President bidens remarks come after the Justice Department charged 21 people for fraudulently receiving 150 million in covid19 relief aid back in april, Solano County is reporting its first human case of west nile virus this year. Health officials say. The patient who is from vacaville, is now recovering. So far, there have been seven human cases across california this year. Most people will not develop symptoms, but about one in five patients will have mild flu like symptoms, and in rare cases, the virus can be fatal. The virus is usually transmitted through a mosquito bite. Joining us now, for more perspective. Dr John Schwartzberg from Uc Berkeley School of public health, doctor schwartzberg always appreciate the time. Nice to see you. Let let we weve had west nile obviously around here in california for quite some time, but lets sort of remind everyone about how the virus is more. Most often transmitted and one of the most effective steps we can all take to try to reduce the risk of being infected with west nile. But weve weve been dealing with west nile here in the bay areas for at least 20 years. But, you know, proud and the late 19 nineties there was no west nile in the United States, so its a relatively new newly introduced organism. Um the way its transmitted is by mosquitoes in the vector, the specific vector mosquitoes here are plentiful in california. So the virus will bite, particularly its normal host, which youre often birds, but other animals as well and pick up the virus from those animals , and then when they bite humans, they transfer that virus to human beings. And when the virus gets in our body, um it can multiply and go to a variety of places, especially likes to go to the lining of the brain and the brain itself and it can be very dangerous cases people with west nile can develop a severe neurological disease, which you know, as you point out, can be potentially fatal, who among us is most at risk for that kind of a severe outcome . Well the older you are, the more risk you are for a severe outcome with this, but you can see severe disease what we call encephalitis in children, young adults, older adults so it can occur in all folks, but older people are more susceptible than the serious consequences and younger people. What we talked about some of the most common symptoms of west nile. If you have it most often sort of mirrors mirrors the flu in many ways. How often do people get west nile . And maybe not even realize that theyre just asymptomatic . Often you know you you get bitten by the mosquitoes that has the virus. Its introduced into your body and your body, doesnt you dont get sick from it. Your body doesnt react to it. Which is great. But unfortunately, some people get whats called the flu like syndrome, but without the respiratory stuff, so it doesnt look like covid in the sense that you get body aches and fever thats like covid, but you dont get the cough and sore throat and runny nose and then a very small percentage of people. The virus goes beyond just causing the body aches and fever and it goes to the lining of the brain or the brain itself, and thats when its really dangerous. Alright so, with this human case being reported in Solano County, were now up to seven human cases of west nile virus here in california so far this year. Can you help help put that into some perspective here . Is there anything that that worries you about where we are with with the case numbers right now, or is this kind of what you would expect . This is what i what i would expect. This is west now. Season late summer fall here in Northern California is when youre going to see most of the mosquito borne illnesses. Other parts of the country. You see it earlier in the year because mosquitoes are more prevalent throughout the year, so this is what i would expect. The numbers are right pretty much in line with what wed expect to see. Um i hate to see any cases, but he said. This is part of the course. But obviously a good idea to be aware and be cautious. When youre when youre going to be outside. We appreciate the perspective as always. Dr John Schwartzberg from Uc Berkeley School of public health. Thank you. Youre welcome. Thank you. A Lightning Strike in washington , d c.
