the roadway is wet, the rain started falling in san francisco a short time ago. mark tamayo is here now with a look at the storm totals from last night. and a look at the next storm headed our way as well as the flash flood watch that's now in effect. >> that's right. that flat -- flash flood watch is starting now at 6:00. after the major event we had last night, take a look at some of the rainfall totals, the today totals that you can see coming up, those numbers adding up across parts of the bay area, numbers up around 1 to 2 inches. take a look at this, see if we can slide this across, i'm going to have to step back and hit the cursor. the clicker is not working. we'll show you the rainfall totals right now, really adding up. as you can see with santa rosa, 2.72 inches, livermore at 1.23 and we are going to add to these numbers as we head into tonight and even into your monday morning. with the rainfall totals. look at ben lomond total, they've picked up over seven inches of rain over the past two days. more is on the way, that will be a concern in the santa cruz mountains. in the short-term, we have the flash flood watch, rainfall expeditions for tonight, 0.5 to over an inch. the coastal hills could pick up 1.5 inches. here is the coverage right now, the green and yellow showing up, i have heavy rain reports up in the north bay for santa rosa. one cell heading out towards napa county with rainfall rates estimated at around 0.2 an hour. you can make out some of that activity. all of this will be ramping up in intensity throughout the evening hours. right now scattered rain for san francisco and oakland. pushing out towards the peninsula out towards san mateo, we have some strong gusty winds as well. wins easily topping 40 miles an hour for this evening. next storm coming on board right about now, heavy rain, flash flood watch as we showed you, thunderstorms possible, very cold, unstable environment. capable of producing lightning and hail and wind advisories as i mentioned winds gusting around 40 to 50. between now and about midnight, things get very interesting especially between 7:00 and 10:00. watching out for changing conditions minute by minute as the cold front marches closer. we have more rain clouds to talk about in the five day. more on that coming up in a few minutes. not an easy weekend to fly in or out of sfo. the airport is reporting delays of up to two hours due to stormy conditions. departure delays range from 15 to 30 minutes. yesterday there were dozens of delays and canceled flights. anyone headed to the airport is urged to call ahead to get the latest information. we just checked with pg&e, just over 1000 power outages across the bay area. majority in the south bay with 575 customers without power. 350 without power in the north bay, 150 in the east bay and 100 on the peninsula. people bracing for the next band of wet weather especially after yesterday's heavy rains and winds. paul chambers talked to residents of one neighborhood dealing with a downed tree and power outages. >> reporter: pg&e crews worked to restore power to this lafayette neighborhood. >> we have nothing. zero. no cable, absolutely nothing. >> we hope to get our power back on. as soon as possible. >> reporter: that's the same wish for all living near this intersexual -- it near this intersection. after a tree came crashing down, blocking the roadway for most of the day, isolating more than 60 people. >> no access to our garage. nothing. it was stormy. >> reporter: as the storm prepares to sweep through the bay area, those living in the area are worried that trees could also come crashing down. >> right next to our house. we trimmed it. hopefully the air will pass right through and we won't get blown down. >> reporter: they are also worried about flooding. >> we have a pool cover and we have no way to take the water off. because we have no electricity. so the pump isn't working. >> reporter: there are plenty here at this hardware store, two miles away with the power outage, workers say business has picked up a lot since saturday's storm especially with trees and limbs falling around the bay. >> we have a lot of people trying to get things protected and trying to get the deadwood down before it comes down on something vital. >> reporter: like in san ramon where this large tree fell, luckily, no one was hurt. since last night, police have already sold a half pallet of sandbags -- police said. they are also selling and everything to help you cope through the next wave of the storm. >> we recommend flashlights on propane stoves. if possible. sometimes it knocked out electric stoves. >> reporter: they also recommend raingear and batteries, basically anything you would use for camping heart failure. adam housley takes a look back on her life. >> reporter: anne frances robbins was born in new york city on july 6, 1921. she was raised by her mother, an actress, and has little contact with her father after her parents divorced. in 1929, she married dr. loyal davis, nancy and her stepfather became close. he adopted her when she turned 14 and nancy took his last name. nancy graduated from smith college in 1943 with a drama degree. she appeared in plays in new york before landing a contract with mgm. >> look at me. >> reporter: in the fall of 1949, a trade paper reported nancy had communist ties. in her memoir, she explained how a director friend asked the president of for union to help. >> later that afternoon the phone rang. nancy davis? this is ronald reagan. i have some answers for you. if you are free for dinner tonight, perhaps we could talk about it then. well, i stammered, i think i could manage it. >> reporter: they had a simple, secret wedding on march 4, 1952. daughter patti was born in october that same year. ron followed in 1958. nancy has said she thought she married an actor but she soon realized his real passion was working with the republican party. he ran for governor, won by a landslide and nancy served as first lady of california from 1967 to 1975. the reagans had been married nearly three decades when they moved into the white house. >> nancy reagan had this image that didn't accurately portray her. it was very regal, above others. it was a total unfair characterization. >> reporter: her priorities quickly shifted. >> i spent a good deal of time with her that day. and she was definitely in shock. she was very quiet. >> from then on the president's safety became her utmost priority. then came one of her most defining moments. >> just say no. >> reporter: those three words forever in the american lexicon. when it came to policy, nancy for the most part kept her distance. she focused on being the president's wife. >> you seldom saw them when they weren't holding hands. they genuinely preferred to be with each other than anyone else. >> reporter: the reagans lived a private life after they retired to california until 1994 when the former president revealed he had alzheimer's disease. a battle he would lose 10 years later. nancy lived quietly after the president's passing. appearing vocationally at events honoring her