[ applause ] and welcome. M. Scott peck wrote a book called a different drum. And in that book, he recalls a story of a rabbi and an abbot. It is called the rabbis gift. The story concerns a monastery that had fallen on hard times. Once it was a great order, but as a result of waves of antimonastic persecution in the 17th and 18th centuries and secularism in the 19th century, all its branch houses were lost, and it had become decimated to the extent that there were only five monks left in the order, in the deep woods surrounding the monastery, there was a little hut that a rabbi from a nearby town occasionally used for hermitage. Well, through their many years of prayer and contemplation, the old monks had become a bit psychic, so they could always sense when the rabbi was in his hermitage. The rabbi is in the woods. The rabbi is in the woods again, they would whisper to each other. As he agonized over the imminent death of his order, it occurred to the abbot at one such time to visit the hermitage and ask the rabbi if, by some possible chance, he could offer any advice that might save the monastery. Well, the rabbi welcomed the abbot at his hut. But when the abbot explained the purpose of his visit, the rabbi could only commiserate with him. The spirit has gone out of the people. Well, its the same thing in my town. Almost no one comes to the synagogue anymore. So the old abbot and the rabbi wept together. Then, they read parts of the torah and quietly spoke of deep spiritual things. The time then came when the abbot had to leave. They embraced each other. It has been a wonderful thing that we should meet after all these years, the abbot said. But i still have failed in my purpose for coming here. Is there nothing you can tell me, no piece of advice you can give me that would help me save my dying order . No. Im sorry, the rabbi responded. I have no advice to give. The only thing i can tell you is this the messiah is one of you. When the abbot returned to the monastery, well, what did the rabbi say . He couldnt help us, the abbot answered. We just wept and read the torah together. The only thing he did say was just as i was leaving it was something cryptic. It was this that the messiah is one of us. I dont know what he meant. In the days and weeks and months that followed, the old monks pondered this and wondered whether there was any possible significance to the rabbis words. The messiah is one of us . Could he possibly have meant one of us monks here at the monastery . If thats the case, which one . Do you suppose he meant the abbot that visited him . Yes, well, if he meant anyone, he probably meant father abbot. On the other hand, he might have meant brother thomas. Certainly, brother thomas. Hes a holy man. Everyone knows that thomas is a man of light. Certainly he couldnt have meant brother elred. Elred gets crotchety at times cranky. But come to think of it, even though hes a thorn in everybodys side, when you look back on it, elred is virtually always right. Often very right. Maybe the rabbi did mean brother elred. But surely not brother phillip. You see, phillip is so passive, a real nobody. But then, almost mysteriously, he has a gift for somehow always being there when you need him. He just magically appears by your side. Maybe phillip is the messiah. He couldnt possibly have meant me. Im just an ordinary person. Yet, suppose he did . Suppose i am the messiah. Oh, god, not me. [ laughter ] i couldnt be that much for you, could i, god . As they contemplated in this manner, the old monks began to treat each other with a whole new level of extraordinary respect just on the chance that one them might be the messiah. Because the forest which it was situated in was so beautiful, it happened that people still occasionally came to visit the monastery to picnic in its tiny lawn and to wander along some of its paths even now and then to go into the dilapidated chapel just to meditate a bit. But as they did so, without even being conscious of it, that now began to surround the five old monks. And it seemed to radiate out from them and permeate the atmosphere of the place. There was something strangely attractive, even compelling about it. Hardly knowing why, well, they began to come back to the monastery more frequently to picnic, to play, and even to pray. They began to bring their friends to show them this very special place. And their friends brought their friends. Then, it happened that some of the younger men who came to visit the monastery started to talk more and more with the old monks. After a while, one asked if he could join them. Then, another, and then another joined. So, within a few years, the monastery had once again become this thriving order and all thanks to the rabbis gift well, of course, the question is what was the rabbis gift . Well, unbeknownst to the monks, he gave them the gift of community, the possibility that each one of them could be representing god. It changed the way they treated each other, the way they looked at each other, and this respect and joy of that possibility spread so widely that it changed the entire atmosphere. Gifts come in many forms. But a gift is something thats willingly given without payment no strings attached. Its an expression of ones favor towards the receiver. The impact that the gift is going to have on the one who would receive it. Christmas is the celebration of the greatest gift. To put it in the words of the prophet isaiah, unto us, a child is born. But unto us, a son is given. Centuries later, the gospel of john affirmed these words for god so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whoever believed on him would not perish but have everlasting life. For god didnt send his son into the world to condemn the world but that through him the world just might be saved. The greatest joy that god could experience in giving this gift is watching the impact the gift of christ would have on those who receive him. No matter how far out of reach they seem to be, when they receive this gift, their lives would be changed forever. They would become part of a new community of love, life, and light. Merry christmas. [ applause ] what is a gift . Is it something you give when no else is around . What is a gift . Is it something you take from someone you feel you found . Wasnt it great, timothy . Its great. It sure gave me a lot to think about. So, timothy, let me ask you this if your christmas list had to include the entire world, what would be your idea of the perfect gift . Uh. Peace peace among us all. Theres so many problems in the world. You know what, id say, next to gods gift of salvation through christ, peace is a perfect gift. [ sighing ] yeah. Whats the matter now . Do you think well ever have peace . I mean, if people arent willing, then well, i know one thing for sure. And just as the wise men had enough faith to follow that star all the way to the manger in bethlehem, well, lets all have enough faith to know that one day all men are going to follow the example of our savior and love and peace.
