"i did listen to it," said tami allison. "i have mixed feelings about it." it... being an apology from russell roberts jr. the apology the first words of regret the schmitt family has heard from roberts in two years and eight days. "it was nice to hear but i think it's just the beginning," said allison. but, it marked the end of his trial. roberts on wednesday, sentenced to 10-to-16 years in prison. in december, a jury found him guilty of the drunk driving crash that killed 28- year-old tiffany schmitt and hurt two others. "we came inches away of losing both my daughters and it definitely is something that needs to be taken seriously is drinking and driving," said allison. investigators say roberts flipped tiffany's truck on a rural road near homer. the force threw schmitt into a ditch. "our lives were changed forever," said allison. a district judge says roberts history of seven speeding sentence. best we could've hoped for and i'm very happy," said allison. "today we can finally put this to rest and remember the good times of tiffany and not remember the accident every time we walk into this building," said allison. pain the family endured for the past 738 days. in dakota county, sam curtiss, ktiv news four. >> roberts must serve at least five year in prison. the judge also revoked his license for 15 years. there is no word if he will appeal. the final four people involved in a meth conspiracy case in o'brien county have been sentenced in u.s. district court joe leal from hartley, mackenzie jellema from sioux city, isaac esquivel and valerie ortega, both from sanborn were sentenced in sioux city to at least three years behind bars. federal prosecutors say the four admitted to selling more than 50 grams of meth. ammon bundy and seven others arrested for their part in occupying a government building in oregon made their initial court appearances on wednesday. bundy and the others are currently charged with one count each of conspiracy to injure an officer. a detention hearing will be held for the defendants tomorrow to determine if they'll be released. after the court appearance, one of bundy's attorneys relayed a message from bundy to the supporters who remain at the wildlife refuge. bundy is asking them to stand down, go home and let those who have been arrested to continue the fight in the courts. authorities are looking for an inmate that walked away from the work release facility in sioux city. the department says 26-year-old jacob petty didn't return tuesday from an outpatient treatment program. petty has been in the october. he began serving a 10- year prison sentence for robbery in woodbury county back in 2008. police in norfolk, nebraska are still looking for an armed suspect. investigators say the hampton inn was robbed at gunpoint yesterday morning. the suspect then ran away. as a precaution, lockdown. " if we felt it was unsafe we would have kept the kids within our building. we would do whatever it takes to make sure they are safe."thompson says. south sioux city has a new police chief. lieutenant ed mahon will serve as the interim south sioux city police chief. mahon takes the place of chief scot ford who recently retired after 42 years on the force. 30 years ago today one of the great tragedies in american history took place as the space shuttle challenger exploded just 73-seconds after liftoff. all seven astronauts onboard were killed, including christa mcauliffe who was to be the first teacher in space. in honor of those men and women... and other nasa personnel who have lost their lives while furthering the cause of exploration and discovery... january 28th is the 'nasa day of remembrance.' this morning senior nasa officials will hold an observance and a wreath- laying at arlington national cemetery... other nasa centers will hold remembrance events later in the day. taco johns made a big donation to special olympics iowa. the check donation totaled more than 2- thousand dollars, with those funds coming from the this is the sixth year taco john's has partnered with special olympics iowa. taco john's staff say it's been a great partnership and they enjoy making the donation every year. "living in iowa we have just an amazing opportunity that other country, in fact across the world just don't have," said former chairman of the woodbury county democratic party, rick mullin. caucus-goers will be gathering at 13 different locations...10 of those being in sioux city on february 1st. " and something to keep in mind is your precinct because that determines where you'll be caucusing. for example if you're precinct 18 or 19 you'll be caucusing here at cavalry lutheran church." first... "you'll have a chance to sign the nominating papers for candidates who are running for office. you'll be able to pick up some literature and information about different campaigns. by 7pm we want everyone to be there and be signed in so we can start the caucus," said former chairman woodbury county democratic party, rick mullin. at that point announcement s will be made and democrats will group together depending on the candidate of their choice. if a group doesn't have enough people, they have to join another group... "and then the other person would be donald trump who has his own money. he doesn't listen. he doesn't take money from big corporations." but how are presidential candidates' platforms interpreted? we