that is, with your christmas shopping. we'll tell you the surprising number of americans who say their gifts are already >> what? >> it's friday, september 30th. >> from abc news, this is world news now. >> good friday morning, everyone. i'm kendis gibson. >> i'm diane macedo. we begin in new jersey this morning where a long day became a long night at the scene of a tragic commuter rail crash. >> and this morning, investigators are looking at the train's speed and its engineer as they try to figure out what caused all of this. it was a horrific crash. one person is dead and more than 100 others injured after a new jersey transit train rammed into the hoboken terminal. abc's ray raimundi joins us from the scene. >> reporter: kendis, diane, ntsb investigators are inside the hoboken train terminal expected to work true the night and next several days. they say their priority is to gather and collect evidence, analyze the facts, and they say that will help them determine the cause of this fatal crash. >> you okay? >> reporter: the historic train station now a mass of mangled metal, concrete, and glass after rammed the commuter platform that was supposed to be its last stop. you just heard, like, kaboom! the whole place shook, just shook. >> saw a couple gentlemen bleeding, some people couldn't walk, some people were, like, covered in, i guess, debris. >> reporter: incoming trains restricted to a speed of 10 miles per hour, but this train struck with such massive force that it jumped the steel reenforced platform, smashing down columns and caving in the glass roof. >> train didn't stop, just didn't stop. >> i it went over the bumper block, through the air, traveled about another 40 feet and came to a rest when it hit the wall. >> reporter: commuters crowded into the front cars took the worst of the impact. >> they were pulling people out. they were jumping out, cuts and bruises. >> reporter: on the street, triage. dozens of ambulances from across the state rushed the many injured to hospitals. some needing surgery. thomas gallagher, has been released from the hospital and is said to on be cooperating with investigators. >> from the event recorder, we hope to get information such as speed and braking. >> the one fatality, 34-year-old fibiola bittar de kroon, who lived in hoboken. all of those injured are expected to survive. the train has two video recorders on both ends, but because of how unstable the termal determined when investigators will be able to collect those items. kendis, diane, back to you. >> all right. our thanks to ray. we do have some additional information for you about the train's engineer. he is 48-year-old thomas gallagher. he worked for the new jersey transit for 29 years. the married father of two became an engineer about 18 years ago. gallagher was found slumped over the train's control after the crash. neighbors say it was gallagher's childhood dream to be a train engineer. a state funeral held for president obama and former president bill clinton are both speaking at the service. one of the founding fathers of israel, peres spent much of his life trying to establish a lasting peace with israel's arab neighbors. he will be buried between two former prime ministers. peres died wednesday, two weeks after suffering a stroke. he was 93 years old. to politics here in the u.s. donald trump is denying a report that he explored business opportunities in cuba back in the '90s in violation, of course, of the u.s. embargo. and he also is facing allegations that he broke the law by failing to get the certification that's required for the trump foundation to actually collect donations. all of this while facing criticism within his own ranks about the debate that he now says was rigged. here's more from abc's tom llamas. >> reporter: a senior campaign aide tells abc news that donald trump pulled his punches and lost his nerve in the first but trump himself, blaming others. >> then i had to put up with the anchor and fight the anchor all the time with everything i said. what a rigged deal. >> reporter: but the senior campaign source tells us trump was ready for all the questions asked, blaming performance on, quote, more of a lack of execution than preparation. still, days later, trump defending his most damaging moments from taxes -- >> she said, maybe you didn't pay taxes, and i said, well, that would make me smart because taxes are a big payment. >> reporte universe he had work out in front of cameras, mocking her for gaining weight. >> i saved her job because they wanted to fire her for putting on so much weight. and it is a beauty contest. you know, say what you want, but they know what they're getting into. it's a beauty contest. >> reporter: on "the view," the campaign manager defending him. did you reprimand him for that? >> you know, what i really appreciate about this documentary is that they -- it's good journalism in the sense that they give you the facts of the case, the reliable facts of the case, and they say, decide and the other thing they do is they ground the case in the criminal justice system and the people who implement it and the people who are a part of it. and so by showing who was a part of it, not just me, not just my codefendant, but also the prosecutor and the media. they are shedding more light on what happened than all the speculation that's been put out there combined. >> especially when you go to see the prosecutor as portrayed in the documentaries, different than people think. i know that your motivation is to help. you could have sold this for a great deal of money and put it up on the big screen, but people involved in this documentary say you are not receiving a paycheck for this. you want to help people. when you think about meredith's family, do you think about how this is for them to relive it and to have this story out here again? "the washington post" is out with a new report that says that the trump foundation failed to attain certification required by new york state in order to solicit money from the public. if the charity's found to be in violation of the law, it may be forced to stop raising money and actually some donations. so far, no comment from the trump campaign. funeral services are being held this morning in jerusalem for former isr prime minister shimon peres. president obama is one of several paying a final tribute to one of israel's founding fathers. they shared a similar vision for a two-state solution to resolve the israel-palestinian conflict. former president clinton is also attending. peres