KTVU KTVU Fox 2 News At 4pm September 27, 2016

So in order to have fire access this area, we posed down northbound 101 at lakeville and we are sending everybody off the highway. You said stewart drive, just on the east side of highway 101 just as you are getting into the heart of downtown the loma area is that correct . Yes. The fire is spreading so quickly. We are sending up a couple of areas for the residence to go to at mckenzie and cortez in the safeway parking lot of some temporary places. Can you tell us anything about the kind of structures that have been burned. Is it the homes that have been lost . Yes, this is a residential neighborhood. The only thing right now that are burning are houses. Again, how many houses do you think have been lost . We are unsure on the damage to the houses, but i confirm at least four houses were on fire. And the fire is on scene as they have requested mutual aid to the threealarm fire. The Police Department have gone in evacuating all the residence in a 300 block of stewart drive. Again the fire is on scene in trying to suppress the fire. We are looking at live pictures right now from sky fox showing smoke alongside highway 101 as it looks like the fire trucks have parked on the shoulder at the washington street exit near downtown loma, but the fire is dissipating. I dont know your vantage point, but they are getting a handle on this . Yes, they responded very quickly. The Police Department did evacuate people. Hopefully it is just limited to the four original structures. Do you have any reports of any injurieses in this fire . No, not yet. This started in one house and spread to the other is your understanding . We are unsure the point of origin. Or to the house or it started in the house and quickly spread north due to the breeze. Now that it looks like the smoke is diminishing. When you see the fire crews on the shoulder with the fire getting put out is that a good sign of the freeway reopening soon . Yeah, im not sure when the freeway will be open. Hopefully the sooner we can get them open, i know the commute is coming up, were trying to get it open. Yeah, are cal fire crews also assisting in this fire fight . Yeah. The local cal fire, but mostly petaluma and lakeville fire department. All right. All right lieutenant tim lyons, thanks for the information. The good news is no injuries. The bad news at least four homes have been lost in this fire that broke out a short time ago maybe within the last half hour in petaluma. But firefighters have done quick work on this on a very hot day in the bay area. It looks like they pretty much got a handle on it. It doesnt look like it is spreading. We dont see any flames right now, just some smoke coming up from the area, but the fire is getting knocked down and hopefully highway 101 will be reopen soon, which of course gets very crowded this time of the day as people are leaving the city heading up towards santa rosa. Good news that the fire is getting put out. We will keep you posted as the story unfolds throughout the rest of the afternoon. Now to the san rafael bridge. The eastbound lanes have been closed now for eight hours after a big rig crash and caught fire this morning. Yeah, crews have spent much of the day cleaning up the wreckage there and also assessing damage to the bridges support structures. In a short time ago we finally got an update on just when officials expect to reopen that stretch of the bridge. Ktvu tom vacar is live in court where there is a big backup of people trying to get across the bridge and they cant, tom . Reporter well ill show you where we are right now as we are on sir Francis Drake boulevard. The traffic heading west. Which means that it will be going to highway 580 in order to get across the bridge going towards richmond and berkeley and all of that. But the trouble is when these folks get around the corner, they will be diverted back onto anderson or told to turn around and that is why you see the cars coming back this way. The reason for all of that is that the bridge is still closed. They are not letting anybody close to it. As a result this is the last disappointment that a lot of people are getting at. You will see that all of these trucks and all of these cars, they kind of thought they would be able to get across the bridge. Of the few that wanted to get this way, they are probably not very happy either. But the overwhelming majority of the people thought they would get across the bridge over to the east bay and that it is simply not going to happen. Now the last i heard that they are talking about 6 00, but the other people said that it might be longer than that because of the damage done by this truck eight hours ago. And certainly seems to be taking a long time to do this, but that depends on the condition of the highway on the bridge, and it depends if a whole bunch of other variables and most importantly it depends on when they finally say that it will be time to rock n roll and right now if you are thinking about rocking and rolling that your best bet will be to go south through the city to get to the east bay or north up to going across sears point. But then they saw a problem with 37 going into vallejo, which is pretty packed as well. If you dont have to make the trip, dont make the trip because thats the situation here. And it doesnt seem to be improving as we say that you see people moving, but they are basically being sent right back to san rafael because there is no other place for them to go. Reporting live tom vacar ktvu fox 2 news. Tom, i was going to say that this is really a Ripple Effect because now we have a fire inside petaluma. So if you are trying to avoid this mess on the san rafael bridge to try to get to the vallejo area or beyond and youre thinking about taking highway 37, well highway 101 is closed to lakeville, which is just past the 37 turnoff. You could be having some big problems trying to get across highway 37 as well. Reporter yeah, well this morning i came in to work and i normally go across the Richmond Bridge going over towards oakland when in fact i had to go through the city and a trip that usually takes 40 minutes, even in traffic to an hour and 40 minutes. The situation here is that this is the commute of the direction right now. These folks want to get across the east bay because they either work in the city and they want to get back to the east bay. There is a mess here because there is really nothing that they could do other than turn