This morning abc news learned Consumer Product Safety Commission is issuing a warning about certain top loading samsung washing machines after consumers reported explosions. The c. Cpsc is working with samsung on a remedy and abcs gio benitez is here with details. Good morning, gio. Reporter the cpsc says it involved certain samsung washing machines made between march 2011 and april 2016. The agency tells abc news they are working with samsung on a remedy that will help ensure that there are no further incidents. Now take a look at this. Code red. Reporter its touted as a parents life saver. Kristen bell showing off one of samsungs top loading washing machines in a 2015 ad. At first, thats what Melissa Thaxton thought about the model but this april, she says everything changed right as she was standing next to the running washing machine. All of a sudden without warning, the washing machine just exploded. And it was the loudest sound. It sounded like a bomb went off in my ear. There were wires, nuts, the actual top was laying on the floor. Reporter even more frightening, melissa says her then 4yearold son, luke, was right next to her. I just remember covering my head and leaning over towards my son and just screaming this scre could scream. Reporter this melissa says is her samsung washing machine right after the incident. In North Carolina, sara price says her 2monthold top loading samsung washing machine flew apart too. Any one of us could have been in here and it just would have taken us out. Reporter its not just melissa and sara. Gma investigates learning 21 people since early last year have reported to the cpsc that their top loading samsung Melissa Thaxton and several others have sued samsung. Their lawyer, jason lichtman, argues this part, a support rod is insufficient to hold the tub in place and can become unfastened during the spin cycle. See right here, the rod can slide right out of this, and thats what causes the washing machine to blow apart. Reporter in a statement late tuesday, samsung told gma investigates, in rare cases affect the u about abnormal vibrations that could pose a risk of personal injury or Property Damage when washing bedding, bulky or waterresistant items. The statement continues, saying, it is important to note that samsung customers have completed hundreds of millions of loads without incident since 2011. If that would have hit my child, it would have been catastrophic. Thats why im speaking out. But like contentwise they dont know whats going on. No. They just sing away. Sing so happily. And youre like, oops. And youre horrified. Did you have any theme parties growing up . Oh, i love a theme party. Im still having theme parties. I wanted to ask you about that. [ applause ] i do. Didnt you post a picture recently. I do a hot mess party every year with my friends and, oh, well that was actually Nicole Richie did oh, thats another themed party. Oh, there we go again. Weve all heard about taking your kids to work, of course, well, there is a brandnew thing out now since millennials, i didnt know, are half the workforce, some parents to work day. Amazon you like that you do not like that idea at all. I love it. Wait a second. I am not taking my parents to work. Why are you so horrified by the idea of your parents coming to work . I dont know. My mom is just a little shes wild. Yeah, my mom is wild too. But you visited your mom on set recently. Thats different. Bring your daughter to set day. Whole other ball game. She walks in, its like a tornado. Look at these pics. Oh, momma, momma goldie. Yeah, well, you know, shes goldie hawn. Shes wild. Its like its like i remember when my mom would do hot lunch at school. And i was just like oh, no. You know, with the pizza and the thing, you know, singing things an well, you know, she like pirouettes everywhere and its the best. She is still pirouetting everywhere, but, you know, when youre a kid, you know, youre sort of your parents, when theyre wild, and i think ryder is like that with me too so, you know, i get it. I get being scared. This is the first movie deepwater horizon where you get to work with your pa, kurt russell. Again with the theme take that was sort of equal. What was that like . That was cool. You know, what i really, really loved about being on set with we didnt have many scenes together in the film. But what i loved about being on set with him was it was a reminder of me where i fell in love with making movies and watching him, you know, its a very different experience when youre watching a movie being made than watching the movie because its horribly boring. I mean its just being on set, oh, i love that picture. But its really boring. And but for me as a kid i loved it. Like i loved every aspect of it and i loved watching kurt because hes such a phenomenal actor, and hes yeah. [ applause ] and but he put so much care and effort into his roles and in a way that is different than i think of a lot of young people that ive worked with, you know, its just a different mentality. A total master class at home. Lets talk about you because as Mark Wahlberg said youre sort of the emotional heart of this film. Of deepwater horizon. Felicia in this film i play, i play marks wife Felicia Williams and she really the character represents all of the families on the deepwater, who were left in the dark for many hours not knowing