died wednesday after suffering a stroke two weeks ago. he was 93 years old. the ntsb hopes to speak with the engineer involved in the deadly commuter rail crash this new jersey. least 114 injured when a new jersey transit train barrelled into the hoboken terminal thursday morning. officials say speed played a role in that crash. investigators say the engineer has been cooperative as they try to figure out why the train was moving so fast. commuters describe the mayhem and devastation. >> all the sudden, it was a big boom like metal on metal on metal. you just felt it. you heard it. i hit the wall. >> i thought we were going to die. i didn't think we were going to get out. >> it was initially a horrendous dust, electrical wires and the train flying into the depot. >> afraid to get back on the train, and i've been commuting to new york city for 30 years. >> investigators are looking into whether safety devices on the train activated prior to the crash. they include a system that is supposed to stop locomotives if they are moving too fast heading into hoboken. nbc's david kerley is working on >> reporter: the devastation, crushed rail cars, and lack of braking indicating the transit train entered the station too fast. >> the train just plowed through whatever barrier was at the end of the track. >> it was just chaos. people running every way. >> reporter: the question, why? trains approaching hoboken, a dead end station, slow to traverse rail lines before the final slow speed straight away into the station, but this train may have been traveling 30 miles an hour according to accounts, slamming into a bumper stop, launching it into the air, and crushing into a wall. the 40-year-old engineer is said to be cooperating. investigators will want to know if there was a mechanical problem related to the train, if the engineer was distracted or a medical issue and foul play has not been ruled out. new jersey transit rail, like all railroads, was ordered in 2008 to install positive train control. >> hear that alarm? i have to put the brake on. >> reporter: computers and into the station and take over a speeding or dangerous train. >> if human error happens, it takes control of the train away from the engineer and bring the train to a stop. >> reporter: amtrak installed ptc on most of the northeast corridor after the 2015 amtrak train derailment in philadelphia. eight people died. speed was a factor in 2011. a mother's day commuter train crash at another station that left dozens injured. despite the ability to prent accidents, railroads have been slowed to adopt ptc and its automatic braking. as of july, new jersey transit reported not one of its trains, none of its tracks has the system. >> if this train had positive train control all the way into the station, could this accident been avoided? has yet to make up his mind but confirmed he's considering the libertarian a state funeral held in jerusalem this morning for former israeli president and nobel laureate, shimon peres. president obama is among scores of dignitaries around the world paying tribute to peres. he's speaking at the service as well as bill clinton. it's israel's largest state funeral and peres, partner in peace, died from complications following a stroke and he was 93 years old. investigators hope to get access to a commuter train that slammed into a station in new jersey and recover the black box. the ntsb plans to speak with the engineer as investigators hope to piece together the moments before that tragedy. >> reporter: these are terrifying first images of the mangled mess inside the train station. the packed commuter train speeding through the barriers and crashing into the station. debris and wires everywhere. passengers stunned. of the train shows it heading south towards the hoboken station where thousands of new york city commuters pass through every morning. as it approached the busy station at 8:45 a.m., the train never slowed down. >> approaching the station, everybody's thinking the train is going to slow down and it just collided. >> it went through the air, traveled about another 40 feet -- >> and the train flying into the depot. >> all the sudden, i just hear this wicked gnarly metal sound like nails on a chalk board. >> i saw a couple gentlemen bleeding and some people couldn't walk. the conductor had blood all over his face and clothing. >> reporter: first responders descending on the scene assessing damage, peering down into windows looking for more survivors, some still stuck inside. injured sitting on the street, ambulances racing to the scene. paramedics with stretchers and wheelchairs loading dozens in, treating more than the hundred injured, some of them critically. the train's engineer, thomas gallagher, among those rushed to the hospital. he's been treated and released. many of those injured were on the platform including one woman 34-year-old fabiola bittar de kroon who lost her life after being struck by flyi and many of the injuries were seriously hurt. they've been in and out of surgery all day long. the good nights right now is all of them are expected to survive. abc news, hoboken, new jersey. in western massachusetts, people at the big e fair had to be rescued after a right malfunctioned. it stalled leaving riders stuck several feet off the ground. emergency crews removed dozens of kids one at a time as nervous parents watched from below. no injuries reported. it's unclear what caused that a brutal week on capitol hill. john stumpf appeared before a very angry house financial services committee. he attempted to explain what management knew about the 2 million bogus deposit and credit card accounts opened by bank employees. stumpf apologized, but one lawmaker who happens to be a customer wasn't having it. >> i am deeply sorry that we've failed to fulfill our responsibility to our customers, to our team members, and to the american public. >> fraud is fraud. theft is theft. what happened at wells fargo over the course of many years cannot be described any other way. mr. stumpf, i regrettably have a mortgage with your bank. i wish i didn't. >> lawmakers say wells fargo may have violated federal racketeering and other laws. regulators are not saying whether the case has been referred to the department of justice. cleanup underway in the north carolina was especially hard hit. long time residents say the flooding damage is the worst they've seen in more than a decade. that storm is now on the move where it's poised to unload from the detroit to d.c. all weekend long.