back into san rafael, which is not a good description. If they are trying to get up north to santa rosa it will be another big problem. And one has to remember that the other people are thinking the same thing. If you dont have to drive, i dont think that you should drive. Yeah, i would just pull over and have a nice dinner, wait it out and relax. Yes, tom vacar live for us, thanks, tom. Well in the meantime crews are continuing to battle the loma fire in santa clara county. That fire broke out yesterday. It has already burned 1,500 acres so far. It is just 5 contained. It broke out as i mentioned yesterday afternoon southeast of highway 17 near the top of the loma mountain. One home has been destroyed, hundreds more there are threatened. Evacuation orders have been issued and hundreds of residence have now left their home. We came out here last night, you know, it wasnt this far out last night. Yeah we drove right past here last night and none of this was burned. Up along the hillside. You thought you had time because the fire wasnt here . Yeah. And we didnt realize how far it had spread. Over the past hour there has been an increase in the number of aerial units making passes overhead. They say the goal is to make sure the flames dont jump across summit road and spread into santa cruz county. Ktvu jesse gary is on the scene. Hell have a live report updating us on the situation coming up at 5 00. Authorities spent the Early Morning hours evacuating homes in the area threatened by the fire. About 300 homes are in the fires path. Santa clara county Sheriff Deputies went door to door warning people about the fire telling them to evacuate. One of our news crew asked people to pack up their cars, asking to stay with nearby friends or relatives. There were horses and other livestock that needed to be rescued. They were taken down the mountain in trailers. We spoke to some people who were told to evacuate. Everybody has been up all night trying to get everything that they can together to leave and some people have left already. What are your plans . My plans are to stay here until my home is secure as long as they leave the road open, im not going to leave. Im not going to leave until ive had 50 cars back here since it got dark. And smoke and ash fell in some of the mountain communities. One homeowner showed us what it looked like on his truck. Many of them remember the coy fire that burned near the same area back in 2001. They are all hoping that firefighters will be successful in protecting their homes. One resident who is a volunteer firefighter for the Mountain Community went up the hill to see if he could help. And it has been a very dry year. We saw the fire about 2 45 yesterday looking out our living room window. It was up in the hills. We immediately started doing the stuff weve been prepared for and ive got, you know, Fire Fighting equipment that belonged to the volunteers. And we will do what we can. There are three Evacuation Centers that are set up. So Cal High School on old san jose road in oka road, and the Morgan Hill Presbyterian Church on dewitt avenue. All right, lets turn things over to our meteorologist to find out about the weather conditions that are facing those firefighter there is. Bill, yesterday we were talking about the conditions near that loma fire. The wind did not seem to be a big factor. Had it picked up at all today . Not really, heather. Its been relatively mild. The direction has changed a little bit. We are not saying the southerly flow too much. But it was blowing smoke into the bay. Now we are seeing more of a northwesterly or westerly flow in this area, which is taking the smoke down towards bakersfield and fresno. But the fire is still a very large fire, it is being terrain driven. Theres not a lot of wind driving it, but the humidities have come up just a little bit. So as we look at the temperatures today, youre a little cooler than yesterday. In some places like the north bay youre 8 degrees cooler. Oakland is 14 degrees cooler. In the fire zone youre about four degrees cooler. Right now in the loma prieta fire, 22 degrees. 22 is the humidity with winds at 5 miles per hour. The conditions are going to improve in a couple of ways. Its going to cool off over the next couple of days. That is going to help firefighters. The humidities are going to come up, but then we will see the winds kick up. The winds will come from a westerly direction and because of that direction they will increase humidity and cool temperatures, but wind is what firefighters hate to deal with especially in the terrain driven fire. Thats going to be a double edge sword. It is very important to know what kind of containment they could get on the fire today. Up here you saw ken and heather talk about that. 85 degrees there. 30 humidity and the winds are southwest at about 5 miles an hour. In that area, you know, the temperatures have dropped quite a bit and the humidity is coming up rapidly with the fog moving through the bay right now. All right, thank you very much, bill. All right, the president ial candidates are back on the campaign trail. And both are declaring victory after last nights first president ial debate. Donald trump, he spoke at a round table discussion in miamis Little Havana neighborhood where he criticized the normalization of the relations with cuba by president obama. It is a very important moment talking about a lot of very important subjects including jobs, including the immigration. You folks know more about immigration than anybody. But immigration, it is such an important subject. And our military, our vets are taking care of our vets. This is a man that will go and calling our military a disaster. Who will go around, criticizing every institution from healthcare to educate. But he probably hasnt paid a penny to support our troops or our vets, our our schools. The democratic nominee was in rally, North Carolina today. Last nights debate is likely to set a record as the most watched ever with more than 81 Million People tuned in across the networks. Reporter all of this unfolded in the claire month neighborhood on the country club side of orinda. Police were looking for any evidence. Now a couple tells police before the robbery and shooting that the wife picked up the husband at the orinda bart station. The two stopped by a nearby safeway store. This morning we saw a Police Officer talking to store personnel to see if they fold the couple from the safeway or the bart station.