take a look into the affordable care act with a siouxland professor. "hillary clinton has said we shouldn't scrap obamacare even if there's problems with obamacare, we can work on solutions to fix those kind of things," "on the republican side what you see from trump, cruz and rubio is more of an approach that says again, let's scrap obamacare. but they're not calling obviously for replacing it with a single payer federal health care system." bernie sanders, who calls himself a "socialist" is calling for that single payer health care system to replace obamacare. but what does socialism mean? we asked some students what they think? "being social like even through media and stuff," said nelly ruiz, a briar cliff university junior. "like i know even on snapchat he has his own filter now so that's like kind of what i would assume that to be." "it's where you share land, everything's kind of government owned, but it's socially shared so that everybody gets an equal part of the pie," said nisha hull, a briar cliff university professor kyle irvin breaks down sanders' interpretation of socialism. "a populist kind of looks at things and says we're going to use government to kind of redistribute things in a more fair and equitable manner as he sees it," said irvin. "right, so if you're going to do that you're going to have a fairly strong governmental system to take in more money because the taxes are higher and redistribute that money." when tying sanders philosophy of socialism into education, he has proposed the idea of free college tuition. "if everybody's able to have access to college we'd have a more educated population which isn't a bad thing," said briar cliff university junior nicholas harris. "i just would be interested in seeing how he plans on funding that." irvin says with free college comes bigger bills in the future. "most people who have looked at that have said, you know taxes are going to have to go up," said irvin. "and i think bernie has said the way to raise those taxes would be primarily on the upper income folks in the country." when it comes to higher education, hillary clinton is proposing lower interest rates on college loans. "the proportion of your budget that has to go to student loans, if that's a large portion of your budget, based on kind of your initial salary, that's less you know goods and services that you the economy," said irvin. both parties have talked about making college more affordable. but multiple republican candidates take a different approach. "donald trump talks a lot about reducing regulations on business to free business up and create more jobs for students as they come out from college," said irvin. the differences in platforms leave people with many choices. in sioux city, tiffany lane, the head of the iowa national guard told lawmakers yesterday his soldiers are pouring more money into the state of iowa than they are taking out. major general timothy orr delivered the state of the national guard yesterday in des moines. he says the guard is stronger, better and more cost effective. "we came inches away of losing both my daughters and it definitely is something that needs to be taken seriously is drinking and driving," said allison. investigators say roberts flipped tiffany's truck on a rural road near homer. the force threw schmitt t to a ditch. "our lives were completely changed forever," said allison. a district judge says roberts history of seven speeding violations factored into the sentence. "i do believe that this is the best we could've hoped for and i'm very happy," said allison. "today we can finally put this to rest and remember the good times of tiffany and not remember the accident every time we walk into this building," said allison. pain the family endured for the past 738 days. in dakota county, sam curtiss, roberts must serve at least five year in prison. the judge also revoked his license for 15 years. there is no word if he will appeal. the final four people ininlved in a meth conspiracy case in o'brien county have been sentenced in u.s. district court joe leal from hartley, mackenzie jellema from sioux city, isaac esquivel and sanborn were sentenced in sioux city to at least three years behind bars. federal prosecutors say the four admitted to selling more than 50 grams of meth. ammon bubuy and seven others arrested for their part in occupying a government building in oregon made their initial court on wednesday. ndy and the others are currently charged with one count each of conspiracy to impede or injure an officer. a detention hearing will be held for the defendants tomorrow to determine if they'll be released. of bundy's attorneys relayed a message from bundy to the supporters who remain at the wildlife refuge. bundy is asking them to stand down, go home and let those who have been arrested to continue the fight in the courts. authorities are looking for an inmate that walked away from the work release facility in sioux city. the iowa department of corrections says 26-year- old jacob petty didn't return tuesday from an oututtient treatment program. petty has been in the work-release program since october. he began serving a 10- year prison sentence for robbery inwoodbury county back in 2008. police in norfolk, nebraska are still looking for an armed suspect. investigators say the hampton inn was robbed at gunpoint yesterday morning. the suspect then ran away. as a precaution, some area schools were placed on lockdown. " if we felt it was unsafe we wowod have kept the kidsdsithin our building. we would do whatever it takes to make sure they are safe."thompson says. so, far norrests have been made. south sioux city has an interim police chief. place of chief scot ford who recently retired after 42 years on the force. 