its not surprising. I know im surprised that, you know, that now its really being heard. Reporter this man claims he was incarcerated at the Santa Clara County main jail before. He was part of a Group Protesting outside the jail over the treatment of inmates. Reporter and in addition to the fbi, the Sheriffs Office has brought in retired investigators who have internal arc fairs experience internal affairs experience. And the complaint, you said 100 or so, do we know the timeframe of when those complaints were filed . Were they after the inmates death . Reporter thats a good question. Some of these complaints we have to say have been ongoing. They just said there were about 50 to 100 complaints they have been reviewing. Not all of them are in the support complaints. And some of them were ongoing. They find it very tragic these complaints happened during tyrees death. But they didnt happen all at once. Thank you. Family adam buchanan, his girlfriend, and their son went missing in midseptember two days before the cabin they owned burned. The sheriff confirmed the remains found in the cabin there were theirs. A federal grand jury today indicted the man at the center of a bizarre kidnap for ransom plot in vallejo. He was indicted on a charge of dipping for abducting Denise Huskins and her boyfriend in march and demanding money for their return. He has pleaded no contest in that case. Theres already been ushered onshore over the last three days. Thats a major hurricane, category 4. The eye wall is strengthening, and the track on this storm basically keeps it offshoesh. But that doesnt matter offshore, but that doesnt matter. East a half foot of rain in some places, some places more. It could add another 20 inches of rain so theyre going to have massive flooding, especially in the carolinas. Here are a couple of the storm paths. The main models are going off here. A couple of rogue models are running it in here. This would be disastrous if this storm came in here and looped around. This is more time over the land to explode with rainfall. You damaged my reputation. Reporter the women who age from 35 to 86 years old they the staff paraded them off the train as a way to shame them. They ended up in a dirt lot where police were waiting for them. That was the most humiliating experience that i had ever had in my entire life. My granddaughter is my life. She looks up to me. And for her to think that im some person thats being crazy on a train is it breaks my heart.
