Which by the way this is 1960 to now, what is that . 45, 46 years . 46 years to the day that it was nixon versus kennedy in the first 46 years to the day. How interesting. Unlv is going to be home to the third and final debate of this president ial cycle. Thats happening next months. It is so exciting that we have this. Here with more is jacob thompson, the associate sanford debate forum. Good morning. Good morning. 6 00 oclock tonights from hofstra university. Lester holt is going to be moderating. Why are debates so important to this process . Well, its an important moment in americas democratic process. Its a condensation point in the campaign. Its the only chance that we have to see the two candidates standing side by side contesting one another and so its really a chance for the electorate to compare both candidates on important issues. Over the years, these debates have kind of morphed in importance, 46 years to the day, 1960 you had john f. Kennedy. You had richard nixon. People that heard over the radio thought nixon might have won by a hair. People that saw on television thought kennedy slam dunked it. Wow. Its more than just the words. Its really that the theatrics of it all. And image played a huge role in the 1960 debate. Ive read polls that indicate 6 of voters, 4 million american, made a decision who to vote for on solely watching the debate, which turned into 3 million votes for kennedy. That election was won by just over 112,000 votes. To me, its so interesting to know theyve been saying Hillary Clinton is preparing herself and that trump chose to be more out in public and kind of practicing his voice. You being a debater and being the coach of the debate team at unlv, what do you think about the prep . Well, i think that success in debate is like success in real estate. Location, location, location. I think its preparation, preparation, preparation. And i think that debaters that do their homework and more prepared are more likely to win. Well see. Well see. It starts tonight. Wraps up here at unlv which is yeah. How have you been preparing the students at unlv to take this on . Well, there have been a lot of on campus activities and things weve been doing. Im teaching classes, one called president ial debates. The students are really excited. I think all across campus about the opportunities that they have to volunteer, to work at on campus events and to participate in this kind of once in a lifetime process. So its a really big deal i think for students and faculty at unlv. Its great. You must feel the excitement in i mean, are the students debating . Are people passionate . Absolutely. I think there is a lot of passion over this election in particular, opinions are pretty polarized. But i also think that students are genuinely excited for the event itself and to participate in the kind of once in a lifetime educational opportunity. Really . The fact that unlv had this debate has really opened up a lot of these classes being off the record. So many classes related to president ial debates is because of the event itself. So tonight there is a special screening that is open not only to students, but also to the general public if anyone wants to come down and really feel a part of it. Correct . Yeah. So tonight the debate will start at 6 00 oclock if folks want toyshop up around 5 30. It will be held in the unlv Student Union ballroom. There will be free food, which is always you had burritos at the first rally . What . Oh, love it. I dont know if there will be burritos i cant make you promises. Ill take tacos. Well have a great debate give aways. Its going to be a really Exciting Events where people can come together and watch the debate and participate in the democratic conversation.