30 years ago today one of the great tragedies in american history took place as the space shuttle challenger exploded just 73-seconds after liftoff. all seven astronauts onboard were killed, including christa mcauliffe who was to be the first teacher in space. in honor of those men and women... and other nasa personnel who have lost their lives while furthering the cauau of exploration and discoveve... january 28th is the 'nasa day of remembrance.' this morning senior nasa officials will hold an observance and a wreath- laying at arlington national cemetery... other nasa centers will hold remembrance events later in the day. special olympics of iowa received a shot in the arm to help its athletes. taco j jns presented the check for more than 27- hundred dollars. the restaurant raisethe money through the recent "holiday nachos navidad" campaign. this is the sixth year taco john's has partnered with special olympics. a great partnership and they enjoy making the donation every year. "livinin iowa we have just an amazing opportunity that other people across the country, in fact across the world just don't have," said former chairman of the woodbury county democratic party, rick mullin. caucus-goers will be gathering at 13 different locations...10 of those being in sioux city on february 1st. " and something to keep in mind is your precinct because that determines where you'll be caucusing. for example if you're precinct 18 or 19 you'll be caucusing here at cavalry lutheran church.h.first... "bernie sanders is one of them that people are looking at and saying hey, this is a guy that you know, isn't necessarily a puppet to the political system," said briar cliff university freshman stone conley. "and then the other person would be donald trump who has his own money. he doesn't listen. he doesn't take money from big corporations." but how are presidential candidates' platforms interpreted? we take a look into the affordable care act with a siouxland professor. "hillary clinton has said we shouldn't scrap obamacare even if there's problems with obamacare, we can work on solutions to fix those kind of things," "on the republican side what you see from trump, cruz and rubio is more of an approach that says again, let's scrap obamacace. but thth're not calling obvvusly for replacing it with a single payer federal health care system." bernie sanders, who calls himself a "socialist" is calling for that single payer health care system to replace obamacare. but what does socialism mean? we asked some students what they think? "b"bng social like even through and stuff," said nelly ruiz, a briar cliff university junior. "like i know even on snapchat he has his own filter now so that's like kind of what i would assume that to be." "it's where you share land, everything's kind of government owned, but it's socially shared so that everybody gets an equal part of the pie," said nisha hull, a briar cliff university senior. briar cliff university professor kyle irvin breaks down sanders' interpretation of socialism. "a populist kind of looks at things and says we'rrgoing to uss government to kind of redistribute things in a more fair and equitable manner as he sees it," said irvin. "right, so if you're going to do that you're going to have a fairly strong governmental system to take in more money because the taxes are higher and redistribute that money." when tying sanders philosophy of socialism into education, he has proposed the idea of free college t ttion. f everybody's able t thave accece to college we'd have a more educated population which isn't a bad thing," said briar cliff university junior nicholas harris. "i just would be interested in seeing how he plans on funding that." irvin says with free college comes bigger bills in the future. "most people who have looked at that have said, you know taxes are going to have to go up," said irvin. "and i think bernie has said the way to raise those taxes would be primarily on the per income folks in n e country." education, hillary clinton is proposinlower interest rates on college loans. "the proportion of your budget that has to go to student loans, if that's a large portion of your budget, based on kind of your initial salary, that's less you know goods and services that you can purchase in the economy," said irvin. both parties have talked about making college more affordable. but multiple republican candidates take a different approach. "donald trump talks a lot about reducing regulations on business to free business up and create more jobs for students as they come out from college," said irvin. the differences in platforms leave people with many choices. in sioux city, tiffany lane, the head of the iowa national guard told lawmakers yesterday his soldiers are pouring more money into the state of iowa than they are taking out. major general timothy orr delivered the state of the national guard yesterday in des moines. he says the guard is stronger, better and more cost effective.
