Lauren blanchard, fox news. This week alone. There were shootings at two different schools across the country. Two students were arrested and then in milwaukee, four teenage girls and a woman were wounded in a shooting outside of a High School Basketball game yesterday. Investigators say that fight started over a social media post. No arrests have been made here in california. One state senator is pushing for a bill aimed at preventing School Shootings and protecting students from gun violence. It would require parents of Public School students to disclose if they have a gun at home, among other things. Joining us now is state senator anthony porter. Tino from pasadena. He is here to talk about his bill. Thank you so much for joining us today. We appreciate you coming on and curious to know why youre pushing this bill forward. Now what would the bill require of School Districts and parents here in california . Well, im pushing the bill because we just saw tragedy in michigan, where School District was alerted to a credible threat and, frankly, didnt act prudently and we saw that that threat was real and people lost their lives. And so you know, right now in california districts can search a locker or backpack at discretion. What my bill says is, if youre alerted to a credible threat of violence on your campus, you must conduct an investigation and you must search. So thats a very important piece of the bill. The other part of it is we want parents to disclose when their kids are registered for school. If theres a gun in the house, and if that kid has access to the gun in the house because that works in concert with the piece i just described if you are, if your teenager god forbid is involved in one of these threats, the School District should know if that kid has access to a gun, and then the third piece of the puzzle is to make sure that parents understand the safe storage laws in california and keep these guns out of the wrong hands. I actually wrote the safe storage bill, which i was proud to pass , and we want parents and students to be educated on safe storage. So all three of those pieces work together, you know . What im trying to do is take the politics out of this situation because many administrators will say you know what . This cant happen on our campus or doesnt happen here or i dont want to anger somebody. Lets wait and see what happens by making it a mandate. Were putting the onus on the state saying to these administrators you must investigate. You must call the law enforcement. You must search those lockers. And im fine. If people get mad at me, because id rather than get mad at me than have to call a teacher, a spouse of a teacher who was shot or the grandma before grader who was shot. We have to error on the side of making these campuses safe. And thats what im trying to do. Well you know, does this largely rely on the honor system when you talk about that second piece where parents would have to report if they do have a gun in the home . I mean, theres nothing stopping people from falsely reporting whether or not they have a gun, right . You know , as the bill is currently written, it does rely on the honor peace, but you know what . We are going to look at consequences for lying. I mean, obviously there would be civil litigation if somebody were to misrepresent themselves on this form. So were looking at strengthening the bill in that in that vein as well, um, but, you know, i think the best of people my mother taught me to be an optimist. And i try to be optimistic. And i think if we can create this conversation between homeowners and parents who have guns and School Districts, you know when we talk to each other, we make better decisions, and we have better Public Safety. And so thats what this bill is trying to do is have that dialogue. Its important to remember that were not saying that that information will be put out there on the net and that it would be made public. This is for school to know who has access to guns. If that person if that student then becomes a threat to that school. Can you talk about the reaction to critics . Because im sure there will no doubt be some people who dont agree with this bill in terms of the disclosure when you talk about the first part when you investigate after theres a credible threat and going to the parents household to check, i can understand that. But some critics may say well does this put an unconscious bias against the students . If their family does report that they own a gun . Does that make staffers or educators look at that student unfairly and maybe view them as a potential threat. No because were not again. Were not using th
