(so it's the risk of having it be a bad case is 60% lower, or the risk of getting the flu is 60 lower? unclear) that's reassuring, since before every flu season health officials must predict which flu strains will be predominant? in order to advise vaccine makers. think of last flu season, where the vaccine was only 19 percent effective. with flu activity only now popping up in some parts of the country ? it will still be some time before this effectiveness can be confirmed. but that doesn't mean you have to wait to protect yourself and your family. if you haven't gotten your flu shot - now is the time. with this medical minute. i'm dr. timothy johnson. good morning las vegas.. still ahead this morning... this is a live look at the dolby theatre. hollywood's a-list celebrities will be hitting the red carpet hours from now for the oscars. but this morning, there's some questions over what's inside their gift bags. plus, unlv getting a much needed win at home! we'll have highlights from their victory it's one of the valley's most dangerous streches of highway. moves are being made to make else can be done? plus, taking center stage at the oscars---a controversy over what's included in this year's gift bag for the stars. but first-- a live look outside. it's setting up to be another beautiful day. 13 weather first meteorologist carlo falco is standing by with our forecast. good morning las vegas! i'm ... the time now is ... let's get started with a weather first check with carlo falco! good morning carlo. (nats) mike is cloud seeding. he does it by firing salt increase rainfall. ( mike anstis / pilot): "on the wings of the aircraft, we've got flares, which... when we fire the flares, it burns, and it emits a smoke." that smoke then attracts water vapor, creating bigger droplets. the flares are only effective if launched from inside certain thick clouds. ( jon jensen / reporter ) "if you don't like turbulence, well, this is definitely not the flight for you, because when you're cloud seeding, pilots like mike here, they don't avoid storms; they head right to the heart of them." the plane is tossed around in the wind -- side-to-side, up and down. ( jon jensen / reporter ) "oh wow, we're dropping." ( mike anstis / pilot ) "there is a calculated risk associated with this. we do have to know when it's ground, scientists at the country's meteorology centre track the flight. they started cloud seeding 15 years ago to help sustain a growing population in the u-a-e, one of the world's top consumers of water. last year, they flew more than 150 flights. each costs around five-thousand dollars, but they say it's cheaper and greener than operating desalination plants, u-a-e's main source of fresh water. ( abdullah al mandoos / executive director, national centre of meteorology and seismology ) "our material that we use... it's environmental. it's salt. very small, small amount that is not affecting the environment." ...and it may be working. back where mike first fired flares, a heavy downpour pounds the plane. ( jon jensen / reporter ) "did you just make this rain?" ( mike anstis / pilot ) "it's a natural rain, but we're trying to increase it." scientists are still studying how much water cloud seeding makes and the long- term effects on mother nature. ...but in a region where annual rainfall is just around three say this may be the best way to sustain life in the desert. jon jensen, cnn, somewhere over the u-a-e ahead today... some extreme climbers will lace up their tennis shoes to take on the tallest building in las vegas. it's for the "scale the strat" event. the climb is the largest fundraiser for the american lung association in southern nevada. steps to the top! last year's winner made the climb in 7 minutes 22-seconds. everything gets underway at 7 this morning with a kickoff party. the race starts at 8-am. when good morning las vegas returns... the junior league of las vegas is working to make easter a little easier for some local families. they'll join us in studio next, to explain.