what was going on with their families, not knowing not having any idea if they were going to come home and it was i literally get the chills every time i talk about it because i you got to be on set with these people and you get to talk about this experience that was incredibly traumatic. And you realize what felicia said, she said, one minute felt like an eternity and and she was on set with you. She was on set with us sometime, yeah, i got to talk to her a lot. Shes a wonderful, very strong woman. I love that scene. Yeah. Lets show people a bit of this. This is when your character, news. Just look. Natalie, this is Felicia Williams. Our husbands work on the deepwater horizon together, well, i just called the coast guard, and they can just confirm theres a fire. I was wondering if maybe you heard something. What did the coast guard say . Just that theres been a fire. Shelly heard people were jumping off the rig. Oh, gosh. I was telling i cant watch it. I know. I know. I cant watch it. Very h yeah. For people who are not familiar with the story, yes, it was this horrible, horrible environmental disaster and that, but the 11 people that were killed, they almost became a footnote to the story and this these families were so appreciative of you and mark and the whole cast for bringing their story and letting people know how it impacted them. Yeah, it was really wonderful to be in new orleans and have the premiere. We did a premiere in new orleans there, and you really felt it. You know, we felt it and we knew it when we were doing it. We just you have this sort of extra added thing in the back of your head going, you know, the families are going to see this movie, so you really want to be careful, and theres no carelessness going into making a film like that when you know the families are watching and then when you actually have the experience and you see that they just sort of have this moment to kind of pay its just it sort of feels like, you know, a sort of memoriam, i guess, to these people who really saved each other. There were some real heroes on that rig. Its surprising that more did not die because they were so there for each other. And when you watch the film youre thinking, oh, my gosh. I mean, its tragic that 11 lost their lives but so many more could have and marks character who he portrays i think yeah, he was the williams, but the thing i think that pete did thats really amazing about this movie because, you know, i read the script. I know the story, and then i watched the movie, and i was completely engaged, which is rare when youre making movies and i think pete did this amazing job of sort of you feel like youre in its full on, you know, youre in its just almost like you feel this anxiety like i think people will really get an experience watching this movie that just goes, wow, oh, my god, you know. Can we say this about you, you have always been a joy to watch. Always very talented, but you have blossomed. [ applause ] into this beautiful, beautiful soul of an actress. You know, i just as someone who is from elsewhere, im now a citizen, by the way. I just became a citizen. [ applause ] but i just felt that museum is such an incredible testament to some of the bad stuff that has gone on in this countrys history and we need to know what went wrong in order to get things right and thats what i feel that museum represents. Absolutely, 100 . I agree with you. [ applause ] and something that you did get right is this film. I mean its such a heartwarming film. It really is. But you learned how to play chess in this film from the master himself. I did. From the character you played. So, im curious when you learn to play chess from the guy who youre playing, who is a master, are you as good as he is now . No. I can be very clear about that. Who i play in the film at chess but hes incredible. And not only did he teach me how to play but he taught me how to teach it which is a pretty complicated thing. I got my board set up in my dressing room after the show. Give me a lesson. Are you throwing down right now . I need some help. You can beat me. I need some help. Thats what im saying. And the young lady, phiona, in this movie, is it true this is the first movie shes seen in her own life story . Well, i while we were doing the film we shot it in katwe, uganda where it is set and i took a bunch of the kids to see jurassic world, and madina sat next to me. Her talons clawing in my arm, aaagh. And then at one point she turred to me doing the movie and said, is that what we are doing . And i suddenly realize it was the first time she had ever seen a movie on the big screen halfway through shooting a movie for disney. And it was about her life. Yeah. Amazing. [ applause ] and you said this movie is life moviegoers africa in a different way than what theyre used to seeing. Yeah, you know, ive done some films set in africa and i think weve all seen films set in africa and it showcases the more negative side, child soldiers, genocide, dictators, disease and that can and sometimes is part of african life but this is also part of african life, people who are selfpossessed, who impact their own communities positive ly. A young girl from a slum in uganda who sells corn and then goes on to become a chess champion. A great job. Youre incredible. Congratulations on becoming a citizen. Thank you. Love it. Love it.