husband. >> the statue is a wonderful likeness of ronnie. and he would be so proud. >> reporter: the woman the secret service called rainbow is now gone, her time as first lady remains an indelible part of history. adam housley, fox news. >> tributes came pouring in today. the president and first lady released a statement saying, nancy reagan once wrote nothing could prepare you for living in the white house. she was right of course. we had a head start because we were fortunate to benefit from her proud example and her warm and generous advice. jerry brown said nancy reagan lived a remarkable life and will be remembered for her strength and grace. we extend our deepest console -- condolences. nancy reagan will be buried next to her husband at the ronald reagan library in simi valley, a spokeswoman says the public will have a chance to pay their respects prior to the funeral can services. details are still in the works. hearing more today about the upcoming demolition of an apartment building. teetering on a seaside cliff, 320 esplanade was evacuated in ragtag back in 2010 along with another apartment building next door. it has already been torn down. the city is demolishing 320 esplanade because the owner filed for bankruptcy last year and has failed to take care of the situation. the public works director says the construction fence will go up tomorrow and that crews will remove any asbestos and lead. the building will then be demolished with an excavator on tuesday. during that time, technicians will also be monitoring the cliff. >> he'll be able to warn us. make sure that the contractors and staff are safe. >> the diminution is expected to cost as much as $400,000. the city hopes to get reimbursed. a third building on the other side of this one was yellow tagged back in january and could be the next to go. those three inmates who escaped a jail earlier this year are now facing kidnapping charges in addition to several other felonies. police arrested two of those men here at golden gate park after spending a week on the run. the men escaped from a jail in orange county on january 22. they allegedly stole a van and held a taxi driver hostage. that driver is now suing orange county for $2 million. for damages he says he suffered during his abduction. a new bill aims to help students graduate on time. the bill which has bipartisan support would help students graduate in four years by offering them course registration priority and tuition freezes if they maintain a b average. currently just one out of 10 cal state students earned their degree within four years. senator steve glazer a democrat from orinda authored the so- called promise bill, he also served on the csu board of trustees. denver broncos quarterback peyton manning will announce his retirement after 18 seasons in the nfl. manning told broncos general manager john elway and gary kubiak about his decision last night. manning is just shy of turning 40 years 10 days to cross the border to macedonia. in november, turkey struck a deal to stem the flow of migrants in exchange for the easing of visa restrictions for turkish citizens. today was a day of remembrance for families and friends on board malaysia airlines flight. it's been almost 2 years since that plane disappeared while flying over kuala lumpur. 239 people were on that flight. from as far away as china and india are in malaysia to remember their loved ones and also renew calls for the search to keep going. authorities said the search will end in june absent any fresh clothes. the ceremony comes just two days after debris, possibly part of the plan, washed ashore in mozambique. jimmy carter has won his battle against advanced melanoma that had spread to his brain. a spokeswoman shared the good news with people who attend his sunday school class. she said doctors will continue to monitor the 91-year-old to make sure the cancer hasn't returned. for now doctors say he will continue receiving medication but he doesn't need further treatment for the cancer. the series of storms pounding the bay area dumping a lot of snow in the sierra. take a look, in the past 24 hours, kirkwood and northstar ski resorts say they received more than 20 inches of snow. heavenly has seen about 12 inches and of course more is on the way. some resorts in the area say as much as 364 feet of snow have fallen since the ski season began back in mid-november. >> sound like an awful lot of snow. we could use more. let's check in with mark. we are hoping for a march miracle to boost those snowpacks. >> so far, march has started out very promising. in fact they continue to pick up snowfall, this is great news with our water supply. because february was very disappointing here. as you can see right now, about hit on one of these snow reports, this is from just before 7:00 this morning, south lake tahoe reporting 18 inches of snow but still adding to that snowfall total right now. closer to home, rainfall causing concerns as well, widespread rain, santa rosa reporting heavy rain this afternoon into the evening. you can pick out approaching parts of solano county. rainfall rates up about 0.392 nearly half an inch of rain per hour. that is the current rainfall rate. more coverage out towards san francisco, oakland, san leandro, pushing the map of the east bay toward hayward, san ramon, lafayette, and near the peninsula out towards san francisco right to the immediate coastline. the coverage has been increasing at a bit of a break. this will be increasing over the next few hours. also the intensity. winds are beginning to crank up as you can see, winds gusting around 24 miles an hour out toward concord, out of the south, here we go at half moon bay, winds gusting to 29. lots of clouds out there, with all the rainfall and i would not be surprised to see lightning strikes in the short term. watching the cameras on the -- all evening long, thunderstorms pushing into the bay area. storm headlines we talked about the winds for tonight, wind advisory and flash flood watch through late tonight for the bay area. that wind advisory and flash flood watch in place for the entire region tonight as storm number 2 begins to march on shore. wider look out here in the pacific, very active storm pattern, multiple rain clouds tonight. and into monday, the chance of rain for wednesday into thursday, even beyond that point, we head into friday. tonight, rainfall rates will be picking up and for tomorrow, the cold unstable air, shower is likely especially for the morning -- morning hour. here's our forecast model tonight, yellows and oranges, 10:00, heavy rain possibly thunderstorms moving across the bay area. downpours at midnight and then monday morning, scatterbrained downpours out there, scaling back on coverage and probability throughout your monday afternoon. temperatures will be in the upper 50s into the 60s for the cold air arriving. he was a look ahead, as you can see your five-day forecast, a break on tuesday, chance of rain showers on wednesday, could be doing it all over again thursday into friday into the weekend. we all know we need the rainfall
